Ubuntu :: Unable To Configure Tff-mscorefonts-installer
Feb 2, 2011I recently attempted to install the ubuntu restricted extras package, and it eventually led me to a certain screen (screenshot attached.) It seems I need to agree to the terms of use, but I can't seem to actually agree to it. I can't click <Ok>, I've tried pressing enter, pressing y then enter, pressing ok then enter, and a few other things.

Oct 12, 2010I just downloaded and burned Ubuntu 10.10 32-bit to install as a dual boot on my Dell Optiplex GX270 with WinXP and 256mb RAM. I boot into the CD and I select install now, and then an error message pops up saying it failed to start the installation, and that it is going to start a graphical interface so you can investigate the problem and try again. I really would like to install Ubuntu on my desktop because its much faster than Windows XP and I can't use wubi because of the 256mb ram.

Jan 12, 2010I have downloaded WINE and I have downloaded the WoW install.exe file and all goes good during installation (after i simply double clicked the install.exe file) but about half way through I got an error message that "installer is unable to read file C:/commen files/world of warcraft. I tried teh same thing on Z: and it did the same thing. What can I do to fix this or how else can i download/install WoW? i'm not running windows and linux, just straight up Ubuntu, nothing else.

General :: Unable To Launch GUI Based Installer On Machine
Dec 8, 2010When i tried to launch 2012 installer using GUI based command , it gives the following error message :-

It is looking for = > ./u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/dbhome_1/lib/stubs/libXm.so.4.
I tried soft linking libXm.so.3 with libXm.so.4 but it doesn't help. Also tried downloading Openmotif and installing, its asking for many dependency packages.
The following packages are also reported to be missing:-
When i try to download and run rpm on these, it gives dependency problem. And these dependencies seem to be deadlocked. I don not understand how i can go about it..

Aug 17, 2010I'm new to Ubuntu and I'm remote from the server. I'm setting up an Ubuntu server 10.04 x64. My intention is to load Oracle 11g, however I know I will need to be able to export an X display back to my desktop (Solaris) to run the Oracle installer. What do I need to load to get X working enough to export the display back to myself. I need to provide additional information. Since I'm new I may not have adequately covered what's needed.

I have the install package that i copied over to the machine using WinSCP i then gave the file executable permissions by using the command "chmod +x PlasticSCM-professional-2.8.148.0-linux-installer.bin" But when i try to install the package by using the command "sudo ./PlasticSCM-professional-2.8.148.0-linux-installer.bin" It gives me the following message.

why it isn't recognizing it? I know the file was there because i was able to change permissions and i can see it with -ls command.
Debian :: Can't Scroll Up/down In Debian Installer (even After Changed Keyboard Layout)
Dec 1, 2010when I finally wanted to install Debian to my hardrive. Somehow, how to copy it to USB drive and make it boot-able. Installation process started without problems, but it failed on step called (something like) "Find files in CD-ROM" - what was expectable, since I used USB drive. So I wanted to unmount "/cdrom" and mount my USB drive there instead. I moved to another terminal, and searched for right device. "ls /dev" does not help, since I can't scroll to see other devices. Also kernel messages - can't scroll. Tried to change keyboard layout, still didn't work. I also can't use less, because there is no apt-get installed. Another problem is, that after trying to mount only viewable device (/dev/sda1), mount failed bacause I gave there invalid argument, or directory didn't exist. (Note that I created directory in /mnt/... or /media/... first). So I am asking - how can I remap keyboard to use those page up/down keys?

Jun 13, 2010I'm having trouble getting the debian installer to detect an existing LVM
I installed Lenny on LVM on top of RAID 1.
My system looks like this:
I just added two 1.5 TB drives in raid 1 to the logical volume group home 100% added to /home /dev/md3
I went to reinstall the system from the lenny disc and now the installer does not recognize the LVM. It did recognize the LVM before I added md3 to the LVM.
During the partition editor, if i go to a terminal (by going to another window/console) and give the command vgdisplay it says that physical volume with UUID V0S1Yx-361r-NZaE-w1Fy-kCFQ-9MmH-g287vh cannot be found. You will see below that the UUID refers to /dev/md3 (the added 1.5 raid 1 array)
Below is the output of "pvdisplay" and "mdadm --detail /dev/md3"
I don't know if this has to do with it but /dev/md3 is the only array that says local to host yield [yield is my hostname] next to its UUID after the mdadm --detail command.
Debian Installation :: Can't Boot To Installer
Jul 5, 2015I've installed Ubuntu lots of times on my UEFI computer without any troubles. The last few days, I've been trying to install Debian Jessie on my computer. I do the steps bellow:
- Download the corresponding iso (amd64).
- Create a UEFI bootable USB drive with Rufus.
- With Safe boot, Fast boot and CSM disabled, I boot to the USB drive.
I expect to see something like this:
But what I get is this:
I'm using an Asus PC. GL550JK. The UEFI version is 205 (from Asus Support website).
Things I've tried:
- Booting with CSM on => Same behaviour. It's not my intention to install debian with CSM on, though.
- Using Wheezy instead of Jessi => Same behaviour.
Debian Installation :: Can't Boot Installer With CD Or USB?
Mar 6, 2010I tried to boot the net installer (debian-504-amd64-netinst.iso) from a flash drive (installed with dd). When I tried to boot that, my BIOS skipped the flash drive, which I had set the flash drive as the first boot device. So, I put it on a CDRW, and got the same result. I also tried the offline installer (debian-504-amd64-CD-1.iso) using both of those methods, with the same results. I verified the MD5SUM of this download. I am installing on a computer with a 64 bit Pentium 4 Prescott, if it matters. I have no other working OS on the computer. What other options do I have? Or am I doing something wrong?

May 11, 2011I'm having a problem with my debian installation; I am using the debian testing / wheezy weekly build CD, and despite using the full 650MB CD, and checking the CD to see that X, gnome, etc is all on there, it seems to insist on just downloading every single package from the internet - the CD doesn't even spin up during the 'select and install software' stage
This wouldn't be that much of a problem, except whenever I choose to use the graphical environment, it downloads all the packages, installs half and then says 'an installation step failed'!. And as it has to download the full set of packages from the net (rather than the CD) it gets a bit tiresome waiting 2+ hours for all the packages to download (I have fast internet, but the debian server doesn't feed data that fast).
And, the reason I am installing the graphical environment is that, although the installer recognises the network card, once you boot into the freshly installed system, it doesn't recognise the network card at all, and trying to bring it up just says 'eth0 not ready'!. So I want to get the graphical environment to make wireless easier to install, since the drivers for that are present, but wpa_supplicant isn't!
I'm tempted to just go and get Linux Mint Debian Edition... but I should be able to at least *install* Debian? (on a side note, I can't see what I'm doing wrong, since you can't really go wrong with the installer - it just seems to fail itself each time!).
how to make the installation faster by getting the installer to use the CD full of packages that I downloaded, rather than downloading the from the net each time, and also how to (1) find out *what* happened (the expert mode just says a step failed and that is it), and (2) to either get round it at the time, or prevent it happening somehow?. I installed Debian in 2007 on another laptop and that worked, but I then moved to Ubuntu as I wanted some newer software...... Ubuntu has been great until 11.04 which seems so full of bugs it isn't funny, so it is time to go back to Debian, if only I could get it installed!
Debian :: Installer Doesn't See Broadcom NIC's / Do That?
Mar 22, 2011I did a quick Google search and found a few old reports of bugs and miscellaneous postings but nothing hit specifically to my issue. My Dell PowerEdge 2950 server has Broadcom NIC's onboard and when I try to install a fresh ISO of Squeeze and then I tried even Wheezy and both came back and had issues recognizing my NIC's. They asked me to load additional firmware for drivers which I obviously don't have from Dell since they only support Windows O.S. Is there a method or some how I can successfully do a network install (netinst) on this hardware?

Sep 9, 2010The installer recognizes my wifi device but in order to connect to wifi I have to be able to use iwconfig to tell it that it has to connect to channel 11. If I don't do that it doesn't connect. The amd64 installer lists wireless tools in the list of extra tools to load, but for some reason the 32 bit installer doesn't. However wireless_tools...udeb is on the disk. What command would I use to load it manually from a console?

May 20, 2015I'm trying to install jessie on a new computer, but the installer does not see the hard drives. I copied the DVD-1 iso to a usb stick with dd (also tried the netinstall) and it boots, but when I get to partitioning, it only sees the usb drive. If I go to another virtual console and run dmesg or fdisk -l, all drives are seen correctly.
Back up a little - at first I tried the on-board raid, but when the installer couldn't see the drives, I went back into the bios and reset the sata mode to ahci. I've got it set to use bios/legacy OS, or whatever it's called, fast boot is disabled. Even if only one drive is connected, the debian installer does not see it. Then I read up on the fake raid I was trying to use and decided to go with software raid. Can't do that if there's no hard drives listed in the partitioner.
My own installer (refractainstaller) does work, and I've installed jessie with it a couple of times onto one drive, but I really wanted to use raid and lvm, and my installer doesn't do either of those things. No optical drive, but if that's the only way to install, I'll pull the one from my current box and use it for the install. I think I still have a blank CD or DVD lying around.
Hardware:
ASUS H97-PLUS LGA 1150
Intel core i3 (the cheapest one at newegg)
WD Black 1TB drives (2)
GSkill cheap memory, which already passed a memtest.

Jun 20, 2011I have 2 machines packardbell p3/733 and a Gigabyte p4/1.9Ghz both are running well with Lenny.The Lenny installer (debian-500-i386-netinst.iso ) works fine on both machines.The all the copies of squeeze installer ( debian-6.0.1a-i386-netinst.iso ) work on the P4 but on the P3 it locks up / crashes video card / ??? when I select Graphical install.I have re downloaded the file and use gnomebaker to burn the iso image.could it be a hardware incompatibility ?

May 27, 2011I am a little confused about the Debian installer. I chose the i386 release of Debian 6, downloaded the ISO and installed in a Core2-Quad with 4Gb of RAM. That lead me to a System with a 64Bit Kernel and a 32Bit environment (is that the correct word for it?). Why would the installer chose to install a 64Bit Kernel, even if i386 installation media was explicitly selected? Though it is easy to change the kernel manually after the installation is complete, I really would like to know if there is a good technical reason for selecting a 64Bit Kernel in this case.

May 9, 2011We installed Debain 6.0 (Squeeze) on a Seagate ST2000DL003 (2 TB SATA HDD) and the installer choose GPT for us. Only came to light when we tried to run fdisk and got "WARNING: GPT (GUID Partition Table) detected on '/dev/sda'! The util fdisk doesn't support GPT. Use GNU Parted". parted was not installed by default (!). Investigating further we found dd cannot be used to back up and restore GPT; for that you need gptfdisk (a.k.a. gdisk) which is still in beta and does not have a 64-bit .deb.
Clearly GPT is the future but I am not convinced it is mature yet (Bug#599437) and the online knowledgebase is not yet extensive. Taking all this into account, I am considering changing to a traditional MBR and included partition table. [Note on terminology: when using a GPT, the MBR is considered distinct from the partition table; when using a legacy partition table, the partition table is commonly considered part of the MBR]
Would this be wise? If the good people at Debian have programmed the installer to use GPT for this HDD, despite GPT's youth, they must have had their reasons. The most informative Debian documentation found is the Debian GNU/Linux Installation Guide, 6.3.3. Partitioning and Mount Point Selection which says "... Defaults may vary as well. The type of partition table used by default can for example be different for large capacity hard disks than for smaller hard disks. Some options can only be changed when installing at medium or low debconf priority; at higher priorities sensible defaults will be used".

Apr 18, 2011Currently, I have a dual boot set up with Ubuntu and PCLinuxOS. I have a separate / and /home partition for both (ext4). When I run the installer, it claims the whole disc is empty. I tried the expert option and loaded every module that seemed to have to do with partitioning, but that made no change. Is there some simple option I am missing that might help it recognize that there are existing partitions? This was the "testing" installer if that makes any difference.

My problem is: I boot the netbook via an SD card with the netinstaller image. When it comes to create partitions, the installer tells me, that my HDD is completely empty, which is not true. I have 3 partitions, one with w7, one with stuff (fat32) and one empty, where debian should go. Because it doesn't recognize my partitions, it only wants to create a new partition on the supposedly empty HDD, which is not what I want. Why does it not recognize my HDD? It always worked with Ubuntu, LinuxMint etc.

I have also downloaded-only all gnome packages (apt-get install -d gnome) and setup a small apt repository for base system and gnome on the same pc (server).However, my small apt repository is missing debian installer components like libc-udeb, dmsetup-udeb, ppp-modules-udeb, etc. The question is: Where to obtain those packages and their dependencies? I cannot find or download them with apt-get nor aptitude.
