This will no doubt be my fault, having messed with the compiz settings Classic is now the same as Unity. I've tried hard to like Unity, but it's very buggy and I'd like to stop trying! How I can get gnome back again as it was?

I installed ubuntu 11.04 on my laptop and everything worked just fine. When I helped a friend to install it on his laptop unity did not work, only ubuntu classic. On the login screen I choose "ubuntu" and when I log in I get "ubuntu classic" I went back to the login screen and chose "ubuntu classic" and it did the same thing so my question is:
where did unity go?
has anyone else had this issue, I have installed the recommended nvidia drivers and I still don't see unity, I don't know what to do next!

Is there any way when booting the LiveCD of Ubuntu 11.04 to force the use of classic mode, even if the computer meets the requirements to use Unity and would otherwise start Unity? Is there a kernel parameter that would do this? In searching, all I can find is the selection during login, but this seems to only show up after a full installation, I want to do this in the Live CD environment.

I am not sure if it was because of a new update(manager)or maybe another reason, but i get a purple screen and a unresponsive window from a alarm clock app and thats it. This occures when I login onto Classic Ubuntu and Safe mode, the main Ubuntu (Unity) is working fine.
I did use Ubuntu Classic since install and was running fine. Now the screen is purple and cant even shut of the PC with the powerbutton. I can still get into terminal using CTRL+ALT+F1 and that about it... I had Dock installed,task bar... all is gone, even the background picture changed.
I upgraded to Natty at the beginning of May and Unity has been working fine until about 4 days ago. Around then, then I cold boot and log in, Ubuntu starts in "Ubuntu Classic" desktop. If I log out then back in, Unity starts as expected.In both cases of my logging in, Ubuntu Classic is not selected - Ubuntu is, which should start the UI under Unity.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI like 11.04 with Unity however I would like to find a method of managing workspaces with mouse (not keyboard) which gives constant visual feedback and is faster than using the launcher bar, which although not 'slow', takes time to appear and it then takes time to locate the (non movable) desktop switcher item.I happily adopt most of what 11.04 (Unity) offers, however, I really still miss the good visual feedback and the single click action that the lower panel (classic) desktop switcher used. Is there a way of me using some item in unity which is closely similar?

I tried to change it but it didn't work. Then i as i only saw one option i reinstalled ubuntu then it worked again and have since.
View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter installing 11.04 and settling on Ubuntu Classic, I used Synaptic Package Manager to add Glipper, my long-favorite clipboard manager. After some difficulty, I discovered that in 11.04, Glipper is activated by opening the Terminal and issuing the CLI "glipper". This initiates several steps in the Terminal, which for me always failed to conclude. However, after giving up, exiting the Terminal, and doing a number of other things, I had occasion to restart. Following the restart, the Glipper icon was in the panel, and Glipper was working just fine.
FWIW, the difficulties I mentioned above included making several tries at installing ClipIt. In every case, any attempt on my part to actually use ClipIt resulted in a complete freeze. I could recover from these freezes only by cutting off the power to my desktop and then re-powering and re-booting. (Needless to say, ClipIt is no longer installed on my desktop.)
I installed a fresh live CD version of Fedora 15 which has that new Unity desktop, but I also want the option of booting to the old gnome classic desktop session. So can I add that with the package manager, or just use terminal with yum install ?

I have installed 11.04 (upgrade from 10.04 Ubuntu from EasyPeasy) and when I login and select the "Ubuntu Classic" display I get just a blank screen with the Theme picture - no program icons. I have moved the cursor all around the screen, including all sides, and nothing appears. Hardware is AcerAspireOne, 8GB, no hard disc use this computer to try different operating systems, and I have found the Unity screen very awkward compared to the EasyPeasy screen (which I believe was based on the Ubuntu Mobile Remix).
View 2 Replies View RelatedJust moved to Ubuntu 11.04 with unity and only have one problem...For most of my desktop needs I prefer to have the Unity Launcher up all the time (fullscreen apps don't cover it), and have set this option with ccsm.
However, when I watch mythtv, it is also under the launcher (and the top panel as well). How can I force mythtv to cover the launcher?
What I really need is a keyboard shortcut to hide the launcher, but the only shortcut is for "show launcher". (I guess the devs assumed everyone would want it hidden by default).
This, by the way is not my usual way for viewing mythtv. I have a projector attached to the desktop PC and it doesn't get a Unity Launcher by default (in Twinview), so no probs. However, occasionally I want to watch something on my computer screen, and that is when this issue arises.
I upgraded to 11.04, but the updgrade crashed, and now it has some errors with Unity crashing every time I open a terminal. Is there any way to re-install without having to reconfigure all my programs? I am running a dual-boot.

could someone tell me how to add more workspaces in Unity?
I have just upgraded to ubuntu 11.04 (from 10.10), any unity is not working. 'Ubuntu Classic' works fine (i'm on it now) but on 'Ubuntu', my background loads, but the icons and windows just flicker periodically (within a couple of seconds.
I realise 11.04 is only just out, but is this a known problem? and is there a fix? code...
So I upgraded, but it says something like my system "doesn't have the resources to run Unity". Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4 GHz, 6 GB, 1 TB HD, nVidia 9500 GT. So it's not a gaming video card, but not that primitive...??? And I can't even find the Gnome menu item to force it to launch Unity...

