Ubuntu :: Unable To Find The Partition To Boot Into It

I've had Ubuntu for quite some time, but recently I got my hands on a copy of a Windows 7 Upgrade disk, and thought that I would like to dual boot between Windows and Ubuntu. I wiped Ubuntu from it's partition because I know that Windows is picky and needs everything to be clean to be installed. Then I proceeded to install Windows 7 using the upgrade disk only to find that the product key to activate Windows wasn't valid. This was because I tried to clean install Windows 7 instead of upgrading. Then I reinstalled Ubuntu 10.04 on my computer and was able to dual boot between Ubuntu and Windows. After reading online, I discovered that all I had to do was reinstall Windows once I was running Windows for the product key to be valid. Now windows is running great on my computer, but I am unable to find the Ubuntu partition to boot into it. Every time I turn on my computer it goes straight to windows and I don't even have the option to boot into Ubuntu even though it is still on my computer.

I had two OS win xp nd fedora10.i formated my xp nd was installing windows 7 in its place when i did the same my fedora got invisible i m unable to find whole partition where my fedora was installed. and i cant use fedora now.

My recent setup was 32-bits Ubuntu 9.10 with / on a 20 gb partition and /home on a different partition on the same physical hard drive. Two days ago the system suddenly froze while idle. I rebooted and got the error message at start up that the system was unable to mount every unit that was listed in fstab. I troubleshooted by using a Live CD but could not find any reason to why i could not find the home partition. It lists in gparted but not in terminal using df.
I've made another install on a different physical hard drive and don't care about the previous installs, but I would like to get the data out of the home partition. If anybody have any idea what to try to access it

I have a 9.10 ubuntu desktop on a tower (bought 2004) working fine, and wanted to add a 10.4 server on an additional partition. After install, I stated grub may be newly written, as the list of os was fine. After reboot I got "grub rescue>" I managed to get the system working again, and now I have a grub2 menu list stating correct entries. But when I select the server entry the boot fails telling "disk not found" (The UUID of the partition given is correct, and also shown when accessing the partition from the 9.10 desktop (this needs an additional authentification when mounting) grub shell command ls does not show the partition, all other tools (life-CD, working installation, gparted etc.) do show it normally, I cannot find any difference. The partition is on the beginning of the disk

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my computer from Windows 7. Originally my Hard Drive was Split into two separate partitions. One was for the OS and the other was basically a storage drive. During the install of Ubuntu I deleted the OS Partition, Installed Ubuntu in that Partition, and used my Storage partition as a Swap.
After the install was complete Ubuntu loaded great and works just fine, the only issue is I can't find the other Partition where all my files were stored. Is there any way to locate this partition and access it as you would with Windows Computer>D:>etc or is there some other way to go about this?

After installing karmic with Grub2 I am unable to boot into Archlinux partition. Grub2 has removed the last line of the Archlinux boot stanza! It used to read:-

Following the Grub2 tutorials I have tried editing /etc/grub.d/40_custom as follows:-

But no luck. Only way into Archlinux is to get into the edit shell and manually add the missing line and remove other stuff not needed. I have spent hours trying to resolve this issue and I am fairly p----d off

I dual boot Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows XP. I booted into Ubuntu 9.10 and upgraded to 10.4 and upon reboot Ubuntu could not find the boot partition, it reported only /dev. I restarted my pc and and selected Windows and, fortunately, I was able to boot into that OS.

There already exist an os XP before my installing of ubuntu.When I installed my ubuntu 9.10, I selected to install grub2 on the logical partition sda7. But when I typed command sudo dd if=/dev/sda7 of=mbr bs=512 count=1, I found that the file mbr was eerily full of zero bytes. How does this happen? Or grub2 can't be installed on a logical partition? But it works very well along with win7 rather than XP.

I posted this first to thread 'Boot problem - "Gave up waiting for root device.", (initramfs)' then realized that I should start a new thread because the problem is not the same. On boot the splash goes black and nothing happens, On a recovery boot it drops into shell BusyBox and messages indicate that the root partition cannot be found. After booting from CD Gparted GUI partition information shows no label or ssid for the root partition sda2. The data for the root partition appears to be there. how to fix this? My /home, swap, and / are on separate partitions formatted ext3. I have a recent backup only for my data. I would like to avoid having to rebuild my system from scratch.

