Jun 25, 2011I'm trying to use xubuntu as my home server. I have two 2TB hard drives and I'm trying to get access the second one. How would I go about doing so?

Ubuntu :: Xubuntu 10.10 Error When Booting Into Xfce From Work To Home
Dec 2, 2010I just installed a fresh copy of Xubuntu 10.10 on a penstick and everything was working fine at work and at home. Now when I got to the work this morning I connected the stick to my office network and I got this error:

Why did this error present itself if nothing was changed? All that was done was that is was tested at work and at home.

I have a Dell Mini 9, a netbook that uses a wireless-g card requiring bcmwl-kernel-source to work.What I would like to do is use either the alternate CD or mini.iso minimal install file to perform a command line install-style installation of the system.So far, what I am thinking (from reading this [url].... article:

My opening questions are: Should I go with mini.iso or the Xubuntu Alternate Install CD (or the Ubuntu one)? If so, which one? What additional packages will I need to make the hardware accessible and fully functional? All I can think of so far would be sound (I'd like to stay away from PulseAudio if possible, it wreaks havoc with my computer), my webcam, and the memory card slot, if additional packages are needed for it?What other "core" packages should I include in this list? Should I include Synaptic, or other packages, and why?What do I need to take into consideration, since this is both a directly- and battery-powered computer?

General :: Can't Boot To Xubuntu And Can't Uninstall Xubuntu
Nov 17, 2010i installed Xubuntu on my system having a dual boot with Xubuntu and windows xp but when i select to boot on Xubuntu it freezes and gets a message saying that the file hal.dll in system32 cant be found. Before showing me this message i tryed to uninstall the Xubuntu inside from windows xp because several problems showed up after installing Xubuntu. I can boot on windows xp but i cant boot to xubuntu and cant uninstall xubuntu.

Aug 10, 2010I managed to install xubuntu-restriced-extras on my Ubuntu 10.04 server (which btw is headless and no X installed at all) Anyways, i tried to remove it with apt-get remove, but in only deleted a couple of Kb. tried with --purge, autoremove, autoclean, clean and everything else i could think of, but my poor server is still bloated with stuff like adobe-plugins and stuff i dont need.
How can i propely remove the entire package? I could also remove the package piece by piece (since its just a dummy package, no?), but I tried to search the internet for such information, but to no avail. Where to look, what to do?(btw, this happended because i was installing the package on my xubuntu laptop, but forgot i was SSH'ing to my server

Nov 14, 2010I am trying to connect to my samba server with xubuntu, so far with no luck.
I am trying to use fusesmb and have been following these instructions:

the top ones say to use Applications - System - shared folders to setup smb client. Xubuntu maverick doesn't seem to have that menu point. So I copied the smb.conf from my desktop machine. libsmbclient is installed.
fuse as such seems to run since teh folder that i designated as mount point (~/Network) changes owner to root when i run fusesmb Network. But apart from that nothing happens.

Feb 19, 2011I was wondering if it would be secure to add xubuntu-desktop to my server and then open RDP so my colleuges can jump in and out as they need to. Would it bring any major security risks to my server to do this?I have heard there are ways to put a chroot around an RDP session, so it is like logging into a virtual machine, how would I go about that?

Webmin - Check, ftps-fileZilla - Check, Apache -It Works BUT I cant seam to set up Apache as a named server using Bind DSN. Tried most of the help in the fourms and ..... I think my problems is in the master server selection, do i have to use [URL]... or can i just use myservername. I have tryed both with no luck. First time with the server addition.

