Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading From 8.04 To 10.04 Beta - Get Errors : UUID Does Not Exist?

Apr 23, 2010

Alright, I have downloaded the upgrade for 10.04 and installed upgraded from my previous 8.04. Everything was working all fine until I had to reboot my pc. When I did i got some errors

Mount: Mounting none on /dev

It goes on to tell me that my UUID does not exist. Then it says

ALERT! Alert! /dev/disk/by-uuid/xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xx$ does not exist. Dropping to a shell! It then drops to a very simple shell which has no flexibility and is very frustrating.

EDIT: This is the full error message

Mount: Mounting none on /dev
boot args cat /proc/cmdline
check rootdelay =(did the system wait long enough?)
check root =(did the system wait for the right device?)
missing modules ( cat /proc/modules)ALERT! /dev/mapper/debian-root does not exist dropping to a shell.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading From 10.04 Beta 1 To Beta 2?

Apr 4, 2010

So here's the schedule for 10.04:

April 8th, 2010 - Beta 2 release;
April 22nd, 2010 - Release Candidate;
April 29th, 2010 - Final release of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.

If I have 10.04 beta 1, could I just continue to update and not have to burn another disk to install? Or do I have to burn the beta 2 and reinstall if I want it?

Ubuntu Installation :: Dev/disk/by-uuid/xxxx Does Not Exist?

Jan 23, 2010

Fresh install of 9.10. Update all. The update froze at the very end: configuring grub-pc. I let it run like that all night before settling for a reboot while the update manager was still running. (The update also raised the kernel version.) After reboot, I tried the newer kernel [2.6.31-17-generic] at the grub menu and got this error:

Quote:

udevadm trigger is not permitted while udev is unconfigured.
udevadm settle is not permitted while udev is unconfigured.
svgalib: Cannot open /dev/mem.[code].....

And, cat /proc/modules gives me a long list of modules (too much to retype for now).So my hard drive is there. maybe some errors on the / home partition [sda6] and I can get to the root directory.

FYI: MS-win XP still boots fine from grub.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading 32-bit Server To 10.04 Beta 1?

Apr 5, 2010

I thought I'd give 10.04 a try since it's an LTS release and I was still using Jaunty. I did the upgrade over SSH using sudo*do-release-upgrade*-d and at first it just upgraded me to Karmic. After the reboot I ran the same command again and it looked like it was upgrading this time to Lucid. Now however after the reboot I no longer could log in (no SSH) and after inspecting the system locally by digging out and old monitor and keyboard, it seams the system hangs during boot.

I went into the Grub menu and found that there is no server kernel listed (apart from the old Jaunty one), only generic-pae and generic. None of these will boot, and if I try the recovery modes the keyboard doesn't function when I get to the recovery menu. Also if I boot the old 2.6.28-17-server, it does boot, but the keyboard also won't function once it boots. I can SSH in once the old kernel has booted, but when I tried to install linux-image-2.6.32-19-server via apt, it can't be found. Furher investigation online sems to indicate that there's only a 64-bit server package and no 32-bit package. What's that all about, is 32-bit no longer supported on the server platfom, and if so is my install now screwed?

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading From Beta To Release Recommended?

Apr 1, 2010

I'm fed up with Gentoo and would like to migrate to Ubuntu. I just installed 10.04 Beta, but I'm wondering if I should continue configuring my system. Is it possible/easy/painless to upgrade to the release version when it comes out? Or should I stop investing any work into the beta right now and wait for the release?

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading 10.04 Beta 2 To Official Releas?

Apr 15, 2010

I need to install a distro on a new machine. I'm edging towards Ubuntu 10.04 but I don't have time to wait until the official release date. If I install Beta 2 and continue to update it until the official release will my version be the same as the official release or am I going to have to make a fresh install of the official release?

I don't mind putting up with some minor bugs (especially as some big ones seem to have been solved since Beta 1) but I can't be doing with another fresh install. This seems to be a problem with a lot of distros. Fedora is every 6 months with no LTS solution, Debian is outdated on a lot of packages I use and Arch just seems to spend a lot of it's time broken.

Ubuntu :: Alert! /dev/sda/uuid Does Not Exist On 9.10

I would get the message that the uuid file does not exist. I've been online looking for fixes since yesterday morning and nothing has helped at all. I've read online that I should run fdisk -l to obtain info to share with others, but that command doesn't work in any command prompt I open. I am running Ubuntu 9.10 with the latest patches and I'm sure you guys know that it runs Grub2 loader...if that helps at all.

Ubuntu Installation :: Errors Upgrading Release From Local Mirror

When doing do-release-upgrade -d to upgrade from karmik to lucid. I using local mirror ftp://ubuntu.snacho.ru (also have http that works but not browseable). When I change lines in /etc/apt/sources.list from local mirror to official [URL] all works fine. I don't want to download 1Gb from internet (because of traffic cost). What is wrong with local mirror ? I can communicate with its owner, but what he needs to change on the mirror ?

