View 1 Replies View RelatedAsterisk and its cousin technologies intrigue as well as confuse me. I'm wondering: Is it possible to set up an Asterisk (or other) server on a home computer with no special hardware and use it to route calls between mobile devices in remote locations? I'm hoping this could work similarly to Skype Mobile, Google Voice, etc., except on a WAY smaller scale. This is just something I'd use personally for calls to family and friends--nothing huge.
Since my computer is just a regular laptop with no 3G connectivity, I don't expect to use 3G for calls. I just think it would be cool, for instance, to go to a caf with WiFi and use a SIP/VoIP client on my Android phone to call up a friend who also has a phone or PC with a SIP/VoIP client on it. I realize I could do the same thing far more easily with an account at Skype or some other provider. My interest in attempting this project is more for the learning experience than practical use.
If indeed this is possible to do with the hardware I already own, any tips for starting out? My computer is a MacBook Pro 5,5 (dual-booting Sabayon Linux and Mac OS X). I know I could install Asterisk from within Sabayon, install a specialized telephony distro to a new partition, or run a virtual Asterisk machine--but I'm not sure which option, if any, would be most appropriate here. I'm also not sure if Asterisk would accomplish what I want, or if I should look at other software.
I'm trying to build a cups server (with cups-pdf) and it's not printing (creating) the PDF output. from cups-pdf log:
Code:
[ERROR] failed to create directory (/home/testuser/PDF)
[ERROR] failed to create user output directory (/home/testuser/PDF)
the lp command is being ran from SSH as "testuser", who is in the lpadmin group (as well as sysadmin, users, and about 5 other groups while troubleshooting this) I've tried creating the PDF folder as both the user, and as root but still no output file (when the folder is created the first error goes away, but the user output error remains) *note, the /home directory is a symbolic link to a separate partion (/storage) I'm still a bit green on linux, but the server is headless, and for now i'm just trying to get normal users able to print using cups-pdf
here's my cupsd.conf
Code:

# Sample configuration file for the CUPS scheduler. See "man cupsd.conf" for a

I'm new to send mail. I have a server with a public address and domain name. But I only want to implement a small sendmail network on our 20-user LAN. Can I turn my public server into a sendmail server? Are there any simple step-by-step instructions for this?

- Tried generating rsa (as well as dsa) keys on the linux server and put the generated public key in the ~/.ssh/authorized_keys. Then I converted the private key using PuttyGen.
- Also, tried generating keys using PuttyGen and then converted the public key and placed it on the server
- Configured the sshd server (ssh_config) for using RSAAuthentication=yes. Tried all combinations and purmutations; however, I still get the "Server refused our key" error.

Is it possible to provide remote Windows users access to a LAN via the Internet when the LAN itself is connected to the Internet via a SOHO router that is assigned an IP address dynamically? An LQ thread from 2004 includes a suggestion to use VPN and DynDNS.com. Is that still a good solution? Are there any security issues?
Assuming:VPN is a good choice. DynDNS.com or similar can be used to give remote clients the public IP address of the SOHO router. the SOHO router is configured to forward VPN traffic to a Linux system acting as the VPN gateway. then, for a LAN of ~20 IP nodes and less than 5 simultaneous remote clients, are there any other VPN server software solutions to consider other than OpenVPN, Openswan and strongswan?
I have the opportunity to set up our local public library with a linux server. The primary need is for the server to land wifi users to a hotspot splash screen where they will accept terms of use and indicate what town they are from by checking a box or selecting from a dropdown menu. Users of terminals in the library would also have to indicate what town they are from. Things such as content filtering may come later. What distro would be recommended for this? Ease of use and configuration is important. They basically want to track use of the internet.

I use sendmail as the MTA for our company. Lately employees have started working from home. These home users send their email through our company MTA using SASL-AUTH. This works fine for the most part but lately we've seen problems with this. The SORBS blacklist looks not only at the IP address of our company's MTA but also at the IP address of our employees home computers. (After all, the home computer IP address is revealed in the mail header.)
SORBS has been rejecting emails sent from our home users because their dynamic IP address is present in the email headers. This is true despite their email passing through our company MTA which is on a properly forward and reverse mapped static IP. The company MTA is not listed in SORBS but the mere presence of a dynamic IP somewhere in the mail header is causing outright rejection. This seems bizarre to me considering home workers sending through a company relay is a common and reasonable business practice.
Can sendmail offer a solution here? For example, to change headers to obscure the IP address of the MUA or make the email appear to have originated directly on the MTA? I don't want to mess with internet RFC but frankly I'm out of ideas for how to get the mail delivered.
I bought a web hosting account(cPanel) and I want to create my own name server(ns1 and ns2.mydomain.com). So when I want to host addon domain, I can point them to my name server instead of hosting company name server.

i want to set up an email server both to receive and send emails. I also am on a dynamic ip scheme with my ISP. I do have a dynamic dns account with no-ip.org the Questions are:
-will somebody be able to send emails to me at the <user>@<dyndns_name>.no-ip.org email address?
-will I be able to send emails from the <user>@<dyndns_name>.no-ip.org email address?
I know i'll be able to login to accounts like gmail and yahoo and download emails from there.. but even that i don't know - even macroscopically how its done:
-is it the sendmail deamon that accepts the mail from <me>@gmail.com, <me>@yahoo.com, <me>@<dyndns_name>.no-ip.org?
-is it the sendmail deamon that does the sending of email (as well)?
-can it push emails that I want to send as <me>@gmail.com to the gmail smtp servers (and they in turn will push my email even further)?
-can it push emails from <me>@<dyndns_name>.no-ip.org to receipients?
and finally,
-WILL receiving pop/imap servers allow incoming email from my server? or due to the dynamic ip they'll assume I'm a spam server?
got a VPS and for testing purposes a homeserver with apache running. what two tools would i need to redirect my static ip to my dynamic one?
the traffic shall all go through the dynamic one. i've got a domain name registered with the VPS also. nameservers are configured.
is there any setup required on my local (dynamic ip) apache settings for using the name? and if i stop the service, will it still work? do i have to setup a webserver on the VPS for it? none running yet.

I have one server at home, connected through a router that gives me a static IP:192.168.1.2 - My PC192.168.1.3 - CentOS serverI enabled the port 80 into router forwarding system and I can connect properly to CentOS server, using the IP my internet provider gives me. My router automatically forwards a changed IP to my dyndns.com account so I can also access the server through a domain name (I pay to have it linked to one of my domains). My next step is to configure the mail server (dovecot) , so I can send emails from my local server(192.168.1.3).I was wondering if anyone has any tutorial links or tips to have the mail server configured through a home internet provider + home router.
