Ubuntu :: Upon Reboot - Go Into The CLI And Unable To Get To The GUI ?
Aug 15, 2010
I'm running 9.10 64 bit. Yesterday, I installed some updates (through update manager) and, upon reboot, I go into the CLI and am unable to get to the GUI.
Things that I've tried:
1) Reverted back to the most basic xorg.conf file.
Quite often (I'd say 50% of the time) when I install updates that ask me to restart my computer, I just get a black screen upon reboot. Normally, I can go in with the live cd, revert to the oldest xorg.conf file, reboot, install drivers, reboot again, and I'm good.
Not so much this time. Reverting back to the oldest file didn't change anything - I still boot into the command line.
2) Code:
This causes my computer to flash black (like x is starting) but then the command line reappears with a bunch of messages of the form
Code:
Where the "x" stand for random numbers. These messages are followed by the following:
Code:
waiting for X server to shut down ddxSigGiveUp: Closing log
I get these messages regardless of the version of xorg.conf I am using.
I've also tried
Code:
and
Code:
But neither do anything (the first tells me to try the second, and the second gives me a bunch of random errors that I don't feel like reproducing, but will try.
3) Code:
This does absolutely nothing. I get no output at all. It doesn't ask me any questions or produce any error messages. I just get the prompt again on the next line.

I have recently upgraded to the 10.04 Alpha and have been unable to reboot or shutdown. I know it's just an alpha and therefore problems are bound to exist, so I tried reinstalling from a live cd of Alpha 3. But I am still unable to reboot or shutdown. To clarify what happens, I click on shutdown or reboot, the pop-up appears, I click on the shutdown/reboot button and it seems to complete it. It says that processes have been killed and something has exited with 255. But my computer is still on. I am guessing that Ubuntu is shutting down, it's just not actually shutting my computer down or restarting it.

1st I am relatively new to linux (but not to *nix). I have 4 disks assembled in the following intel ahci bios fake raid arrays:
2x320GB RAID1 - used for operating systems md126
2x1TB RAID1 - used for data md125
I have used the raid of size 320GB to install my operating system and the second raid I didn't even select during the installation of Fedora 14. After successful partitioning and installation of Fedora, I tried to make the second array available, it was possible to make it visible in linux with mdadm --assembe --scan , after that I created one maximum size partition and 1 maximum size ext4 filesystem in it. Mounted, and used it. After restart - a few I/O errors during boot regarding md125 + inability to mount the filesystem on it and dropped into repair shell. I commented the filesystem in fstab and it booted. To my surprise, the array was marked as "auto read only":
[Code]...
and the partition in it was not available as device special file in /dev:

So I'm doing some tests to see if I can create a LDAP server + Domain controler with Samba on Ubuntu 7.10. It might seem weird to use such an old release but I've seen a few guides on that particular version and I thought I'd give it a tr using this guide
url
So far I'm good until I modify the pam.d and nsswitch with auth-client, after reboot I'm unable to log in to the system and I'm forced to go into safe mode and restore the backups of those files.
What should I be looking for to prevent this from happening? I'm assuming that it's essential to modify these files in order to enable the LDAP authentication on the server.

Further to this LQ thread which Tinkster solved by suggesting the last command (thanks Tinkster) I have been exploring last -x reboot and have found that the reported duration is incorrect for the last reboot and shutdown when a old wtmp file is used. Not having a record for the following shutdown, last assumes that the system has been up until the current time and similarly for the shutdown.
The output comes in time order, latest first, each line showing the time of the reboot and the uptime from then to shutdown. Using last -x reboot shutdown to show the shutdown time, here's an illustration
Code:
shutdown system down 2.6.29.6-smp Sun Mar 7 15:35 - 03:02 (11:27)
reboot system boot 2.6.29.6-smp Sun Mar 7 09:35 (05:59)
09:35 until 15:35 is 05:59.
When the uptime exceeds 24 hours it is shown as (<days>+<hours:minutes) like this
Code:
shutdown system down 2.6.29.6-smp Sun Feb 21 12:39 - 13:20 (00:40)
reboot system boot 2.6.29.6-smp Sat Feb 20 09:39 (1+02:59)
09:39 until 12:39 the next day is 1 day 02:59.
The time in parentheses at the end of the shutdown lines is normally the time until the next shutdown.
So far so good. The incorrect output is for the last reboot and shutdown of an old wtmp file. Here's the output of last /var/log/wtmp -x reboot shutdown; last -f /var/log/wtmp.1 -x reboot shutdown
Code:
[snip]
reboot system boot 2.6.29.6-smp Fri Mar 12 07:42 (01:54)
shutdown system down 2.6.29.6-smp Fri Mar 12 01:31 - 09:37 (08:05)
wtmp begins Thu Mar 11 08:25:26 2010
[snip]
reboot system boot 2.6.29.6-smp Wed Mar 10 14:12 (15+01:42)
shutdown system down 2.6.29.6-smp Wed Mar 10 12:41 - 15:54 (15+03:13)
[snip]
The boot started at "Wed Mar 10 14:12" which had an actual uptime of 1 day 11:20 is reported as 15 days 03:13 which is the time from then until the last -f /var/log/wtmp.1 -x reboot shutdown command was issued. The time from shutdown to shutdown is similarly affected.

I use a few different hard drives that I plug into one PC instead of partitioning, since it causes problems. I plugged in my Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit and it booted up in 1024x768 instead of 1280x1024 which is the default resolution for this monitor. Why would it change when it's been 1280 x 1024 everytime but this time? When I check the display settings it doesn't even have 1280x1024 anymore?