Fedora Installation :: Upgrading To FC12 Due To Conflicts And Dependency Errors

Feb 17, 2010

I've been trying to upgrade my installation for some time now and just can't quite get it right. I would upgrade from the DVD but the installer hangs when it says "Looking for installation images on CD device /dev/sr0". However, that's not really my question. I've resorted to the upgrade instructions as found at [URL]. If I don't use the '--skip-broken' option it complains about the following:

abrt-gui-0.0.11-1.fc12.x86_64 from fedora
abrt-libs-1.0.6-1.fc12.x86_64 from updates
samba-3.4.5-55.fc12.x86_64 from updates
samba-client-3.4.5-55.fc12.x86_64 from updates
samba-common-3.4.5-55.fc12.x86_64 from updates
samba-winbind-3.4.5-55.fc12.x86_64 from updates
samba-winbind-clients-3.4.5-55.fc12.x86_64 from updates

If I use the skip broken option, it then complains about:
Transaction Check Error:
file /usr/share/locale/de/LC_MESSAGES/cryptsetup.mo from install of cryptsetup-luks-1.1.0-0.4.fc12.x86_64 conflicts with file from package cryptsetup-luks-1.0.6-7.fc11.i586
file /usr/share/locale/sv/LC_MESSAGES/cryptsetup.mo from install of cryptsetup-luks-1.1.0-0.4.fc12.x86_64 conflicts with file from package cryptsetup-luks-1.0.6-7.fc11.i586

I can't seem to remedy this problem. There were other conflicts but I just removed those packages. When I attempt to remove 'cryptsetup-luks' it then tells me it's going to remove something like 200 others which did not sound like a good idea.

Debian :: RT Kernel Not Booting - "/dev/disk/by-uuid/..." Does Not Exist

Ubuntu Installation :: Non-existant UUID Number Prevents Boot Up?

Feb 1, 2010

I put my two SATA hard drives in a new computer (new mb, cpu, no pci SATA adapter, built-in nVidia graphics), and I thought everything was going well. The Mythbuntu logo came up, but the bar at the bottom did not move. It eventually dropped me out to a (initramfs) prompt.

When I used the recovery mode, this is where it had problems:

[ 4.756000]ata1:SATA link up 3.0 Gbps (SStatus 123 SControl 300)
[ 5.068000]ata2:SATA link down (SSTatus 0 SControl 300)
[ 5.552000]ata3:SATA link up 1.5 Gbps (SStatus 113 SControl 300)
[ 5.864000]ata4:SATA link down (SSTatus 0 SControl 300)

[Code]....

I had a SATA PCI card in my old computer, would adding that to the new system make it work? Is there someway to update the UUID numbers (I think I have done this before).

Debian Installation :: How To Get UUID For Root In Grub CFG

Mar 15, 2015

I am running Wheezy as my main OS in the first drive in my desktop. I use the 2nd drive for data. I am trying to add another OS to multiboot. When I ran grub-update in Wheezy, I am getting device letter for the root device instead of UUID in grub.cfg, in the os-prober section. Like this

Code: Select allsearch --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root 6ee49a8e-a619-49c7-9f66-51a5ca9a48cc
   linux /boot/vmlinuz-316-x86_64 root=/dev/sdb3
   initrd /boot/initramfs-316-x86_64.img

In the same file, UUID was used for the existing kernels.

Code: Select alllinux   /boot/vmlinuz-3.2.0-4-686-pae root=UUID=c2eecf02-d427-4f2e-9fd0-9db61256cbac ro  quiet
   echo   'Loading initial ramdisk ...'
   initrd   /boot/initrd.img-3.2.0-4-686-pae

How can I get UUID instead of /dev/sdb3 for the 2nd OS?

Fedora Installation :: UUID Error While Booting

Apr 3, 2009

I have 2 CPUs Which are Intel and AMD based. I used F9 before and didnt have any issues while I removed the hdd that I'd installed F9 on INTEL based and then put my hdd on my AMD based cpu. Well it booted and ran perfectly no issues came up.And then I've done the upgrade to F10 (clean install on INTEL). I do the same case above. But I got error msgs it said that the UUID cannot be found (I was using label on F9 fstab and worked fine).

I put back my hdd to intel based cpu and then try to edit my fstab and menu.lst (change UUID to LABEL). WOW I thought by changing UUID from fstab and menu.lst would resolve my problem but it doesnt solve anything. My devices (sda1/2/3, /boot, and /home) cannot be reconized.Well do you guys know how to change UUID to LABEL? and what exactly my problem?

Debian Installation :: Why Does 8.2 Change UUID Of Swap Drive

Dec 14, 2015

Been doing some installations in a newly upgraded machine where I'm setting up two instances of 8.2 in slightly different configurations.Installing from netinst AMD64 DVD with firmware non-free. First installation goes smooth as then the second changes the UUID of the swap partition, meaning that the first then can't find it. To add insult to injury the second installation doesn't install GRUB in the MBR of the HDD.

Nothing different or special about the installation which is standard graphical with manual allocation of previously set up partitions. I don't touch the swap drive in the partitioner - just point to the correct partitions for / and /home as I want them. This is exactly as I've done before, many times.Setup asks me if I want to install GRUB in MBR and I answer "No" (because it would otherwise load in MBR of sda where I want it on sdb) then point to sdb in the next screen. Again really nothing different to what I've done dozens of times.
