Fedora Installation :: Flash Drive Connected - Unable To Start Up Computer

Jul 11, 2011

I am relatively new to Fedora 15, but used 13 for a while with no issues. Yesterday a windows user put a flash drive into my computer for me to copy something on to. (This may be conincidental.) I then put the computer into suspend or hibernate or whatever and now it won't start up. At all. And I'm stuck as 'everything' I need is on that computer.

Fedora Installation :: Install Fedora Into Flash Drive Instead Computer

Sep 9, 2011

Im taking the class now in college once a week. My professor said that we need to install any Linux operating systems so I chose Fedora, but he said we need at least 16GB free of space to install it in our computer, sadly i only have 1GB space left remaining. I told him about it and he told me about installing Fedora in my flash drive that has space of 16GB. I really am interested in this course and want to understand all of this stuff so can anyone tell me the process to install Fedora into flash drive so I can boot it anywhere else other than home? Also since he said I need 16GB to install it don't I got to buy 32GB flash drive at least?

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Start Computer Without External Hard Drive Plugged In

Jan 12, 2010

I finally got my new internal hdd for my laptop. I plugged it in and installed windows 7 64 bit. Then I partitioned my external hdd (WD mybook 640gb), and installed ubuntu 9.1 on a 200gb partition of it. The problem is that I didn't unplug the internal hdd before I installed ubuntu. Now the computer will not start unless I have the external hard drive plugged in.

So what should I do so that I will be able to go into windows 7 normally if the external hdd is unplugged? I would also like to be able to use ubuntu when I plug in the external hdd. I wouldn't mind having to go to the boot menu and choosing the external hard drive every time I wanted to use ubuntu.

The reason I partitioned the external hard drive was because it has a lot more space than my 250gb internal hdd, and I also wanted to leave space open to use as was intended, to back up stuff.

However, now that I think about it, I wouldn't mind partitioning the internal hdd and just leaving the external blank (which I should have done in the first place).

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Create USB Flash Drive

Jul 28, 2010

I'm getting 'File is broken' messages while trying to set up Ubuntu 10.04 on 4GB flash drive. Following instructions on [URL] I downloaded Ubuntu Desktop Edition - 32bit version. It shows up as:

ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso size on disk 542 MB (568,475,648 bytes)

I downloaded and ran the Universal USB Installer. It shows up as:

Universal-USB-Installer-v1.7.4.exe size on disk 816 KB (835,584 bytes)

I get 56 7-zip Diagnostic messages. A small sample shows:

0 C:Documents and SettingsMy Downloadsubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso
1 Data error in '.diskcasper-uuid-generic'. File is broken

Should I download the iso file again, or have I missed something in the install? I'm running Windows XP sp3 on an IBM T60 Thinkpad

Is it possible to boot into my current Wubi Ubuntu installation, and then launch the Ubuntu installer from the installation CD, and then direct this installation to the empty partition I have waiting?

Basically, I think my question is this: Does anybody know what file to run manually from the CD in order to launch the installer?

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Boot From USB Flash Drive

Jun 28, 2011

I am trying to install ubuntu 11.04 from a bootable USB flash drive. As i couldnt create the USB using the inbuilt usb creator which came with the .iso file i had downloaded, i had used universal USB installer to create it. It took a lot of time to created the bootable pendrive.

I had copied the contents of the pendrive thus created to a folder on my hard disk and named it 'PENDRIVE'. Later i had formatted the pendrive and used it for other purposes.

Today, i wanted to install ubuntu on another computer, so i copied the contents of this folder to my pendrive (instead of creating a bootable usb drive using universal USB installer again) and renamed my pendrive as 'PENDRIVE'. But when i tried to boot from it (i had changed the boot order of my computer accordingly) i got this message, 'remove any removable cd or media and press any button to restart'. Until i removed the pendrive my system refused to start and i was unable to install ubuntu. Why did this happen?

Hardware :: Lock Computer With Flash Drive

Feb 13, 2010

I recently got a new Lenovo netbook and I want to make sure that what happened to my last laptop doesn't happen to this thing. I got the idea from some Windows software called Predator, that uses a flash drive to lock a computer. I also know that most Linux distros already have the required components to facilitate this (i.e, they know when you plug in a flash drive). My question is, how do I get my netbook to run scripts or programs when a flash drive is unplugged? This is how I want it to work: The flash drive would be tethered to my wrist with a short strap (or a piece of fishing line, maybe a chain). When someone yanks the netbook away from me (i.e, a thief), they would rip the drive out of the USB port in the process. The netbook, immediately sensing that the drive is no longer plugged in, runs miscellaneous programs or scripts in an attempt to thwart the thief, like activating the screensaver, adding a password to grub, sounding an alarm, and whatever else I want it to do.

