No error when I'm not root. So it's only when I become root and run gedit in terminal I get errors, why?
I developed a java application to organize the articles and notes for what I need for my work reports. The path appear in a jlist component and by clicking on I'd like the file opened. The application works fine in /home side.

yesterday i tried to install bt4 from alongside ubuntu 10.04. Unfortunately the DVD had some errors and the installation stopped. Everything was fine till then, even the GRUB was working(i guess!) but when i tried to log into my Ubuntu it gave me an error... This happens in 2 pcs, and errors seem to be the same,One has 11.4 + gnome 2, standar installation (with gnome) from 11.4 DVD. The error i get whenever i run something like zypper install xxxyyy.rpm or zypper update is:

I dont know if its related, but the one with gnome 3 constantly gives me (what i think is) a kernel panic when i shut down the system, it happens fast and the text on the screen is not "linear" but spread all over the screen, so i cant read the whole message, but it does say something about glib and corruption.This is actually the first time(s) ibe seen a kernel panic ever since i used ubuntu.

I'm using a dark theme (Obsidian Coast) which is making things a pain to read using the default LaTeX syntax highlighting and color schema of Kate. I can edit the schema just fine, but that does not affect the colors of certain highlighting features, such as the color of expressions which fill in the ellipses of "section{...}", which turn out black or "egin{...}" which turn out dark blue.
Is there any way to fine-tune the highlighting features of a particular kind of markup (LaTeX in my case)?
I'm trying to install ubuntu 10.10 on xp,but, after waiting around 2 hours per instalation I received a error message that says:" unbuntu installer : and error occurred: coercing to unicode: need string or buffer, none Type found. for more information see log file C:1customerlocals-1 empwubi-10.10-rev197.109. I tried on one particion make just for it then I even tried on xp on C: I even put it on a pendrive but my bios is old and do not provide for usb booting. The other thing I have to try is making a boot cd but for one reason or the other , my recorder do not want to recornized my cds- rw and right now I do not have any regular blank cds . That will be my next step. Note: Ubuntu appears installed on the the control panel "add or removed programs" but not in "all programs" list. I'm a novice on this so maybe the answer was posted but I couldn't find it. Looking ahead to try it and be part of the linux team.

We've been using a system that lets us define which particular drives to use during the installation as part of our deployment system. This does not work now that LVM is the 'default' in CentOS. View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to prevent the dm_mod and friends from loading during install.I am installing by PXE boot with NFS and kickstart files over http. This works fine for other machines.Ok, I have a Dell PowerEdge 2900 III with 8gig ram, PERC 6/i raid controller.The raid has 8 1TB drives in it, so the total size of the device is >2TB.There is also an SATA drive, which is NOT on the raid controller.
The problem is, I want to install CentOS on the SATA drive. The SATA drive comes up as a device-mapper drive, with a big crazy device name.This is ok, but the problem is, when the system goes to boot, it just says 'missing operating system'.I can't boot from the raid because it is large enough to require a GPT partition, and CentOS says it can't boot from a GPT partition.The SATA drive would work FINE if I could just prevent the damn device mapper from loading, so that I could install on the SATA drive in ordinary SATA mode.
I have tried re-squashing the stage2.img with /etc/modprobe.conf with alias dm_mod off and such, no luck.I also tried adding an /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist file, that did not work either.I also tried putting blacklist= dm_mod in the kickstart file, but that seems to be a fedora-only option and it kills my install. any ideas on preventing the dm_mod et. al. from loading at install time??

I tried to install a pci wireless card, just to see if it was faster than my usb antenna. after trying to install the kernel, or firmware or driver, not sure which. i fallowed the instructions on the site that Terminal posted to me. Well... it didn't work. kept getting error msg's. now every time I install updates, new programs, or even uninstall something. weather it be in Terminal, synaptic, Ubuntu software centre, I keep getting firmware-b43-installer error. I'm not using the card, cause I couldn't get it to work. but how do I get rid of the error code that keeps coming up, even though I'm not trying to install it. This is what popped up in Terminal after installing Minitube.

Booting with the default label from the 64-bit installation DVD crashes before any user input, with indecipherable text on-screen (text mode, not X11). Symptoms were the same with the Fedora 11 32-bit installation DVD and the Fedora 12 Live 32-bit CD. Booting with "linux text" mode shows a kernel panic in ":r8169:rtl8169_init_one+0x369/0x9d4" from "pci_device_probe+0x100/0x180".
Disabling the on-board NIC allowed the boot to proceed, and get as far as detecting the hard drive partitions (where I stopped it since Ubuntu is installed).
Ubuntu 9.04 Workstation(Desktop?) install DVD worked fine, and I've installed it and am using it to enter this. From Ubuntu 9.04 on this hardware:
- "uname -r" shows

I tried to install 11.3 today but no luck so far. I installed it 3 times from GNOME liveCD and once from a LiveUSB both didn't work. With the CD, it restarts before installing initrd, GRUB tells me :
error 15 : file not found.
I verified both the image I downloaded via md5 and the CD I made and they both are OK.
I have an ASUS N82 model notebook with Windows 7 and an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670 GPU. I downloaded the openSUSE-11.4-DVD-x86_64.iso file and tried to run it from my desktop using Daemon Tools LITE software. The install program for the installer started up and let me progress all the way to the final screen at which point it starts extracting files and then I almost immediately get this error message: "Cannot exec bcdedit.exe"
I have done everything I know to do to make sure that I am signed in and running the install as an administrator. I even ran the command prompt as an administrator to make sure that I could run bcdedit.exe myself and it ran fine.
I am having trouble installing the 10.04 RC On my desktop the installer just crashes with a fatal error, before you get to the first screen of the installation process, where you choose to run as live cd or install. On my Laptop i am trying to Install alongside my current 9.10 installation and i keep getting the errors illustrated in the screenies. It is all probably down to my stupidity, but if it is not then this is very worrying 1less than a week before release.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm a first time user of xubuntu or any other linux derivative operating system and I was wondering if I could get some assistance on installing xubuntu 11.04 on my old laptop. When I downloaded the iso and burned it into a DVD+R, I inserted it into the machine and let it ran. It started well and I checked the disc's integrity before continuing with the installation and it passed that. Now, as I enter the installation screen, I select my language then click forward but the installer freezes for a few minutes and later disappears only to be replaced with an error message, "The installer encountered an unrecoverable error. A desktop session will now run so that you may investigate the problem or try installing again." and it does as it says and boots into a demo mode. I try installing again through the "Install Xubuntu.." link on the desktop but it follows the same problem.
My laptop's specifications are as follows:
ACER TRAVELMATE 290
256 RAM (240 usable)
Intel Pentium M processor 1500 MHz 599 MHz
Video card: 64 MB internal Intel 82852/82855 GM/GME Graphics Controller

Next week we will get a new Server for rent with a preinstalled Debian. If we download the Networkinstaller and put it in Grub, it is possible to set some settings with a script or commandline? We need SSH and the Network haves to run. So we have to set up the Networkadress , Gateway and Netmasq. So if the Networkinstaller is booting that we get direcly access with SSH to install CentOS. It is possible?
