Ubuntu :: Use Full Install As A PXE Boot Server For Other Computers?
Aug 6, 2011
I want to use my full Ubuntu install as a PXE boot server for other computers. The aim is to get the client computers into a basic Linux/Ubuntu shell with access to various util commands such as sfdisk, fdisk, ntfsclone and probably a few others (sshfs comes to mind as I type this)
The client computers do not need Xwindows of any sort. Just shell and preferably boot as fast a possible without user intervention until a command prompt. I have seen guides on setting up Ubuntu as a PXE server, but not sure;
a) what variant of Ubuntu/Linux is best for the clients
b) how to make the pxe server, serve up whatever variant is suggested in (a).

I did a port scan on my server from outside my network and saw that port 10080 AMANDA is open.Amanda isn't installed on any of my computers or my server and the port is not forwarded by my modem or router. So why is this port open and how can I close it?

I have Suse 11.3 KDE dual boot with Win 7. There is a Desktop Folder on the main screen, with one icon named "My Computer". when I click this icon, Konqueror opens a window with detailed information of the System along with Disk Information (detailed partitions of Windows 7). Once I select any one of these partitions, it opens the one said partition.
One thing I have noticed, if I "Right Click" a folder in this Win 7 partition, there is an option of opening that folder with Dolphin Super user Mode. After using this, I can edit the contained subfolders or files.On the other hand if there is a file (i.e. outside a folder), there is no option of Super user Mode and I cannot edit these files. at times I have to rename them or delete them. But for doing so I have to restart computer and go into Windows (which I don't like)is there any way of having a full control of Suse and Windows (permanently). I read the thread mentioned here: FSTAB - Editing Manually

but I wantto set up a new system with openSUSE 11.3 The system should be fully encrypted. I want to use the best possible encryption.1 I am not sure, AES 256 xts-plain is the most secure single algorithm, isn't it?2 Is it possible to use a cipher? 3 Which algorithm does the yast-installer use when I encrypt the whole system with a logical volume group?I have read this two articles:a) Encrypted Root File System - openSUSEb) openSUSE Lizards encrypted root file system on LVMBut I have to say that these routines are a little bit complicated in my eyes.Isnt there a easier way to encrypt the whole OS?I know there is a 64bit live cd available. 4 So the first description (a) is obsolete?5 How can I set up a (fully encrypted) system without using LVM?The hard disk layout should be done in this way:
/boot sda1
/enhanced partition sda2
/swap sda5

I have a LAN of about 70 computers that I would like to share media files between. I have gotten to the point with Samba that I can view the files without a username/password from client PC's. I would like to make all the folders read only except for one which will be writable for everyone. The thing that I am having a hard time with is allowing a couple of administrators (on Windows 7 machines) read/write access for all files/folders. I am completely new to Ubuntu and Samba so please make explanations thorough. Here is /etc/samba/smb.conf file:

I've recently tried to do a full install to a USB stick using a 10.04 cd.
2 things happen as I boot:
1. if Hdds are attached, boot hangs on "checking dmi pool data..."
2. if hdds not attached, "hdd error" scrolls across screen
boots normally w/o the usb stick. I've set up my partitions on usb stick as
1: fat32 2gb <<windows/storage
2: fat32 1.5gb << future persistent install
3: ext4 4gb << hoped-for full install
1 is the first partition so windows finds it nicely. Before install, i unplugged my hdds so that grub wouldn't get confused. I told the installer to put the full install on sda3 with no swap space. I checked (advanced button on summary page) that bootloader is being installed to the usb on dev/sda (sda since no other drives attached). This should put it in the MBR (i think?)
Seems like I pressed all the right buttons huh? Is there a way to diagnose grub and see what's wrong? is there a reason grub may not initialize properly from a usb drive?

