Ubuntu Networking :: Intel 5100 WiFi Card - Dell Latitude E6400 - Suddenly WiFi LED On The Computer Stops Blinking
May 4, 2011I am running (K)Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 64bit on a Dell Latitude E6400, WiFi Card Intel 5100. Never had any problems with networking. Up to about 2 weeks ago. I do realize there have been quite a few posts with this network adaptor, but non really described the problem I have here.
What happens is that suddenly the WiFi LED on the computer stops blinking, the WiFi connection gets disrupted, and the device is not recognized anymore when checking ifconfig. Only cold restarting the machine helps then... it will work for a while (between 1 and 20 minutes) and then crash again.
On Windows 7 the card works perfectly fine. With Ubuntu 11.04 in Live CD mode I have the same effects (connection crashes after a while). Also tried booting an older kernel, no success.

Jul 1, 2011I had a problem with the new network manager a week ago and got it solved with help from the forum so now I'm back again. I have a dual boot with Windows 7 (I have to use it when serving my corporate masters) so I wasn't in my Fedora partition much this week.
I just noticed this and I'm positive it wasn't doing it before my network manager problem but I'm not sure when it started or if they're related.
I'm running F15. The machine is an HP Elitebook 8440p and has a wifi light that is also a touch button to turn the wireless on/off. Whenever there is activity on the network now it blinks between orange and blue. I know that isn't really a big deal but it's really annoying and is driving me completely nuts!! The normal behavior is orange when it's off, solid blue when it's on (or connected) and blinks orange/blue just while it's connecting. During network activity it's always been just solid blue and that's what I want.
I found a script that some Ubuntu users said fixed the same problem but when I tried to copy it the directory they said to put it in "/etc/network/ifup.d" doesn't exist. I'm assuming that's a distro difference between Ubuntu and Fedora?
Has anyone else seen this? Any ideas how to fix it?

Mar 23, 2010How can I stop my wifi roaming when I don't want it to? I connect to the internet through one of a number of hotspots in my area, all with the same name. Frequently, sometimes several times an hour, my machine will spontaneously switch to a much weaker hotspot than the one I normally use. This causes an enormous amount of disruption, with today's disruption really taking the biscuit: I was in the middle of an international VOIP conversation with a potential employer.
I can't remember whether things were better when I was using wicd instead of network manager, but wicd had a huge hit on my system resources (2% or more of CPU), so it's not a great solution. In the KDE interface to Network Manager you can specify which ESSID to connect to, but these settings are ignored.

Feb 19, 2010I'm using the linksys wmp300n with ndiswrapper to connect to a belkin wireless router with a static ip (192.168.2.3). The rest of the PCs in the house have .2, .4, and .5 only running windows XP and 7. This one won't stay connected during large file transfers within the network or over the internet in Ubuntu. I made a script to restart ndiswrapper but I have to do it every 2 or 3 min during a file transfer. I can't play online games at all. No ssh sessions for more than a few min... so on and so forth. None of these issues happen in Windows 7 but when it was first installed it had to do something with dhcp before it would stay connected. Windows wouldn't tell me what was going on though. code...

I have a problem with other devices around my house that operate on this range of frequencies and it effects ubuntu while its booting, to the extent that it won�t load. My wireless router is on the 2000000 khz range therefore I only really need Ubuntu to look for devices on this range of frequencies. If anyone know a way to prevent Ubuntu looking on the 5000000 khz range by editing something I would be very greatful to know how to do this.
As at the moment I am having to boot about 5 times until it eventually decided to load. Sometimes the only way I can get in, is by going into recovery mode, dropping to terminal and typing in: "sudo gdm" and eventually I get it. Which is a right pain. Jan 7, 2011I have installed the wifidrivers needed to use the wifi on the 1018 in Ubuntu Netbook Edition. It works until I get asked to install 5 (Sorry, don't remember their name) more updates, now I can not see Wireless networks under the networkmanager, It does not help installing the driver again, and I can not remove it either. It says the driver is activated but not in use. Also note that in desktop mode I lost my other workspaces, I can not change what window is on top and the quit, minimize and full window on windows is not there anymore.

Mar 9, 2011I am trying to install any version of ubuntu (I even tried so far another version called jollicloud) but the result is always the same...The computer is a Dell Mini 9. I have pulled out it's SSD because it has broken.I managed to install about some months ago an ubuntu netbook version (10.04, not sure) which all worked fine from a 8GB usb stick Here are my steps:
1. Download ubuntu either netbook or standard version
2. Make a bootable flash with Unetbootin from ubuntu or other programs from windows
3. Put the flash disk and the second 8GB flash to the dell mini 9
4. Boot Ubuntu live from the first flash (sometimes I think I must put the second flash after the boot so it finds only the live version... If I have put both flashes sometimes it won' t boot)
5. install ubuntu to the other flash (to the 8GB flash drive)
6. reboot
and then...only a blinking cursor is appearing to the top left of the screen with nothing else happening...Shift does not do anything.I have some suspicion that there is no Grub at all but I am not sure for this.I am sure there is a way to make it because I ve done it before, but I don't remeber how!
Ubuntu :: Blinking Underscore While Booting?
May 14, 2011My parents just upgraded from their 8+ year old desktop to a newer dell. The old one has XP on it and would barely run, lots of bloatware, viruses, etc.. I tried putting an ubuntu 10.10 disc to boot from it but the old desktop suddenly stopped recognizing mouse and keyboard input so I couldn't change the boot preferences. I took the hard drive out and plugged it into my desktop, copied all the useful files to my hard drive, then wiped it. I then installed ubuntu on the old -and now empty- hard drive by having it plugged into my computer.
I put the hard drive back in the old desktop and found that the keyboard now works. I can press F2 or F12 and change things around and whatnot. However, when I let it pass the screen that prompts me to press F2 or F12, it goes to a screen with a blinking underscore in the top left of the screen and gets stuck there.
what's causing it to get stuck on this screen?

Feb 16, 2010I just replaced my PSU and now my computer is not booting up. To make sure that my new psu is not causing the problem, I put my old one back in but it still doesn't boot up. My system powers on, motherboard led glows, the processor starts running and so does the graphics card. The monitor stays blank though. Nothing shows up on the monitor. Just a blank screen with the monitor led blinking. What could be the problem ? It was working fine before I replaced my psu.
