I installed MySQL on my Ubuntu 10.04 desktop. As I need it only once a month I removed it from all runlevels but mysql is still running after boot up. "lsof" shows that it is running and listening for connections.
After I login my desktop preferences are not loaded. If I try to change them (Control cneter-> apparence) I get a message that says: Unable to start the settings manager 'gnome-settings-daemon'.Without the GNOME settings manager running, some preferences may not take effect. This could indicate a problem with DBus, or a non-GNOME (e.g. KDE) settings manager may already be active and conflicting with the GNOME settings manager. The first lines of .xsession-errors show:
/etc/X11/xim: Checking whether an input method should be started. HOSTNAME: Undefined variable. XDG_DATA_DIRS: Undefined variable.
i've written small tool in C which makes measurements on my router (OpenWrt White Russian).
It is working as a deamon. If the tool is started manually, everything works fine. If it is started per script on startup, the following system call doesn't work :
rc = system (command); the returned rc in this case is 256.
first i thought it is a problems with the user rights for the tool, so i have added +s to it. but that didn't help. as i said, when the daemon is started by hand, the system call works fine.
I'm trying desperately to get ipvs load balancing up and running using the RedHat Piranha utility.I'll post my config files later in the message. In order to simplify things, I've only got one LVS director running (no backup director), and I've only got one realserver running.I can ping the realserver static ip from the LVS director when the pulse daemon is NOT started.About one minute after I start the pulse daemon, I can no longer ping the realserver static ip.I can ping the realserver static ip from any other box on the subnetThe LVS app requires that the LVS director be able to ping (or CONNECT) the realserver as a sanity check to make sure the realserver(s) is/are still alive.
Im trying to instal Sun Virtualbox but when download completes and I click on install I get the following error>>Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus) I wont even bother with this software if there are others out there that are as easy to use. I used it on Windows and thought it was great ! (thats how I eventually switched to Linux, by using it virtually at first)
It always shows a same icon, for every application which shows message tray icon. I just did some shell extension work after fresh installation of F15, nothing related on message tray. Don't know how to change it back.Dose anyone knows how to customize message tray icon for gnome-shell?
"Places" menu appearing there in Documents, Pictures ... when you click on any menu started a music player instead of opening the folder. Ubuntu 10.10.
I have created a script named ssh_inotify.sh to check /var/log/auth.log log file for newly started ssh session and display a question message box. This script uses inotifywait to monitor this above log file for modify file event and zenity to create question message boxes. Now i have created a startup service config file named ssh_inotify under /etc/init.d folder and placed the script ssh_inotify.sh under /usr/sbin and chmod this script to be executable.
The service config file ssh_inotify uses start-stop-daemon to run this script as background process. Now theproblem is that when i start this service using sudo service ssh_inotify start, the service is started, I can confirm this using ps -A | grep ssh_inotify also i can check for the PID associated with it under /var/run/ssh_inotify.pid. Now when i ssh to my machine, i do not get the question message box, I am writing in log file and in that i can see that the message under cancel button option for question message box is getting printed. This script runs perfectly when run directly or using start-stop-daemon command directly (exact command as typed in service config file above) on terminal, but not when this same command is executed using service file. Can someone please suggest me the solution and reason for such behavior when same command executed under different mode (using service or directly from terminal). If you guys require code, i can attach the files (currently i am in office so don't have access to these files.)
Each time after boot, I have to wait for proximately 2 minutes before Firefox starts showing any web pages. I believe the delay is caused by the following issue: Code: Apr 7 21:03:18 linux-kr6c nm-dispatcher.action: cript '/etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d/netcontrol_global_hooks' exited with error status 1.Apr 7 21:03:18 linux-kr6c nm-dispatcher.action: cript '/etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d/nfs' exited with error status 2. why, every time I started gnome, update-manager show me the error icon?seems like there are errors but if I lunch apt-get update or aptitude update it works great.
When I click the Firefox icon, normally I can maximize and minimize in the window (either top or bottom panel). This has disappeared and I am not sure why. I had installed [URL... and suddenly after deleting/cleaning it up/restoring panels I cannot see why or how I can easily maximize or minimize any panel, not just Firefox.
I have seen when people click on an icon that is on the doc, it opens up a pop up window that has application you can click on. I have Cairo Dock. With it, I can add a shortcut menu and a Stack icon. From there,I can add applications, but they have a generic *.desktop icon. Is there any way to get the same Mac effect from Cairo Dock, or maybe even a shortcut to the applications folder in Ubuntu?By the way, can someone tell me the default path to the applications folder?"
