Networking :: Configuring Samba For Multiple Users On A LAN?
May 26, 2009
I am trying to configure samba for anyone of the scenarios in the subject. here's what my smb.conf looks like:
Code:
workgroup = RnD
[Samba Share]
comment = Samba share on Ubuntu!
path = /srv/sharedfolder
available = yes
[code]....
The error while trying to connect to the share is:
smbd/service.c:make_connection_snum(1082) Can't become connected user!

Im currently using an english book to setup my samba server, and im having problems understanding it.
I dont want to use root to join clients to the domain; i prefer creating a plain user.
Ok, so, the steps i follow are:
net groupmap add unixgroup=srvadmins ntgroup="Server Admins"
net groupmap add ntgroup="Domain Admins" unixgroup=dmnadmins rid=512 type=d
net rpc rights grant 'ORAServer Admins' seMachineAccountPrivilege
This way, i have a group called srvadmins with permissions to join clients, a group called dmnadmins with permissions to manage users and other permissions, and root.
Now, users: "root", "dmnadmin"(from dmnadmins group) and "srvadmin" (from srvadmins group) can add machines to domain. Root because is root, srvadmin because i granted permissions, and dmnadmin because is admin
So i wonder, why srvadmins group is needed to be granted privileges?
I tryed to lower dmnadmins privileges by revoking semachineaccountprivilege privilege, but didnt worked
net rpc rights revoke 'ORADomain Admins' seMachineAccountPrivilege
looks like its privileges comes from another group and it user managed to add a machine to the domain correctly.
Ok, so, is this really usefull? why do i need 3 kind of users to be able to join to the domain?

I'm having problems in accessing a storage device (NAS 200 Linksys) in a network via Ubuntu. I think the problem is with the configuration of Samba.
On my computer the login and password are the same in Ubuntu (9.04), samba and Win XP.
Under windows I view the device in the network and, when I click on its icon, a window opens with the directories that have access.
Under Ubuntu, I can see all the computers in my workgroup and the device. However when I click on its icon only a blank window is opened.
I share printers without problems.
In my settings for the samba security = user.
Does anyone know if there is any configuration that allows access to the NAS?

First off I would like to install a GUI for samba. After that I want to set up my network so that router stays as the server for the network I have four windows computers already hanging off of the router. This machine which has Slackware on it is hardwired, directly connected, to the router via cat-5 cables. I have samba installed already and I just need to configure it correctly.

For some simulation, I am trying to configure a setup of 3 ubuntu desktops (one of them with multiple network cards) to behave in the following way:
Each one of them should be a separate network not seeing the others (including multicast addresses) They need to have internet access through the machine with multiple network cards. So from the point of view of each machine they define a LAN in which it is the only device and have internet access through the gateway machine.
What do I need to do to configure these machines for the above setup?

I have 2 users on my HPmini 210 netbook running Squeeze. I just found out that it does not connect to existing wireless networks when I login as the second user. Is it supposed to happen by default or am I supposed to do something to make that happen? Another problem is that when I tried to create "new connections" again for the second user, the keys won't work. The same keys are working for the first user. The network keys are WEP 64 bit HEX.

I find FTP server software confusing in Linux. Using ServU for Windows for an example, all I need to do is to create users via the ServU interface and choose a folder I want that user to have access to and their permissions, and viola, they can connect to that directory, and that directory only.
But in the the land of Linux, it apparently can't be managed this easy. I have a web server with multiple domains, and therefore multiple users need access to their own web root. So with that in mind, what FTP server software should I use (there are plenty out there) and how would I go about to create a user per domain, so that they can log in using FTP to manage their site, and only have access to their own web root, and nothing else?

I'm not sure if this is even possible and I've tired searching, but I can't seem to figure it out. I have a few shares setup in Samba. I want them to prompt for a username and password. If an invalid user/pass is entered I want the user to be authenticated as a guest.

I am looking for solution that would allow multiple users distributed over several offices in several countries to access one corporate file depository. The features I am looking for, are as follows:
- There should be the way to establish user groups and then define for each folder access level (read/write) for every user/group. Every users is given his login and password.
- This file depository should be accessed from both Linux and Windows clients
- There should be a way how to sync certain folders/files on one's PC so that it is possible to work off-line and then sync back to the common depository.
Then I plan to launch some regular backup routine on that folder where all the files of depository are kept. I can imagine that the solution could be involving several tools, ie access for Windows users might involve setting up samba server, but I don't know how to establish all the limited access stuff for Win clients via samba.

I work as an system administrator for AIX and Linux servers. We have an FTP server running in Linux which has shared folders to Windows domain using Samba. The new requirement is to map users created to Linux machine to Windows users in such a way that, when a user logins into Windows machine with an ID say "X123" in domain "TEST", his access control to the samba shares should reflect based on the same user ID created in Linux machine.(FYI. Both the Windows and LINUX machines are in same network and domain). Please let me know the step by step procedure to configure Linux machine (smb.conf entries or any new file to be created for user mapping) to identify Windows user Login and provide access restrictions accordingly.

We have an existing Windows 2000 network that I am trying to add an Ubuntu 8.04 server to. I have put links into the windows domain DFS to the linux machine's samba shares.
The shares work fine for local users that are physically on the same network (192.168.0.X). Remote users from other offices or dialing in with a vpn client can not access the these particular folders off the DFS. However, they can map them directly from the ubuntu server.

