We have about four workstations and a server. What we need is authenticating with the server, and when you log on, you should see your own desktip and documents idnependent on which workstation you use. Could this be solved by placing the user's home on a server share?We also need a server share accessible from both Linux, Windows an Mac, readable and writeable, as some prefers to bring their laptops to the office.I've read a little bit about terminal servers, but using the workstations as thin clients sounds like a waste, as they're just as powerful as the server. i have purchased sun server for my visualization project. Request you to help me finding the io for disk .I have put storage(disks) on different location (File Server) and on server (Application) i have configured 4 virtual machines.
How would i monitor the io for file server from the Application server where i have configured 4 virtual machine. one way to mount the file server share on application server and execute
dd if=/dev/zero of=/share/test.out bs=1024 count=1024 to check the read and write Is there any other way of doing this.

I have a chrooted account setup for my ssh server. However, I am trying to allow this user read only access to access on a mounted hard-drive and more specifically a specific folder from that mounted drive. I would also like to have this drive be mounted for me in my normal environment with write access.

We recently had an issue with "cat /proc/mount" telling us that a CIFS file system was mounted, even though the mount was not working correctly. So we're not sure if we can trust linux to report malfunctioning mounts, so we're planning on adding a specific file on the mounted file system, and verify the mount by reading this file from the client side (linux). If linux fails to read it, we know that the mount have failed. But before we go ahead doing this I thought I'd just hear how others are doing this sort of thing - how do you make sure that mount points are up and working?

My Pug Server has worked faithfully for many years just sitting in a closet. It is designed wo that you never need to add a monitor or keyboard as it is administered through a web interface. Recently it had a problem with the motherboard and I had to replace it, but the machine is now working. However, it no longer is visible as a network drive on my Windows machine.Unfortunately I have no idea where to start looking to see what the problem is. I did attach a keyboard and monitor and logged on, but everything looks okay (I can see my files, etc.).
This is an old machine (c. 2003), so has an old version of Linux (I have no idea what version, or even how to find out). Since it is never meant to be used directly it doesn't have any GUI installed, so I have to do everything using command line.Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can even start to determine what the problem is or how I can go about trying to fix it? At this point I would be happy just to get the files out and replace it with a newer NAS.

Perty self explanitory, I'm trying to boot up ubunto server edition 10.10 from a USB stick (pen drive) and it works fine until step 3 when it says "Your installation CD-ROM couldn't be mounted. This probably means that the CD-ROM was not put in the drive. If so you can insert it and try again

I don't have an installation cd-rom! I put the .iso file onto a memory stick, inserted it into my old computer (which i will turn into a server later) , restarted it and got past the first two slides and got this error? Do I have to put the iso on a cd-rom?

I have problems with nfs. There is an old legato cluster Automated Availability Manager on Linux. And lately we noticed problem with nfs
in the logs there are still entries:
I tried to add more threads in /etc/sysconfig/nfs but it didn't help.
And on one node there is info regarding double mounted filesystems with df -h command. Why? In /etc/fstab is only one entry.

I'm trying to replace an office file server. I would like to avoid just another samba share.
I'm looking for a document repository, a bit more functionality than a plain samba share and very cross-platform.
I've looked a couple minutes at dspace, but that seems like a lot of work just configuring it. Dropbox would be fine except that they only have up to 100g, and it's off-site.
This is NOT for unauthenticated public use.
Here are some features I have in mind:
1. Web front end.
2. Any file format from a one-line text document to a Microsoft Word document to an ISO of a blu-ray disk to a very large database backup, binary or text.
3. Cross-platform clients, mostly Mac.
4. Authenticated via centralized one-login server or maybe by a key such as an SSH public key.
5. Searchable by terms, name or content if the type is appropriate.
6. Pass in the URL for an object and have the server download it.
7. Stores files in native format so if the app breaks I can just get the files.

I observed a problem with the Yahoo Mail Attachments.If I want to attach a file from a drive that's mounted (one of my windows partitions), the file who I attach to mail seems attached but after I send the mail the recipients do not receive my file. First I thought it was a mistake, but then it happened several times. Does anyone know any workarounds except copying the files who you want to send to an Linux drive and then sending it from that location?

iam trying to sync file server data into backup server machine by command- rsync -avu path/of/data ipaddress-of-backup-server:/path/where/to/save after running it ask for root password and manually it is successful.but i want to make it automatic.for that i also tried cronjob and also generated authentication key but iam not successful in login automatically..anybody know how to authenticate root to login for storing data in backup server.

