Feb 5, 2010Since Gnome doesn't support a 'reboot into [OS]' feature, one has to use a script. Such a script would be used in both windows (probably batch file) and linux (maybe python?) to replace the GRUB menu file and by that select the OS in which you want to boot on reboot.Both OS's should run another script on startup to put the default menu file back.
Problems:- Ext4: there are no windows drivers available (yet)(they would have to support reading and writing)- GRUB2: the old GRUB menu was very easy, one had to edit just one file (!or replace it!). In GRUB2 things got complicated. I think you can edit grub.cfg and that it will still work, the reason why you should not edit it is just because it gets overwritten by running update-grub2. But I'm not sure. If - The script I found is used to edit the Grub file, not to replace it with another one. (This is but a minor problem.)
Solutions:- Ext4 is mountable with Ext2fsd (not with Ext2ifs because of the inode size), it has been reported to work with extent enabled, but I haven't tested it yet.Here is a tutorial to mounting Ext4 drives in windows (which require disabling extent)- If editing the grub.cfg would really be a bad idea, downgrading to GRUB (legacy)- If I couldn't mount Ext4, trying to put Grub on a separate FAT/NTFS partition (is this possible with Grub/Grub2?) or else downgrading to Ext3 (= slower)
Ubuntu :: Gnome-schedule Doesn't Start At Reboot
Jun 6, 2010I've scheduled a task in gnome-schedule to run at each reboot. When I click on "preview task" it initiates a one-time run just fine. However, after reboot it just doesn't want to start the task.

Mar 26, 2010I dont understand why but my theme changes everytime i reboot. The original theme Human changes to i think dust. when i open the appearance applet to change back the theme, the original human theme is already selected. So i have to select some other theme and then i select human theme, then the theme changes.Also the order of my taskbar icons changes and also the icons themselves.

How can I reset this? I have been using ubuntu for a while, but switch to debian for more stability. I am not very familiar with debian graphics or gnome desktop.

Fedora :: Gnome Desktop Wallpaper Changes Don't Stay In Effect After Reboot
Jun 9, 2010This is something that I started to notice in F12 and it appears to be the case as well in F13. Any changes that I make to my desktop wallpaper in Gnome don't stay in effect after a reboot. Any ideas as to what is going on here? I don't mind the default blue swirly thing in F13, but I at least want the style change from scale to center to stick.
Choosing the 'set as default' option doesn't seem to help either, as that changes the screen you see at the Gnome login. Once I log into my account the default desktop wallpaper is still there.

I can get a virtual console by banging on the fn ctrl option f2 keys I can then use 'startx' to get another black screen but clicking around for a bit gives me the gnome fallback windowing. Is there any way I can force the gnome fallback to start up directly on a reboot?

Sep 4, 2011Recently my GNOME (bottom) panel started reshuffling items after reboot.
I tried removing the panel, recreating it and placing new items on the panel. After rebooting the PC everything is undone. The panel reshuffles the items (even when the "Lock To Panel" is used). Also the items that are moved to the top panel, after rebooting return to the bottom panel.
Does anyone have a solution for this issue?

Mar 25, 2010Further to this LQ thread which Tinkster solved by suggesting the last command (thanks Tinkster) I have been exploring last -x reboot and have found that the reported duration is incorrect for the last reboot and shutdown when a old wtmp file is used. Not having a record for the following shutdown, last assumes that the system has been up until the current time and similarly for the shutdown.
The output comes in time order, latest first, each line showing the time of the reboot and the uptime from then to shutdown. Using last -x reboot shutdown to show the shutdown time, here's an illustration

The boot started at "Wed Mar 10 14:12" which had an actual uptime of 1 day 11:20 is reported as 15 days 03:13 which is the time from then until the last -f /var/log/wtmp.1 -x reboot shutdown command was issued. The time from shutdown to shutdown is similarly affected.
Ubuntu Installation :: GNOME Failsafe Works But GNOME Doesn't - 10.04 Upgrade
May 27, 2010Older machine here that I upgraded to 10.04 after a clean install of 9.10 some months ago. When booting into GNOME, the desktop image flashes on the screen and the second the bars on top and bottom try to appear the system boots out of the desktop and returns to the log on screen. I assume this is a crash of Xserver, but just guessing. Per another page I ran: lspci | grep VGAand returned:

I know - old machine Typing this from failsafe mode, would be great to hear from someone as to what I can do to get this working in normal mode again.

May 3, 2010When i logged into a gnome desktop i got this message: "The GNOME session manager was unable to read file:'/home/(desktop name)/ICEauthority'. If this file exists it must be readable by you for GNOME to work properly. try logging in with failsafe session and removing the file." What commands do i use for that? or do i need to do something else?

Mar 12, 2010I have installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my Dell GX240. I have severe difficulty logging in. If I try to login on GNOME or GNOME fail safe mode , I just cant get in . I keep getting the login screen again. I am able to go into terminal mode. Sometimes I have to try upto 100 times to login in GNOME or failsafe mode. Once I am in everything is fine. Is there a way to do some troublshooting? Also transfer to USB sticks is very slow - sometimes as slow as 1MB per min. Is this normal with Ubuntu?

With Gnome 2.28 it doesn't occurs. Then ii seems a gnome 2.3 problem.

This apparently causes gnome to use the Gnome icon theme on boot, instead of the Humanity theme I selected in Preferences->Appearance. I just have to go to Preferences-Appearance again to get the Humanity theme back to work (I don't even have to change any settings, just going there is enough.) When I remove awn from my startup applications, this problem doesn't occur.

Apr 28, 2011Please excuse my ignorance, but I need to get it straight. I've been reading and trying to find out more about these three new desktop environments, but still am rather confused. I have had Unity on my netbook for a couple of months now and know it inside out (more or less by now). The problem is: what is the main difference between Gnome 3 and Gnome Shell?
To my understanding Gnome 3 will be a continuation of the panelled Gnome we are so used to? But then I read the panels will be gone forever, so I'm confused again Gnome Shell is somewhat similar-looking to Unity, but I haven't had a chance to try it properly yet.

version: gnome-applets-2.32.0-1.fc14.x86_64
symptom: via right click on a gnome panel, perform "add to panel" and choose Dwell Click.
Gnome panel bites the dust with SIGSEGV at this point, restarts, and then you've got dwell click on the panel.
Anyone else seeing this, and better yet, have a solution?

CentOS 5 :: 5.2 (native) - Gnome Dektop Munged Slightly Due To Attempted Gnome Upgrade
Mar 11, 2009Against all advice in Centos docs, I built and installed several gnome packages in order to upgrade to the latest Gnumeric. Among them were: fontconfig, pango, gtk+, cairo, glib. goffice, pixman, tiff, and atk. Afterwards, I got missing fonts with some apps, but the biggest problem is interference with my Vmware Workstation GUIs. Yesterday I removed all the libraries I installed hoping to recover. Now things are better, but when I open a terminal on the desktop it opens jammed in the upper-left corner with the top grab bar out of reach of the mouse. Before I remove the ~/.gnome* directories, how to restore things?
