I get this when trying to launch a VB after making one with wizzard.
Observed on two host systems both with openSUSE 11.3 32 bit using ext4: When a big files, in this case a 1.2 GB and a 1.7 GB is copied from DVD, usb harddrive or shared folder into a Windows 7 32 bit guest system, the copied file is corrupted. The md5sum has changed and until the guest system has been rebooted successive md5sum tests on the same file comes up with various results... After a reboot md5sum tests show consistent results, but a sum different from the original file.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI was trying to install VirtualBox through the YaST > Software Management but it is not working, someone in the forum told me that I have to download the OSE version and do it manual way. Finally I am able to start up VB but not able to use the network connection. Thus I am trying to do this:
/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup. I get this error:

When I type dmesg, it shows me a bunch of info which I don't know what should look for. When I type modprobe vboxnetflt, I get the error: FATAL: Error inserting vboxnetflt (/lib/modules/2.6.37.1-1.2-default/updates/vboxnetflt.ko): Invalid module format. what should I do in order to get my VB to be able to connect to the internet?
I just installed 10.4. I had a USB HDD that contained an old (8.04) version. I wanted to format the old drive. But whenI plugged it in UBUNTU won't recognize the drive. It's like there was not USB drive I know the connection works cause it works on Windows (XP Pro)with the same enclosure.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI understand that RAM capabilities is mainly based on your mobo, but lets say the mobo can handle 32gigs (Exaggerating here). I'm currently running 2 gigs on my current system, and am thinking about bumping it up to maybe 4, 5, or even 6... I know my system can handle more than 2 (which is why I'm doing this, and I'm trying to do high RAM tasking things) so how much RAM can ubuntu 11.04 64 bit OS handle, recognize, and use to potential? I've googled it plenty of times, but I'm only coming up with people saying "oh it's whatever your mobo is capable of," which is true, but I want to know if there is like a pre-determined limit that 11.04 64 bit OS will only use if installed.
Like how some 32 bit OS will only use lets say 3.0-3.5 gigs of an installed 4 gigs. I don't want to go out of my way and spend money on a few extra gigs if my system will only recognize a portion of it. I know my 64 bit will recognize whatever I'm willing to pay (which won't be too much more ) but I'm just curious.
When everything was working fine, when I inserted the usb or disc an icon would appear asking if I wanted to mount the drive. Now nothing appears. It's been like this almost a year.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 this morning and half of my RAM is not recognized!
Specs: Pentium 4 2x 2.80GHz, 1001.6 MiB RAM (should be 2x this), Ubuntu 10.04.
I'm trying to restore my laptop through the Ubuntu 10.04 Live CD. A while ago, Windows 7 died. I've tried everything possible to make it work again to no avail. At first I gave up on recovering my files and proceeded to formatting it, but that didn't work either, although it would boot from the CD, it would get stuck. It's as if the HDD couldn't be accessed.
After trying almost every version of Windows available, I decided to give Ubuntu a shot. I have used Ubuntu before and I thought maybe I could use the Live CD to see whether I could access the HD or not and, if not, claim the warranty (I bought the computer 4 months ago). I downloaded Ubuntu 10.04 and booted from it and was able to access all my files.
I wanted to move my files to an external HDD through the USB, but I plugged it in and nothing happened, no icon appeared on the desktop or on the Computer directory. I plugged in a normal USB flash drive, and no icon appeared. The funny thing is that the USB led lit up, so I knew it was connected to the computer.
I thought maybe Ubuntu wasn't mounting the drives and that I had to do it manually, so I ran both the lsusb and fdisk -l commands on the terminal with both drives plugged in and neither of them appeared listed. I even opened the message log to see if there was some reaction when I plugged it in, but nothing worked. :S
I restarted the computer and opened the BIOS to see whether the USB drive was enabled, as I had previously disabled some options trying to restore Windows, but the external HDD was being recognized by the computer; on the boot list it showed the name and serial of the drive, so that wasn't it.
I downloaded previous versions of Ubuntu, thinking maybe it had something to do with that (although I know it shouldn't), and the same thing happened: I could access the internal HDD but the external drives weren't being recognized.
I've browsed through the forums, going over the same procedures as other people with the same problem, but nothing works for me and now that I know that my files are safe, I don't want to format it anymore before saving at least the most important ones ><
I think I have 2 options before I run out of ideas. I could use GParted or Partition Editor from the Live CD to resize the partition to make enough space to install Ubuntu on my computer (I was thinking of doing it, anyway) and then fix everything from there instead of from the Live CD (if that changes anything), but I'm afraid that the files in the partition could become corrupted or damaged, and I don't want that. The other option would be to install Ubuntu on the external HDD and boot from it, as it WOULD HAVE to recognize it.
I want to know if there is any way to solve it before resorting to the latter option, as the HDD is not mine and I don't feel right partitioning it.
I had a motherboard 'POP' and die. I replaced it, the CPU, and ram along with a new PS. Then the IDE CDROM always read 'zero' for any media placed in it, so I bought a new USB DVD/CD do-all drive (LG G0 The system was desktop Dual (sic) Boot with WinXP. The XP would boot from the GRUB, but no Ubuntu. I used >find /vmlinuz and got H0,6, right where it always was. But I could not get it to boot
So I reformatted the IDE with Winxp (all my good stuff is on a SATA drive that I left out of all this )) unplugged. The Live CD wouldn't find the IDE hard Drive XP had just installed on- same as BEFORE I reformatted it. I tried all the distros I have (Puppy through Slackware, Suse, Sabayon, etc) .
Nothing could find the IDE drive. I flashed BIOS on the new MB-no help. I put Linux on a Flash drive and booted from there- no help No Partitioner can SEE the IDE...but XP runs on the IDE C:/ just fine (ntfs for C:, with 70GB unpartitioned, waiting for Linux) I am at a loss.
As far as I know, if the BIOS sees the IDE, and XP can run on it, the IDE HD is THERE and working. Yet no Linux can see the IDE HD, XP partition, blank partition, NOTHING. even dmesg shows no IDE The boot text shows no IDE in linux, right after the BIOS lists it correctly while booting.
I have installed Ubuntu on my netbook, an early Eee PC, and the battery ran out of charge. I didn't know that however and turned on my netbook. It started booting up traditionally, but then it just spit out a whole bunch of code:Quote:

