I have an issue with my task bars. My task bar that shows my active applications is on the bottom, the expand is disabled and auto hide is enabled. The task bar that has Applications, System, Places, and so on is on the top with the same preference settings. However every time I restart my system both task bars are at the top.

I have just installed Ubuntu 10.10 the other day and learned a lot about it. One thing I noticed quickly is that, the applications to not show up in the task bar, so I have to switch from one to another via ATL+Tab.Many times I accidentally open another thing of Firefox and have two of the same thing open. How do I get it show you can see which apps you have open in the task bar?

In the netbook edition, the merged launcher/taskbar shows always ALL programs running on all workspaces. I don't like it, because it becomes confusing to have too many symbols from every workspace, even when on the active one only a few applications run. So is there a way to hide application symbols for applications which don't run on the active workspace?

I want to install Gnome Color Chooser so I can edit the task bars text colors and what not. I have Compiz Fusion and Screenlets ready to go as well as my NVIDIA driver installed.

I've been running Xubuntu for the past month or two on my Acer Aspire One netbook with very few problems, and generally I've been happy. But this morning, I went to boot up my netbook to check my email and when it booted, I got to my desktop, but the bars at the top and bottom of the desktop are missing. I thought at first that it was hanging during the loading of Xubuntu and that there was a serious problem at hand that might've demanded a reinstall of Xubuntu, but upon further study once I got back to my campus, I discovered that the bars have simply disappeared and that everything else runs fine. When I try to click "Panel" in "Settings", which I'm assuming is where I'd adjust settings for said bars, nothing comes up.
As I think about it, it doesn't seem like a major problem, considering everything else still seems to function fine, but I would like to have them back again.
I have used the Ubuntu 10.04 and I had installed the software to change the boot screen of the OS. The tool is ply mouth and now after installing it I am not able to get the task bar and even select any of the menu options

that works, BUT the browser is opening BEHIND the top 'menu' bar, and the bottom 'task' bar, which obviously, is not what i want. how do i set it to either hide these 'bars' or open the browser in front of them like it does if i manually run the command from a terminal?
i have a hp laptop with a cracked screen so i'm using and external monitor. It is an HP vs15c. Now it was working fine.. perfect even.. until i was working on a second virus infect pc in bed with the keyboard connection to this pc next to me. What happened next is a bit embarrassing and also why i have no idea what i did or how to fix it. Well i found the virus in the laptop i was repairing (god i hate vista.) when i wiggled in excitement .. only the keyboard slide under my breast and the next thing i know my screen looks stretched and i have no bars. i can move my mouse beyond the right and the bottom edges of the screen and i can't change anything cause i can't get any option.. or least i don't know how to get them without the bars.. i can't even reboot if i wanted to cause my task bar is GONE. the bottom active bar is there.. off screen where i can see it but if i drag my mouse down far enough it is there to click on things. However the top bar that i need is gone. I am NOT good with terminal.. nor do i know how to open it without the top task bar. Right now i'm cursing a storm and being very angry about being a woman.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have a Fujitsu P1610 convertible running 9.10. I only like the two bars visible when I need them otherwise they just take up valuable screen space, especially on a 8.9" screen.
My problem is I cannot make the bars come up by moving the cursor via my finger. It works fine if I move the pointer via a mouse but that is not an option when in tablet mode. How can I make them come up when I move the cursor to their location via my finger?
I installed Ubuntu 9.10 with VMware Workstation 6.5.0. The install went fine and I ran the updates and everything was working great. Then I decided to change the resolution to something a little larger that was actually workable and after a restart my taskbars were all messed up. I deleted that machine and then opened up the backup. I changed the resolution again and after a restart, same result. I've tried it with multiple resolutions with different aspect ratios all with the same results. I've included a link below with a screen shot of the desktop so you can see what it's doing. Now, it's not unusable but distracting to me nonetheless.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just recently installed Lenny 5.04 on my computer and when it comes to the desktop the top and bottom bars seem to be set for a lower resolution. They only go about a third of the way across the screen and if set to be at the bottom the bottom bar is only a third of the way down the screen. The logon window fits this format but most other things go full screen (games don't though).
What is it I need to change and as an aside how do I change the screen resolution if I want everything bigger (so I can read it with my old eyes)

I know how to add programs to the side bar but can't figure out how to change the top bar menus. When I ran 32bit thru a windows vm I had a top bar where I could access the programs and no side bar. I liked it better than the 2 bar setup in my 64bit wubi install. Can it be changed?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to key information into an OpenOffice spreadsheet that is being viewed in another application, typically Firefox. Both windows are sized such that they fit on the screen at the same time. Prior to a week or so ago, this was very straight forward. Now when I click on an app in the Task Manager after opening OpenOffice, other open apps are minimized - sometimes all of them, sometimes just the most recent. I usually have Dolphin, a terminal window, Firefox, OpenOffice and sometimes a spreadsheet open. A friend who is far more familiar with Linux than I, suggested that the memory manager may have gotten confused and that logging out should clear this up. I tried that to no avail, as well as rebooting. I've also looked through the options in each of the apps that I've got open to see if there's any obvious user options that might be affecting this. I've found nothing.

(Subject of a previous post) However now having switched the PC back on after 2/3 days of not touching it, I have nothing in the top and bottom menu bars, just the icons on the desktop for the CD and a shared drive (Machine is dual boot XP/Ubuntiu courtesy of Wubi). Instead I get like a static white line on screen everytime I press the brightness control. On boot however, I can see the correct bars. It is once I start my xsession, the bars do not show up. I feel shy asking this question but, 90% of the applications I install in Ubuntu (last release), do not show up later on in the applications menu, so I cant run them. I know it seems silly, but I can't find the way to handle this inconvenience. Is there a place (like Start> All programs in Windows), were I could find and run all the programs I install?

The only problem is that the TV is not showing the outer edges of my desktop. So, I can't see the "Applications" menu, for example, or the button to click to Logout. I am using 8.04, and I have just installed matlab.I don't know if it is matlab or I never noticed it before, but my windows keep disapeering from bottom panel.Firefox is always there, but matlab keeps leaving. I can still get to it by alt-tab, but it is annoying.

When I go to open up the file manager, nothing comes up. Even when I try nautilus or sudo nautilus nothing happens. I read on another forum to use gconf-editor and nothing fixed it. What do I do? I have a customer that was raving how he likes windows 7. I asked him what he saw improved over xp, and he could only list the mouse hover preview of tasks in taskbar and media player could show all songs with word black in title. I am training my 3 and 5 year old on Ubuntu, and they (& wife) cannot grasp the difference between bottom taskbar and top applications menu. Even on my xp machine they freak out (including 10 year old with computer classes) when I minimize their applications to work on my own when they get up from the dining room machine.
And, so I though I would download "Visual tray tip" which mimics the taskbar preview on mouse hover. But on my 6 gig hard drive, p3 650 mhz 1 gig ram living room notebook (mainly flash educational gaming for kids) I really would like such a task bar preview. But upgrading Ubuntu is out of the question, since it is a functioning machine with 211 megs free on drive, and I have no stomach, time, or wish to kill it by an upgrade. So, am wishing for a sudo apt-get install solution.
I long while ago (when I was in collage) I used VIM a bit. I have not used it since and would like to get back into using it. I remember there being a way to split the screen within VIM to show common commands on the bottom portion of the screen. I've searched a while and cannot find how to set this up.
