I tried to install SliTaz to my flash drive to save a DVD. When I booted into it, it gave me a unetbootin custom boot screen with a 10 second count down to boot to default- the only option. I hit enter, it resets to 10 seconds, I wait 10 seconds and it still resets to 10 seconds.
View 9 RepliesI've been using a LiveUSB I created using unetbootin from Windows Vista/7.
Whenever I use it to install Ubuntu (done it a few times now) or as a LiveUSB to try and rescue my installation, it never shuts down or reboots. It just starts the cycle then hangs on the white Ubuntu logo. As it never gets past this, I'm forced to hard power off, and I'm concerned this could be damaging my mounted system drives? I've decided I should be unmounting before I try and shut it down now, is there a proper way to do this, and can I fix the LiveUSB itself?
My FC13 install has been corrupted by a ram problem. Now I have broken packages to repair if I want to recover.
My question: if i boot from live cd, will I be able to fix the hard-drive install using yum connected to internet?
I'm trying out some other distros i have fedora, openSUSE, natty (wanna check out gnome3), and debian
i tried to create a pen drive for all separate ones of the using unetbootin' and none worked except natty
i installed image writer which doesn't recognize any of my iso's when i browse my filesystem the folder they're in is just empty
i've tried the multicd.sh script to create a multiboot dvd so i don't have to create 5 different cds but when i execute it it just lists memtest where its supposed to list all the .iso's in the folder (yes i renamed them all simple as per instructions...
and then the multibootusb which only recognized openSUSE and when it was done i couldn't boot off it
my pendrive only works at booting for ubuntu?
do i have to write 5 cd's just to experiment

I recently installed Damn Small Linux using unetbootin. Booting Linux from unetbootin seems a lot like booting from a liveCD, so I'd like to mount my hard drive and see what I can do. Unfortunately it looks like Damn Small Linux has not mounted it automatically, and I'm having trouble finding my drive and mounting it from the /dev directory. There are several devices named /dev/*da* and I don't know which is my hard drive. My computer is an HP Mini netbook, so the drive is probably one of the new "solid state" drives if that affects anything.What can I do to find and mount my hard drive from unetbootin?
View 3 Replies View Relatedi have a Sandisk 5gig USB key that had mint 9 live on it that i was hoping to get an old brotasaurus (Dell Latitude D510) up and running again with. apparently Mint is too pretty for the beast and so I tried to get mint Fluxbox to install on to the key, then i tried Fedora, and finaly i tried DSL. Unetbootin seems to have stoped making the key bootable as three of my laps seem unable to read it.
[Update] so i tried dd'ing the iso to the usb following the instructions on the suse site
# umount /dev/sdb1

After finally getting Ubuntu 10.04 installed (with a few disasters along the way) I sought to recreate a shell script for backing up critical files that I had been using with 9.04. The destination for the files was /media/disk (with "disk" being the name that I had given to the USB flash drives in the past with 9.04.).
One drive mounted perfectly, and the shell script ran as it normally should. However, two other drives gave "file or directory not found" error messages and no files were copied. One of the drives lists its name as a very forbidding
"/media/5d588180-19eb-4656-8677-b652c4ed0003.
I attempted to re-name it to "disk", using e2label after un-mounting it, but that did not work? If I run the shell script on several different USB flash drives that I alternate, they must all have the same name.
My DVD drive has gone bad and with new Fedora 14 just launched I decided to install the same through the usb flash disk.
First I used dd: dd if=/home/prabhat/Download/Fedora-14-i386.iso of=/dev/sdb
It went on nicely and copied the iso nicely. But I could not boot with it.
Second time I tried livecd-tools: livecd-iso-to-disk /home/prabhat/Download/Fedora-14-i386.iso /dev/sdb1
It went on nicely, and finally declared something like - usb disk is not live .... But here again when I tried to boot it says MISSING OS. I checked the contents of the flash disk. It contained raw DVD iso image, one images directory, one syslinux directory. I checked the contents of the images directory, and I found it had the install.img. And yes, the /dev/sdb1 is bootable.
I made a persistent install of Ubuntu on a flash drive. I made changes to that installation. The software (Unetboontin) sets this all up. I think it partitions it for you. How do I image that flash drive to another flash drive?
View 9 Replies View RelatedMy boyfriend has an old IBM Thinkpad that he said I can use to install Ubuntu on and use it as a 2nd computer. Here's the problem, the computer doesn't have a CD drive, but does have USB. I've been trying to get a bootable USB drive created, but with no luck.
The USB drive is 2GB. Which Ubuntu would fit on here? The Thinkpad has a 20GB hard drive, and about 512MB memory. The processor I think is a Pentium III. I've even tried installing Ubuntu through the wubi.exe file, but it won't load. The current OS is a Japanese Windows 98. Do I need a bigger flash drive? The netbook remix version? or something else?
I installed Windows XP on my system using QEMU as a 2GB virtual drive in my home directory. I don't want to have it anymore, however I can't get rid of this 2GB used space with windows XP. I can't even delete QEMU, because the command sudo apt-get remove qemu tells me that package qemu is not installed. (however it is there, works, and is able to start Windows XP as usual).
How can I get rid of this qemu/Win XP and have 2GB of my home folder available again?
i have newlly creatde g drive ntfs formatted so can i install f14 in that partiotion if yes than how ? means which option i need to select when the screen appears which shows select parttion [use free space , replace existing partion and all]

View 3 Replies View RelatedBack in Febuary, my wife bought a Toshiba Satilite from Wal-Mart and a few days ago the hard drive got toasted. So now I'm using an 8gig usb drive as the boot drive. I also have 2 other flash drives for downloads and such but overall I am very pleased.
I'm running 11.04 32 bit and was wandering if 64 bit made a difference. I've got 4 gigs of ddr3. It's slow to boot, but once it's running, it's faster then Windows 7. Very nice.
Is there anything I should chage, use, since I'm running it off a flash drive??

I bought an 8GB flash drive because my D drive doesn't read DVDs. Anyway, my goal is to install Linux ubuntu and have it be my OS (replacing Windows XP). Last night I went to the Ubuntu homepage and downloaded the Ubuntu desktop edition 32-bit and put it on my flash drive. I followed the instructions on how to open and run it, but I was never asked about whether I want Linux to run side by side with Windows or if I want it to replace Windows. It downloaded the whole program, my computer restarted and then (on a black screen) it asked if I wanted to use Windows XP Home Edition or Linux Ubuntu. It's really frustrating because it took a while to download and install it in the first place AND to top that off, when I tried to use Ubuntu it went to a black screen and at the top said that there was an error. So I uninstalled all the ubuntu program and software and now I have a clean slate and want to try this again. I am a complete n00b. Could someone please walk me through how I can go about downloading (w/ links plz), installing and making ubuntu my ONLY OS on my computer via a flash drive? I'm desperate and I don't want to go through all of that and make the same mistake again!

Anyone succesfully created a bootable usb with ubuntu 10.04 using Unetbootin? I already have the .iso file and an 8GB flash drive but everytime i try to use unetbootin, it says installation is complete and my flash drive is ready to use (all this took only 5 secs! weird!). And when i open my flash drive, nothing is there and the used space is 80KB...its really empty

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a 4 gig Kingston USB stick. I have an Eee PC with 4 gig internal flash drive (no hard drive). I can't find the specs but I believe it is roughly equivalent to an Eee PC 900 or something.
About a year ago I downloaded the then latest version of ubuntu for netbooks, created a bootable USB drive from my Mac, as per the instructions at:url
or whatever the equivalent site was then. It booted fine, it installed fine and everything was great.
Eventually the tiny flash drive in my EeePC got full. I couldn't upgrade to the new 9.10 distro through auto updates because there wasn't enough room to download them.
I tried to delete some old kernels and then delete some other stuff. I broke my linux installation and now it won't boot to a desktop. I can get a login prompt and I can boot to the fail safe terminal but not much else.
So, I tried repeating the steps above.
I downloaded the NEW version of ubuntu netbook remix from:url
I followed the instructions for making a bootable USB stick from the first link above. I used the EXACT SAME USB stick as last time (in fact, it still had the older version of the ubuntu install files on it).
There were no errors "creating" the USB drive and it can be mounted on my Mac and I can see the files are on it.
I stuck it into my EeePC and rebooted and hit the ESC key and selected the Kingston USB drive to boot from. The light on the USB drive flashed some, then the internal flash drive light flashed some and the EeePC booted from the internal drive.
I rebooted and went into the bios settings and made triple sure that it was set to boot from USB drive first and rebooted. The same thing happened (it "looked at" the USB drive, then booted from the internal drive).
I repeated the above a dozen times. I REinstalled the ubuntu files on the USB drive from my Mac. I repeated. Still the same.
I redownloaded the ubuntu files and did everything from scratch. Again no errors "creating" the USB drive and it can be mounted on my Mac and I can see the files are on it, but again, it is absolutely useless because it is unbootable.
I tried booting my Mac from the USB drive and my Mac didn't recognize it as a bootable drive either.
I found another 4 gig USB drive and repeated the steps above with it. It was exactly the same: no errors creating it, the drive is mountable on my Mac, but it is completely unbootable.
I am at a loss to find any info on this nor do I have any idea what to try next. I KNOW this worked with the first USB drive last year (with an earlier version of ubuntu). What could possibly have changed?
After realizing 10.04 Final doesn't support Intel 855 graphics card the hard way (upgrading to 10.04 from 9.10), I did some very silly things and now cannot even choose past kernals or go into failsafe graphics mode (which had worked prior to this).Long story short I screwed up GRUB. Because I am an amateur end user.I still have the 10.04 live cd. Can I reinstall this to put GRUB back to the original state?

I was thinking of attempting to fix it later on this week and am thinking of doing a chroot and updating via a live CD hoping that an even newer update solves the problem but I have some doubts of success. Does anyone have any information about this issue so that I can be better prepared to fix it? Also, I thought I should mention that I tried the second newest kernel to see if that would make it work. It didn't. The error is something along the lines of having the /dev/diskuuid change. If I'm correct, Ubuntu changed the disk's name and is trying to boot the old name. It's dropping to an initramfs shell (not the regular terminal where you can work miracles ).

I've just reported a launchpad bug report about my desktop system being unbootable after upgrade to lucid lynx. [URL]... I opened this thread to ask if someone else experienced a similar problem and for collecting information and workarounds (none yet) about this quite serius problem. The system has an nvidia graphic card and proprietary drivers were installed before the upgrade. However I'm not sure the problem is related to this. FYI, the system booted regularly from a usb stick with ubuntu lucid lynx. SO the problem is in the upgrade path.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI tried running an upgrade from 8.04 LTS to 10.4 last night, and things seemed to be going smoothly. The upgrade progress was nearly complete, and I wandered off for a while to let it run. When I came back, I had nothing but an orange screen and and unresponsive system. I left it alone all night with the hopes that something would happen, but this morning nothing had changed so I hard restarted the system.
Ubuntu 10.4 appears in GRUB, but the system cannot boot and exits with a kernel panic and the message "vfs unable to mount root fs on unknown-block" I was able to boot to a 10.4 LiveCD, and I can browse all of my files from there. What can I do to get this system back up an running? I have dozens of user account and a lot of customization (it acts as a webserver with a wiki for a gaming website running on it, among other things), so I really really don't want to do a fresh install and lose all my data and customizations.
