View 9 Repliesa friend of mine just given me an old 2004 IBM NetVista 8305 desktop and suggested to use Linux Ubuntu which is something new to me. So i installed it via USB memory stick & it works. After installation of the OS I am impressed with functionality & speed. when i conect the external hard drive via usb it doesn't show & i tried my usb flash disc it showed the same problem. I tried both disk in my laptop (Windows XP) & it works.

View 3 Replies View RelatedBack in Febuary, my wife bought a Toshiba Satilite from Wal-Mart and a few days ago the hard drive got toasted. So now I'm using an 8gig usb drive as the boot drive. I also have 2 other flash drives for downloads and such but overall I am very pleased.
I'm running 11.04 32 bit and was wandering if 64 bit made a difference. I've got 4 gigs of ddr3. It's slow to boot, but once it's running, it's faster then Windows 7. Very nice.
Is there anything I should chage, use, since I'm running it off a flash drive??
I have 3 seperat drives, 2 x 16 gigs and an 8 gig, and was wandering which one would be best for booting off of? What do I look for??

After a lot of frustration with flash on Linux (specifically Hulu), I decided to do something instead of complaining. Hardware acclerated flash is the one thing keeping Windows on my system.
Please support GPU acceleration on Linux and vote for the following bug. Mac OSX has 1000 votes. Linux has 139. Let's show Adobe that linux is just as important as OSX.
I bought an 8GB flash drive because my D drive doesn't read DVDs. Anyway, my goal is to install Linux ubuntu and have it be my OS (replacing Windows XP). Last night I went to the Ubuntu homepage and downloaded the Ubuntu desktop edition 32-bit and put it on my flash drive. I followed the instructions on how to open and run it, but I was never asked about whether I want Linux to run side by side with Windows or if I want it to replace Windows. It downloaded the whole program, my computer restarted and then (on a black screen) it asked if I wanted to use Windows XP Home Edition or Linux Ubuntu. It's really frustrating because it took a while to download and install it in the first place AND to top that off, when I tried to use Ubuntu it went to a black screen and at the top said that there was an error. So I uninstalled all the ubuntu program and software and now I have a clean slate and want to try this again. I am a complete n00b. Could someone please walk me through how I can go about downloading (w/ links plz), installing and making ubuntu my ONLY OS on my computer via a flash drive? I'm desperate and I don't want to go through all of that and make the same mistake again!

However, when I insert it into the USB slot, the light on the drive glows, but I'm unable to mount the drive, neither does ubuntu detect it.I disconnected the flash drive, and then run `dmesg | tail`. I need to re-format an external drive. All the instructions I have found start with figuring out where the drive is mounted (sda, hda, etc.). However, as soon as my RH Linux machine sees the drive's format (ntfs) it decides it won't even mount it in the first place. Gives me an error message. Also, the drive doesn't show up at all via "df -k". how to convince RHL to be a little more accepting?

I have been trying to get my 1tb External USB Hard Drive; WD External HD1021; but although I can see it in "Disk Utility" it does not appear on my Desktop as it used to and as it holds many family photographs and almost all of my music collection, some 150gb I am a little concerned. Is there a way of keeping this on the desktop without having to do this all the time? I have the latest ubuntu version.
I can't finish installing Ubuntu 10.04. I have a Corsair Nova 128 GB solid state drive, the 128 GB model of this series, to be precise. I have an ASUS P5N-T Deluxe motherboard. It has a six xSATA 3 Gb/s ports NVIDIA MediaShield RAID controlelr on it. In Disk Utility, it shows up as nVidia Corporation MCP55 SATA Controller, using the sata_nv driver. I have the 128 GB drive plugged into one of these ports. I have disabled RAID completely in the BIOS.
When I boot the Live CD and run GParted, the drive shows up fine. I've got a 70.81 GiB NTFS partition (Windows 7), a 4.00 GiB swap partition, and a 44.43 GiB ext4 partition, onto which I had planned to install Ubuntu 10.04. I created the swap and ext4 partitions earlier, but at one point, that was unpartitioned space.
The problem is that when I run the Install app to install Ubuntu 10.04 on my SSD, when I get to step 4 of 8 (Prepare partitions), exactly zero drives show up. A while ago, I had a couple of Seagate 1.5 TB mirrored drives plugged into two of the ports, and they showed up fine, but no 128 GB SSD. In trying to troubleshoot this problem, I unplugged those and just left the SSD, and zero drives showed up. I disabled RAID in the BIOS, and it still doesn't show up. I moved the SSD from the port it was plugged into and plugged it into one of the ports that one of the 1.5 TB drives was plugged into. It still doesn't show up.
Nuts and bolts of it: Seagate 1.5 TB drive plugged into port: no problem. Corsair Nova 128 GB SSD plugged into port: doesn't show up. But again, only in the Install utility. In Disk Utility under SATA Host Adapter/MCP55 SATA Controller, I see 128 GB Solid-State Disk/ATA Corsair CSSD-V128GB2 listed plain as day. In GParted, I see a 119.24 GiB /dev/sda device with the partitions I've created on it plain as day. I can pull up a terminal and mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/ssd without any problem and access files on it. But for whatever reasons, the Install program and only the Install program can't see it. I'm dead in the water. Obviously, I can't use Ubuntu if I can't install it. What can I do to get this disk drive detected?

Install of 10.4 64 bit not showing choice of sata drives on install. W 7 on sata a drive, SUSE 11 on sata b drive. Need to load Ubuntu 10.4 on drive b, but not given choice of drives on the install. Only "clear drive" listed on the install window.
This is not the case on 32 bit, a graph with drives listed. W7 a runs Adobe CS5, the Ubuntu 10.4 has excellent font, type display on the live cd.
Ubuntu Breezy 5.10 (don't suggest an upgrade - it works!) I'm trying to setup a script which updates some software on the hard drive from a directory on a USB Flash drive.After I've plugged in the USB drive and seen it recognised by automount:

A little while ago I installed lubuntu 10.04 on a partition on my (somewhat) old sony vaio desktop. It's great, I do love it - only problem is that the DVD drive is not recognised - at least it doesn't show up in the file manager, and isn't listed when I do "ls -l /media".

Managed to install codecs, flash player, media players, chrome and opera browsers and all other things I need. My only problem is that as of about a week ago my external DVD player is not recognized any more by CentOS so I am unable to watch movies. My external DVD player is Magnavox and it works great but CentOS does not recognize it any more. I used to watch movies in CentOS in SMPlayer all the time. What to do to get it back?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI support an application that runs on RHEL 5.X and uses multipath to access a SAN. A Bare Metal Restore backup is done using Storix which needs to write directly to a /dev/sd* device, or at least what you configure it to use.The problem is if the USB drive is plugged in when the system is booted it can be identified as /dev/sdb and the the SAN LUNs are /dev/sdc and up. If the configuration file is then set up to use /dev/sdb and then later the system is booted with the USB drive not plugged in the SAN LUNs use /dev/sdb and up, which is fine because multipathd handles that. But when the USB drive is plugged in and becomes say /dev/sdx and the Storix configuration file is not changed, the Storix backup will still use /dev/sdb and corrupt what is there on the SAN.
I assume a udev rule could be used to make the USB drive appear as the same name, maybe /dev/storixI am looking for some good pointers to how to do this with udev or what ever. The application will soon be running on RHEL 6.X also, so hopefully what ever solution someone points me to will still work on it as well

I have this little problem: when I open a folder with images from my network drive, I can't see the previews of the files.If the folder is on the local drive no issues, but with the remote one... no luck.I checked around for a solution, without results.. do you know if there is a solution for this little issue
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've just installed a second hard drive in my laptop with windows 7 on one drive and Ubuntu on the other. I selected the side-by-side install in the Ubuntu install and let Ubuntu do the rest. Unfortunately Grub isn't seeing the windows install even after reconfiguring grub. However, the windows 7 drive is visible in Ubuntu and all the windows files are there intact.
Does anyone know how I can make grub see Windows 7 so I can boot into it?
Removed hard drive from our office server to check model number (windows pc). reinstalled same hardrive and now i can't connect to server from the network (MAC). it gives me error code -43.

The reason I asked is I used cd-writing programs (Brasero, k3b, etc) for music cds to rip into lossless formats (AAC and FLAC), and it sometimes does not come out right from ripping. And thought writing to the flash drive would get rid of those little errors in the songs since there are no moving parts..

View 9 Replies View RelatedI put together a NAS-like device using a 2-slot USB JBOD enclosure and an eBox-3300. I'm using Ubuntu Server 8.04 Hardy as an OS for the eBox. I have two WD EARS drives hat I intend to use in the USB enclosure, one 1TB large, the other 2TB. I managed to install Hardy on the 1TB drive and boot from it. The 2TB drive is preformatted XFS. If I add the 2TB drive in the enclosure, it does not show up in /dev in ubuntu. In the device's BIOS, both drives appear just fine with correct IDs, so I'm guessing the problem is with ubuntu.
