my KDE and gnome desktop don't work ,but root's works. Now when I log in I have just a black screen. From several days ago after liging in and working for hours I had just a black screen that waiting for it to appear normally diden't respond, and I finally had to reset system. What was its main job these days was running longtime fortran programs.I have CentOs 5.2 .
View 3 RepliesI am running CentOS 5.4, which I am occasionally managing via VNC from windows machine. This all occured after one long VNC session although I can't confirm this was the real reason. I also must say that I've seen some posts from people that had the same problem, but not anything helpful. Here is what happens:
Even if I start the machine from scratch I get the following error messages just before the login prompt and type of session window shows:
COULDN'T RECOGNIZE THE IMAGE FILE FORMAT FOR THE FILE '/USR/SHARE/GDM/THEMES/TREEFLOWER/BACKGROUND.PNG
THERE WAS AN ERROR LOADING THE THEME AND THE DEFAULT THEME COULD NOT BE LOADED. ATEMPTING TO START THE STANDARD GREETER.
If I choose GNOME and login I get more errors (for every icon I guess) saying:
COULD NOT LOAD ICON. UNRECOGNIZED FILE FORMAT.
Desktop then loads but there is no background image (other backgrounds don't work either) and the icons are question marks. All the menus and programs work normally.
KDE on the other hand works normally with all visuals, so I assume there must be something wrong with GDE PNG library or something, maybe GDE corruption. If I make another user it's the same story.
serious problem here: am running centos 5.4 gnome (updated to the latest updates automatically offered). worked fine till yesterday. now on startup logged in as my normal user, the desktop is empty...!! i get a desktop background, an the bottom and top bars (top with �pplications places, system'an some icons and day and time) no folders/items !! (there were many in it).
opening a terminal and looking in the home directory of the logged in user, the Desktop directory is present, and contents files/folders, so nothing has vanished really.. how do i get back my desktop?? (btw: logged in as root gives an empty desktop too, same as above)

I upgraded to 5.3 and on the next login I was placed in a basic xwindows desktop. Running /etc/init.d/gdm give me the response "GDM already running. Aborting!" Not sure where to look next.

On my home test 5.5 VM, after converting to ext4, moving items to the trashcan in Gnome results in nothing showing in the desktop Trashcan. Looks like a bug in gnome-vfs' support (or lack of it) for ext4, or have I got some other more subtle corruption going on? It's of little importance to me as I'm rarely in the GUI, but it would be nice to see confirmation or otherwise.

When i logged into a gnome desktop i got this message: "The GNOME session manager was unable to read file:'/home/(desktop name)/ICEauthority'. If this file exists it must be readable by you for GNOME to work properly. try logging in with failsafe session and removing the file." View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm running Fedora 15 with Gnome 3. I installed Gnome-Do using 'yum install gnome-do'. I opened it from the Terminal by typing 'gnome-do' but I keep getting an error message that says
Could not load desktop item: libgnome-desktop-2.so.17
Gnome-Do opens but it doesn't display any application I search for and when I try opening the Gnome-Do preferences, it quits.
I installed gnome-desktop-2.32.0-8.fc16.i686.rpm from here: [url] and then installed Gnome-Do. Everything works fine now.
I have my Unity desktop just how I like it, but sometimes I like to log in to the Gnome (Ubuntu Classic) desktop. However, I was playing around with CCSM while in Gnome and I've totally messed it up, I have the Gnome panels and also the Unity launcher, it's a total mess. Is there a way to reset my Gnome desktop to default without affecting my Unity desktop?

View 1 Replies View Relatedis it would be possible create a Ubuntu dvd that contains the ubuntu server desktop and alternate install opptions, as well as all four main desktop environments (gnome, kde, xfce, lxde) and unity. since much of the data is redundant between each version cd's it would probably all fit on one disk. then all that would be needed is two disks one for 32 bit and another for 64 bit. i really think that this could work.

Among them were: fontconfig, pango, gtk+, cairo, glib. goffice, pixman, tiff, and atk. Afterwards, I got missing fonts with some apps, but the biggest problem is interference with my Vmware Workstation GUIs. Yesterday I removed all the libraries I installed hoping to recover. Now things are better, but when I open a terminal on the desktop it opens jammed in the upper-left corner with the top grab bar out of reach of the mouse. Before I remove the ~/.gnome* directories, how to restore things?

When I look for gnome-desktop3-3.0.1-2.fc15.x86_64 it is not on any installation menu list. I prefer gnome, but installed KDE and that worked. Any ideas of getting gnome to work?

Esp. for the computers which are dual booting(both windows xp and centos installed in the same computer), that when we are in CentOS we need to switch onto windows immediately. and vice versa. i see this is possible only by shutting down the centos/windows and then restarting onto the other OS.

I am trying to set up an unused machine as a web server for my students.
I originaly tried with Redhat 9 and had the same problems. I am using an HP Pentium 4 system with 2 network cards.
1) The built in Realtek RTL8139 configured as eth0.
2) An add in Broadcom BCM5782 Gigabit card that was added I presume when the built in card failed (we have a number of machines like this around the school), configured as eth1.
I did not realize the second card was installed when I had Red hat 9 on the system, but I discovered it after installing centos 5.5. I have tried to configure the system to use DHCP with and without getting the DNS from the provider, and both ways the system complains that there is no connection, check the cable, so it will not activate the device.
When I configure the device to use a fixed IP, I can configure the device, but I can't ping anything on the network other than myself. I suppose it is possible that both network cards have failed, but I get green link lights with both cards, when I connect them to my router, so I am at a loss as to why neither board seems to work. I don't have a spare network card to slide in because the computer takes a special mini card. Is there an easy way to test the board to see if the board is a problem?
I am trying to install CentOS 5.2 on an HP rp5700 desktop unit. These units were originally sold as a Point of Sales unit I believe, but HP also markets it as a high life cycle server for SMB market.I tried to load CentOS on this unit via CD (created from downloaded ISO of course). It presents the initial CentOS banner page and waits for the obligatory "enter" to continue. It begins the boot process up to discovering the PCI stuff and just locks up, no response. I have to power down to restart.Since this does not even get to the point of installing. I am at a loss what to do next. View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Centos 5.2 VM running under Windows 2008 Hyper-V. If I add two "legacy Nic's" and bridge them, everything appears to work fine. However, if I remove the legacy nics and replace them with two synthetic nics (linux integration components), the nics seems to function fine UNTIL I add them to a bridge.This VM will eventually be used as a DansGuardian/Squid transparent proxy for a local library. The logical layout is represented by the attached jpg image. I have also included the ifcfg- scripts for the adapters and bridge for both scenarios.It would also be useful if someone else has Hyper-V with the integration components and dual physical nics to see if they can reproduce my symptoms on their box.Legacy Adapters:
