Ubuntu :: Unable To Recognize Blank Dvd
Jan 18, 2010
I can write to CD+R no problem but when I try to write to DVD it does not work. When I put the DVD in the drive and go to computer and click open I get a message " unable to mount location, no media in drive." If I have a blank CD+R it says blank CD in drive but with the DVD I am having problems. I have way to many family pictures and I'd like to put it on 2 DVDs instead of 12 CD+Rs.

i have severe problem with my Thinkpad R500 - it simple doesnt recognize/wont mount any blank/empty dvd.1) First, it is not hardware Problem: DVD Burner read all formats, and works good under Windows.2) it is not CD/DVD Format issue- i tested Fuji, Platinum, Sony, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R...3) it has nothing to do with brasero. I tested k3b, gnomebaker, nautilu-cd-burner and some other problems. So, this Issue make my dvd burner useless...Does anyone knows if this problem is solved, or what bug should i report?

I have been trying to connect my TV to my ubuntu desktop for a while now. When i start up, the image from the desktop is shown fine on the TV right up until the ubuntu startup image. At that point the image disappears and doesnt return.GRUB and all the startup text is shown fine on the TV but after ubuntu starts, the tv just says "no signal".
Im using a ATI Radeon X800 "Old crap" craphics card. I assume it is because my graphics card does not have the drivers for it installed properly, so i tried that through the package manager along with the catalyst control center. When i tried to open catalyst it gives the message "There was a problem initializing Catalyst Control Center linux edition. It could be caused by the following No ATI graphics driver is installed or the ATI driver is not functioning properly install the ATI driver appropriate for your ATI hardware, or configure using ATI config" When calling aticonfig from the terminal, it says No supported adapters detected.the tv does not appear in displays either. My Medion 17' screen is properly identified in Display though (It does not say unknown or anything)

I installed Kubuntu 9.10 using wubi (dualboot with Windows 7). There were no network connections available, even though I have two that can be used when I switch to Windows. After two hours I got tired of trying to fix the problem and rebooting to no avail, so i uninstalled and installed Ubuntu instead. I've still got the same problem, and after hitting a hole in my wall and shaving my head, I have no idea how to fix the problem. How do i get Ubuntu to recognize my wireless network?

W: Failed to mount '/dev/sr0' to '/media/apt/'
E: Unable to change to /media/apt/ - chdir (2: No such file or directory) Is there another code to recognize the cdrom? because the help of the command and options list didn't give a code for recognizing the cdrom. Im using ubuntu 10.4lts on my netbook and yes i do have a external rom

I have installed the LG BE08LU20 on five Centos servers during the past three months. Two HP ML115, two Dell T110 and mine which is an older Dell Dimension. All except one of the Dell T110 work fine. The BE08LU20 drive is used for 50Gb backups using mondoarchive. On the problem machine which has just been installed from scratch again, it will quite happily mount cd and dvds but not 50Gb BD-RE. I take the same BD-RE disk which it objects to and load it on my identical be08lu20 on a Dell Dimension with Centos 5.5 and it is recognized and allows writing. I swapped my working drive for the problem one but it makes no difference. The 'faulty' drive works perfectly correctly on mine. The OS is Centos 5.5 I have used the same DVD to install three machines with it. Two work including mine, but not the T110. Another customer with T110 also has a be08lu20 and mondoarchive with bd-re disks and theirs worked from the start. They have Centos 5.3 and up-to-date patches, but it should make no difference I've tried both usb and e-sata the result is the same. The centos 5.5 has kernel 2.6.18.194-el5PAE
If I load a bd-re disk in the drive and mount it - this is what I get
[root@localhost log]# mount /dev/scd0 /mnt/cdrom
mount: you must specify the filesystem type
This is the log
Aug 25 00:33:17 gilmartin1 kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 2096896
Aug 25 00:33:17 gilmartin1 kernel: Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 524224
[Code]...
There was another problem with this particular machine. I could install Centos, configure Samba and join the users to the domain without a hiccup. Then in the small hours of the morning (not always the same time) it just locked up, no kbd, no mouse, no display, no disk active, no network. Only solution was switch off and it would come up again quite happily with nothing logged and run without a problem for another 20-24 hours. Dell eventually agreed to replace the motherboard. I installed Centos again from scratch. It's been fine all week. The blu-ray problem has been there from the start, and has NOT been solved by the new motherboard.