We recently shifted our applcation and database to LINUX from UNIX.so now application server(weblogic 8.1) is on linux and oracle database 9i is on linux.previously there is a process in application server(which access the Database dor the data) which took only 1 hour to run on UNIX after shifting to LINUX the same process is taking 4 to 5 hours to run.
but when individually ran the queries on the database it is quck than UNIX.our ADMIN tried changing the kernel parameters for the database server, but it is still the same.

I have a videos server here at work running Mandriva 2009 Spring and I need to copy a 10 gig file from it to a USB drive. The drive needs to be readable and writable from Windows. The file size rules out FAT, and when I try to write to it when formatted as NTFS I get an error about it being a read-only file system. How can I get NTFS support up and running?

I have been using a self signed certificate on my ubuntu server 10.4, using Apache.Today I bought a certificate from optimumssl. I created the csr and copied the key to the /etc/ssl/private as before. I then copied the newly supplied certificate to /etc/ssl/certs as before and changed my /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/domainname to pint to the correct certificate name.I now can't start Apache as I have this error below[error] SSL Library Error: 185073780 error:0B080074:x509 certificate routines:X509_check_private_key:key values mismatch

i configured ftp in my server.i just want to access the web page created in server through ftp.ya i can able to access. but the problem is ,it,s showing all the files and folders of the server like Desktop,Documents etc.....
But its just need to show only the site files such as index.html and its sub folders.
i think the problem is because of logging in to the server through ftp as normal user,which is created in server. so i think if we login as ftp user we can able to access only the website files.
how to create ftp users.

I've installed, overwrote, and deleted the partion with US to install again.Each time I could'nt login.I used 2 versions, 9.10 + 8.10. It can't be the login info, but the problem is probably that I hadn't installed any packages, e.g. Mail or Fileserver.Could the HDD not be mounted? I'll attach a GParted screenshot.

Currently have access to a VPS where we are running a small game server on ubuntu - the problem is that it is a multi-user environment, so when one person restarts the server process, all files it creates are owned by that users name and group. I have created a group called 'game' and added both users to it, but I need to know how to make all files in the game server's directory to be r/w/x for the group 'game'. Currently, I have a script that chowns and chmods all files recursively on startup, but I'd prefer not having to do this.

i have created an folder inside my redhat server. and i shared it via samba and mapped that shared folders inside 5 windows machine. now the problem i am facing is, if any one create a file in that mapped drive the other user cant edit that same file. but he can read it. only for files not folders.
i gave full permission to that folders and subfolders and in smb file i gave readable writable browsable permissions. and i disabled se linux and firewall

I'm testing a Debian Lenny virtual machine to simulate my ideal setup for FTP server (with vsftpd): I want all internal users (corporation users with Active Directory accounts) to ftp into the same directory (i.e. /var/FTP/AD-DOMAIN/) and external users (customers) to ftp into their home directories (created manually on request).
I added user_config_dir=/etc/vsftpd_user_conf option in /etc/vsftpd.conf file and I've created /etc/vsftpd_user_conf/domain-user1 with local_root=/var/FTP/AD-DOMAIN
I have setup vsftp so I can ftp with every external and internal user chrooted and is working properly. AD validation for internal users and "normal" validation (via /etc/passwd) for external users work perfect.
I can FTP this server into /var/FTP/AD-DOMAIN with any AD user with its home directory created (i.e. /home/AD-DOMAIN/domain-user1/) but if I try to ftp with any AD user without its home directory created I get the error "500 OOPS: cannot change directory:/home/AD-DOMAIN/domain-user2"
I have found some references (http://wiki.flexion.org/FtpServer.html and http://howto.gumph.org/content/setup...ies-in-vsftpd/) about vsftp PAM authentication so I would supposedly get rid of the error message and the user would log into /var/FTP/AD-DOMAIN without problems, but I can't figure out how to setup my FTP server.
