May 18, 2010

Was wondering if it's possible to set up a single disk with btrfs and then later on convert it to a 'mirrored' array?

Hardware :: Failed Hardware Mirror Disk- Convert One Drive To Non-mirrored?

Aug 30, 2010

I own an Iomega NAS enclosure. It is basically a card with 2 sata drives attached and a network card that runs an small web interface. To make a long story short. The controller card has went bad. One drive dropped out of the mirrored set.... and then came back in and attempted to rebuild. Several hours later the drive dropped out again. I attempted to replace the drive and the controller would not rebuild at all.

To summarize. I have accepted that the controller card is toast and want to proceed assuming one drive is compromised and the other still has salvageable data (About 18 GB needs recovered) I took the presumed "good" drive.. attached it to a standalone enclousre that takes it from sata to USB.When I look under disk manager (using Ubuntu 10) I see the following appear

1) the multi Disk device appears indicating it is part of a logical drive. Indented from that is

2) The "Array" Icon

3) The USB icon indicating a "peripheral device" Indented from that is

4) the Drive as a 500 GB hard disk (correct)

when i click on 4) I see 2 volumes 1 1GB volume with partition type Linux (0x83) and a 499 GB partition with the same type (0x83) However..because it thinks it is part of an array it is not mounting. HOW do I tell this drive "you are not in an mirrored array anymore...mount as a single drive"

But yeah, the site that hosts it is down, and I cant find a single working mirror. If anyone has the package for it, would it be possible to upload it?

Assume RHEL5 hda(Disk1) & hdb(Disk2) currently in mirror, i have to install some patches in it. Before that i have to break the mirror and boot from hdb if it is successful. then i have to apply the patches to hda.

After that i have to boot from hda and check whether the latest patches updated and working fine. finally i have put them in mirror. the same scenario for solaris.

Ubuntu Installation :: Migrate Working Single Disk System To Existing RAID Array Using Disk UUIDs

Aug 1, 2010

I had done a new lucid install to a 1 TB RAID 1 array using the alternate CD a few weeks back. I messed up that system trying to some hardware working that lucid doesn't have drivers for yet, so I gave up on it and reinstalled to a single 80 GB disk that I now want to move over to the RAID array.

I moved all of the existing files on the array to a single folder, then copied all of the folders from the 80 GB disk over to the array with permissions and symlinks (minus the contents of /proc and /sys, which I created empty).

These are the commands I used:

Quote:

p -a -d -R -v -t /media/raid_array /b*
cp -a -d -R -v -t /media/raid_array /d*
cp -a -d -R -v -t /media/raid_array /e*
cp -a -d -R -v -t /media/raid_array /h*

[Code]....

I tried to change fstab to use the 689a... for root, but when I try to boot, it's still trying to open /dev/disk/by-uuid/412d...

So then I booted from the single disk again and chrooted into the array, then ran update-initramfs -u. I got 3 "grep: /proc/modules: No such file or directory" errors, and "cat: /proc/cmdline: No such file or directory"- so I created directory /proc/modules, created an empty file /proc/cmdline, and ran the initramfs update again. Then I tried to shut down, which hung (probably because I was doing all of this from a terminal window in Gnome), so I killed the power after a couple of minutes.

It's still trying to use /dev/disk/by-uuid/412d... to boot.

What am I missing? I assume I just have to change the UUID to mount as root, but I don't know how.

Hardware :: Fedora 11 RAID 1 - Disk Failure - Boot From The Single Working Disk?

Oct 16, 2009

my Fedora 11 system is not starting anylonger. It stops with the message:

Code:

VFS: Can't find ext4 filesystem on dev dm-0

The system told me since a while, that a lot of the sectors of one disk of the (software) RAID compound are failed already. So tried to disconnect each of the disks and start them separately. Unfortunaltly this is not working (for one its is not working at all, the other wents the same far as with both), when I tried to recover the system with the Fedora DVD, it said no distribution found. I am quite new and do not know so much about linux system, so i do not know what further information you could need. Maybe it can be important, that both disks are encryped (the system wents so far, that I can type in the password).

CentOS 5 :: How To Mirror Root Disk

Apr 27, 2011

I've got a new server built, shaken down and patched (2.6.18-194.el5). Works nicely.

I don't want to rebuild it from scratch if the root drive goes belly up, but I do NOT have a hardware raid controller.

The root disk should be pretty static at this point... any suggestions how I might back it up?

I was thinking I could put in another disk (same size or bigger) and use cron to run something like this nightly: dd if=/dev/sda1 of=/dev/sda2

Ubuntu Servers :: Ext USB Disk As Tertiary Offsite Mirror?

Jul 28, 2011

Looking for a few pointers here.I am trying to automate the adding and removal of two external usb disks to my linux raid mirror (md) that I use for an offsite copy of my data. This is what I currently do.Server has 2 x 500 gb internal disks setup with linux raid 1. (md)I connect 1 of the external usb disks, add it as a secondary mirror to the main array. After it rebuilds, I remove it from the array and take it home.I have two of these external drives so one of them is always offsite, and the other is either being rebuilt, or connected as a secondary mirror. At the moment, this involves running commands manually. I cannot seem to figure out how to automatically add these disks from and to the array with a script. It seems that every time it rebuilds on the external disk, it gives it a new UUID.

Slackware :: Dual Boot With Lilo On Btrfs - Slackware 13.1?

May 29, 2010

I just did a fresh install of slack 13.1 on a separate drive to the one I was previously using. I've been having trouble getting lilo to work, so that I can choose between either drive. Lilo is currently installed to /dev/sda, with the old system on /dev/sda1 and the new installation on /dev/sdb1. I keep getting errors like these:

Code: Fatal: Trying to map files from unnamed device 0x0011 (NFS/RAID mirror down ?)
I managed to install lilo from the old system by copying the kernel image from the new system into the /boot/ directory and running lilo. I am now on the new system and trying the same thing in reverse but it isn't working. I have searched around a bit and there's a lot of talk of chroot-ing into the other partition to run lilo. I don't understand why the process isn't working both ways though. I can't run lilo on my new installation even with the two kernel images in the local /boot/ folder. Is this something to do with btrfs or am I missing something to do with lilo? This is my lilo.conf file. I am trying to run lilo using this file from my new installation on /dev/sdb1 and getting the error given above.

General :: Use Ghostscript To Convert Multi-page PDF Into Single JPG?

I know Ghostscript can convert PDFs to JPGs, and in the case of a multi-page PDF, can rip each page to an individual JPG. But is it possible to have it rip them to one JPG, so that the pages are pasted below each other, e.g. the top half of the JPG is page 1, the bottom half is page 2? Or do I have to use another program (and can ImageMagick do this?) to combine the JPG pages into one image?

Ubuntu Installation :: Disk Error On /boot With Dual Boot On Dual Disk

Dec 30, 2010

I have a (slightly complicated) dual/multi boot system.

I keep getting boot errors (when choosing ubuntu from the grub2 menu)

Code:
Serious errors were found while checking the disk drive for /boot

If I switch off and restart, ubuntu will then start without issue.

My setup is like this ....3 disks, one with 10.10 clean install - so Grub2, separate partitions for /, /boot and /home, one with windows 7, one with windows XP and 10.04 wubi (this is my old disk which I will trash once I'm happy with my upgrade to 10.10 & 7 on separate disks.

I installed 7 and 10.10 with ONLY their disks installed. After both were working, I added all disks and rejigged the grub2 menu (using update-grub and StartUp-Manager).

This problem only seems to occur if my previous boot was not 10.10 ( I will investigate this further). It's as if something (grub2 ?, the bios ?) is remembering part of the previous boot and not using the grub2 menu completely.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 / Win XP SP3 Dual Disk Dual Boot

Jun 5, 2010

I am quite experienced user of Ubuntu desktop / server distributions. Recently my desktop 9.10 disk failed and I decided to reinstall using 10.04. My configuration is a dual disk dual bot system. I have XP Pro SP3 on one disk and Ubuntu 10.04 on second. XP has own, untached MBR ubuntu got Grub 2 installed on the same disk as Ubuntu. Ubuntu disk is booting first in BIOS. Grub 2 detected both system, however I can boot only to Ubuntu. When I am trying to boot XP I got black screen only. Looks like booting is stack in BIOS stage, because crt+alt+del reset system.

I read Ubuntu forum, search Google and did not come with any solutions. My XP MBR is OK. I can boot directly, choosing XP HDD in BIOS as a starting disk. All entries in grub.cfg looks fine to me. I made 3 different clear installations of Ubuntu. Each with the same result. I reinstaled Grub2 with no effect. I wonder if this may be a hardware/Grub 2 compatibility issue. I am using quite old components. My motherboard is Assus P4C800 Delux. I have 5 HDDs 2 CD. Exactly the same configuration was OK with 9.10/XP dual disk dual boot using Grub legacy.

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 - Dual Boot To Single OS

Jan 16, 2010

I currently have a dual boot of Windows Vista and Ubuntu 9.10. I only had Vista purely for playing games, and using certain applications, but recently I decided that I could just configure Wine to work on my system. I was wondering if it was possible to extend the Ubuntu partition as it is over the whole drive, so that I don't lose all my stuff from Ubuntu. Or should I just keep it dual boot, for those few programs that Wine doesn't have quite down? I know this might not have much to do with anything, but I have an NVidia GFX card.

Ubuntu :: Dual Boot With Single /Home Partition?

Mar 5, 2010

Situation:
8GB SSD
#! on a 3.7GB partition, only 2.5GB used
Kuki (XFCE) on a 3.4GB partition, about 3GB used)

Both have their own /home folders within their individual /, but since I don't use this computer for documents/personal files, I figured it may be an idea to keep a 1GB partition just for my Home folder which would work for both distros. Both distros are Ubuntu based. Crunchbang uses Openbox, Kuki uses XFCE. They both are running the same kernel right now too in fact. I know how to use Gparted to create the spare 1GB partition, but I'm not sure how to get both distros to move their /home over there. I have the same usernames on each distros.

Ubuntu :: Dealing With Panels When Going From Dual To Single Screen?

Sep 20, 2010

I have a laptop. At home and at the office I hook it up to an extra monitor for extra screen space. When I do this I add some panels on the second monitor.

When I occasionaly use my laptop op the train, all my extra panels show up on my first screen, which get really cluttered.

If I delete the panels I have to recreate them when I connect my extra screen again.

Is there any way of configuring gnome so that you can easily recreate 'deleted' panels, or configure the extra panels to not show up unless the second screen is attatched ('lock panel to screen')?

Ubuntu :: Switch Between Single/dual Monitor Mode?

Jan 28, 2011

I recently hooked my television up to my computer as a second monitor so that I can watch videos on it. However, I don't always want to be in dual monitor mode. I've found that running "gksudo nvidia-settings" allows me to switch between the two modes without restarting X if I change some settings around and click "apply".

Is there a way I could setup two scripts to handle this process? The main problem I'm encountering is the fact that I change all the settings through the nvidia-settings graphical interface; therefore, I have no idea what's actually happening behind the scenes, so I don't know how to go about putting the two scripts together (what commands to issue, etc.).