mount: mounting /sys on /root/sys failed: No such file or directory

I have been trying to connect my TV to my ubuntu desktop for a while now. When i start up, the image from the desktop is shown fine on the TV right up until the ubuntu startup image. At that point the image disappears and doesnt return.GRUB and all the startup text is shown fine on the TV but after ubuntu starts, the tv just says "no signal".
Im using a ATI Radeon X800 "Old crap" craphics card. I assume it is because my graphics card does not have the drivers for it installed properly, so i tried that through the package manager along with the catalyst control center. When i tried to open catalyst it gives the message "There was a problem initializing Catalyst Control Center linux edition. It could be caused by the following No ATI graphics driver is installed or the ATI driver is not functioning properly install the ATI driver appropriate for your ATI hardware, or configure using ATI config" When calling aticonfig from the terminal, it says No supported adapters detected.the tv does not appear in displays either. My Medion 17' screen is properly identified in Display though (It does not say unknown or anything)
I have have just installed 10.10 on my Acer Aspire laptop. I connected to the Internet during installation and therefore should be right up to date. Grub2 does not show Windows 7 as a boot option. Did a bit of searching and ran sudo update-grub2 but no success. I am a newbie as far as Ubuntu is concerned. I installed 9.04 on my netbook and that worked fine. I have the added problem in having to get into Windows very shortly and I haven't a clue how to do it if grub remains broken. Windows partition still there I have not deleted it.

Does 32bit and 64 bit both recognize 8Gb ram Is there a site where I can send the developers a thank you and a congratulations for doing such a brilliant job of this OS, it's running perfectly.

