I'm currently booting Linux Mint off a live USB, and its really great. The only problem i'm having is that i'm trying to get this one program, called Monica, it adjusts the gamma values, etc for your monitor, which i need because my monitor is kinda messed up :P. But yeah, the site that hosts it is down, and I cant find a single working mirror. If anyone has the package for it, would it be possible to upload it?

I'm in a student organization and we use a file server that runs linux. I can log in through ssh and copy using scp using login and password (no rsa/dsa keys because most users are windows users using winSCP and they're lacking in computer knowledge so we don't require them to mess around with keys)
However, I don't have network access everywhere, so I'd like to make a copy on my laptop harddisk of some of the folders I use most frequently. Note that I don't need it to copy files from my pc back to the remote server so I don't need two-way sync. Deleting the local copy every time and downloading a new full copy is not an option as we are talking about several gigabytes and the download speed is limited. Normally I would use Unison, however, this requires unison to be installed on both pc's and I can't install any software on the file server so this is not an option.
Any ideas on how to achieve this? I'm reasonable knowledgable about linux so I don't mind tinkering with some config files and using command line applications.

A friend recently introduced me to linux and I've experimented with a few different distros and now have 2 working puppies; 1 system i slapped together from misc. parts lying around and the other is my netbook which boots to puppy via USB. I have had to play around with formatting using gparted.
I very recently acquired a server unit with a pentium II 200Mhz and I would like to LEARN linux. Thru careful research I have figured out that Slack is the best OS for those who want to learn the in's and out's. I guess my question would be which slackware distro would be best for this somewhat older system? ...And where can I find a mirror to download the iso?
My requirement is to install Ubuntu SERVER 8.04.3 LTS on a Dell 2550 machine.
Problem.
- Bug in ubuntu (desktop and server) stopping CD install on this hardware platform. It hangs half way through and is something to do with the SCSI CD drive. Lots of stuff on the net about it, but no fix as far as I can see, at least nothing that works for me.
- So, tried boot off CD and then used F6 and added a cdrom-detect/try-usb=true line together with putting a USB with the ISO burnt onto it in the USB port. Still hangs during install (can't see USB perhaps? USB not correctly burnt? Tried many many times though, and eventually gave up at 2am)
- Next tried PXE boot. Now getting somewhere. Ok I installed tftpd32 on my windows machine, and copied the netboot files from the ubuntu site to the tftpd directory. (I dont think this will help me install the server, just the desktop??) Anyway, it booted from the win tftp machine (wahey!), and went through install, BUT when it tried to find the mirror site it couldnt. In fact it couldnt find ANY mirror site. (Internet access from windows and all other PCs on the network is working fine).
So, to ensure I am installing the SERVER version, and to use PXE boot, and to NOT use the internet to download the files (i.e. load them up locally somewhere), what do I do?
I have searched all over. I cannot find any info on the description of the Fedora mirror release directory structure and the reason for having a "Fedora" and "Everything" directory? My requirement is to route ssh sessions from a single head node to multiple slave nodes. So what i want is, for a client there is just one point of entry (master/head node) to ssh into, it evaluates the load on the slave nodes connected on to internal network and routes the ssh session, kind of a ssh load balancer. what open source solution i can apply for my problem?

I have set proxy for yum so that the packages that are not available on local mirror can be downloaded from other mirrors. But then i don't know how to set no proxy for my local server. Consequently it is not using my local mirror at all. Tell me how to set no proxy for the local mirror. I want my local mirror because it's damn fast. I seem to be seeing some weird behavior in kubuntu with KDE 4.3.2 and KDE 4.3.5 for Kubuntu 9.10 32-bit.I have a few programs in my home folder. For instance Eclipse and Mendeley. it seems that when i create a Link to Application does not launch them. Here is how I create the links.
-> I right click and create a new "Link to Application"
-> I click on the Application tab and browse to where the shell script, or executable is.
and when I try to launch them it does not work. The link is using the absolute path. I tried setting the working directory and using a relative path but nothing. If I run the link in a terminal it says "Warning: Could not find" and the application I set. Now this seems to not be a problem for system applications like Kate. If i change the link to launch Kate it works perfectly.
find file-roller (aka 'Archive Manager') in xubuntu's Applications menu. I surely have it; it is the default application for opening archives, I can invoke it from the terminal but I can't just... run it from the Applications drop-down.I even tried the Application Finder with no luck using the keywords file-roller, archive, file, roller, .zip. .tar, etc. No luck.Can anyone else find it on their Applications dropdown menu? Or at least tell me that they can't find it either?I'm curious if I have some configuration glitch, or if this is a bug, or maybe there's just something in the water here.

It dose not run in Linux Redhat v5 . #uname -a Linux2.6.18-194.el5 #1 SMP i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux The java install is the latest as is jrel and test good. firefox is vs 3.0.19

The error is "switchExplorer_installed.html which is a: JNLP file from: http://10.67.0.189 What should firefox do with this file? options are open or save. I tried both. When I select open I get a line onthe browse window "6.2.0 Web tools 10.67.0.189.
i am trying to set some custom keyboard shortcuts using compiz in the commands section...but it is not working. For example , i want to use kaffeine and i am using as command the word kaffeine. When i use it in the custom commpand of compiz it is not working at all. Just to be sure that the command is indeed "kaffeine" i execute it via terminal using the word "kaffeine" and it is executed normaly. I am 100% sure that the command is only for terminal use and as general launcher. The same behavior is observed for other applications. The strange thing is that when i want to put a custom keyboard shortcut in compiz for a python script then the command "python xxx.py" is working!

But when I maximize any application(be it chrome, firefox, vlc, media player), the whole screen becomes white and when I escape from it to make it of small window, it again runs normally. For this, I have to make an application which communicates with the device drivers provided by the ARM linux(which comes with the OMAP L-138 *) so that we can transfer the data stored in the device to a computer.
My question: Suppose I make such an application which makes the host Linux computer detect my device connected at its USB port and then transfer the stored data to the computer. Will windows computers be able to detect my device? What should I do so that my device can transfer data to both Linux and Windows pc?
I'm trying to get VNC working on Damn Small Linux. I installed the package, and I can get the viewer to work. However what I want to do is get the server working so that I can remote connect to users. When I do connect instead of the active session all I get is a grey screen with an xterm window. I've done a lot of searching for this, but cannot seem to find a good answer. What I'd like to do is connect to the native X session. I've tried changing things in the xstartup file to things such as "-display :0" but it still doesn't work.
View 13 Replies View RelatedOnly "Favourites", "Run Command" and "Leave" is shown on the classic KDE menu, same thing when switching to Launcher Menu Style. Missing Applications and everything else. File associations is not working. Double clicking any type of file it asks to install the program and the known applications menu is empty.
I tried to add a new user, same problem with that. I also noticed that when running Chrome it asks to be the default web browser each time even when I say yes.
I have not been messing with anything, I suspect it happened during a update, but I got the exact same repositories on 2 other x64 machines where there is no problem.
I'm using KDE 4.6.0 from the factory repository.
I tried to reinstall some KDE4 packages without any luck.
I do not want to reinstall the entire system or downgrade KDE.