If I want to add Windows & Mac users as Samba users, must I first add them all as Ubuntu users? If so, since none of the other users will actually be working on the Ubuntu Server, how do I disable the other non-admin users on the Ubuntu Server login screen. I am using Webmin to administer some server settings, and command line for others.

I setup samba file sharing to auto mount in fstab. Everything works great except when a computer has more than on user account.
The folders in mnt are owned by root and ownership changes to the first user account no matter what user logs in. So only the first user can edit files in the mounted share.
Anyone got a clue why this is happening? Seems the mount folders should be changing ownership to the user that is logged in.

I have a fileserver that I want to share out samba shares. However, i configured samba to have another netbios (SAN) and my windows box still sees whoopn-SAN which is the name I gave to my server when i installed it. Now I am using 9.10 and I know that i can create a share from the gnome gui in nautilus and that appears to be a windows like share. How can I turn OFF the windows like shares that ubuntu does out of the box and use ONLY samba? I ask because there appears to be a conflict of permissions b/w samba and this stuff.

i have to different routers in my home. One is at&t dsl modem other is dlink wireless n router.
I have my ubuntu server connected to my att modem as this is the only way I can get it to work. As I can only connect to my server from the outside of my home.
Problem is my desktop and laptops use the dlink because its faster and giver me more bandwidth so everything in my home is wirelessly connected to it.
I use ubuntu as web server, proxy server, and dns server. I have all my computers useing the proxy server my just inputting my proxy address as 192.168.1.0 which is my ubuntu address. But my computers use 192.168.0.0 as this is how dlink is setup.
So anyone know how I can get all my pc's on the network 192.168.0.0 to connected to my samba server which is on 192.168.1.0? Can I setup my dlink dir-615 as a access point? So that it shows up in the 192.168.1.0 network. Or can i configure my pc's to look into the 192.168.1.0 network to see the samba server?

We need to implement ntlm for apache[URL]... Apparently this requires joining our linux host to our domain. however we have two active directory servers in seperate domains, one ads is for users only, the other is for computers only. Testing kerb and joining your linux host to the domain requires you enter in a user that has permissions to join the domain on ADS. But how do I join a computer to a domain where my account does not exist, the ADS that only contains computers is the one I need to join.

I was following the above guide to get a mail server up and running. The major difference in it all is the fact that my server is running i686, but I compensated for that easily, just a difference in folder/RPM names. [URL]. Otherwise I followed it to a "T." Everything seemed to go smoothly, no trips or falls until the very end.
After installing squirrelmail and trying to login on admin@withfrosted.com returns ERROR:
Connection dropped by IMAP server.
Uncle google tells me to run this command because SELinux is overzealous:
setsebool -P httpd_can_network_connect=1
And that works, and I thought I was home free. However, after that, I'm presented with a new error. However, google told me to send an email to create the mailbox because it wasn't there, yet. So I send a test email on over, but that fails, and so does mailx. Next I created /home/vmail/withfrosted.com/admin while logged into the vmail user for proper permissions. Squirrelmail now logs into the mail box but gives me yet another new error, in which I am now stuck on:
ERROR:
ERROR: Could not complete request.
Query: SELECT "INBOX"
Reason Given: Unable to open this mailbox.
As a summary, because I'm all over the place, here:
1. Can't view the mailbox via Squirrelmail.
2. Can't receive email, tried with mailx and a test email from gmail.
Regarding #2, the gmail test email, from the maillog:

I was wondering if anyone has a solution to my problem: I run Ubuntu 11.04 on my laptop (everything is great) but when I come home I like to connect it to a larger monitor. This will work fine, but presently the only way for me to get that to work is to go into my nVidia settings and reconfigure the displays every time I do this. Is there I can make my system recognize it should change displays as soon as I plug in the monitor?

I just abandoned Windows 7 for Ubuntu. I am trying to setup my monitors on my desktop. I have 3 monitors (i have 2 graphics cards with 2 monitors per graphics card -- so potential for 4 monitors).
Currently I have 2 of the monitors working, but they only mirror each other. I tried going in to System-Preferences-Monitors to configure them the way I want to, but nothing i do stops them from mirroring each other.

Alright, I have this issue on both SystemRescueCD and Debian Squeeze. I have an ASUS P5Q Turbo board that supports hardware RAID. If I configure an array and then start the Linux installer or boot the rescue CD, I get /dev/sda and /dev/sdb instead of an array. What gives? I need to start installing within the hour so I am desperate for an answer!

I've been busy with configuring Samba with the 389-Directory Server (former Fedora Directory Server) for the past weeks and I almost have everything working. The last thing (I hope) that I haven working are the smbldap-tools which I'd like to use for adding computers and users to the domain. The part where I'm stuck is with the security certificates. I don know how to get the client certificates out of my installation.
My smbldap.conf file contains this:
Code:
# $Source: $
# $Id: smbldap.conf,v 1.18 2005/05/27 14:28:47 jtournier Exp $
#
# smbldap-tools.conf : Q & D configuration file for smbldap-tools
# Purpose :
# . be the configuration file for all smbldap-tools scripts .....
I used the setupssl2.sh script to setup ssl for my 389-ds, which seemed to have worked fine. I however simply have no clou how to get client certificates out of this.
