Most of us know the basic security practices on Windows:
Use a limited account
Set a password
Disable unused services
Uninstall bloatware
Antivirus / Antimalware
etc.
I haven't ran linux as my main desktop computer before, so I don't know how to properly secure it. I have heard linux is supposed to be more secure than Windows, but I know that the default settings of anything are rarely secure. What are some things I should do as a new Linux user to secure my desktop system from attack?

My present system consists of 4 computers all running Ubuntu (just upgraded to 10.04) and all have a Virtual windows installations to run applications for which there are no Linux substitutes. The "server" is a NAS that is merely a file repository. I want to replace the NAS with a new computer that acts as both a server and a local workstation. It would act as a repository for common files and would run a mail, calendar, contacts server for the LAN (no outside connections). What are the pros and cons of installing the server version of Ubuntu (or Kubuntu) then adding the appropriate desktop versus installing the desktop and adding some server functions?

I'm new to KDE and am running KDE 4.7.1 on top of Arch Linux. It's fantastic however I have one problem - virtual desktops. Yeah I know there are those "activities" things which people say replace virtual desktops and I will look into them, but for the moment I want to stick with what I know.
And it's almost set up too. In fact, it is, apart from one issue: Say I'm on desktop 3 and I click on the desktop (as in - the bit with my wallpaper, etc, not the little square in my panel) - it immediately switches to desktop 1. Got no idea why I'd want it to do that and it's bugging me.

I am looking for a program with whom I can stream my desktop as webcam. I know "webcam studio" but it is not good because I am not able to move the "streaming window" like a common window... I need to write numerical values to move the window and it is very awkward. Do you know a program with whom I can do that? In windows I use "magic camera", it is very good! I tried to install with wine, but even if it works the other programs do not see the virtual webcam...

I have two monitors, my laptop screen, and an LCD monitor. I want to configure linux to put one virtual desktop on one, and a second on another. I'm using Compiz as well, so I'd like it to show one side of the cube on each monitor. I'm not really sure how to go about setting this up though. My attempts so far have stretched the same desktop across both monitors, or resulted in an unusable monitor that just sits there with the default background. While I was trying to figure this out I came across something called XRandR that lets you connect/disconnect monitors without restarting xserver. I'm not sure how to get this going either, the only tutorials I found were for intel chipsets, and I'm using the proprietary NVidia drivers.

I've never even set up a virtual desktop on Windows so I'm not sure where to start. I noticed that there's a menu in Ubuntu to set this up, but I followed the instructions (can't remember what they were off hand) and it said that the computer was only accessible through a LAN. I want to leave the Ubuntu machine (my laptop) at home and be able to access it through my desktop (Win7) in college (long story but I don't think that matters). It's possible to do this, right? How would it be done? I understand that LogMeIn doesn't work with Linux, so I'm guessing I have to use Ubuntu's default virtual desktop program and a Windows program like TightVNC, but I'm not sure how to make the laptop accessible from something other than a local network.

I'm using F14 on a netbook with a pathetically small screen, 1024x600. The resolution is so low that important dialogs, the print dialog for example, can't be displayed in their entirety. It's also not possible to drag a dialog up so that you see the bottom of the dialog.
Using a virtual desktop that's larger than the physical desktop would provide a workaround. ais there a way to set desktop size to be larger than the screen size?

In (Gnome) Ubuntu there is a keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Alt+Shift+(Up|Down|Left|Right) that allows the user to quickly move a window from one workspace to another. I've been looking for a similar way to accomplish this in (KDE) Kubuntu. I know that you can right-click on a window in the Task Manager and use "To Desktop" to move a window, but I'm just curious if the same thing can be accomplished with the keyboard.

I am unable to select an option that just shows the applications designated to a current desktop and hides the rest. After all these years, I do not even know why KDE does not have this set by default.
My system is openSUSE 11.3 64-bit with KDE 4.4.4
If it helps, I installed my system through the openSUSE 11.3 LiveCD.
The following are images of my Multiple Desktops and Pager Windows respectively.

concerning controlling the windows in virtual desktop.
a) Say to a application to be launched to virtual desktop 2 for example.
b) How can you ask from a virtual application to be only visible at one virtual desktop. For example I work on virtual desktop 6 and I want to start skype that should be on virtual desktop 2. Right now If I launch the app on virtual desktop 6 it will appear on the same one. Would it be possible to ask for an applicaiton to be launched on an other virtual desktop. If yew how?

I need to run an application on a virtual desktop (let say desktop #2) and control it via another app running on the root desktop (desktop #1). That would include screen capture and mouse movements. So basically I capture the application window from desktop #2, scrape it and then click on buttons via my app on desktop #1. Anyway you got the idea. Now my big question is: is that doable ? and if so what's the best language to do it ?

I am a novice in the world of cloud and recently managed to configure Ubuntu 9.04 Cloud (using kvm, eucalyptus and other packages) successfully at my college for my project work. The problem is that i can only manage to view the running instance using rdesktop from any remote machine. Is there any way to do this other than rdesktop/logs? Secondly, I want to develop a application on the lines of google docs as a part of my project. Is it possible to install apache server on this virtual instance, and host a website? How will the client access this website? Which frameworks would be required or do I have to develop one?

I'm using kde 3.5.10 on a Debian Lenny with xorg from backports and nvidia proprietary driver (195.36.15) on my laptop. Nowadays I have received a 2nd monitor, end my purpose is to attach it to my laptop. TwinView or separate X screen work fine but clone or extended view modes for my mind are not so usefull. I think there is the possibility to assign one virtual desktop to one monitor and another adjacent virtual desktop to the second monitor. how to obtain this kind configuration.

admit I don't know everything and right now I am at my wit's end trying to figure out this one.The system is: F13 x86_64; GNOME (compiz turned off); wine-1.1.38-1.fc13.i686 and nvidia er from RPM Fusion xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-195.36.24-1.fc13.x86_64The problem is: When I run a fullscreen app in Wine, switch virtual desktops and switch back, the fullscreen app has shrunk. This did not occur on F12 prior to upgrading to F13.The app itself seems to have not noticed it was resized; on checking its configuration panel it seems to still think it's running full screen. What I want to know is whether the problem is in Wine, the video driver, or the window manager, or somewhere else, so that I can report it to the right people (or just fix it).

I have 2 monitors. I'm using the Nvidia driver in Twinview Mode on the right side. I can move the cursor from one monitor to the next and I can drag applications between the two. I have multiple activities. And the second monitor selected one of those other activities as the background. I'm not sure how this was chosen, or if I have a choice. Anyone know? Do activities affect what is displayed in a dual monitor setting? As I toggle through the activities, the two monitors change, but never to the same one.
When I open an application, it's a guessing game which monitor it appears on. Can I control that?
I know if one clicks the top left corner of an application they can send it "To Desktop" ("all", "Desktop 1", "Desktop 2", etc). If I could assign "Desktop 1" to monitor 1, and "Desktop 2" to monitor 2, I could then use the "To Desktop".
At a minimum, how does one control where applications open in a dual monitor setting?

OS Linux Mint 10, Intel graphics, SIS usb2vga adaptor.
I have three screens. The netbook screen with the extended desktop onto a vga screen and a third screen connected to a usb2vga adaptor.
The extended desktop screens without the usb2vga adaptor works perfectly. I can maximise applications to either screen perfectly without them spreading across both screens. As soon as I connect the third screen via the usb2vga adaptor maximising an application causes it to spread across both screens yet the third usb2vga screen has it's own virtual desktop environment.
I have tried numerous versions of my xorg.conf file that I have generated to incorporate the usb2vga adaptor to make this work and regardless of what xrandr commands I send including changes to the gconf settings nothing seems to solve the issue.
It seems odd that I can create a panel and position it left, right, top or bottom of the second monitor of the extended desktop and it sticks to the screen dimensions yet I can't get any application to do the same when there is a third screen connected through the usb2vga adaptor.
I don't use Compiz, it crashes my system and I don't want separate workspaces I want the extended desktop with the two separate virtual screens to fit on the two separate screens that form part of the extended desktop.
With Xinerama deprecated what other options do I have.

I tried changing the resolutions, and it does not make a difference. I tried rebooting and the display is still bad.
