Jul 17, 2009
Filter access server through the net only to authenticated users from domain controller (Win2k). Server (Centos)(Firewall with 2 nic), which makes access to the net, with only 196MB RAM (PIII500Mhz), so I do not want a solution based on proxy or what resources it uses large I want a solution with a script that runs at login on windows this check series HDD and to communicate with Linux server that's open accessor another simple solutionNow just use only MAC filtering on

At the school i work in i have a server2k3 server that provides a domain to all the windows clients, aswell as a fedora server that acts as an imaging machine and webserver.
Im rather concious of the fact that if for any reason the Server2k3 server was to die there is no backup of active directory, or anything that can take its place whilst a replacement is found.
So is it possible to use a fedora machine with samba as a secondary domain controller? so it can be used as a login server, and has a copy of AD.

The company I work for, as usual, is Microsoft-centric. I'm attempting to integrate my Ubuntu server into the domain to allow domain users to authenticate to the server and access file shares using Samba. Here's my current configuration:

Im an IT manager for a small company with a small ammount of users. We already use linux for our data server and I would like to implement a domain controller. All of our user machines are WIndows XP pro.
Ive been reading up on using OpenLDAP as an alternative to active directory.
What I want is just a simple active directory like server, with a GUI if possible.
What do I need to look at and how would I go about setting this up? Im fairly proficient with Ubuntu already, I just need to be pointed in the right direction.
Is it even possible to have my windows users be able to log in to their machines using an ubuntu domain controller?

I'm working for a smallish non-profit that has gone through some recent growing pains. We have two sites that are currently without a domain controller, and no money for MS licenses, so I was thinking of trying to add a couple of additional Linux machines (we already run Linux for web services internally, and I've set up a test case previously to see if I could get a server to join the domain, which was a success) and was trying to find out if I can get them to act as Domain Controllers without replacing the domain. The main issue that I'm having at those locations is drive mappings are not happening correctly against our DFS file servers. The one other location that had this issue had it go away when we added a local DC. The domain is a Server 2008 domain.

I have setup Ubuntu servers as LAMP machines but that's pretty much it.
I need to work on an existing CentOS server that I will see for the first time tomorrow. I am told that, as of right now, it is "just serving the internet." The goal is to set it up to be a primary domain controller by which I mean:
1) A user should be able to login to the server from any of the workstations and then see their server stored documents
2) The clients will be a mixed bag of Linux, Windows and Mac machines
I could use a push in the right direction as to what I need to do to get this all setup. I know how to setup users and home folders (I use webmin typically and I understand that there is a version for CentOS) but clearly there is more that I need to do. I am really curious as to how I would map the necessary drives on the client machines upon login and have the users have automatic access to their data regardless of the client machine they log in to.

I'm trying to set up an mail filter for our domain. At the moment we're using ClearOS as the filter, works OK but I still get something through and the blacklist and whitelist doesn't seem to work. I was hoping to set up a mail filter on my own, using Spamassassin and/or something else. It seems I have to buy subscription at ClearOS to make it update better or something. I might just do that, it's just tempting to find a way to do it on "my own". I tried to follow these instructions but I don't seem to go anywhere... ...I began with setting up the base server as it is shown there. I've setup quite a few Linux servers, mainly as firewall/gateway kind of things but also some DNS servers, web servers and so on.
I have one mail server and the mail filter is supposed to be on the outside to filter mail before it hits the mail server.

Im trying to get postfix to filter my outgoing mail and basically drop everything that is not in my hash table.
So far I managed to get this going
Code:
Code:
Unfortunately those rules also apply to incoming messages. My goal is to disallow users on my host to change their "MAIL FROM" to anything they like and restrict them to domains I specify. I'm aware that the local part still is variable and a user of domain "foo.com" could use a email of domain "bar.com", but still some of my troubles would be solved if I get this running.

I joined my Ubuntu 1004 LST to Windows 2003 AD.
it always frozen my ssh login window when the DC crashes. when the DC crashes, the putty won't give me the password prompt and will go inactive directly after a while no matter what username(local or domain users) I give
is it possible to avoid to check domain users before it gives me the password prompt? or, we can make it to check if the user is a local user first?

We have a LAN with mixed Windows workstations win 2000, winxp, vista, win 7, linux servers all in a workgroup. Most applications used on the LAN are windows based, with a growing number of python apps. A friend suggested a Primary Domain Controller would be a better way to manage logins, resources etc. I don't wont to use a Windows based PDC, what would you suggest as a linux based PDC? I have heard about TURNKEY PDC, but it uses Samba 3 and apparently doesn't handle Active Directory in Windows.

Just looking for the best/most reliable setup. In a nutshell, I would love to have a Domain Controller no DHCP File server. I want to leave the DHCP to the router. I need virtual to run a software off from it. Samba server and that is basically it. My questions are:
1. Can I have a Domain Controller without DHCP server?
2. Should I run virtual server headless? so I dont install any gui?
3. This should have been my 1st question. I have two disks, is raid handled by the Bios or do I have to do something in linux(DMRAID)?
I have worked with many if not all the things I have mentioned here, however, I have never done it from scratch.

I'm using ubuntu server 10.04 with openvpn installed on it. My vpn is working fine, all the users can connect without any issue. My problem is that I'm unable to filter the VPN traffic using openvpn. I can't allow all users to be able to interact with other vpn users. I need to avoid this kind of traffic.I was trying to build an iptables firewall, but I just noticed that my openvpn traffic isn't being filtered by iptables. In FORWARD chain, no matter what rule I use openvpn would continue to allow traffic between my clients. It does appear that openvpn is skipping FORWARD chain? For example:
Code:
# iptables -L FORWARD -nv
Chain FORWARD (policy DROP 0 packets, 0 bytes)
