Jul 27, 2010

Note: the image may load slowly as it is a server on my home internet connection

as you can see, most icons are in the notification area, but skype and any programs with icons opened after appear always on top in the top left corner.
I've tried moving things about to no avail

- The icons in my desktop is always changing randomly upon startup
- Evince can't remember the last page i read before quitting
- Unable to mount usb automatically (have to do 'mount /dev/sdc1/ /media/usb' and 'df -h' every startup)
All of these problems happened just recently. I thought they were coming from unresolved packaging but after upgrading and distro-upgrading from packman only, and gnome, the problems still persist. If it helps, here's my zypper lr -d
[Code]...

I have a couple things I think is my video card. One annoying thing it does is to put half inch square boxes in random places and times that might be trying to display what was in that spot before you changed the window. Sometimes it can be important information so I had to find a way to do something about it. I couldn't get rid of them but I could move them out of the way by moving the pointer to a different area and turning the scroll wheel. That would put the square in the new area where the pointer was.
The other thing is very bad scroll control. Sometimes I would have to use the arrows in the corner. Sometimes I had to drag the slider which moved hard, not at all or very delayed. The squares also make highlighting very difficult. Because an area will not be highlighted you don't know the results until you paste it. It might be perfect. I believe the video card is on the motherboard. I do have a spare slot so If needed I could put in a new one. Where is my title bar at the top of a screen which allows you to move it around or -minimize or maximize or close.

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on my iBook and for some reason the Notification Area (2.30.2) just stopped working. Like it shows it's there, yet I'm not seeing any icons or anything show up. Which is the only way I get online from it at the moment. Right now I'm typing this from someone else's laptop.

I have Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS installed on an AMD K6-2 system. When logging in with LXDE, certain icons such as the HP Toolbox and the Update Manager do not appear on the LXDE Task Bar when they should. The HP icon should appear after logging in (It automatically does with XFCE.) For the HP icon to appear, I have to manually run HPLIP Toolbox.
The various Update Manager icons (gray - package manager working, orange - updates available, red - important updates available) also do not appear at all under LXDE automatically and the only way to see if there are any updates is to manually run Update Manager after a period of time, which should not be necessary. These same icons also automatically appear under XFCE.
Is there something that I can look at to see why these are not appearing? I know there is a file /etc/xdg/lxsession/LXDE/autostart but I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it. Under "Desktop Session Settings", the only two items listed are Screensaver and PolicyKit Authorization Agent, neither of these are checked. When adding hp-toolbox to the autostart file, it completely launched the HP Toolbox in addition to displaying the icon.
I only want the icon to appear and would launch hp-toolbox as needed. The only icons that appear automatically after an LXDE login, are the Network Connection, ScreenLock and Shutdown icons. It does not appear to be kernel-dependent as I had both the generic and 386 kernels installed on this (now have only the 386 installed) and the icons did not appear with either kernel used.

I'm a old ubuntu user and It's a long time a have this problem (probably since Gutsy Gibbon) but just now I decided to ask for the community help to solve it, until now I fault every try.randomly, on my desktop and screen in general, appears something like confused characters composing strange writing, and the way to remove them is by selecting a empty area around them, dragging it with the left mouse button.
Those sort of writing appears everywhere on the screen but never over a open application area, those characters looks like a sort of refresh error that I'm unable to definitively remove. To let you better understand how this problem looks like, I link a snapshot of my desktop to show you the problem.

