I am using 8.04, and I have just installed matlab.I don't know if it is matlab or I never noticed it before, but my windows keep disapeering from bottom panel.Firefox is always there, but matlab keeps leaving. I can still get to it by alt-tab, but it is annoying.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an issue with my task bars. My task bar that shows my active applications is on the bottom, the expand is disabled and auto hide is enabled. The task bar that has Applications, System, Places, and so on is on the top with the same preference settings. However every time I restart my system both task bars are at the top.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI long while ago (when I was in collage) I used VIM a bit. I have not used it since and would like to get back into using it. I remember there being a way to split the screen within VIM to show common commands on the bottom portion of the screen. I've searched a while and cannot find how to set this up.

Apart from that, I have had no problems with ubuntu and its working well.

View 1 Replies View RelatedRunning 9.04 Xubuntu desktop as server and development environment. I turn off gdm once booted up. When sshing in for other computer I ran htop, and found the following multiple processes:
[Code]....
Is there any good reason why I have multiples of these, or conversely is there a problem by having them? Everything works OK. Apache is only serving up my web development pages which I work on now and then, so its not having to handle external traffic. The server is port forwarded on port 80 through the router.
Not only they are not drawn, the functionality is also gone (resizing). It is not a question of refreshing the screen because even if I wait it stays like that.
View 2 Replies View RelatedSo about an hour ago I put my computer on standby. For whatever reason I couldn't bring it back so I restarted it. It works fine except now Ubuntu has pushed my display down. This means that the bottom of my tool-bar on the bottom of the screen is cut off, and there's a black bar on the top. I'm using a T.V. screen so there is no way I can manually adjust it. I also plugged my desktop back into an old monitor and it was off-center downward too.
View 1 Replies View RelatedTo start by saying that I am brand new to anything linux. I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 32-bit to dual boot on my Windows 7 32-bit PC. This last time that I booted my pc the grub looked like this:
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.32-25-generic
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.32-25-generic (recovery mode)
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.32-24-generic
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.32-24-generic (recovery mode)
Windows 7 (loader) (on/dev/sda1)
Windows 7 (loader) (on/dev/sda2)
From what I understand the duplicate for Ubuntu is just an updated Kernal, hence the -24 to -25. What I didn't understand is why there is a duplicate for Windows 7 and what the sda1 and sda2 is? Someone please explain. When I first installed Ubuntu, there was only one listing for Ubuntu and one for Windows 7.
Also, I was wondering what you do to keep up with new kernals and remove old one's. How do you keep the Kernals from piling up? I assume that when another Kernal becomes available, there will then be 3 Ubuntu listings in the grub. One last thing is I would like some suggestions for the best way of going about learning linux. (i.e. terminal commands)
How can I have /etc/resolv.conf point to my router address as the nameserver nameserver 192.168.1.1
instead of picking up the ISP's DNS servers and using that as the nameserver entries? Reason being I have more than one ISP account, and when I change I do not want to have to remember to restart the networking service. because i often forget.
It just hit me that I'd minimized a bunch of windows....and they were nowhere to be found. Alt-Tab allows me to scroll through them, but even though I've uninstalled cairo-dock now, I still can't get them to minimize to the bottom bar. It is as if I've nothing open.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI followed the instructions from this post to reorder my boot options. But somehow I was stupid enough not to copy the windows entry, as indicated (I was mainly following only terminal instructions and such). Now I have a grub menu without my Windows 7 entry, please tell me there is a way to restore it.

I want to learn squid server but technically before going into it what you suggest me that may I first learn to configure Linux as a router,Firewall machine or do IP masquerading on a server. Because all these things are directly or indirectly involve in squid. So guide me because going to start squid i may understand Linux IP table ,how to add entries in it,how to delete entries ,I think you understand my point which i want to ask for guidence.

I've tried reinstalling GRUB, but when I run sudo update-grub, I still get this:

So, as the title says Windows 7 doesn't show up in GRUB2's selection menu, but it does show my Windows XP professional option that I had before Linux and then reinstalled. After searching very long for the problem in Linux and GRUB2 I decided to boot into XP, witch gave me the option for Windows 7 or older versions of Windows -> so I eventually can boot to it! So here is the real question: How can I make an entry for Windows 7 and for Windows XP? This is because I'd like to use a theme for GRUB and it would be to stupid to make GRUB look nice if I then come to a stupid screen of the Windows loader!