First time trying anything like this. I'm running a Abit NF7 with a silicon image 3112 that's support was broken in 2.6.35. I get a kernel panic when VFS can't find the root partition, I can't remember the exact line (can't log it, root isn't mounted yet) but it says something like sata1: link down (sstatus 0 scontrol 0). I think there might be a more telling error message before, but it flies by too fast to see or capture with my camera video recorder.
There's a patch that reverts back to when there was a delay in /drivers/ata/libata-sff.c in the function ata_sff_tf_load, by calling ata_wait_idle(ap) which fixes the issue for some people but not my system. I don't know anything about what I'm doing, but I thought I'd go through and add printk's in each function in sata_sil and see how far the device was initialized. I did this but they all happen early in the boot that flies by. Is there any way to add a pause like the "more" command? [URL]

Something went wrong during my upgrade, and i was unable to boot. What I did to save the day was to install Lucid parallel (on an other partition). Now I just want to double-check before I mess up again - I've backup-ed all the stuff i wanna keep and want to format the old partition. preferably I'd like to extend my current partition to the whole drive (or just make an empty partition for media if that works). So how do I do this the easiest way, and what would be the best option (i.e. 1 or 2 partts.)?

Upon trying to boot Windows I got through the GRUB startup selections and then i get stuck at a black screen displaying "Starting Up. . ." That would be no problem, I just boot ubuntu instead and mount the partition to access the programs I'm looking for. Now I get an interesting error message:
"Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 13: ntfs_mst_post_read_fixup: magic: 0x00150000 size: 4096 usa_ofs: 0 usa_count: 1040: Invalid argument Actual VCN (0x15000011d92501) of index buffer is different from expected VCN (0x1). Failed to mount '/dev/sda1': Input/output error NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows then reboot into Windows twice. The usage of the /f parameter is very important! If the device is a SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first activate it and mount a different device under the /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g. /dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). Please see the 'dmraid' documentation for more details."
I would run chkdsk in windows if I could, but that's my problem in the first place.

Everytime I start the laptop it works fine til the GNU GRUB page. There I choose code...
So what should I do? Is it something I can do myself or do I have to leave it in or something?

i recently deleted a NTFS partition while ubuntu was running and didnt disable the automount and when i tried to restart from what i can see it is trying to mount the partition which does not exist. When booting it says something to the effect of mounting dev/sda5 (which is now ubuntu) NTFS signature incorrect, what file must i change to allow ubuntu to boot because i kind of dont want to reinstall ubuntu and reconfigure it.

I'm upgrading from a 250GB drive to a 500GB drive. I booted into the live-CD, ran gparted and created the necessary partitions:
/dev/sda1 ext4 /
/dev/sda2 swap
/dev/sda3 ext4 /home
then I used dd to transfer data from the old drive to the new drive. Now I am unable to boot into the new drive. I tried to boot again from the live-CD but fdisk reports that the drive has no partition table. I can still mount the devices (e.g. mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/sda3) and I can see all the files. But without a partition table, I can't set one partition to be bootable. Why doesn't gparted create a partition table? it created the filesystems just fine. how do I boot into the new disk? What do I have to do to make grub handle the new disk?

I'm running 10.04 on Wubi in XP and want to partition to dual boot properly. I've done the permanent grub-update issue fix for Wubi so I've got the time to figure this out, I'm just at an impasse right now.
I've tried both GParted and PartitionMagic Live CDs and have been unable to shrink my main partition down. It's currently at 45 or so GB with about 22 GB empty. I've turned off my virtual memory in XP as well and no dice. I keep getting the error in GParted during the shrinking process. It doesn't really explain why, though.

i installed ubuntu inside windows but someone instead of uninstalling it directly deleted the ubuntu folder inside windows ,thinking that the partition will be deleted. but when i restarted the system and command prompt came and said unable to find boot record and i couldn't boot windows as well and a grub prompt came like grub>, then i inserted the windows boot cd and repair the boot record error but my problem is , instead of doing this way, can i do so by grub prompt directly without using winidows cd.