Alright, so I followed the step by step instructions from this page: [URL]. When I downloaded the file, the file appeared on my desktop as an unknown file with the name "ubuntu-10.04.1-desktop-i386". I thought this was strange because it didn't have the ".iso" after it. I tried looking for a download location for the file that would give me a .iso file, but whenever I download the file it just appears on my desktop as "ubuntu-10.04.1-desktop-i386". After that, I downloaded Infra Recorder, and followed those instructions. Everything was going fine and when the progress bar hit 100%, Infra Recorder gave me some kind of error.
I can't recall exactly what it said, but it said to check the log file or something like that. I wasn't sure what to do at this point, so I tried installing Ubuntu anyway. I rebooted with the CD and it took me to the burgundy screen and it started to load, but then the installation crashed to an MS DOS screen with some gibberish that I didn't understand. Obviously the CD I wrote didn't have all of the installation files it needed. What should I do? Is there something wrong with the file that I downloaded? My computer is a Dell Vostro 200 and I am running Windows XP.

I am running Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex dual-booting with Vista for work purposes. I have been running the two successfully for quite a few months now and am just getting to grips with it. I have lost my desktop at start-up. I get all the way past the Login to a blank desktop background (just colour - no image) and the only thing visible is a Terminal window. As I am not familiar with Linux command lines I can't do very much. I have even tried reinstalling Ubuntu which showed no error messages that I noticed but, I have the same result. At the moment I have used Supergrub to allow me to boot straight to Vista till I get things sorted out.

EVERY SINGLE TIME when I try to close the Nautilus File Browser (ie when I go to my Documents folder), the desktop flashes all the icons on the desktop a couple of times (for a sec you would see no icons on the desktop) before everything goes back to normal.

I recently installed virtual box on debian and after it had finished my terminal informed me that I could remove some "unnecessary" software by use of sudo apt-get autoremove. When I did this, some of the icons on the desktop changed and all of the icons in the drop down menu on the bar at the top of the screen also changed to ordinary folder symbols. The theme that I was using also went away. I restarted the computer and it booted back into a shell prompt with no GUI. I tried to get back to the GUI using alt+f7 but it didn't seem to exist

If I use Dosbox in full screen mode, and then exit back to KDE, my desktop icons get shuffled around.I'm using the desktop folder view in KDE 4.4.3I've noticed that this also happens with ScummVM as well, so I think it's more a KDE issue?

I was sitting watching a TV show on the internet (streaming from channel 4) and all of a sudden I get a request from an unknown IP address, outside of my local network attempting to access my ubuntu desktop, I obviously declined straight away and stupidly didn't take note of the IP I've checked my firewall settings and no ports are being forwarded, everything is as it should be. I am running Ubuntu 11.04, and a little bit concerned. As of now I have completely disabled remote desktop on my laptop.

I got a new desktop and figured this would be a great oppurtunity to update to 11.3 (from 11.2) while migrating files.. However I have had lots of problems with it, right of the bat. My first installation got messed up right after it was done, so I had to redo everything. Now the system boots up all fine but I am experiencing crashes every once in a while. By crashes I mean nothing works; the system monitor graphs freeze, the clock freezes, system doesnt respond to key strokes. The only remedy is then to "force an unexpected reboot" (ref: IT Crowd). I have a feeling that it has to do with Yast or something related to Yast, as it is the only common denominator between the crashes so far. However the system doesnt crash everytime I start Yast so I cant really say anything conclusively..
I have also realised that when I attach a secondary screen the graphics get kinda screwed as well.. if that makes any sense... Here are my system details: Dell Vostro Desktop with Core i7 64bit processor
8 x 2.8Ghz
6gig ram
graphics card: GeForce GT220
What could be the problem here? btw let me know if anyone wants to see logs from /var/log/messages

I installed ubuntu 11.04 as a dual boot with XP Pro on dell d830 laptop. Have had it on the laptop for a couple days and everything worked greatattempted to see what if Compiz would work and could not get it going. The computer froze upd to hard restart. When I did that and came back I found I have no desktop icons; if I log out and relog back in but switch to classic ubuntu the desktop is fine (of course not the Unity screen). I removed Compiz and attempted to remove and reinstall Unity based on a Google search but nothing changed. Two questions:1. what is the best next move to see if I can get the Unity icons and correct interface back on the desktop.

Did I make the right choice with Ubuntu?