I would eventually like to expand this to bluetooth headsets, and other devices that Linux can keep track of. It also has to fit in with my current setup. I installed Xubuntu 9.10 on the netbook and set it up to use an ext3 formatted flash drive as /home. I then installed truecrypt and created two file containers, one for the flash drive (small files, like assignments for college and app config), and one in a hidden directory on the hard drive in the netbook (large files, like my VirtualBox images). This way, the system won't work right without the flash drive, and I can even switch flash drives in the future, when the one I'm currently using dies. Ideally, the system locking program/script would only check for a USB connected device with a special file on it. If I can get this set up, it would be one of the coolest Linux tricks ever pulled with a netbook, and possibly the basis for an awesome new security tool for mobile users.

Fedora Installation :: Computer Cannot Start Up After Deleting FC10?

Jun 1, 2009

My laptop is dual-boot with Windows XP and FC10 co-existing. Yesterday, I wanna re-install FC10, so I formated(deleted) all linux partitions in Windows XP. Disaster happened when i rebooted computer: the computer cannot startup at all? Now, I don't know how to deal with it. I wanna know: what can i do to start up the computer into Windows? In my opinion, computer should work well without one system in dual-boot mode. If you format C: drive on which windows are installed, for instance, the computer can boot into FC10 normally. Why it die deleting FC10?

Fedora Installation :: How To Install On A Flash Drive

May 5, 2009

I'm interested in trying out Fedora but would use it on my current Netbook (an ASUS eeePC 1000HE). I currently have Mandriva on it though which I don't want to stop using. Can I install it on a Flash Drive? If so, would it be in a sense a LiveDVD type of installation or could I actually do an install on the Flash Drive to use it as a Hard Drive? If so, what would the minimum flash drive size be?

Also, if I use the Flash Drive as a hard drive would it still have to use the internal hard drive or can all 3 partitions (swap, root, and home), be on the flash drive? Would it be possible to run it on more than one machine since I also have an Acer Aspire One?

Fedora Installation :: USB Flash Drive Install?

Jan 10, 2011

I downloaded the 32 bit Fedora 14 and burned the image to DVD. I didn't want to try to install it on the HDD because the last time I tried to install a distro that used Grub and not Grub2, the only OS I could get into from the boot screen was that OS that I installed with Grub.

I went ahead with the install in hopes that it would see my 4G flash drive, sdc was present so that is where I installed it. I mounted / in sdc1 and the bootloader in sdc. Everything seemed to install, install finished and said I could reboot. On reboot it tried to boot from the USB but just sat there, it never did boot.

Fedora Installation :: FC10 On ESATA Drive Won't Start?

Mar 5, 2009

I am new to Fedora 10 and encountered the following problem. I installed FC10 on an external eSATA hard drive (sdb) on my laptop which already has some other Linux distros on sda. I used a DVD that came with the Fedora 10 Bible, so I can assume that the DVD had no problems. The installation went OK and I got no error messages. I added the following lines to the menu.lst file of the distro that I use to boot all my distros.

title Fedora 10
root (hd1,1)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.27.15-170.2.24.fc10.i686 ro root=/dev/sdb2 rhgb quiet
initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.27.15-170.2.24.fc10.i686.img

When I boot Fedora, the blue bar at the bottom of the screen goes half-way, then gives me the error message: "mount: could not find filesystem '/dev/root' "

Ubuntu :: Unable To Use A 1.44 MB Floppy Drive On Computer?

Aug 7, 2010

I am having trouble trying to use a 1.44 MB floppy drive on my computer. I have tried to mount the drive on my computer, but all I get is the following message:

Unable to mount location No media in the drive

One post mentioned that if I were to type "id" in a terminal, the floppy would be recognized as "25(floppy)". I tried that, but "25(floppy)" didn't come up.

Also, when I tried using KFloppy to format a floppy disk, I got the following message:

Internal error: device not clearly defined

However, when I used the 'lsmod' and "cat /etc/fstab" commands, they strangely seem to recognize that my computer has a floppy.

I am attaching documentation to this post for analysis. This documentation includes information about a failed attempt to format a disk using Disk Utility. Also, I am using Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) as my operating system.