Alright so i'm sure it's been talking about millions of times, but im fresh with linux so im hoping to get a good answer to what im thinking.so to start the question is can i link a laptop to a desktop? reason is the laptop is decent enough to power a system, over 1ghz, 512ram, 40gb HDD..desktop is like..P3 500mhz 256 ram uhm i believe larger than 40gb.i also have two externals i currently use for my everyday laptop. 250GB fat32, 1TB NTFS.i would be willing to give one up for the server obviously to hold music ~90GB and obviously growing. preferably just the 250.It would mostly be shared with my own laptop which runs Ubuntu11.04/Win7. PS3 also if possible, not necessary.I'm thinking of putting Debian on the old system, i put it on the laptop so far, runs very nice. but it truely has nothing, and i didn't really select anything on install because i hit the enter button for the check boxes of servers by accident lol.
It would be setup via ethernet to my home modem (bell wireless modem).I would be willing to use one or the other as the server, i dont have to like the laptop and desktop together. the desktop simply has my 7.1 soundcard so im trying to keep it in the mix. i suppose i could put them together at the modem to ethernet them in.not sure what else i should describe! hopefully that gives it a good kickstart and some brilliant answers!

I am setting up my home network. Currently, I have one computer (Munchen) which I have set in my router to receive SSH requests. This works just fine; I can SSH into that box from anywhere. I just put together a new computer, which I want to be a file repository, my ftp server, my http server, etc. What I would like is to be able to SSH into that machine from anywhere, then SSH into the other computers on that network from there.
Here is where I really don't understand the concept of what is going on. I can SSH past the router into one computer just fine either from anywhere (that makes sense to me). I can SSH from my new computer (Chemnitz) into Munchen (which is where the router points to and is running sshd) by using its local IP address, but I can't go from Munchen to Chemnitz (even though the server is running and the firewall should be allowing the connection). [URL]
Details of the system setup are below.
Munchen (receives all port 22 requests now)
Ubuntu 10.04
Chemnitz (I want to receive all port 22 requests and SSH into other computers on the network from it. Ultimately it will be a file sharing box, hosting a webpage, running an ftp server, etc.)
Fedora 14

A week ago I purchased an VPS. The first few days I was having trouble to set up an outgoing connection on the VPS. Eventually it turned out to be some misconfiguration of the server where the VPS is hosted on.Since then I have installed the apache server, but I'm still not able to access the apache server from an external computer. I already have contacted the provider, but they haven't replied yet. To speed things up I was hoping someone could check my configuration to be sure nothing is wrong with it.To be sure I posted all configuration and information that I think would be important. Please contact me if you need more information.

I can't get past the "scp -p id_rsa.pub" step; ssh fails with "Could not resolve hostname" errors. Both machines are connected with a hub. I've also tried using the IP address in the place of hostnames with no avail. Both machines can ping eachother successfully.The server has the "openssh-server" package installed.

I'm looking for a program that I can use to keep track of how much bandwidth goes to the various computers in my small network.All of the bandwidth goes through my squid server, so the easiest would be to just have a program that can accurately analyze the squid logs and tell me how much bandwidth is going to the different computers.I've tried both "bandwidthd" and "calamaris" I can't figure out how to get either one to actually do anything in Ubuntu.

I will cut to the chase. I am running three ubuntu computers on my local network:my desktop which runs ethernet, and two laptops which run wireless on the same network, and all from the same router. For purpose of this thread, I am concentrating on this one issue with pulse(assuming its pulse doing this). When I have two computers running at the same time, or even all three, I can hear bursts of sound coming from the other computer, not all the time, but consistently. I don't know what is causing this. I've searched hi and low in all ubuntu pulse audio forums and those mentioning pulseaudio and I have not seen this issue posted anywhere. Most threads deal with issues of not being able to get pulse to recognise audio from one computer to the other...mine is just the opposite...I'M TRYING TO STOP THIS FROM HAPPENING!...... If I'm listening to my music on my desktop, I don't want to hear what my son is playing on his laptop...and vice versa. all the computers at my home are running lucid lynx, latest updates and latest approved kernel as of the date of this post. 2.6.32-26-generic.