Feb 26, 2010I've been having strange problems with my server/media center setup lately: The movie just stops in XBMC, as if it had reached the end, randomly, some times only once in a movie, sometimes every 5 min. Then, I have to rewind all the way to where I was to resume the movie.
I'll explain my setup:
Server with Ubuntu Server 8.04 with samba/lighttpd/proftpd/etc. which contains all the media (192.168.0.104)
-10meters cable->
dlink di-634 router (192.168.0.1) -> internet
-30meters cable->
dlink di-624+ router (192.168.10.1)
-10meters cable->
Media PC which runs Xubuntu 8.10 (due to massive slowdown with the integrated intel gpu in 9.04) running XBMC 9.04. (192.168.10.102)
I use samba to serve the videos to the media center. I have considered putting them all into the hdd of the media center, but then I would have to put more HD's into it, and that would cause cooling issues due to the case being very small. Having a server has proven quite useful too. The movies I'm watching are in 480p or smaller resolution. First, my routers were in opposite positions. But the di-624+ couldn't take all the traffic going through it anymore after a couple of additional laptops were added to the network, and started rebooting frequently. I thought this was the reason for the stopping, so I decided to switch places (the DI-634 is more stable and also has much better wireless range, being newer and having dual antennas). After doing this, the same thing still happens, and looking at the routers' logs, they don't say anything about rebooting (also I was connected to IRC all the time, no disconnects there either).
Then, I figured my server was running out of RAM or something similiar, but I ruled that out after checking it (it only uses about 10% RAM, processor loads stay at about 1 all the time. I probably forgot to mention this, but this setup used to work 100% before. I haven't changed anything, besides updating both machines with apt-get update & upgrade.

Dec 2, 2010I have both windows (xp and win7) and mac (osx snow leopard) running on my network. I'd like to find a unified system that I could use as a file server. Mainly, I'd like to have it hold music and movies, maybe run some automated backups from a win 7 desktop. I'd also like it to be a print server. I'd like to run the most simple and lightest weight OS for the server os. However, I don't think I have the basic linux knowledge to run Ubuntu Server as it is terminal based. I have installed it on my machine but I feel like im running in circles. I have it installed and can SSH in with my laptop no problem. I feel like I may be better off installing Ubuntu Desktop and removing what I dont need. at htis time the server has only a 40gig hdd in it, i also have a 500gb hdd i'd be using for the files.

CentOS 5 Server :: Vsftpd - Working With NFS Server As Home Directory

I installed vsftpd server in one of my servers using "yum install vsftpd" command. NFS server is running in the other server and mounted as "/data" in this FTP server. root in FTP server has also root authority in NFS server. All the files and sub-folders under "/data" in FTP server have 755 or 766 mode. Even I modified vsftpd setting to allow root login.
When I login as root to FTP server with FileZilla client, I can see all the file list in root home directory and move to /data directory. I can download any file in a local HDD but I can not download any file in /data directory.

Mar 28, 2010Currently I use FreeNAS, which is a FreeBSD-based NAS distribution for my home server. However, I would like to move to a Linux-based home server with the ability for new software packages to be installed, which is a problem with FreeNAS. I use Lucid beta on my Dell Mini 10v, and have two Windows 7 and one Windows XP desktop(s), with all of them connected via Gigabit ethernet and Wifi N.
The home server would act as a file server (SMB and whatever the best one is for my Ubuntu netbook), a media server (UPnP, MT-DAAPD/iTunes and DLNA for my PS3), as a webserver and as a VirtualBox server just to experiment with. The server itself has a 160GB PATA drive which will be for the OS, and a 1TB SATA drive to be for the data; Gigabit ethernet; an AMD Athlon 64 2.2GHz (with AMD-V) and 1GB RAM.Are there any things you would recommend for me to install? I think that having a window manager would be nice, even if just for initial setup since I am not very experienced with command-line Linux. I'm planning on installing Webmin and a VNC/SSH server so I can configure it remotely. I don't need any firewall or VPN services as these will be provided by a pfSense box separate from this.
Server :: Backup Live System - Home Server
Sep 11, 2009I'd like to know what solutions do you, people, use to backup a live system that acts as a small home mail/file/irc/web server and some other purposes. For example, right now, to backup the mail, I have to stop fetchmail, kill vixie-cron to avoid any problem and then do the backup. Then restart vixie-cron.I wonder if there's any solution that will leave me do the backup without all this hassle.

Jan 27, 2011I am looking to probably make a home server act as a backup for most of my data but also as a media server. I want to host all my music and videos for the most part on the server and then regardless what computer I'm using I could listen or watch. (Another question would be could I have itunes find my music on the server and play it).
But anyway, from people with home media servers, what kind of bandwidth usage do you go through a month? Comcast (ISP) limits me to 250GB and I'm thinking this is enough for moderate usage, I just want to make sure before I start the project.
