My boyfriend has an old IBM Thinkpad that he said I can use to install Ubuntu on and use it as a 2nd computer. Here's the problem, the computer doesn't have a CD drive, but does have USB. I've been trying to get a bootable USB drive created, but with no luck.
The USB drive is 2GB. Which Ubuntu would fit on here? The Thinkpad has a 20GB hard drive, and about 512MB memory. The processor I think is a Pentium III. I've even tried installing Ubuntu through the wubi.exe file, but it won't load. The current OS is a Japanese Windows 98. Do I need a bigger flash drive? The netbook remix version? or something else?
If I dd copy a bootable usb drive to an iso will the iso be bootable?
I haven't tried it yet, but i'm going to. Heres the situation and tell me if I'm crazy.
I have several bootable CDs I use at work to do different things, so I went ahead and made a multi-boot usb stick with the isos on them and everything is golden. When i need something else, I am able to slap the ISO on the usb stick, edit the menu.lst and I'm good to go.
The problem is, for some of our equipment I have a bootable USB stick that I have to use. I tried copying the files on the bootable USB to my multi-boot usb and setup grub to boot it (which admittedly I'm no expert at), but have had no luck.
So now I'm thinking, I'll use dd to copy the bootable USB stick to an iso (using bs=2048) and then do my normal setup with an ISO and maybe it will work.
I just booted one of my computers from a usb drive I had installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS to, and when I booted it up on that computer, it worked fine. Then, when I powered down the computer and booted it back up to the main hard drive, it booted to the same that my flash drive was running, but my flash drive was not plugged in!! How is this possible? Did it copy itself over my other operating system? There is no trace of it. By the way, that, too, was ubuntu 10.04.
I installed Windows XP on my system using QEMU as a 2GB virtual drive in my home directory. I don't want to have it anymore, however I can't get rid of this 2GB used space with windows XP. I can't even delete QEMU, because the command sudo apt-get remove qemu tells me that package qemu is not installed. (however it is there, works, and is able to start Windows XP as usual).
How can I get rid of this qemu/Win XP and have 2GB of my home folder available again?
I tried to install SliTaz to my flash drive to save a DVD. When I booted into it, it gave me a unetbootin custom boot screen with a 10 second count down to boot to default- the only option. I hit enter, it resets to 10 seconds, I wait 10 seconds and it still resets to 10 seconds.

My karmic ubuntu studio will no longer boot. I believe I may have intermittent hard drive issues. I've backed up all my important files so I'm not extremely worried; however, I would like to try to get my setup bootable once more. I've reinstalled grub, and on trying to boot, I get the grub kernel selection. Regardless of what I choose, the system won't boot. I believe grub is alright, but something else is not. What else could I try to make it boot again? I've mounted the drive, chrooted to it, updated and upgraded, but it still won't boot. I may be doing that wrong, or there may be something else I need to do.
I am trying to install ubuntu 10.04 on my 1 tb my passport drive and am having loads of trouble. i am unsure how to format the frees space for the boot loader and main drive. I am trying to install ubuntu netbook remix on acer aspire one netbook. I used the usb-creator.exe tool to make bootable usb drive. When I boot from the usb drive it comes up to the boot options screen. But when I try to either install or run ubuntu from disk it goes to a black screen and stops or goes to a page long error message saying "cannot mount drive" and a list of command options. I also am not sure if setup gives you the option to reformat the hard drive. Or if this has to be done prior to booting from ubuntu usb-disk.
I would like to install Windows XP on my netbook after some annoying issues. I haven't been able to find any solutions to this problem on Linux based systems after hours and hours and hours of surfing the Google. A lot of people say 'well use the usb startup disk creator!' I wanted to back up my 4Gb boot drive and the new drive I had was slightly smaller. Couldn't find any info on here and precious little on the internet but I have previously used this technique to clone an 8Gb disk onto a 4Gb one. Since I have gained a lot of useful info from this forum over the years its probably time I contributed something. I used my netbook but this would work equally well from a live CD. Note the disk has to be unmounted so you can't use the live system. Firstly your USB stick probably has 2 partitions one for "/" and one for swap.
The first step is to reduce the "/" partition on the source drive to a size smaller than your target drive. I used gparted for this. Next create a partition on your target drive that is the same size or bigger than your newly shrunken partition. I formatted this although I'm not sure this is necessary. Personally I just used the whole drive and used a file on a hard disk as swap. Next you have to use dd to copy the partition.What is important is that you are copying the partition not the drive. So your source would be /dev/sdx1 and target /dev/sdy1 (you will need to find your own values for x&y).
Once again be very careful that you get these the right way around or you will destroy your souce disk. Even better do it in two stages - copy your source to a file and then the file to the target. Now you have a replica of your original disk but it is not bootable. If you are planning to use a swap partition you may as well create it now. Remember you will probably have to change /etc/fstab to read the new swap - at least on my system this was referenced by UUID. No need to change anything for the replicated partition as the UUID came over with everything else.

Is it possible to install CentOS 5.4 on a USB Flash Drive to boot from or even a LiveCD? I know with OpenSUSE 11.2 there is a LiveCD version and Ubuntu can be booted this way.
I am trying to boot from an external hard drive, and have tried to use unetbootin like I used when crating a bootable usb drive but it does not see my external and will not create bootbale iso for me to run from my external hard drive.

I am trying to set-up one that will NOT only boot and work as a live install, but will also allow me to install on the host machine right from the working USB Flash drive, if I choose to do so.
I would like to install F12 to a bootable USB device from a working Fedora partition other than the liveUSB-creator option. Is there a way to do that from a working Fedora machine without have to burn a DVD? Seems like there should be but I can't find a guide for it.

I work in a computer service center and it'll be very helpful (I think) to have bootable USB Flash dive with operating system to log into dead operating system partitions.