I am unable to obtain a blank CD-R to burn the ISO. I have it installed through WUBI but due to the size restriction to 30Gig it makes it completely useless to me. I gave my CD away that I got free from shipit and they wont let me get a new one. I have an external HD formatted to NTFS with files on it that I can't lose, they are very important. I might buy a disk later but right now my funds are tight due to bills and such. I use Ubuntu more than Windows, actually Windows is pretty much never used on this machine and due to issues with it I am unable to use it.

So the title pretty much sums it up. She is running a pangolin performance which came with lucid while I am running a pangolin performance which came with karmic and i upgraded to lucid (bought before her). For some reason hulu always worked for me, so I was trying to fix it on her computer too, but somehow one of the commands I told her to run made her computer not be able to recognize that her built in webcam exists anymore.
The reason that this is so hard is that I don't remember which commands I told her to run, but one of them was the instructions from post #5 on this page: [URL]. But I don't know how messing with flash stuff could have possibly screwed up her computer detecting her webcam. The drivers are definitely installed for webcam, however when she 'locate uvcvideo' it tells her that permission is denied, so the problem might be that her computer isn't giving her the permission to access the webcam drivers to use the webcam, just an idea.

I've tried to run a Clonezilla VM using vmplayer. All works fine except when I get to the cloning section. I have three partitions on the HD; partition A, B and C.
A = Partition to clone
B = Partiton onto which the clone image of PartA is to be saved
C = OS partition which is running the Clonezilla VM.
I would like to save the partition as an image but when it actually comes to the nitty gritty of partition cloning Clonezilla does not recognise PartA or PartB. I get error massages along the lines of "No unmounted partitions found." When I drop into a shell prompt the fdisk -l output shows nothing. However, running from the liveCD it recognises both these along with PartC. Is there a way of carrying out the cloning using this method by tweaking vmplayer settings or is the project just not possible ?

Returned later to a blank screen.....unable to wake the machine....no disk activity Now have some function via a live CD......any thoughts on how I can proceed from here? I would like to persevere with the 'upgrade' route, as a fresh install will result in much loss of files

have made VLC my only audio player, and while it does lodge itself in the right-hand corner of the taskbar (and displays the song title) I find it quite irritating to have to right click then scroll up to skip songs etc. I did a random Google search and came across an old program called Music Applet, which is now under development by the Panflute community. After a full night and half of this afternoon downloading various libraries, I finally managed to ./configure, make, and make install. However, now that it seems to be finished (oh, BTW, for some reason I was unable to "install," it wouldn't recognize the command, so I went directly from "make" to "make install," not sure if that's affecting this or not) I can't seem to figure out how to add Panflute to my panel. My ls in panflute-0.6.2 reads:

When i use my computer (whether it's going online, typing, playing a flash game, or coding) I get these "Black Flashes" that are becoming longer and more frequent. A "Black Flash" is when my computer screen turns blank (but you can still see the backlight) and i have to press the NUMpad ENTER button, shake my mouse furiously, or click my mouse, which sometimes causes undesired actions, but gets me my screen back. sometimes the Black Flashes last a milisecond or 5 seconds or i have to hold the power button and restart because it won't come back on.

Ubuntu Karmic Koala

I am having the same problem, as soon as X tries to load my screen just goes blank. I have an ATI Radeon 9550. At first I tried switching between VGA and DVI as well but upon ruling that out, I switch to my on-board video card and that is working thus far, but I'm trying very hard to figure out a way to be able to switch back. Anyways I'll check back in later on if I have any new information I will post.

