Mar 21, 2010A couple of weeks ago, I completed a system upgrade that was motivated because I have to deploy Windows 7. I have to deploy it because my Windows development environment is getting very long in the tooth, and I have to become current again for a project of mine that is underway. So, yesterday, I deployed Windows 7 Professional in VMware 7 hosted on Mandriva 2010. With my new upgrade, I have a very capable quad-core athlon system with an NVidia 240GT video card, and it runs Aero quite nicely in the virtual machine. I do have to say that Windows 7 looks nice and isn't too annoying to use, except - of course - when I need to dig into it to change some setting or another.
Now, on Windows, for many years I have used Zone Alarm firewall rather than the Windows firewall, because ZA monitors and controls outgoing connections. I have used this on both my Win2K development system (virtual machine) AND my Win XP laptop to keep microsoft applications (notably media player) from calling the mother ship when I didn't think they should. It has worked well. So one of my first actions was to download the newest copy of ZA free firewall and deploy it on Windows 7, after disabling the Windows firewall. Well guess what. ZA doesn't stop Windows from calling the mother ship. I have all settings on ZA set to "ask" before allowing anything to contact the net, but I've been playing with some multimedia things and the microsoft software has been talking on the internet as happy as you please, and ZA hasn't asked me a single time if it could do so.
Of course, when I ran a few tests with ping and tracert, ZA asked me. Also, I had to fiddle with ZA settings a bit to get the Windows 7 to successfully talk to my LAN. But when Windows 7 wants to talk to microsoft, it talks regardless of what ZA says. Well, when you get down to it, this is one reason I have Windows running in a VM...I WILL be in control, regardless of what microsoft wants. Does anyone know of a tool that I could use from Mandriva to prevent a VMware client from talking to a website? I'd like to be able to easily enable/disable it so that I can let Win 7 talk to microsoft when I need for it to do so, but no other time. I'm using bridged networking in VMware so all my virtual machines have their own IP addresses, but of course all of them (as well as my host Linux system) go through the same network adapter. It seems to me that iptables would have to work for this, but I'm not at all sure how to set it up to do it given the bridge.

May 17, 2010Can't find any step by step info about moving web site from one server to another. I have to move website from open BSD to CentOS. Maybe somebody can help me with this. All I did is : copied www directory to new server, installed apache, installed php, installed mysql, copied mysql datadase to new server.But website still not loading.

CentOS 5 :: Cannot Get 1M IO With Block Devices?
Nov 19, 2009I am trying to do 1Meg IO to one of the block devices but I can only get a maximum of 512K IO size. I can use the corresponding sg device to get 1Meg of IO. I was wondering if anyone knows why 1Meg IO to a block device is being broken down into 2 512K chunks? I have increased the /sys/block/sdg/queue/max_sectors_kb to 16384, but it has made no difference.
My uname is : Linux virgo 2.6.18-128.el5 #1 SMP Wed Jan 21 10:41:14 EST 2009 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Jul 29, 2010Im running drupal on my webserver and, this morning all of the sudden I went to edit a node and now I cant load the website in my browser at all. I can ping the machine and SSH into it fine, but it will not load the website in chrome or IE, I have no idea whats going on here.
Edit: I did a 'service httpd restart', it took 3mins to restart, is this normal? After I did that it loaded once, not even all of the page, now its doing the same thing again.
Edit2: Now it seems to be working fine again...
CentOS 5 Server :: Cant Access Website - Cannot See From Any Other Machine On Net
Nov 19, 2010I have set up a 5.5 installation on a Virtual box VM. The Virtualbox (not for the VM) network preferences have DHCP Server disabled and IPV address and the network mask I believe are valid for my home network. My VM is up and running and it has gotten an IP address from my home router and everything seems fine. From any machine in my house I can ssh into my centos installation. I went ahead and started up the httpd service and the website is up. IOW, I can see it from my centos box - when I navigate to http://localhost However, I cannot see it from any other machine on the net. The IP address of the centos bos is 192.168.0.141. From the centos I can do a ttp://192.168.0.141 and see the Apache 2 test Page. I can see that from anywhere else. Although I can ssh to that machine.

Nov 11, 2010I have 4 centos5 apache webservers all on the same network, recently, 2 of the webservers have stopped being able to ping or browse one particular website where feeds are obtained from this site. I have checked and firewall and selinux settings are disabled. The two webservers are able to ping and browse other sites. Dns settings are the same for all 4 servers. traceroute for working and not working webservers are the same.

Is there a way that I can block the system from installing a package? Maybe I could just tell people to do --skip-broken with all their upgrade commands, because I disabled that package somehow? Anyone know how to do this?

May 5, 2011I have the requirement that if our website receives 20 or more requests within 60 seconds, to block the offending IP address for 5 minutes, then allow them access again. My only certain mechanism to do this is iptables. I wrote the following series of commands:

iptables -N DOSAttack
iptables -N RemoveBlock

I am limited in my testing, but the little I have been able to test seems to be having no effect. will the above commands have the desired effect.

Feb 4, 2010I was having a problem on my squid server whereby 1 website would timeout daily and return a nscd not found error: [url]....There may be other sites but this is the only one I know of. A selection of other sites still work correctly, which is the strange thing.I have found that by restarting the dns cache everything works again: /etc/init.d/nscd restart.I never know quite when this will timeout so it is not very good for people accessing that site on the server.

Sep 4, 2009I just downloaded an iso of the latest CentOS dist (5.3) and burned it to disk. I booted from the CD and received the following error:

The failed "read 10" packet command was:

(This error message repeats for another 9 or 10 times then it says the following)

(Then there are some unmounts which are old /dev, /proc, /sys. At this point a series of steps begin).

These are just some of the steps that appear after the above error is displayed, all of the steps that load have an ok status. After those are completed I get to a text prompt - localhost login: At this point my keyboard does not seem to respond, pressing enter or any of the other keys seems to have no effect. I noticed that during the load process I could toggle the light for caps and num lock, but at the login screen it does'nt work. So at this point I'm not sure if I'm having a technical issue or if its just another case of an user error.