I am posting here rather than in the Maverick Meerkat section because this happened in Lucid too.I have just rebooted my system and ram usage is at 16% (of 2GB) whilst nothing is running other than desktop and Compiz. However if I leave the system running for 2 days (just using suspend from time to time) the ram usage will increase to 25 or 26% at idle. This will reduce again to 16% after a reboot. In short it seems that some processes are not fully releasing the ram they use and there is a build up of wasted ram.Does anybody else notice anything similar? Does anybody have any suggestions as to how to nail down the offending processes?

I have a PC running 10.10 Gnome 2.32.0 Kernal 2.6.35-24-generic-pae, i686
I am using /dev/sda3 on my primary hard drive (200Gb) to run my Kernal I have all my documents stored on a second, 500Gb hard drive: sdb2
I have noticed in the past 2 days that I delete or move files and folders, but when I reboot they re-appear. I have ALSO noticed today that the Templates folder within my Documents folder, I have a copy of my /etc/ directory... It is a copy and I am wondering:
a. How it got there
b. Could it be the cause of the problems
c. How I remove it.

Why my pc freezes upon reboot once in a while, especially after certain updates? It never happened under Vista. I'm with Ubuntu 10.10 since October, never used Linux before. I think it's a bug in Maverick but I'm too lazy in reading the very long sticky! What happens at those very few times is a normal reboot, but a few seconds after a gradual and then complete freezing, you would have time to click the firefox icon but it will never open. Fastest way to get out of trouble is to reboot forced or other if you can.Maverick then works fine as ever.Just embarrassing I have to undergo all this. Can this bug be solved in the near future? My PC is Intel 32 bits 2 core with 2 GHz and 320 GB and I have 4GB RAM but I think it has nothing to do with the hardware, it has more to do with the OS!

I'm totally unable to play or mount audio CDs and unable to use video DVD's on my box right now. When I insert an audio CD I get a dialog box saying:
Unable to mount disc: Location is not mountable
and if I check messages in the Log File Viewer I see the following text repeated (save for the last line) a couple of dozen times.
Code:
May 24 13:04:37 Amber kernel: [ 6680.434685] sr 0:0:0:0: [sr0] Result: hostbyte=DID_OK driverbyte=DRIVER_SENSE
May 24 13:04:37 Amber kernel: [ 6680.434691] sr 0:0:0:0: [sr0] Sense Key : Illegal Request [current]
May 24 13:04:37 Amber kernel: [ 6680.434695] sr 0:0:0:0: [sr0] Add. Sense: Illegal mode for this track
[code]...
on a similar but ultimately unrelated thread someone was asked to enter a few commands so I tried them and the following was the output:
Code:
main@Amber:~$ ls /dev/scd*
/dev/scd0
main@Amber:~$ sudo mount /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom0
[code]...
An error occurred: Could not open location; you might not have permission to open the file. As far as I can tell I have the relevant CSS libraries installed I'm lost without being able to play CD's and DVD's on my system.

I cannot install Kubuntu (or Unbuntu) 10.4 on my husband's computer. I have spent 5 hours on this and cannot get anywhere. I am deeply frustrated. The iso I burned to CD is good (works on 2 other computers). His computer will not boot from USB, no matter what I do to the drive order in BIOS. After loading the blue screen with the Kubuntu logo on it (and the blue-white dots), the screen changes to black and shows the following text:
BusyBox v1.13.3 (Ubuntu 1:1.13.3-1ubuntu11) built-in shell (ash) (initrafs) Unable to find a medium containing a live file system.
He really needs to get rid of WinXP. Kubuntu is what I have on my computer (and love it!). Here is some info about his computer:
OS Name Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Build 2600
OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation

I hit enter to boot it and it attempts to but after a few seconds gives me the error "unable to mount file system....a maintenance shell will be started"
This occurred after I was using it and then everything suddenly froze up on me and I had to crash out Now this!

I noticed that every time I reboot some system settings sort of roll-back automatically to some time in the past.
So far I noticed these:
-All the aMule setting. Includes connection ports and Incoming folder, very annoying.
-Firefox search box engines. every reboot the list of engines rolls back to include a lot of engines i don't want and have to remove every time. this is the only thing in Firefox that is affected, bookmarks and add-ons stick.
-Keyboard layouts. Tried clicking "apply system-wide". still rolls-back after reboot.
What could cause this? How can I set these things permanently?
I'm using ubuntu 9.10 32-bit

As the title suggests, I have to restart alsa everytime I restart the computer. Obviously that's pretty annoying.
So once restart I normally do:
Code:
sudo alsa force-restart
It will then give me a few warnings (see screenshot 2) and then unload and reload all the drivers and everything works fine.

I am using Ubuntu Intrepid now, (no more Karmic, at least for some time)...
I connect to Internet through a proxy server. I have to configure my connection by going to Network Manager and then editing IPv4 settings, making the address selection manual instead of DHCP and then enter the static IP provided to me by the server and also the address of my gateway... Then I have to go to the Network Proxy under System --> Preferences and set my system proxy (Apply System Wide)...
Well that seems normal, except that I have to do the connection configuration part every time I reboot... Every time i reboot, the connection is back to default i.e.
Quote:
Name: Auto eth0
IPv4 Settings --> Method: Automatic(DHCP)
I have to change it again to
Quote:
Name: IST-LAN
IPv4 Settings --> Method: Manual
IP Address: 192.168.xxx.xxx
Netmask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.xxx.xxx
One of my friends reported the same thing to me after a fresh installation... So maybe that is a bug in the Network Manager of Interpid... I need to know a workaround, or a repair.