I understand that RAM capabilities is mainly based on your mobo, but lets say the mobo can handle 32gigs (Exaggerating here). I'm currently running 2 gigs on my current system, and am thinking about bumping it up to maybe 4, 5, or even 6... I know my system can handle more than 2 (which is why I'm doing this, and I'm trying to do high RAM tasking things) so how much RAM can ubuntu 11.04 64 bit OS handle, recognize, and use to potential? I've googled it plenty of times, but I'm only coming up with people saying "oh it's whatever your mobo is capable of," which is true, but I want to know if there is like a pre-determined limit that 11.04 64 bit OS will only use if installed.
Like how some 32 bit OS will only use lets say 3.0-3.5 gigs of an installed 4 gigs. I don't want to go out of my way and spend money on a few extra gigs if my system will only recognize a portion of it. I know my 64 bit will recognize whatever I'm willing to pay (which won't be too much more ) but I'm just curious.

I'm trying to restore my laptop through the Ubuntu 10.04 Live CD. A while ago, Windows 7 died. I've tried everything possible to make it work again to no avail. At first I gave up on recovering my files and proceeded to formatting it, but that didn't work either, although it would boot from the CD, it would get stuck. It's as if the HDD couldn't be accessed.
After trying almost every version of Windows available, I decided to give Ubuntu a shot. I have used Ubuntu before and I thought maybe I could use the Live CD to see whether I could access the HD or not and, if not, claim the warranty (I bought the computer 4 months ago). I downloaded Ubuntu 10.04 and booted from it and was able to access all my files.
I wanted to move my files to an external HDD through the USB, but I plugged it in and nothing happened, no icon appeared on the desktop or on the Computer directory. I plugged in a normal USB flash drive, and no icon appeared. The funny thing is that the USB led lit up, so I knew it was connected to the computer.
I thought maybe Ubuntu wasn't mounting the drives and that I had to do it manually, so I ran both the lsusb and fdisk -l commands on the terminal with both drives plugged in and neither of them appeared listed. I even opened the message log to see if there was some reaction when I plugged it in, but nothing worked. :S
I restarted the computer and opened the BIOS to see whether the USB drive was enabled, as I had previously disabled some options trying to restore Windows, but the external HDD was being recognized by the computer; on the boot list it showed the name and serial of the drive, so that wasn't it.
I downloaded previous versions of Ubuntu, thinking maybe it had something to do with that (although I know it shouldn't), and the same thing happened: I could access the internal HDD but the external drives weren't being recognized.
I've browsed through the forums, going over the same procedures as other people with the same problem, but nothing works for me and now that I know that my files are safe, I don't want to format it anymore before saving at least the most important ones ><
I think I have 2 options before I run out of ideas. I could use GParted or Partition Editor from the Live CD to resize the partition to make enough space to install Ubuntu on my computer (I was thinking of doing it, anyway) and then fix everything from there instead of from the Live CD (if that changes anything), but I'm afraid that the files in the partition could become corrupted or damaged, and I don't want that. The other option would be to install Ubuntu on the external HDD and boot from it, as it WOULD HAVE to recognize it.
I want to know if there is any way to solve it before resorting to the latter option, as the HDD is not mine and I don't feel right partitioning it.

I had a motherboard 'POP' and die. I replaced it, the CPU, and ram along with a new PS. Then the IDE CDROM always read 'zero' for any media placed in it, so I bought a new USB DVD/CD do-all drive (LG G0 The system was desktop Dual (sic) Boot with WinXP. The XP would boot from the GRUB, but no Ubuntu. I used >find /vmlinuz and got H0,6, right where it always was. But I could not get it to boot
So I reformatted the IDE with Winxp (all my good stuff is on a SATA drive that I left out of all this )) unplugged. The Live CD wouldn't find the IDE hard Drive XP had just installed on- same as BEFORE I reformatted it. I tried all the distros I have (Puppy through Slackware, Suse, Sabayon, etc) .
Nothing could find the IDE drive. I flashed BIOS on the new MB-no help. I put Linux on a Flash drive and booted from there- no help No Partitioner can SEE the IDE...but XP runs on the IDE C:/ just fine (ntfs for C:, with 70GB unpartitioned, waiting for Linux) I am at a loss.
As far as I know, if the BIOS sees the IDE, and XP can run on it, the IDE HD is THERE and working. Yet no Linux can see the IDE HD, XP partition, blank partition, NOTHING. even dmesg shows no IDE The boot text shows no IDE in linux, right after the BIOS lists it correctly while booting.
