Are they faster than on Windows?
This would apply for any Linux distribution.
Whenever I try going into "Desktop effects" it says:
Accelerated 3D graphics is not available
Desktop effects require hardware 3D support.
I'm guessing this is a driver issue? I tried installing a driver for it, I think it was Catalyst but it didn't really work.
I recently installed openSUSE on a new Toshiba and i'm getting very choppy video while watching videos on ....., justin.tv, etc. The video is fine as long as I don't full screen. However, when I try to fullscreen a stream on justin.tv or a ..... video, it instantly becomes choppy and video is extremely delayed in relation to the sound. The sound still continues at it's regular pace, however the video lags behind and is just choppy in general. Also, not sure if this helps, but i'm running an i3 2310M.

It has a pentium 4 2.8Ghz, 1GB of ram(I think), a 120GB HDD...etc. Anyway, so when I install Ubuntu I try to install the graphics drivers for it. I go to intels website. There were two drivers available for Linux for my adapter:
the i915graphics and a intelgraphics driver. Both were tar.gz. When I try to install them, it can't for some reason. I tried "sudo sh" in terminal, I tried extracting the package and executing it...etc. Nothing works. It does give me a message in terminal though.
I am trying to use an ATI Radeon x300 graphics card with my current system setup with fedora 12 but i am having an openGL issue. I am trying to create a 3D model using comsol and i get an error like:
Failed to initialize 3D graphics. OpenGL not fully supported.
This is a hardware/software issue with the graphics card... not the program COMSOL. How could i enable openGL support to correct this issue?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've loaded Fedora and must say what a nice OS! But I'm having some issues getting the video working correctly so let me jump right into the issue. The video is very garbled and hard to read. can't seem to find a way to correct what would appear to be a driver issue. Here are a list of things tried:
- display works fine with Ubuntu
- display is clear but is chopped off when using an external monitor from onboard vga slot
The video card is an ATI radeon and the linux drivers from the ATI site don't work with the new images that are out yet.
I can't install my graphics card Radeon HD 3200, I use the same driver as I always do. But this time it did not work, it boots with an X error and I can't get into gnome.
Here is the Xorg log.

I've recently managed to install 11.4 with both Gnome 2.32 and KDE 4.6, moving from 11.3. However, there seems to be a significant speed degradation in terms of opening applications, switching windows, clicking on links etc. I have installed the Radeon graphics drivers from YaST, without much success. IMHO, Gnome seems slightly faster than KDE; however, it's still not great.
My machine worked well with 11.3 and seemed to be going pretty well; however, I wanted new and shiny, so. The PC has an AMD dual-core chip (can't remember the exact spec). Alternatively, is there good benchmarking software I could try to see if I can get an idea of my real speed?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've upgraded (reinstalled) from Slackware 13.1 to 13.37 on an old iMac and have problems with slow graphics.
lspci says this about the graphics card:
Code:
With Slackware 13.1 I had no KMS enabled and graphics speed was okay. It wasn't very good, but okay for everyday work. Now with 13.37 it's extremely slow. glxgears runs with only around 38 fps, no matter what I do. And every now and then when logging off, I get a black screen and no new kdm-login. But I can ssh into that machine and restart X by issuing 'init 3;init 4'.
KMS is enabled (I've also tried disabling it, but then KDE crashes right after logging in) and it's a fresh installation of 13.37 with a 2.6.37.6 kernel.
What can I do?
I have to admin I don't know this video and X stuff very well and I used to have machines with NVIDIA cards.
If there's anything else than the usual Xorg.0.log needed.
To me the log doesn't look like there's any problem whatsoever:

I'm having some graphics driver trouble on my Lenovo Thinkpad T500. I tried getting the ATI Proprietary driver to work (fglrx) but everytime I boot my X just crashes. Now I'm trying to use the open source driver, but i dont think its working becaues a) It doesn't detect that an external monitor is plugged in (for dual-view) and b) when i run glxinfo i get a "Error of failed request: BadRequest" message.

I am thinking of getting a graphics tablet for my Fedora box, probably a Wacom Intuos4 or a Bamboo Pen and Touch. I'm looking at those models simply because they seem to be the most popular ones out there. Before I buy I want to know if they work with Fedora 13. The company seems to officially support only Windows and Mac. It is easy to find the drivers and install them? What graphics software do they work with? I've never had a graphics tablet before.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm having a few problems with XOrg freezing while playing World of Goo (not the worlds most intense game for graphics, but seemingly too much for my rig). I initially posted on the developer's forums, but they said a full X freeze wouldn't be the game. Testing with BZFlag got me a full Xorg freeze even quicker than with WoG. Later I even tried glxgears to see how well it ran and even that froze the system! My only way of recovering is SysReq-REISUB.
Specs/system details:
2.4GHz Core 2 Duo (E6600)
2GB RAM
Radeon X1950XTX using the open source drivers
openSUSE 11.2 (64-bit - patched up to date and without an xorg.conf)
[code].....
So, is there a fix for the huge instability with 3D graphics, or am I stuck between a rock and a hard place with the options of outdated official drivers that may not work with the latest kernels (and would need manually rebuilding even if they did) or flakey open drivers that are guaranteed to freeze at some point, it is just a matter of when?
I recently bought a HIS HD 4670 IceQ card but can't get it to work in openSUSE 11.2 Under Windows the card works fine, so I assume there is no hardware problem. I tried this card in two computers with different mainboards, but it does not work. Several times I reinstalled openSUSE completely from scratch (tried both 32bit and 64bit versions) but no luck. The problem: Right after the installation it uses the radeonhd driver. This basically works, but without 3D (no Tuxracer...) and even 2D is slow (dragging around windows on the desktop is slow, page scrolling in firefox also).
Then I tried to install the ati proprietary driver, both from rpm (the rpm's from the "official" ati repository have a checksum error, as already mentioned in another thread!), and by downloading the driver from AMD and running the install script. The install script seems to work successfully. The kernel module is compiled and loaded. "aticonfig --initial" makes a rudimentary xorg.conf. But then, when starting X, it does not work:
- on one of the 2 tested systems, even kdm does not start, the screen simply stays black with a frozen cursor top left, even CTRL+ALT+backspace doesn't do anything - on the other system, kdm starts and shows the login screen, but when trying to start KDE kwin crashes, and the windows have no title bar (when I googled for this symptome I found lots of people also having this problem...) - trying to configure the system using sax2 didn't help, even sax2 doesn't display properly I have now spent 4 days trying to get this to work and now I'm really tired of those buggy graphics drivers, be it proprietary or open source...
Can anyone recommend me a graphics card that is approximately as powerful as the radeon 4670 (I bought this card because it is said to be the most economical card (both in price and energy consumption) that allows to play Anno 1404 reasonably well on windows), but is known to work in openSUSE 11.2, even in 3D mode (tuxracer...)?
I'm using openSUSE 11.4 on a HP Pavilion laptop, and it was working fine until last week or so. A zypper update seems to have upgraded to a package with a nasty bug though: it now boots into a black screen, instead of showing kdm.And the only option after that is to forcefully shut down the machine;ither Ctrl+Alt+F1 nor Ctrl+Backspace nor Ctrl+Alt+Del does anything. Not sure if this means the kernel hangs,or just that X blocks all keyboard input as well. The issue with powering off with the hardware button is that I don't get full log files (especially kdm.log) so it's a bit hard to investigate...I have tried many things, here are the results:
* Default radeon driver + kdm = black screen
* nomodeset + radeonhd driver + kdm = black screen [driver doesn't support HD4200 anyway]
* nomodeset + radeon driver explicitely requested + kdm = black screen

I have an ATI Radeon 9000 Graphics card that Ubuntu 9.10 doesn't seem to recognize no matter what I do. Knowing that its an older card and that ATI stopped support for it a while ago, I was wondering if anyone knows if I would have better luck on Ubuntu 8.04. I can't get 3d or opengl to work, or install the correct ATI Driver.
View 2 Replies View RelatedSo Ubuntu had been working great in Lucid, and when I upgraded to Maverick the support for my graphics card stopped. It has the proper driver ("ATI/AMD Proprietary FGLRX graphics driver") active and fglrx, fglrx-amdccle and fglrx-modaliases are all at 2:8.780-0ubuntu2. I also have the xorg radeon package installed. Yet, whenever I try to enable desktop effects (to get compiz to work) it says that Desktop effects could not be enabled.

Noticed that ATI card is heating heavely with default installation and I would like disable it and switch to use Intel's GMA. Afterwards read from documentation that 5450 is not supported, so no wonder. So what is the simplest way of disabling ATI and using only Intel's gma? Here's what I got with lspci -v:

I'm having problems with my graphics. I have ATI mobility radeon hd 3650 and I get an issue with desktop effects. They can't be enabled even though the card is supported. I had some trouble with installation and used this thread's instructions: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=9133906. I finally seem to have it installed and configured but I still can't use desktop effects. Also this whole process started because I couldn't get minecraft working getting the GLX13 error.
