View 3 Replies View RelatedI have heard its going to be July. One concern is KDE4.4 and whether this is going to be the KDE default environment for 11.2. Over at KDE, 4.4 is out with a 1 click install for 11.2. The main problem I have discovered from reading the KDE forum is poor multi monitor support with separate X screens. From what I read this is extremely problematic. I would like to update to 4.4 to get the equalizer back in Amorak but attempted once, the day before they officially released 4.4 with no success. I wonder if anyone here is using 4.4 in a separate X screen setup?? Additional thought-- when 11.3 is released will 4.4 be the only option or will we be able to elect to use 3.xx??

Note: Am using ssh -i with permission file to connect the system(CentOS release 5.2 ).
I saw a reference to a way to do this while searching for help with something else but don't remember where it was now. I know it is possible to make a local repository but that seems more for someone with a home network composed entirely of Fedora machines than what I'm looking for.In Ubuntu I could just copy the contents of the /var/cache/apt/archives directory and paste the debs into the new installation to be installed once the update manager saw that there were updates. I looked through the contents of the /var/cache/yum directory but I didn't see anything that looked like it would allow me to do this in Fedora. All I want is a way to download whatever updates I need (and there are 300mbs of updates from a fresh install) one time to allow me to catchup and now be waiting hours on my slow 700k connection to download everything.
Could someone point me to an easy to follow HOWTO that would walk me through creating a service pack of the basic default applications for Fedora 13 that will need to be installed or updated on any system?
I'm looking for a method for modifying some jpg photo files last modification date with the corresponding timestamp creation date of each file. The reason is that shotwell import pictures in folders according to last modification date which is stupid on my opinion.
View 2 Replies View RelatedAs a photographer I'm constantly taking photos and storing them in folders. Now occasionally I'm using two cameras (either for different settings or an assistant is also taking photos) which means that for one event I can have differently named images. Both cameras have the same time set (which always helps in Windows) but in Ubuntu when trying to sort my folder by date taken I can't.The options I'm given are to sort them: Manually, by Name, by Size, by Type, by Modification date and by Emblem. Now none of those are helpful to me once I've done a few edits to the images. So please if anyone knows, how do you organise a folder with images taken on different cameras by Date Taken rather than Date Edited?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am using CRON to create a new, blank file, every minute, in a specific location on my web server. After web searching, and reading man pages, I get the impression that the following command is supposed to work:touch /home/mydomain/var/folder/attachments/`date +%H%M`.txtThis should give me a new file with a file name that is the current hour and minute. However, when executed, the CRON mailer reports:touch /home/mydomain/var/folder/attachments/`date +/bin/sh: -c: line 0: unexpected EOF while looking for matching /bin/sh: -c: line 1: syntax error: unexpected end of fileSo, it looks like shell is seeing the plus (+) sign as an EOFObviously, nothing get created. What would be the easiest, single line command to create an empty file, at a given location, with a time based file name

View 9 Replies View RelatedI just switched from a basic digital camera to a more advanced one that stores both Jpeg and Raw (.Nef - it's a Nikon) files for me.When importing files in Digikam, I rename the files so that they start with Date and Time. Example: 20110121-223748.JPG for a photo taken on Jan 21st 2011 at 22:37:48.I was a bit surprised when importing both the JPEG and the Raw version of the same photo, that the filename is different by a few seconds (no constant offset, sometimes they are the same):
20110121-223748.JPG
20110121-223750.NEF
I did some "research" by looking at the exif data of both files (using "exiftool 20110121-223748.JPG" from the command line). Here is what I got back
(amongst other data):20110121-223748.JPG
File Modification Date/Time : 2011:01:21 22:37:48+01:00
Modify Date : 2011:01:21 22:37:48
Date/Time Original : 2011:01:21 22:37:48
[code]....
So it seems that Digikam is using the "File Modification Date/Time" (different in the Jpeg's and Raw's of my camera) rather than the "Create Date" (the same for both Jpeg and Raw). (The few seconds difference in "File Modification Date/Time" between the two versions of the same photo is probably due to the time that my camera needs to write away the data on the SD memory card. I guess.) Is there a way to have Digikam use the Create Date? (Or the Date/Time Original?)
PS: I'm on Ubuntu 10.04LTS, using DigiKam 1.2.0
I would really like to preserve a file's original modified date and pass it back to the file as the same attribute after a script has worked on it. I get a lot of JPEG files from different places on the Net which I either turn around and upload or burn to disk, and having the "original" date of either download or last mod in a graphics app would be for me, in the long run, a lot more helpful when deciding, for instance, which files to "recycle" or pass on backing up more than once.I've tried doing this on my own every now and then. Where I run into problems is that it appears "stat" and "date" use different formats for date information, and I can't seem to puzzle out how to "translate" one to the other satisfactorily for the latter command.
Just to give an example:
stat foo.jpg |grep Modify gives me
Modify: 2010-07-12 06:28:56.890625000 -0400
Passing that string as-is to date foo.jpg, I get the errordate: unknown option -- 0 and the usual semi-courteous suggestion to Try 'date --help' for more information.Somehow my TexInfo database got screwed up somewhere along the line and info dategives me the short article on date input formats, not the full documentation for the command
When I clall the "update manager" it tells me if my system is up-to-date or new updates are available. Lets assume I update my system now (I disabled automatic updates).
Then (in a couple of days or weeks) I start the Update Manager again and it tells me again that new updates available. How can I find out now when the last time was when my system was "up-to-date" (=when a complete, successful update took place)?
Is there soemwhere an entry which shows this date?
I was wondering, is there ever more than one build of a given Ubuntu release (but with the same major/minor version)? That is, if I download X.10 a month after it comes out, and then I download it a few days before the next version is released, say, will it be bit-for-bit the same as the one I originally downloaded? Or does the Ubuntu team do new builds over time, fixing things, etc.?
View 2 Replies View RelatedHow can I do ipconfig /release /renew in Ubuntu 9.10?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have heard great stuff about 10.04 so I am going to download and install it before the release IF it's ready though. So is there anything I should know about before I do this? Any bugs or things that hasn't been fixed yet?And beta 2 is that latest one right? And the last one before the final release?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have 9.10 ubuntu installation - I have updated all packages and it is up-to-date. However, I have a issue with the latex installation, not latex so to say, it is the pstricks
Installed package :
texlive-pstricks
version - 2007.dfsg.17-2ubuntu1
Also it is the latest version available in the repo. However, this is not the
latest in pstricks. I find that version in the new 10.04 is 2009-7ubuntu3
Is there some way to get this installed in 9.10? Or I have to upgrade my whole installation?
Is there a functional equivalent to xcode for the new Lucid Lynx release of Ubuntu (10.04)? I'm just beginning to write a IPHONE app and require a proper IDE, but don't want to use mac os.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI started using Ubuntu in 2006 and it provided me with pretty much all the functionality I needed with a very intuitive interface and and organization (esp the package system.) I replaced all my windows installations with Ubuntu and never looked back.. I consider myself a somewhat computer savvy user but with each new release, I've encountered numerous problems that severely disrupt the normal functionality of a basic OS and cannot be solved in a straight-forward manner. Some example I'll list:
1) GRUB. I got a new Dell Laptop with Windows 7 and I wish to dual boot.I repartition and install Ubuntu 9.10. OK, so far so good. When Lucid came out, I upgraded. Then I reboot and I'm greeted with garbled letters instead of the usual GRUB screen. So far, I have not been able to resolved this issue other than to use the live CD to boot and/or use Supergrub to manually boot to Linux or Windows. I'm now dependent on this CD to properly boot my system EVERY TIME. I've even tried reinstalling GRUB after successfully booting using the CD but grub still refuses to return (now I'm greeted with "Missing Operating System" if I'm not booting using a CD.)
2) WiFi. The only internet access available at my apartment is WiFi. Unfortunately, wifi does not work out of the box on my system. Downloading the third-party drivers to get wifi working REQUIRES an active internet connection (lame catch-22 situation.) So I'm forced to plug into the wired ethernet connection at my workplace instead every time I need to reinstall and restore my internet connection. With so much of the world converting to WiFi, it really makes sense to have access to WiFi after installing from CD.
I don't care if I have to download a much larger CD filled with tons of useless junk; if anyone know of any sort of "expanded version" of the Ubuntu installation cd with a greater variety of WiFi drivers included so I don't have to go through this lame and convoluted procedure just to get my Wifi working every time a reinstall is necessary, I would need it ASAP!
