I just want to use 100% free (non-proprietary) softwares, how to choose between the repos, and if someone has done it before, can s/he give me some advice (like how can I avoid installing nonfree software unintentionally)
I want to experiment a bit because till this day, I did not care about it. For me it just should be working. Now, I want to see if I can do it without any problems, and experience the 100% free linux.
I installed Ububutu, tested my graphics card performance with glxgears, installed the proprietary fglrx drivers and get the same result. I was under the impression the proprietary drivers provided superior performance, is that not true?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI currently have an nvidia card (GeForce 8800 GTX) and use the proprietary driver since I game a lot on wine (games like mass effect 2, prince of persia 2008, and some more recent games). I was wondering if using an equivalent ATI card with the free driver would show the same performance as my current on, or if the ATI driver isn't THAT mature yet. Would I be able to play the latest games with it on wine, or am I better of with nvidia and the propietary driver.
(I definitely know nouveau doesn't stand up to it *yet*, i.e., Prince of Persia complains about lack of video features). (note I don't care about a nouveau vs radeon debate, nor for a nvidia vs ati debate, the question is ati+free vs nvidia+propietary).
Fedora is a distro that is focused only on free and open source software.This means that Fedora doesn't distribute any proprietary or patent encumbred software, so they'll not be present in the official Fedora releases and repositories. This does not mean that they cannot be instaled in a Fedora distro. Because there are many users who want to run some of that software, the community has been providing, since a long time ago, alternative ways to acomplish that. This is very important when a new release is distributed, because it attracts many first time users and not all of them are aware of the above mentioned, and every six months, the same questions are placed in the forums, regarding that.
To help new users to install the non free and proprietary stuff mentioned in the titlle, I decided to leave here a fast summary, chosed among many of the available options.

I bought a brand new pc (dell XPS 8300).I' installed suse (64 bit), on it.Graphic card is Radeon HD 6770 My screen, a Samsung BX2231 have a 1920x1080 resolution. Despite that being the set resolution, the image don't take all the screen, leaving a black border around the screen. The same happens on windows, but there is an option to set that that.
So I installed the proprietary drivers. I have indeed the option to set the image full screen. But, i get some display weirdness. The status bar on the top is all messed, so are the icons on it. With some things the text don't show right. If anyone have a clue on how to set the right size with the free drivers,or fix the wackiness with the proprietary ones.
Is this card supported in Squeeze by either the non-free firmware or the proprietary driver? I just got one to stick into an older box that will be going to a college girl that wants the 3D desktop in KDE. The built-in video was a joke and wouldn't even work without compositing. It was one of those crappy, non-standard pieces of crap known as a "Unichrome" (not the pro).

View 6 Replies View RelatedI've got a question on free disk space. I'm currently running CentOS 5.5 on in Xenserver virtual environment. We've had an issue with disk space. My question is as follows: - from a ssh connection i run df -h this gives the value of 90% used leaving me with 9GB. If I use system monitor via a VNC connection the free disk space value is 20GB free on the same volume. Which one is correct? I do use SNMP to monitor the same volume and should alert me when < 10% is free I know this works as I set the alert threshold to < 90% I get an alert.
