OpenSUSE :: XFCE Update Applet Authentication?

Dec 7, 2010

Using XFCE with OpenSUSE 11.3. XFCE's Update Applet runs without superuser privileges. It finds updates without problems, but when I try to install them, it reports that it failed to authenticate or something like that. I have to start YaST Online Update module in order to install the updates. Is it possible to enable XFCE Update Applet to prompt for superuser authentication or to directly use YaST Online Update as panel applet, like in KDE?

OpenSUSE :: Kupdate Applet - Make The Update Applet Ignore "recommended" Update?

Mar 24, 2010

My kupdate-applet tells me it has a recommended update: KDE 4.3.5 from the official opensuse update repo. Problem is I already have a more recent version of KDE 4.3.5 installed from the official opensuse KDE repo. In yast I pressed the "switch system packages" button for the KDE repo. How can I make the update applet ignore this "recommended" update? Note that the updateApplet itself is installed from the opensuse update repo. If I don't do this, then the older update applet from the KDE repo always has a recommended update for... Kupdate-applet.

OpenSUSE Install :: Can't See 'Xfce Session' After Update / Fix It?

Dec 28, 2010

I'm a new openSUSE user. Thought of giving some other distros a try, so I started with openSUSE.

I installed the Xfce packages and when I went to go install a panel plugin, it said that it needed to install some other stuff, including an update of xfce4-session to xfdesktop. After I did this, I could no longer see 'Xfce session' in the "Sessions" part of the log-in menu when I tried to log-in again.

What do I need to do to fix this issue?

OpenSUSE :: Update Applet Stopped Working?

Apr 18, 2010

Is it just me or your update applet also stopped working recently? I'm running Factory KDE-4.4.2 and openSUSE-11.2. It's always "Checking for updates..." without finding any, even though I can always see new ones through Yast - Online Update. And sometimes it asks me to accept some key, when I click OK it asks me for a root password but after I type in half of the password it simply disappears and starts "Checking for updates..." again without end.

And YAST doesn't show any newer packages anymore but rather has "Switch system packages" on the top. If I click on that, then it starts showing newer packages and wants to update them all. But what if I want to use Packman's packages for multimedia and Factory KDE for KDE? If I select "Switch system packages" for KDE then it will update, for example, Kaffeine to KDE's but I want to keep it Packman's. If I search for Kaffeine, it shows no newer packages, but if I go to Versions, there's clearly a newer version there!

Ubuntu :: Nm-applet Not Visible In Xfce?

OpenSUSE :: Update Applet - Su / Root Password Always Needed (GNOME)

Apr 30, 2010

I have a minor problem with my "Update Applet 2.28.0" in Gnome. It occurs when I want to make the applet do one or more suggested update(s). It always asks me for the password of superuser/root: "Authenticate : Authentication is required to update packages. [...]". I think under my installation before (11.1 maybe updated from an older version) I could tell the automatic/semi automatic updater to remember the su password (in YaST or in the authentication dialog?).

In the help manual on my computer (and in the internet) there is the possibility to make the updater remember the password via policy kit: ("Access to all privileged operations is controlled via PolicyKit." See: GNOME Documentation Library : gnome-packagekit Manual : Introduction) I could not find any policy kid or any other possibility to give to the automatic updater (or its user) that privilege permanently (=to remember authorization). I think on a system with more (real) users this could be a real problem (not just an inconvenience).

OpenSUSE :: Updater Applet Prompt To Update Packages From Different Repos?

Jan 8, 2011

I'm using openSUSE 11.3 with KDE 4.5.4. The updater applet works fine for me, however I think it only checks for updates from the update repo. I tried to modify this behaviour by right clicking the icon and checking "show available updates, when the backend provides it(for experts)" (translation from polish so it may not be 100% accurate) but the behaviour is the same, it only prompts me when there are updates available in the update repo but I would like it also to prompt me when there are updates available in the packman and KDE stable repo. Is it possible to force the updater applet to do this ?

OpenSUSE :: Stop Packagekit Update Applet Using Command Line?

Jun 22, 2011

I have a few PCs that are used by average joe's and whenever updates are available the update applet apears indicating there are updates. I usually update all these machines at the same time using zypper so in order to remove additional confusion how can I disable this? I've read in the forum how to stop it from starting up by going to Control Center | Startup Applications and unchecking Packagekit Update Applet. Is there a way to do this using the command line? I'm sure there is, after all this is Linux, I just need to know how. Reason being is I'll be ssh'ing into these machines to disable the update applet and don't want to touch all the machines and click my way to stop it at startup. Figure there has to be an easier way

OpenSUSE :: Online Update Applet Running In Order To Be Notified Of Updates?

Sep 8, 2010

In OpenSuSE 11.2 YaST -> Online Update Configuration I can configure how often the system should check for updates (i.e. daily, weekly). Does this operate independently from the Online Update Applet(kupdateapplet)? The reason I ask is that the Applet doesn't always seem to work correctly. However, if the system will check for online updates automatically regardless of the Applet, perhaps this isn't an issue. If I can avoid messing with the Applet, that would be great.

Fedora :: F12 XFCE No Desktop After Update?

Mar 6, 2010

last night I updated F12 XFCE on my Acer Aspire One 8Gb SSD, there were about 140+ issues to update.

after reboot the dialog to select a user and login appeared, continuing nothing shows up -- no menu, no taskbar, no volumes, just the beautiful F12 background.

pressing ALT - F2 I am able to start commands, eg Thunar shows up displaying all volumes, files and even NFS remote drives. my conclusion is that everything works except the desktop...

how I can start the XFCE desktop environment so I can use the GUI?

Debian Configuration :: Jessie 8.2 - GUI Update-manager XFCE Notifier

Jan 1, 2016

Since update-manager was removed from Debian Jessie, I am looking for something similar or a way to install update-manager for 8.2. I would like a GUI.

I have tried gnome-packagekit, but some of the commands don't appear to work or it seems incomplete and I don't know of a way to test to make sure that it is working.

Other sites recommended to use smartpm. However, I cannot seem to find the plugin xfce4-smartpm-plugin in [Xfce Goodies] that would work as a notifier.

Unattended-upgrades does not meet my specifications, because to my knowledge there is no GUI configuration for this.

Though Debian Jessie is a great distro, I am finding it difficult to recommend to some newer users because it does lack a GUI updater/notifier at this time.

Debian :: Update & Package Manager Freeze During Authentication

Sep 12, 2010

I just installed Debian (Stable, 5.0.6) for the first time. I had some troubles related to the installation of network and nvidia drivers, but now the system seems to work pretty well. The only problem i'm having is that when I try to use tools like the graphic update or the graphic packet manager, or the graphic tool for adding/removing software, after I write the password they ask me, they freeze, but still seem keeping loading something, as the cursor usually keeps turning, and, on the lower bar of Gnome, something like "Granting rights..." appears (i've the italian version so i don't know if i'm translating well or not). Sometime they freeze before the request of authentication and then nothing happens, sometime they simply don't start. Also, sometime the update manager starts but freezes when i click on the button that checks for new updates.Maybe it could be useful for you to know that I installed the 2.6.32-bpo.5-amd64 kernel because my network had problems with the 2.6.26-2-amd64, could this be a problem? i also installed the last Nvidia drivers, and i think nothing more, just the system updates from the stable repositories.
