Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading From 10.04 Beta 1 To Beta 2?
Apr 4, 2010So here's the schedule for 10.04:
April 8th, 2010 - Beta 2 release;
April 22nd, 2010 - Release Candidate;
April 29th, 2010 - Final release of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.
If I have 10.04 beta 1, could I just continue to update and not have to burn another disk to install? Or do I have to burn the beta 2 and reinstall if I want it?

Apr 5, 2010I thought I'd give 10.04 a try since it's an LTS release and I was still using Jaunty. I did the upgrade over SSH using sudo*do-release-upgrade*-d and at first it just upgraded me to Karmic. After the reboot I ran the same command again and it looked like it was upgrading this time to Lucid. Now however after the reboot I no longer could log in (no SSH) and after inspecting the system locally by digging out and old monitor and keyboard, it seams the system hangs during boot.
I went into the Grub menu and found that there is no server kernel listed (apart from the old Jaunty one), only generic-pae and generic. None of these will boot, and if I try the recovery modes the keyboard doesn't function when I get to the recovery menu. Also if I boot the old 2.6.28-17-server, it does boot, but the keyboard also won't function once it boots. I can SSH in once the old kernel has booted, but when I tried to install linux-image-2.6.32-19-server via apt, it can't be found. Furher investigation online sems to indicate that there's only a 64-bit server package and no 32-bit package. What's that all about, is 32-bit no longer supported on the server platfom, and if so is my install now screwed?

Is it possible/easy/painless to upgrade to the release version when it comes out? Or should I stop investing any work into the beta right now and wait for the release?

Apr 15, 2010I need to install a distro on a new machine. I'm edging towards Ubuntu 10.04 but I don't have time to wait until the official release date. If I install Beta 2 and continue to update it until the official release will my version be the same as the official release or am I going to have to make a fresh install of the official release?
I don't mind putting up with some minor bugs (especially as some big ones seem to have been solved since Beta 1) but I can't be doing with another fresh install. This seems to be a problem with a lot of distros. Fedora is every 6 months with no LTS solution, Debian is outdated on a lot of packages I use and Arch just seems to spend a lot of it's time broken.

Apr 23, 2010Alright, I have downloaded the upgrade for 10.04 and installed upgraded from my previous 8.04. Everything was working all fine until I had to reboot my pc. When I did i got some errors

It goes on to tell me that my UUID does not exist. Then it says
ALERT! Alert! /dev/disk/by-uuid/xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xx$ does not exist. Dropping to a shell! It then drops to a very simple shell which has no flexibility and is very frustrating.
EDIT: This is the full error message

check rootdelay =(did the system wait long enough?)
check root =(did the system wait for the right device?)
missing modules ( cat /proc/modules)ALERT! /dev/mapper/debian-root does not exist dropping to a shell.

Nov 27, 2010I am trying to use Skype beta on my acer aspire one with ubuntu 10.10. The video runs brilliantly and i can also here my wife from the other end but she cannot hear me. Apparently something is fishy with my mic input. I tried alsamixer and everything is in unmute. My alsa version is 1.0.23. The only think she hears is a loud hissing noise which is normally my bat voice but she doesnt need to know that. I can record my voice in the sound recorder but nothing comes out in Skype!

Mar 26, 2010Very new to Ubuntu, but I was able to upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10 with no problems. New to forum and couldnt find any help in other posts. Like everyone, I was itching to try the newest and greatest. Tried updating last week but had the "openoffice..." bug and wouldn't install. Tried last night and everything went fine, until I restarted the system. Now it won't complete the boot. It show the GRUB, and some other startups, but them blank screen. 10 min later nothing. Tried it 3 more times. I think I am stuck, right? New install?This is what I am thinking of doing- 1. boot from old cd to get my files out. 2. fresh install of 9.10 and be patient for the offical release. Is there anything else I could do?

Apr 22, 2010When I tried to update my ubuntu, I received an error regarding the UUID not existing. When I updated, everything on the system was swell, but now I get the UUID does not exist. I reckon that ubuntu 10.04 does not need UUID. I can only run from the ubuntu shell with limited commands. I tried to edit the file /etc/default/Grub and it claimed to not exist. I have 2 separate versions of ubuntu on there, but it's using the grub installed from ubuntu 8.04. It says I'm using grub .97 beta. I am sure I have a brief idea of what to do. The problem is accessing the file necessary to do that. I will have to remove a line that says "LINUX_USE_UUID=true" or something like that. I don't know where that folder is. Apparently people say that its in /etc/default/grub. That doesn't exist for me.

Jan 21, 2011So i have installed FireFox 4 Beta (..some reason its called Minefield 4.0 Browser??) on ubuntu 10.04 - now I have recently installed it onto my Windows machine about a week ago and I am inlove with it over Chrome, which is why I made the switch for my Ubuntu machine aswell - but I am wondering..
1) Why does it look like Firefox 3?? On windows its a completely new layout, design, and feel.. but on Ubuntu it looks and acts just like regular Firefox 3.
2) Whats with the name difference? When I pull up my browswer data online it says its Mozilla 5.0, but just dont understand?
3) Some javascript/jquery does not work anymore?
Is there something that I have done wrong, or installed the wrong package? I tried to download the file from firefox's website directly (a .tar.bz2 file) but could not figure out how to install it [i am an ubuntu newbie], so I went into terminal and installed it with the package manager with the following command(s):

Apr 5, 2011I wanted to try out the Natty beta 1, but apparently it fails to load the graphics drivers. When I run the "Additional drivers" app, no drivers are listed. I installed the nvidia-current package and rebooted, but nothing happened. This problem occurs with an install in a VirtualBox machine, as well as with the live CD. Running Maverick with Compiz and the proprierary Nvidia drivers on a Lenovo T61 with Nvidia Quadro NVS 140, built in 2008. I hope this machine is not too old already to upgrade to Natty?! What can I do to see the fully graphics-enabled Natty/Unity desktop on my laptop?
