Jan 17, 2010After I've setup the ubuntu 9.10 I've found that the internet connection working incorrectly. I can ping or even connect to the internet sites with the telnet and see the raw html pages, but when I ran the software center or mozilla I have timeout error message. As a proxy settings I've setup the direct connection in both system and mozilla proxy configurations but it takes no reason. If I put the IP address instead of the domain name in the address bar of the mozilla browser then its loaded the web page correctly. It looks like this problem is relative to some system configuration of X about network (cause telnet google.com 80 working right). I'm using the dhcp connection to the D-Link DSL-504T router.

Oct 29, 2010I have a NFS mounted home dir, so i couldn't use .face for the users in the gdm Face Browser. In older Ubuntu versions I would have just put the images in /usr/share/pixmaps/faces/ and it worked.
For some reason that doesn't work any more. Can't tell you which was the last version it worked on, but i will try to find out and post later!
right now I use Ubuntu 10.10 with gdm 2.30.5
tried: jpg, png and username without extension also tried: /usr/local/share/pixmaps/faces/ and to configure it in /etc/gdm/custom.conf
couldn't find anything online, regarding the gdm doc for 2.30 it still should work that way!

Apr 20, 2011I set up an Ubuntu server install yesterday. I have used Ubuntu desktop for quite some time and have no issue with command line. I have everything working, except SMB shares. The share still works if I enter it's path manually (//server/share) but even shares I want to be viewable by browsing are not. (Attempted to browse in Nautilus, Windows and Mac file managers.) Server is running 10.10 (AMD64). Dump of smb.conf (generated with SWAT, which also works otherwise) follows. Solution with either SWAT or editing the file manually is fine.

I am curious as to why is that when I click the Firefox icon to launch the internet from the menu bar a Linux terminal window has to be open. If I close that particular terminal, (which by the way says "Terminal" and does not show my chosen host name) Firefox closes. If I go to Applications, then Internet, then Firefox to launch the browser, the terminal doesn't open.

Dec 28, 2009I installed Fedora 12 yesterday. After installation, I added some packages like gstreamer*, amarok, vlc etc.
Once I rebooted, all desktop icons became invisible and I'm unable to open file browser and browse files/folders.
When I log out, I get this message saying "File Manager not responding!"
I initially thought I messed up with settings, and created a new account. Still no use.
BTW, I use Gnome Desktop Environment.
I went further and installed Fedora 12 again. And did the same package installation. And after reboot, no desktop items is visible and can't browse files/folders using file browser (nautilus).

May 22, 2010Video is ok, but never any sound. I went through and made sure the HDMI is selected as the audio device and I upgraded to the latest driver binary.
HDMI sound works without the ATI proprietary driver installed, but the needed resolution is not available and the picture overlaps the edges on my 32" LCD. At least I know it is not a hardware issue. ALSA is loaded and selected as the sound manager, but the volume controls don't appear in the ALSA slider console.
I tested the cable and display on another computer. I am using a new Gigabyte GA-MA78LM-SH2, it is the integrated video.

Jun 26, 2010I got my hands on my first real server hardware yesterday - a PIII 600 MHz COMPAQ Proliant 3000 with 1.8 GB RAM, Smart Array 3200 controller and 4x18.2GB SCSI ULTRA 3 hard drives. RAM is upgraded from original and USB card added - otherwise hardware arrangement appears to be original.
Minimal 10.04 installed (35 minutes boot to boot) as Server 10.04 could not detect CD drive. My problem? Everything works but it does not look right. Probably my bigger problem?? I know almost nothing about RAID and the more I read the more ethereal my understanding seems to become.
When installing, I chose to install with LVM on c0d0. Grub written to MBR. I have posted df -l, fdisk -l and lshw output below. Would someone tell me if this looks correct and, possibly, offer some pointers if it does not.

So I got my new laptop a few days ago,loaded up ubuntu.After starting up minecraft to connect to my server I realised that the fps was going from 50 to 1 and back to 50 again EVERY SECOND so obviously this isn't normal.After a quick google search every one on windows seems to have no problem. There are no results for linux.
Edit: Yes I know why the are you using a x86 os on a computer with 8 gigs of ram? At the time of installation all I had was no internet access and a live cd from LUD with ubuntu on it

Oct 27, 2010Got to say first off, I have LOVED the 10.10 release, absolutely adore it. Only problem that I have noticed thus far, is that when I use any of the non standard buttons, it causes my left clicking to stop working.
It's not a big deal but something that does come in handy every once in a while =/

1. I tried rfkill unblock all with negative results
2. rfkill list phy0: Wireless LAN, Soft blocked: no, Hard blocked: yes
3. look in the file system: NetworkingEnabled=true, WirelessEnabled=false, WWANEnabled=true