I have a Network file system that I would like to mount on demand. Is there a way (as a user, not as sudo) to make an icon om my desktop that I can click to mount and unmount. I would like the icon to be persistent - i.e., it should not go away when I unmount the share.
10.10....can't click on a desktop icon and get it to open...for example a mounted drive BUT if I right click and select open it will but none of the icons in the open drive will then open upon clicking...this is a relatively new install and it worked fine until very recently...I've swapped the mouse and moved it to another usb port.
this morning I got a bad surprise: Firefox doesn't start upon my click on its icon. Tried to uninstall and reinstall Firefox.... Even its icon disappeared from menus after reinstallation (no way to see it in the menu editor). I tried to start it from command line:
code firefox %u and got this reply from Ubuntu: GLib-WARNING **: g_set_prgname() called multiple times
I am using Chrome now but I had some useful add-ons on Firefox and wouldn't like to loose them...
When I right click on the wireless icon (the four bars, which are empty and have an X by them now). I click information about the connection, and it says "no active valid connection found" (or something like that, it's in spanish).I right clic and clic "edit connections" and it shows me five tabs: cabled, wireless, broad band, vpn, and dsl. The wireless tab is empty, there are no connections.I looked at ubuntu help, and it says to put this in terminal:Quote:sudo lshw -C networkand that it should say either "CLAIMED, UNCLAIMED, ENABLED or DISABLED"but instead it says, really fast,CPUIDPCI (sysfs)(and something else too fast to read)I put in another series of commands to the terminal to give information-- I read these on another post, that they're necessary for someone (you! I hope) to tell me what's wrong and how to fix it.
(I got these results by copying them and putting them on a USB, obviously)any ideas would be welcome!!(in non technical language if possible, I don't know much about computers, though I'm learning!)
I used to be able to open the Rhythmbox window by just clicking the Rhythmbox icon in the notification area. Now in Lucid it brings up a menu (isn't that what right click is for??) and I have to select "Show Rhythmbox", and sometimes I accidentally click on "Quit" and I have to start Rhythmbox again. It's a real PITA. Is there any way to make it the way it was before? I've looked at the Rhythmbox options and can't find anything about it. (Why do GNOME applications always have barely any options?)
I run Ubuntu 10.10, recently I got this problem. if I open more than one program, and click on icon of them on task bar to switch between them, KDE crash and restart with log in screen. now since 2-3 days this restart also happening when I ALT+TAB to switch between running programs .
Banshee will not run when I click its icon in the launcher. The little arrow appears next to it, and then nothing happens. I'm running Ubuntu 11.04. I ran it in the terminal and got this (x's inserted for username):
Code: [Info 06:10:11.264] Running Banshee 2.0.0: [Ubuntu 11.04 (linux-gnu, x86_64) @ 2011-06-28 05:39:10 UTC] [Info 06:10:12.004] Updating web proxy from GConf [Info 06:10:12.034] All services are started 0.637278
[Code]...
Another piece of information that may be relevant: this started happening immediately after I installed a GStreamer plugin, specifically the one for aac, xvid, mpeg2, and faad. I've since uninstalled this package, but Banshee still will not load.
I have a freshly installed ubuntu 9.10 but I can't connect wirelessly. When I click on the network icon, there are no wireless networks available. (Disabled?) And I've tried maybe activating it, but my Hardware Drivers come up empty. wireless adapter
It was working until a recent update. I have the icon in my system tray. Networkmanager is running. I have tried to reboot the computer and restart the network manager. All switches that could turn the network off is on. Every time I click on the icon in the system tray it tell me the networkmanager is disabled.
I recently installed KDE in my ubuntu 10.10. To access KDE, I want to use startx /usr/bin/startkdeBut using it disables sound in KDE (Sound is working fine in GNOME). It doesn't sound for anything like login sound, totem, mplayer or any other playerBut when I press Alt+Ctrl+F1 to change to virtual console, the playback resumes from where it was in time and when coming back Alt+Ctrl+F7 and the time in totem (or any other player) doesn't move. While log out also it doesn't play logout sound and doesn't logout, so I have to press Ctrl+Alt+F1 so that logout sound play then it exits. When starting KDE by kdm or gdm, the sound works normally. But I don't want to login again using kdm or gdm and not to use root user to start kdm or gdm.I don't know what is the difference between when KDE is started by startx or by kdm/gdm where the same user login in kdm/gdm as that for startx