View 1 Replies View RelatedLast night I booted up and got the black screen, and it would not boot. Can't find your /etc/home/fstab file or something along those lines I did not write it down. I got out my thumb drive and reinstalled Ubuntu 9.10, when I got to the partition phase I did a manual install and instructed Ubuntu to load onto /dev/sda1 /. I had previously partitioned this 160Gb drive with 41 Gb for root and 113 for my /home files and left 6.2 for Swap. Now it sees my second partition as 119 /dev/sda2 extended and Unrecognized. Unfortunately all my files are on that partition and I can't figure out how to tell Ubuntu to configure that partition as my /home . I really do not want to re-install and wipe that partition. Can gparted fix this dilemma? I thought I was being so good by creating a boot partition so that I could upgrade in the future without affecting the rest of my files.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI can write to CD+R no problem but when I try to write to DVD it does not work. When I put the DVD in the drive and go to computer and click open I get a message " unable to mount location, no media in drive." If I have a blank CD+R it says blank CD in drive but with the DVD I am having problems. I have way to many family pictures and I'd like to put it on 2 DVDs instead of 12 CD+Rs.

When I do a search of my video card I get "01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Rage 128 Pro Ultra TF", which is the integrated card on the motherboard, but I'm actually using an Nvidia GeForce 2 MX 400. At least that's the card my VGA monitor is connected to. How do I get Ubuntu to recognize the Nvidia card? I'd like to try installing an nvidia legacy driver for it to boost performance. Thanks.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy problem is the computer does recognize the wireless connections but when I put the wep key It just start trying to connect and then asks for it again, and this goes on and on and on. I'm pretty sure I got the key right so I have no idea whats going on. This happened to me to with the previous version of ubuntu and also with fedora and installations in virtual pc, or virtual box. Even normal installations with partition. This time I'm using wubi. I didn't get anything with the grep part, I must have done something wrong.

I recently installed Ubuntu after xp went off its last leg and couldn't start up (I deleted all previous files in the installation). It's a very good program and I have no problem installing new programs
The problem is that it will not recognize any iPod connected to it. ( not only mine but family as well)
Now when I say it doesn't recognize, I mean that programs like Banshee, Rhythmbox, and Hipo fail to recognize that an iPod is connected but my iPod can charge perfectly fine so I know that it isn't an issue with the cord.
I just installed Ubuntu Karmic 9.10 64 bits in my laptop because its kernel version is the only one that will recognize my fan, so upgrading to another version of Ubuntu is not a solution to this problem:So far everything has been working correctly except the capability of some GTK engines to recognize themes: they look like Windows 95 (I'm guessing they take the Raleigh GTK theme because they don't recognize the one I installed).
I've installed, uninstalled and reinstalled several times the Murrine, Equinox, Aurora and Pixbuf GTK engines, without luck. I've installed them from Synaptics (adding the source for some of them) or downloading them from gnome-look, but the problem persists. They both use Equinox, Aurora and Murrine. I'm guessing the problem is with the Murrine engine, because the "New Wave" theme that comes installed by default with Ubuntu doesn't look right either, and it uses that engine.I don't know what else to do, I disabled the Compiz effects but the problem is still there.
I have a serious problem: I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my computer which has a Hanspree HF257 25-inch monitor with a native resolution of 19201080. I have an NVIDIA GeForce 9400GT graphics card, and before I installed the proprietary NVIDIA drivers, the screen resolution was fine, but after I installed the recommended drivers, the screen resolution went way down after restart!
The monitor is recognized only as a "CRT-1 (CRT-1 on GPU-0)″ under the NVIDIA X-Server settings. The highest resolution I can adjust it to is 1360768. I have no idea what to do, but I'm sure there's a fix for this, right?
My friend bought a new PC, and he's duel booting Ubuntu 10.04LTS and Windows 7 Ultimate. At first I tried partitioning the hardrive using fdisk in Ubuntu, but it couldn't find hda. After looking in /dev/, there wasn't hda, or any sd* devices. I looked in gparted and used the installer afterwards and both came up with nil. I installed Windows, updated the BIOS using the utility that came with the mobo, and tried seeing if Ubuntu could detect my hardrive and it couldn't. I even turned ACPI off when booting and that didn't work either.
The motherboard is a new Gigabit with 3 PCIe slots and a USB3.0.
I installed ubuntu 10.04 LTS on my netbook a few months ago. So, obviously, i had to go through all those wireless troubleshooting guides. Well, it didnt quite get me anywhere. I cant seem to find my wireless adapter. I 've tried lspci, lsusb, but nothing comes up. So i cant even beggin to fix the problem. I 'd appreciate it if someone could help. Maybe point out which one my wireless adapter is? This is the -lspci output.
