View 4 RepliesI am running Server 10. I have a requirement to perform an action before the MySQL service starts, and perform another action after MySQL service stops.
I found the init script for MySQL under /etc/init/mysql.conf. I added my thing to the pre-start script there and works fine.
I am having trouble finding the script that stops the server so I can modify.
could someone please suggest me some nice sidebar thing...Please don't suggest Screenlets or Desklets.
View 8 Replies View RelatedBeing on a low budget and I can't afford to buy Redhat would you recommend using Fedora for setting up dedicated servers? I know Fedora is known to be "bleeding edge" in technology, which concerns me with the stability of the server. Would you recommend a more stable Linux distro? I was also wondering if there is any way to know what these web hosting companies are using in their servers: [url]
View 9 Replies View RelatedCan anyone suggest a wireless-N adapter (USB or PCI) that is well supported under F13? And do you think an upgrade from G to N is worth it? I'm probably going to upgrade my router to N in any case as the old one is buggy and/or dying.
View 2 Replies View RelatedCan anyone point me to a good apache GUI?
Ive read online about webmin, ebox etc but are there any others? I'm using gnome on my server and i did a search through the Ubuntu software Centre but nothing came up.
I was wondering if I can use a different port for WebMin down below 1024 where I forward ports to my Linux box, rather than the current 10,000.
The reason is I forward higher ports to the Windows machine at present.
The goal is to keep Linux services down in the low port range. Suggestions?
I initially thought the problem had to do with the Lucid Lynx upgrade, a lot of people have been reporting similar issues with drive mapping and things along those line. My issue is that an external drive, formatted in FAT32 appears to be corrupted, and overtime begins to read or mounts as 'read-only.'
What I've read, and deduced, is that this is ultimately and issue with the drive. I've backed it up, reformatted, and been able to write to the drive successfully, but I've been moving a lot of files (backing up) and the system has been reporting input/output errors in transferring some files (through the GUI).
The only thing I can think of, is that the device itself is corrupted or damaged, and that I need to be thinking of other back-up options for the future. Any suggestions on disk-doctoring? I'm hoping to do a clean-install of the OS once I back up my files manually.
Anybody know of a good server health/status/performance monitoring apps? I have only used cacti never really tried anything else.

View 1 Replies View RelatedIs there any good LDAP-Administration tool ?
I need to setup test accounts and groups.
For that I can test a LDAP-to-DataBase synchronization tool.
Anything with which I can quickly add users /Groups in the directory structure.
I don't care which LDAP-server, as long as it is stable enough to run for 10 minutes.
I'm interested in setting up and providing my own DNS services for public use. I have two separate server machines and can easily put an extra NIC card or two in any machine, if required. What would it take to create such a service like ZoneEdit or EveryDNS?
I know I'd probably need to register 2+ static IP addresses thru Comcast and open a whole host of ports on my router. How would I set this up in terms of software? Is BIND the right tool for the job with a control panel in Usermin/Webmin?
I just updated my server, (Ubuntu 8.04) and had to restart. Now I can no longer SSH into my Linux box or access my website from the internet. Apache is running and everything worked fine before the restart.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've got a basic apache2 setup running w/ multiple virtual hosts, would like to try SSL (i.e. https).
I've got the IP networking side well and truly sorted but I need guidance on the apache/ssl config side. I have installed mod_ssl.
Does anyone have a good guide for Fedora that's recent? All I can find are ubuntu and old fedora 'core' guides, so not sure how much applies to F12. The best ones I can find so far is
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/fo...er/apache2/SSL
http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/ssl/ssl_howto.html
Still a Linux noob here. I downloaded openssh and did a ./configure and a make install. How can I run openssh as a service? When I try /etc/init.d/ssh restart it doesn't work. It's installed in /etc/openssh.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've got a small web hosting service, for some of my friends. Where I want my friends to be able to have dedicated virtual servers just for a simple LAMP and ftp-server.
I've got quite limited hardware.
AMD Athlon II (Dual core)
4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 RAM
100 Mbit Fiber-lan ( Dynamic IP )
What I would want to know is how to create the virtual servers in an truly optimal way. Should I use KVM or VirtualBox? How can I make the request to mydomain.org go to one of the virtual servers and the request to anotherdomain.com go to another virtual server?
If the virtual server is the best solution.
* How much memory should be sufficient for a simple LAMP/FTP-server?
* What would be the most optimal settings for my limited hardware capacity?
all the tutorials i found for ushare and mediatomb shows it installed on desktop and not server. it also requires an account to be logged in. once logged it, you have to run a command to start it up. some questions.
1) is there a way to run either one w/o having to log into an account? so if say i restarted the server, it'll run the programs w/o me having to log in.
2) i would like to specify a directory to share music and movies. is one better than the other? clients that i plan to use are songbird, itunes (maybe), and vlc - maybe xbox 360 and ps3. other client suggestions?
3) other dlna server suggestions? this will be running on ubuntu 10 or 11 desktop or server. but the main thing i'm looking for is what i mentioned in #1.

I have a fresh new F13 installation and I am not linux expert, I need to test Fedora for some reasons. When I try to start HTTPD or vncserver services, status display as "This service is being refreshed right now", it keeps like this for a long moment. Closing and reopening services applet, I notice that both services are stopped. I googled about apache, the 1st thing I understood is to search error_log, opened it in gedit, nothing is written in this file.

View 6 Replies View RelatedShort story: I have a problem with one of my services (mediatomb) - it requires an md RAID array to be mounted in order to start, because it uses files from it. $remote_fs is added by default to the "Required-Start" line of the init script, so I thought that this should be enough. However, the mediatomb service fails to start on boot, but starts just fine when I execute "service mediatomb start" later. The array is entered in /etc/fstab and is automatically mounted on boot.
Long story...
This is my file server (Ubuntu Server 10.10), which has a raid array created with mdadm (mounted on /z), and the root filesystem is located on an USB thumb drive. I've installed mediatomb, but I wanted to put its database files on the raid array instead of the root fs, so I've symlinked /var/lib/mediatomb (the default path) to /z/mediatomb on the array. This is because the mediatomb DB is supposed to be updated fairly often, so I didn't want it to stay on the flash drive.
Problem is, the mediatomb service can't start on boot - in /var/log/mediatomb.log, it says "2011-03-07 19:22:47 ERROR: /var/lib/mediatomb : 20 x No such file or directory". As I said, it works fine when manually started later...
This is the fstab entry for the raid array code...