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a Fujitsu Stylistic st6012 tablet with a wacom digitizer built in. With UNE 10.04 the stylus was working fine, the buttons/rocker did left and right clicks.After upgrading to 10.10 the stylus was still working, but the buttons were not.I could click by tapping with the stylus, but to access menus in applications, or even shutdown menu, I have to keep pressing the stylus against the tablet. If I just tap, the menu will appear for a brief millisecond and then disappear again. Like what happens when you double-click with a mouse.
After some searching I have managed to get the stylus buttons to work - setting button closest to the tip as leftclick and the other as rightclick.The clicking works as expected inside applications, and when the applications menu-bar is on a line of its own - not on the same line as close, minimise, maximise, tray-icons, shutdown... In applications where the menu is moved up on the same line as close/minimise/maximise.the clicking must be done by click-hold - if I click-release the menu would go away.So that is problem number 1. Not sure if it is Maximus that is creating the top panel?
Next, the even bigger problem:The leftside icons menu introduced with UNE 10.10 is not behaving well with my stylus.Sometimes the very first tap/click on an icon launches that application. Subsequent taps/clicks on ANY icon does nothing. Only nudges the icon,scrolls the bar slightly or nothing at all.Other times not even the first tap/click launches anything. This makes the OS and my tablet utterly useless After getting the stylus buttons to work, rightclicks actually works on the icon-bar (unity?), bringing up the menu with name and Remove from Launcher options. But it does not respond to taps or leftclicks - other than making the rightclick-menu disappear.NOTE: the icons-bar and menus work as they should using an external mouse, so the problem must be related to the wacom stylus.

I made the big mistake of installing the preview version of the new Unity desktop that will be part of 11.04.I now have a computer that runs like a dog and it is near impossible to do anything. I have tried to find anything on how to reverse back to the standard Gnome desktop, but all I can find is instructions on how to install it.
View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen the live CD is booted up, there is a notice saying Ubuntu is sorry, as there is no 3D support in the laptop. If the Live CD doesn't see the video card etc, then there is a problem. The laptop has NVidia Geforce 310M, meaning it has the 3D support, only Ubuntu doesn't see it on live boot, so what the use of the Unity desktop? The Gnome starts up.
I have seen Gnome, but I'd like to see Unity. How can I do it? I can of course download the NVidia driver. But to activate the driver, I have to restart the laptop, then the Live session would go away. By the way, if Linux to be everybody's OS, I think the "restricted" drivers should be included, as they are allowed by the owners to be downloaded!
today i upgraded to natty and it went well (except for mistake of not removing ati driver before upgrading what caused 2 hours of me fixing..).. now i have weird problem - there no unity. my desktop looks the same as before - docky and 1 gnome panel, no matter what session i choose (unity or classic).. this is good news for unity haters, but i did upgrade because i wanted unity.i guess i have to run something to set defaults on system...

View 9 Replies View RelatedAfter upgrading to Ubuntu 11.04, I am told that the hardware is not compatible with Unity, therefore the system boots immediately into a normal, compiz-less OS. I managed to install CompizConfig Settings Manager but after I chose "Wobbly Windows" it still won't show any sings that it's using compiz.

Well, there's no "Visual Effects" tab. How to move on? I'd like to understand why I'm not even offered the chance to choose between Unity and Ubuntu Classic. Also, what happened to all the Visual Effects? How do I enable them?
I don't want to use more than one workspace. On previous versions of Ubuntu, I was able to reduce the number of workspaces to 1 and and remove the workspace switcher from the panel. I want to do this in Unity and can't find a way to. Right clicking doesn't let me remove from the launcher and I can find no way to reduce the workspaces.

View 3 Replies View RelatedUpgraded yesterday from 10.10 to 11.04, UNITY issues with the PC. The "Ubuntu Classic" option at login works fine.
The symptoms when attempting to use UNITY are:
1) after login, I see desktop background image
2) mouse works, context menu I can pull up has "Create Folder", "Create Launcher" ...etc
3) keyboard works, ie, CTL-ALT-T brings up terminal, I can type away
4) desktop shows no toolbars, no menubars, no dash, nothing UNITY related
Running unity_support_test (output below) reveals it is a PASS for UNITY support:
