Ubuntu Networking :: How To Stop The Wifi Roaming

Mar 23, 2010

How can I stop my wifi roaming when I don't want it to? I connect to the internet through one of a number of hotspots in my area, all with the same name. Frequently, sometimes several times an hour, my machine will spontaneously switch to a much weaker hotspot than the one I normally use. This causes an enormous amount of disruption, with today's disruption really taking the biscuit: I was in the middle of an international VOIP conversation with a potential employer.

I can't remember whether things were better when I was using wicd instead of network manager, but wicd had a huge hit on my system resources (2% or more of CPU), so it's not a great solution. In the KDE interface to Network Manager you can specify which ESSID to connect to, but these settings are ignored.

Ubuntu Networking :: Stop Wifi Radio Killswitch From Disabling USB Wifi Device

Jul 3, 2010

My laptop has an internal wireless device and a button to turn it on/off, but since it has bad reception I use an external USB wireless adapter. The problem is that if I turn the internal wireless device off using the button, it also turns the USB wireless adapter off.Is there anyway to use the killswitch (the button) only for the internal wireless device? This only started to happen in Ubuntu 10.04.

Debian Configuration :: Roaming Wifi Without Managing App

Aug 23, 2010

I have finally weaned my laptop from network manager by setting up my /etc/network/interfaces file. # The loopback network interface auto lo iface lo inet loopback

# The primary network interface allow-hotplug eth0iface eth0 inet dhcp
# Wireless Setup auto wlan0 iface wlan0 inet dhcp wireless-essid linksysn

wireless automatically connects to my home wireless network (linksysn). But suppose I wanted to take this laptop to the coffee house where they have free wifi. I am assuming that my wireless will not automatically connect to any other wifi hotspot except linksysn. So how do i set it up to roam like NM did?

I'm using the linksys wmp300n with ndiswrapper to connect to a belkin wireless router with a static ip (192.168.2.3). The rest of the PCs in the house have .2, .4, and .5 only running windows XP and 7. This one won't stay connected during large file transfers within the network or over the internet in Ubuntu. I made a script to restart ndiswrapper but I have to do it every 2 or 3 min during a file transfer. I can't play online games at all. No ssh sessions for more than a few min... so on and so forth. None of these issues happen in Windows 7 but when it was first installed it had to do something with dhcp before it would stay connected. Windows wouldn't tell me what was going on though. code...

Networking :: IP Addresses Roaming - Change On Regular Intervals

Dec 27, 2010

I'm doing some research into ip roaming and haven't come across a whole lot. My definition of IP roaming is the client / server changing of IP addresses on a regular basis using a pre-set number of IP addresses that both client and server have knowledge of. Specifically I'm interested in if anyone knows of any Linux applications that allow for IP address changing on regular intervals.

Ubuntu :: Stop (when Loading) Looking For Wifi Signal's In The 5000000 Khz Range?

Apr 30, 2010

Does anyone know how to stop ubuntu (when loading) looking for wifi signal's in the 5000000 khz range? I have a problem with other devices around my house that operate on this range of frequencies and it effects ubuntu while its booting, to the extent that it wont load. My wireless router is on the 2000000 khz range therefore I only really need Ubuntu to look for devices on this range of frequencies. If anyone know a way to prevent Ubuntu looking on the 5000000 khz range by editing something I would be very greatful to know how to do this.

As at the moment I am having to boot about 5 times until it eventually decided to load. Sometimes the only way I can get in, is by going into recovery mode, dropping to terminal and typing in: "sudo gdm" and eventually I get it. Which is a right pain. Please see my previous post outlining my problem: [URL]

It works until I get asked to install 5 (Sorry, don't remember their name) more updates, now I can not see Wireless networks under the networkmanager, It does not help installing the driver again, and I can not remove it either. It says the driver is activated but not in use. Also note that in desktop mode I lost my other workspaces, I can not change what window is on top and the quit, minimize and full window on windows is not there anymore.

What I want is really a combination of two things: Unison, which enables me to work without a network connection. An SFTP filesystem so that changes are immediatly sent to the server, not JUST at login and logout, which makes login and logout extremely slow. Is there any combination I could use? Could I make unison sync extremely frequently?

May 4, 2011

I am running (K)Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 64bit on a Dell Latitude E6400, WiFi Card Intel 5100. Never had any problems with networking. Up to about 2 weeks ago. I do realize there have been quite a few posts with this network adaptor, but non really described the problem I have here.

What happens is that suddenly the WiFi LED on the computer stops blinking, the WiFi connection gets disrupted, and the device is not recognized anymore when checking ifconfig. Only cold restarting the machine helps then... it will work for a while (between 1 and 20 minutes) and then crash again.

