Nov 11, 2010I am wondering how you can change the view of the classic GNOME menu (Applications | Places | System) in 11.3 to the "classic" view (like in Fedora)? The Applications menu has to much sub-menus. I prefer it flat. The nautilus bookmarks are not directly accessible in Places either, which is not really comfortable.

May 26, 2011I installed ubuntu 11.04 on my laptop and everything worked just fine. When I helped a friend to install it on his laptop unity did not work, only ubuntu classic. On the login screen I choose "ubuntu" and when I log in I get "ubuntu classic" I went back to the login screen and chose "ubuntu classic" and it did the same thing so my question is:
where did unity go?
has anyone else had this issue, I have installed the recommended nvidia drivers and I still don't see unity, I don't know what to do next!

May 2, 2011Is there any way when booting the LiveCD of Ubuntu 11.04 to force the use of classic mode, even if the computer meets the requirements to use Unity and would otherwise start Unity? Is there a kernel parameter that would do this? In searching, all I can find is the selection during login, but this seems to only show up after a full installation, I want to do this in the Live CD environment.

May 5, 2011I recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 and all was working ok till today. I am not sure if it was because of a new update(manager)or maybe another reason, but i get a purple screen and a unresponsive window from a alarm clock app and thats it. This occures when I login onto Classic Ubuntu and Safe mode, the main Ubuntu (Unity) is working fine.
I did use Ubuntu Classic since install and was running fine. Now the screen is purple and cant even shut of the PC with the powerbutton. I can still get into terminal using CTRL+ALT+F1 and that about it... I had Dock installed,task bar... all is gone, even the background picture changed.

May 2, 2011As Unity have too much serious regressions to be usable desktop (I'll list some so maybe somebody could get an idea what to change for Ocelot 1110 edition):desktop switcher is obnoxious for somebody who is used to having 8-12 virtual desktops and to see in system tray what desktop is taken and what desktop is free. I do not see Pidgin icon in system tray anymore. And I hate (not dislike, but hate) Empathy, so I do not want to hear "Install Empathy". Have empathy for users who just want their apps in system tray! Launcher is bugged. I added Synaptic to it, place in launcher was taken, but there was no icon until restart. I added dconf-editor, there was no icon for it also after restart. weather applet is no more part of date/time tray indicator, but you can install it separately. Yes, you can install it separately, but you can not add your location, and that applet is not smart enough to read your old settings of weather and 1-5 locations for time zones should I go further? In short, 1104 is stable but default login (Unity) is not functional. It is better than M$ Vista which was not stable, but I expected that Ubuntu would adhere to higher standards than one shitty commercial company which wants only money of users and therefore rushed non-functional software to market.
My question (finally): In Ubuntu classic items I added to right click menu using nautilus-actions are not there anymore. They are still present in Nautilus, but not in desktop right-click menu. I googled a bit and found zilch, so I ask here. Please share how to do it (scripts folder is still there, but that would be regression to be unable to edit right click menu, FFS Ubuntu is not proprietary software so we would be helpless and could not tweak our favorite OS how we like it).

May 25, 2011I upgraded to Natty at the beginning of May and Unity has been working fine until about 4 days ago. Around then, then I cold boot and log in, Ubuntu starts in "Ubuntu Classic" desktop. If I log out then back in, Unity starts as expected.In both cases of my logging in, Ubuntu Classic is not selected - Ubuntu is, which should start the UI under Unity.

Apr 29, 2011I've installed this new Ubuntu 11.04 and I must say its horrible. Not because of the "Unity", but lack of support for multiple monitors. They work in "Gnome Classic", but the problem is there is many bugs. First bug is that any windows I open do not have borders or title bars, and only open in top left corner of the screen. On top of that, I can't type anything in those opened screens like when I open terminal for example. Second bug is that I can't add any new items to panels on other separate screens. As soon as I try to add anything, I get the following errors. "Indicator Applet Complete" has quit unexpectedly. So 11.04 failed for me I'm afraid. At this point I can't use it. This is very said because I was looking forward in running new version of Ubuntu. Its very strange that Ubuntu programmers don't have multiple screens by now to test ubuntu properly. As for Unity, nothing to talk about there. Its pure "Vista" style like screw up. It only works well on laptop or single monitor. I guess all I can do now, is wait again for 11.10 and hope all bugs will be fixed by then to support multiple monitors like 10.10 does now. Also, this will teach me installing new ubuntu version every six months LOL With all the bugs new ubuntu version comes out .04 releases is not worth it. Better wait at least in till .04.1 comes or even .10 versions. fix "Gnome Classic" so it will support multiple screens again. I think its something to do with Compiz, because windows decorations is not working on separate screens.

Jul 7, 2011Ever since I upgraded to Natty / 11.04, the quality of my desktop experience has dropped sharply.
One thing that effect me greatly is that I can no longer conveniently switch my network proxy on or off system-wide with single click.
Back in Maverick / 10.10, I could launch gnome-network-properties and switch it back and forth depends rather I am at work or at home.
I have found a similar application, "gnome-control-center network," on the surface of it, it seems to replace "gnome-network-properties" in Maverick. Except that this application doesn't seems do ANYTHING.
As result, I am having the hardest time switching my proxy settings, as I have to do so per application basis (gpodder, pidgin, aptitude, thunderbird / firefox, etc).
ps. I am using Gnome "classic" but Gnome 3 suffers the same issue
Ubuntu :: 10.04.GNOME (Classic) Why Does Some Terminal Window Background Appear Differently
May 22, 2011Why does on some computers my terminal window have a background I can see through and on others its a solid color? I have Ubuntu 10.04 installed on 4 machines as base OS and I have many virtual machines of it also. I havent changed the terminal preferences on any of them, however on some computers the terminal background which is purple is not solid in that you can see what is in the background behind it. On others the background is truly solid purple; you can not see behind/through it.
Is there any way to change the terminal window for these machines that are displaying solid to the 'see-thru' way? Ive been using some ebooks and things and really like opening up vi/vim in the purple see-thru window that allows me to write and see the text in the background...however on some machines I can not do this because the terminal display is truly solid. ? All my computers have the same profile settings for terminal..

Note - I am making a distinction here between what I call see-thru and the 'transparent' setting in the terminal preferences as this seems to use the desktop background and is different from what I am talking here.
Ubuntu :: Desktop Cube In Gnome Classic Terribly Slow
May 30, 2011today i decided i wanted to use the desktop cube again, so i went through all the compiz settings and got it working in gnome classic. however, when i initiate ratation with the mouse (ctrl>alt>button 1) it is sloooow whenever there is a window open (even just one). rotating away from the workspace with a window does seem to speed up the framerate. when i had maverick 10.10 it was never this slow.