I have a total of four partitions on my Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic) system:
sda1 = /boot
sda2 = /
sda3 = swap
sda4 = /home
My boot partition is 94 MiB which I was recommended would be more than enough space. Turns out my /boot partition is full and I now get a message every time I log into Ubuntu saying, 'The volume "boot" has only 0 bytes disk space remaining.' Also after installing GParted to check up on my partitions I got the following error in apt-get:
Code:
Setting up gparted (0.4.5-2ubuntu1) ...
Setting up kpartx (0.4.8-14ubuntu2) ...
Processing triggers for libc-bin ...
ldconfig deferred processing now taking place
Processing triggers for initramfs-tools ...
[Code]....
I have no experience messing around in my /boot partition besides modifying GRUB. I think most likely I just have too many kernel versions installed in the /boot partition?

A relative will soon be traveling to China to adopt a child. China is cracking down on communication tools like Skype. Some people are using Virtual Private Networks (VPN) to ensure they can communicate with families back home. I know nothing about VPNs so I have some questions.
1. Is VPN some kind of software that you can install on 2 computers to have a secure communications?
2. Is there something in Ubuntu's Software Center that I should try?
3. If China is cracking down on external communication, is VPN the best tool to ensure communication back home?

I am trying to install either Ubuntu or CentOS server in text mode only. The problem I am having is that the hardware that I am trying to install it on has no vga output, I can only connect to it via console cable. I am able to boot from USB CDROm or flash drive but unfortunately since the hardware does not have a gpu (atleast none that I'm aware of) I am unable to get past the boot screen. If someone can point me in the right direction or know where I would be able to download the text install of either OS, that would be awesome.

I have a portable 320 GB USB HP SimpleSave external hard drive, and I want to install Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop to use on both of my computers when Windows is letting me down. The last time I tried to install 10.04 a week after it came out, I was presented with tons of errors, even though I did it the same exact way I did it with 9.10 that worked. I would like some help on the subject of installing them on usb hard drives. Most the time, it's GRUB being antsy about where it's installed. IF I don't change where to install GRUB, it won't let me boot on any other computer, or USB port.

What is the easiest and/or safest way to migrate my Wubi 10.04 install to a full install? Currently, my Dell XPS M1530 is currently dual-booting Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and Windows Vista Home Premium, and I've decided after using Windows a total of around 4 hours over the past 6 months that I can probably let it go. So, I don't need Windows anymore and I believe I'm ready for a full install of Ubuntu. Though, I probably will wait for 11.04 to come out first.
A few ways I've thought of already are: 1) Find an external hard drive to put the Wubi files on. 2) Upload files to an storage website. 3) Temporarily put the Wubi files onto another computer (Windows). All these meaning I would then wipe my harddrive and install Ubuntu from a CD. And by "files", I mean Documents, Pictures, Downloads, etc.
EDIT: deleting all my applications, because OpenOffice.org won't reinstall on my computer due to dependency issues while attempting to install LibreOffice. So a fresh install would be nice.

I'm running Windows and 9.04 in a dedicated partition on my HP DV1000 (32bit), and I would like to boot to a 10.04 Live CD to make sure that everything will work with the upgrade. But, no matter what I try (unetbootin USB, Linux Mint, CDs of both) I can't get the machine to boot to anything other than the HD.
I did a wubi installation of 10.04 on a Compaq CQ laptop and ran into the same problem. I went into the BIOS on both machines and I think I tried all the different settings, but no go. I must be missing something. Is working through the BIOS the only way to get one's machine to boot from a usb or optical drive, or is there another trick to it?

I have port forwarding. I have even tried different ports but they all seem to be blocked. What could be wrong? I have a netgear router.

I have a debian home server right now, I'm using samba for my file server but I was wanting to stream my movies and music to my other computers. My family (the other users on the network) are NOT computer savvy, and to top it off they are using both Windows (xp) and Mac (Snow Leopard) machines. So I'm looking for software that is simple to use that will allow other operating systems to use it. I would think the easiest way would be to stream the music/movies through a home website. I have seen quite a few programs out there that stream music, but none for movies.