On Windows 7 the card works perfectly fine. With Ubuntu 11.04 in Live CD mode I have the same effects (connection crashes after a while). Also tried booting an older kernel, no success.

You get two options only, WEP and a key-length. So, I would like to install someway to make this wireless connection more configurable.

Ubuntu Servers :: Configure Samba With Roaming Profiles

I can at least connect to shares with user names of the AD. Anyway my client (WinXP) currently logs on to the AD and works from there. I want to configure it so that all accounts are going to use roaming profiles, but here it comes... I want to store the roaming profiles on the extra Ubuntu server.

Ubuntu :: Roaming Profiles - Login More Than One Computer At The Same Time?

Jul 7, 2010

I've been thinking about setting up roaming profiles so that I can access my profile and settings from any computer in the house that has ubuntu booting on it. One thing that concerns me is, what happens if I log in using my profile from more than one computer at the same time? A couple examples:

1. I'm working on something on one pc, and go downstairs. A little while later I fire up a laptop down there and want to browse the web. What would happen?

2. I am logged in to my desktop, but let it go to standby. I later log on to a different pc on the network and load the same profile that was logged in (but in standby). What happens to the state of the profile when the desktop wakes up again?

i can't roaming to another ap2 although the laptop just put beside ap2

1. can i set some files that indicate what strength F13 will detect another ap ?

2. when the ap's strength less than a value, it take about 30's or more to detect & transfer from weak ap to strength ap, does that situation normal? or how to speed up the ap's roaming?

Server :: Active Directory Roaming Profiles On Ubuntu External HDD?

Nov 4, 2009

I have a Ubuntu 9.10 desktop, with an external HD shared via Samba, with some users and folders on it. I have another computer on the network running Winblows Server 03', handling Active Directory (that I am still setting up and testing before any serious implementation.) I've been testing GPOs I am building on an XP SP3 virtual machine that is running off my Ubuntu desktop as well, that I joined to the AD domain.

However, the Domain Controller doesn't have a very big hard drive, and I'd like to take advantage of having 930GB free on this external hard drive for roaming user profiles, especially since I backup all of the drive contents every week. This would simplify a lot for me. What would you recommend is the best way to go about setting this up with my Samba configuration? I have a feeling /media/Slave/UserProfiles permissions will get somewhat complex.

Debian Configuration :: Setup Roaming Profiles On Our Samba PDC?

Aug 22, 2010

I'm trying to setup roaming profiles on our Samba PDC. I've been at it all day, running into a lot of issues with access denied, and going around changing permissions hoping to fix it

The problem seems to have evolved over the day, getting worse. Right now it's an error message on logging in: Windows cannot locate the server copy of your roaming profile.....

DETAIL- The network name cannot be found. In addition, the user does not have access to any shares by default.

The server can be accessed manually and the user can connect to shares. The server can be pinged by the client. The client's user profiles do not get stored or retrieved on logout/in

Debian Configuration :: Samba - Get The Roaming Profiles Working

Sep 17, 2010

I've been at this for hours now and am still not getting it to work. I recently installed Squeeze on my home server, overwriting a Lenny installation. I've been able to add my NT domain accounts back in and pdbedit shows the expeted values - e.g.:

root@whenim64:/home/samba/profiles# pdbedit -Lv garydale
Unix username: garydale
NT username:
Account Flags: [U ]
User SID: S-1-5-21-832165970-4128531365-4003982369-1002
Primary Group SID: S-1-5-21-832165970-4128531365-4003982369-513
Full Name: Gary Dale
[Code].....

However, although I can log on, I can't get the roaming profiles working. I get the "windows cannot locate the server copy of your roaming profile" message. Since my Unix account names/numbers are the same and the profiles are in the previously working /home folder that didn't get touched, I can't see how it''s a permissions problem. Noneheless, I removed an old profile which should have let WIndows create a new one. It didn't. I still got the same error. I did have to reinstate the groupmaps (don't know why the samba install doesn't do this) but they seem OK.

Slackware :: WLAN Roaming Configuration - Connect To Hot Spots

I'd like to go one step further now, with my laptop. As I'll be travelling more often in the foreseeable future, I'd like to be able to connect to WLAN hot spots in hotels, railway stations and air ports with a minimum of hassle. What's the best way to go about it?

Of course, Wicd is quite useful, but I'd prefer a KDE application, and I'd like to be able to define "profiles" for various scenarios. Certainly I am not the first Slackware user with this requiremnent, and probably there are tons or docs regarding this topic. However, searching LQ and the internet I haven't found what I am looking for.
