Networking :: Allow Multiple Users In Several Countries To Access One Corporate File Depository

Oct 9, 2010

I am looking for solution that would allow multiple users distributed over several offices in several countries to access one corporate file depository. The features I am looking for, are as follows:

- There should be the way to establish user groups and then define for each folder access level (read/write) for every user/group. Every users is given his login and password.
- This file depository should be accessed from both Linux and Windows clients
- There should be a way how to sync certain folders/files on one's PC so that it is possible to work off-line and then sync back to the common depository.

Then I plan to launch some regular backup routine on that folder where all the files of depository are kept. I can imagine that the solution could be involving several tools, ie access for Windows users might involve setting up samba server, but I don't know how to establish all the limited access stuff for Win clients via samba.

Ubuntu Networking :: FTP Server With Multiple Users With Only Access To Their Own Web Root

Jul 24, 2011

I find FTP server software confusing in Linux. Using ServU for Windows for an example, all I need to do is to create users via the ServU interface and choose a folder I want that user to have access to and their permissions, and viola, they can connect to that directory, and that directory only.

But in the the land of Linux, it apparently can't be managed this easy. I have a web server with multiple domains, and therefore multiple users need access to their own web root. So with that in mind, what FTP server software should I use (there are plenty out there) and how would I go about to create a user per domain, so that they can log in using FTP to manage their site, and only have access to their own web root, and nothing else?

Ubuntu Networking :: Corporate Network Login - Dont Provide Root Access

Sep 26, 2010

In my company, they provide linux machines which has a 4 yr old Gentoo linux. Also the OS is loaded through Yukon PXE/netboot environment, and the users directory is mounted from an network location. Also they dont provide root access in these machines.

I would love to use the latest Ubuntu in this machine. Please let me know if it is possible to configure a ubuntu/xubuntu in this machine. I need to be able to login with my corporate user_id/passwd, because many of the tools use this for authentication. so just doing a ubuntu installation in this machine and mounting the n/w location would not help.

Ubuntu :: Give Multiple Users Access To Drives?

Aug 11, 2010

I just created a 2nd user on my computer. I've got the hard drive that ubuntu runs on, and then a 2tb drive for media. If the 2tb is mounted on my desktop, it won't show up on his desktop even if I'm logged out. It won't show up on his unless I unmount on mine.

If I'm logged out I'm obviously not using it. So why doesn't it show up? He has all privileges. Is there a way to make this work without having to unmount?

I'm running karmic btw. If you need computer info let me know what to type into the terminal and whatnot and I'll paste it all here!

Software :: Finding A Business Software With Multiple Settings For The Different Countries?

Mar 21, 2010

I have seen the polls for all kinds of software to get the all time favorite of the year. Fun but as a business I have no real use of that polls. What I need to see is something similar but than with business software that can be used worldwide. So with multiple settings for the different countries.

Software that can make yearly tax reports, make client registration incl. connection to banks to import spendings incl. sending invoices and, making stock reports so on. Keeping track of and recording driving miles. And most of all output has to be compatible with global Windows applications so our tax agents can import all data. I think if you run a business you can fill in your missing "BEST" software.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Users In Multiple Groups And File Permissions?

Feb 12, 2009

this directory has permissions 750 and is owned by user1 and group user1 I have an admin user that is primarily a part of group admin, but also a part of group user1 what would stop admin from having read and execute permissions on this directory? I'm running clamav and have a clamd daemon running as user admin (I could run it as any user, and I may make a special user later, but I don't want to run it as user1, user2, etc).

I have 2 (technically lots more, but let's just say 2 for now) users, user1 and user2 that have home directories /home/user1 and /home/user2. each is owned and group owned by user1:user1 and user2:user2 respectively with permissions of 750. my admin user is part of groups admin, user1, and user2 I need this to be able to scan my user's directories using the command (is this correct?):

clamdscan --move=/files/quarantine/ --config-file=/etc/clamd.d/adm.conf /home/user1/file

doing this gives the error:

/home/user1/file: lstat() failed. ERROR

If I change the directory permissions to 755, it works fine.Or if I leave the permissions 750 and change the directory group ownership to admin, it works fine. So, why would this be? Obviously it is a permissions issue, but why is it not reading admin as part of the user1 group and allowing the same permissions as it does when making the directory group-owned by admin?

Another problem is that when I tried to create "new connections" again for the second user, the keys won't work. The same keys are working for the first user. The network keys are WEP 64 bit HEX.

Server :: File Access Permissions - Working With Groups And Users?

Sep 15, 2009

Having set up many windows servers with complex permissions on shared folders, I now have to do the same in Linux (and I'm such a noob to Linux) I understand that each file/folder is assigned a user + group, and that the rights can be set for the user, the group and global (aka everybody else) My challenge is this, inside my shared folder there is a folder that should be RW to some users, READ ONLY to others, and not accessible at all to the rest of the users. (lets call the folder MyFolder ) All 3 groups have more than 1 user, so they have to be groups (right?) How would this model work in Linux ? If there is no other way, I guess I can nest the MyFolder in a folder that has permissions to allow all users that may access MyFolder, and block the rest, then on MyFolder, set owner group the RW users, and set global to READ ONLY.

Ps : The server I'm setting up runs Debian Lenny, files will be accessed from windows workstations using samba.

Ubuntu :: Give Two Client Users Permission To Access Their File System?

May 1, 2011

The desktop computer of my two children has a total of three users:

1) The superuser (me)
2) The user 1001 (my elder son)
3) The user 1002 (my younger son)

Both users 1001 and 1002 can not access their files system, and also they can not save any attachments from incoming mails.

What I tried so far:
I accessed the file manager as superuser, and went: >Root>Home. Here I right-clicked on the folder User 1001, selected properties, selected the tab 'permissions' and allowed this user to read and write into this folder. I also checked the checkbox extend this permission to all subfolders and its contents.

The problem is, when I reboot, everything is 'forgotten' and I am at quadrant zero again.

Eventually I should state that part of the folders are from a backup drive, because the hard disk had to be replaced so, once I re-installed the OS on the new hard drive, I copied the folders from the backup drive into the home folder.

One last question:
Is there a good tutorial about permissions?

Ubuntu Networking :: Allow Client Users To Access The Network?

The question is related to one single desktop machine, with 3 users.

1) the superuser (me)
2) My elder son
3) My younger son.

As superuser, I can access the network (internet router) via "Wicd" perfectly well.

Both Client users can't.

Do I have to give them special user priviledges? If yes, which ones?

Networking :: Assign Access Privileges To Users In LDAP Server ?

I have to assign certain access privileges to users authenticated via LDAP server based on the privilege level mentoned in the LDAP server. How to attain this.

Ubuntu Networking :: Staying Connected To Wireless Network With Multiple Access Points

Oct 15, 2010

I can connect to my school's wireless network using the standard network manager, but often (not always) it repeatedly disconnects and reconnects every few minutes. Occasionally it also prompts me for the security information again (even after it previously connected successfully).

By running iwconfig when it's on the fritz, I can see that it's often switching access points for the network - which is what I think is causing the problem. It disconnects and reconnects even when the signal strength for the current AP is fine, and it will often switch to an AP with a weaker signal strength.

Ubuntu Networking :: No Internet Access Through The School Proxy Only For Ubuntu Users?

I have been using ubuntu for my college work for some time, and suddenly last week for ubuntu users in a specific Department/building lost the ability to connect to the internet through the school proxy. The problem seems to have effected only our department/building .

What is so annoying is even its the same computer we have internet if we use Windows but no internet for ubuntu. When using ubuntu the DHCP server automatically assigns IP's just as before, and we can reach the Default gateway using ping, but cant reach the proxy server. When we ping the proxy we get a message saying it refuses a connection. When using firefox or chrome we get the same message when we try to browse <proxy server not available>. The network guys says that the only change they did recently is to activate ipv6. But i fail to see how this can become a problem.