I get this message when clicking the upgrade button in Update manager. I am attempting to upgrade from 10.10. The full message is as follows:
Could Not Download the release notes Please check your internet connection
My internet connection is fine on that machine, I just updated packages on it seconds before I saw 11.04 was available and can also browse and such
First off, want to say that there is no problem at all with Unity as such, I think it makes a great effort to get out of my way, and it's definitely a step forward as far as interfaces go. Once you've relearned where everything is it's much cleaner and easier to navigate than Gnome2. However, the latest release of Ubuntu doesn't work for me or my laptop. At all. My laptop is a HP Probook 5310m.
List of problems:
1. Closing the laptop lid makes the graphical interface freeze. I can solve this by writing "sudo service gdm restart" but then all my programs disappear.
2. Suspending makes me unable to find my 3G modem once I wake it up again.
3. Suspending makes me unable to use my ethernet card
4. Unplugging the power source makes unity crash sometimes. Happened twice when I also unplugged the NIC.
If I install a server edition and after that I install Gnome and all other ubuntu-desktop applications on that server. Will these
applications be supported through the whole server support time? In other words, what exactly does it mean that the server is supported for longer? Is the number or applications available to the server smaller than to the desktop?Or, similarly, could I build a Server-long supported desktop by hand?
I downloaded the latest release, burned a disk and successfully booted. When it comes time to choose a partition I don't have the option of replacing the old release. I can install in parallel leaving both but can't use the whole disk. Interestingly enough I CAN replace the windows installation. Of course I already have Grub installed but I don't see how this would affect installing. I read the article here [URL] and it seems I may have missed a step. However it's implied I will lose the current Grub installation. Is that the case?

(1) RESTART is hit and miss. It gets stuck and I have to do a hard shutdown (press the on/off switch for a few seconds)
(2) WIRELESS CONNECTION is hit and miss. The Connection Information goes missing. Have to shutdown & restart for it to work (restart never works)
(3) APPLICATIONS FREEZE all of a sudden. The mouse stops working and the keyboard stops working. I have to do a hard shutdown. Restart does not work.
(4) RHYTHMBOX launch is hit & miss. The little icon appears in the tray but I can do nothing - can't ask it to Show Rhythmbox and can't shut it down. Have to use System Monitor and kill the process there. IF MY MACHINE HAS NOT FROZEN DOWN COMPLETELY.
(5) GOOGLE CHROME and FIREFOX browsers run quickly when they start, and then, as time passes, run more and more slowly, until the freeze the whole computer.
The Ubuntu website doesn't include the md5 checksums for the current 10.04 matrix. The forum announcement thread also makes no mention of these checksums. That means servers could be distributing defective isos and on day one, that could mean tens of thousands of downloads could be defective. I have to say that md5sums have been a mainstay of Linux ISO distribution for a decade, this despite whatever flaws one might find in it, yet for the last few releases of U, md5sum data are the hardest data to locate on the Ubuntu website, and on release day, they are critical.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI used ubuntu since v.6 & it runs perfect with my machine Toshiba laptop SatelliteM70 I use ubuntu multi boot with XP Home individual portion , I used startupmanager to control the boot option except last v.10.4 LT it drives me crazy I upgrade from distribution 9.04 the 9.10 then troubles started I never able to burn v.9.10 into a CD or DVD always stuck with the phrase try to burn the ISO with lower speed the CD ejected with out completing of burning process then I had to make upgrade through ubuntu update .
The other problem pups up eventually with v10.04LT had upgraded from 9.10 & after full update to 9.10 & switch to 10.01LT through new upgrade available.Rebooted the System , I had the boot option when I select ubuntu it boots fine ,but ubuntu logo blinks for less than one second goes directly to terminal black screen with prompt commands no Gnome it asks me to login then password & the same user & password I used before upgrading I tried many things to have the boot selection like before but no use only through Telnet commands screen .
I was still using Ubuntu 9.04, and I decided to upgrade up to 10.04. Upgrading to Karmic was no problem but then I tried to upgrade to Lucid and I always get the message "Can't download release notes", I also cannot upgrade from the command line (is 'sudo apt-get dist-upgrade' discontinued?). I've tried several mirrors during the last couple of days but still I can't get it to work.