I have setup my opensuse 11.3 machine w/ LVM support for everything but boot. I have the following disks:
/dev/sda1 - 70.57 MB /boot
/dev/sda2 - 5.81 GB back up for original windows
/dev/sda3 - 292.21 GB LVM group.
When I attempt to resize the 70.57 MB partition, it tells me that 70.57 mb is the max that this partition can be. This was true even during the install

It seemed that it would be simple enough: take the 'f' option in the expert menu of fdisk to put partitions in order after a gap had been created by a deleted partition and then make corresponding changes in /boot/grub/grub.conf because the root partition was shifted.
Well, it didn't work out that way. No matter what I try, I either see the error 15 at Stage1.5 or the error 28, which is even stranger (file does not fit into memory). All this before I even see a grub menu. It just does not get that far.
Does anyone want to take as stab at guessing what might have happened here and whether I have a chance at recovering without having to reinstall? I can provide concrete data, if anyone would be kind to give it a try. Hoping that this is a known problem and something can be guessed from what I stated here but I can be as specific as needed, just don't want to generate noise if there are no takers.

I got ubuntu 10.04 lucid lynx along with windows (dual boot) and using Grub. On my computer, I have my C:/ (programs) and D:/ (data). I've never used my D:/ before that day that I've lost my windows partition on my grub menu. I usually use my D:/ with windows. The first time I used my D:/ to store data with linux, I lost my windows option in my grub menu. I'm not sure what I did wrong but I do want to restore my windows option in my grub menu.
After "fdisk -l",
I checked in /boot/grub and there is no menu.lst to modify. how I can get back my windows option in my grub menu ?

I am trying to install a box here where my /storage partition is about 2.5T.I had setup the partitioning with suse, while testing, and all worked well.Now when trying to install CentOs 5.5 it gives me an error, that my boot partition is on a gpt partition and this machine cannot boot that.Also I don't see the option to create XFS partitions from the installer.Can 5.5 support GPT @ install time?

I have around 30gb of free space in my partition table immediately before the Linux partition. I want to resize my linux partition to take up this space.
I tried booting with live cd, sucessfully umounted the hard drive but found I could not resize the partition. On clicking the 'edit size' button, partition manager recognised the free space before the partition but when i reduced this, the 'ok' button was greyed out. (it was not greyed out for the windows partition so I could, in theory, increase the windows partition to take up the free space but this is not what i wanted to do).
I am pretty sure that I had managed to unmount the drive correctly as the padlock symbol had dissapeared (I took the attached screenshot, which does show the lock symbol, after rebooting into my normal system).
Anyone got any ideas as to why it wont allow this? There is no reason why i can resize the partition to take up the free space BEFORE it is there?

I cannot install Kubuntu (or Unbuntu) 10.4 on my husband's computer. I have spent 5 hours on this and cannot get anywhere. I am deeply frustrated. The iso I burned to CD is good (works on 2 other computers). His computer will not boot from USB, no matter what I do to the drive order in BIOS. After loading the blue screen with the Kubuntu logo on it (and the blue-white dots), the screen changes to black and shows the following text:
BusyBox v1.13.3 (Ubuntu 1:1.13.3-1ubuntu11) built-in shell (ash) (initrafs) Unable to find a medium containing a live file system.
He really needs to get rid of WinXP. Kubuntu is what I have on my computer (and love it!). Here is some info about his computer:

I just compiled my first own kernel (I'm using Arch Linux), following the tutorial on the german site. The failure message was the same, just the root device name was the different name Also, at first I did not have the initrd line in my menu.lst (as written in my tutorial that I may not need it). using onboard windows disk management i have made 75gb unallocated to add to the aforementioned ntfs data partition. but, after resizing extended partition, will i need to fix grub even though i will be adding the unallocated space to a storage partition and not the ubuntu boot partition?

After several times install & reinstall,i got a stable dual boot vista / ubuntu 10.10.,but i can't access or even see my windows partition from ubuntu,i installed my dual boot with wubu this time,in previous installation when i didn't use wubi , i didn't have such a problem & windows partition with all my files in it (windows files,media ,etc,) was easily accessible from "places" on ubuntu . I already disabled windows firewall & other security options but nothing changed

is it possible to use a Windows-based recovery partition on a dual-boot computer to overwrite the Ubuntu partition and remove the GRUB loader? For instance, if you booted up your computer, accessed the hidden recovery partition and used it to reset the computer to it's factory default settings, would that effectively remove the Ubuntu partition and the GRUB loader? Would a completely new installation of Windows overwrite/uninstall Ubuntu and GRUB automatically?

When I installed Ubuntu on my system (a year or so ago) I forgot to add a BIOS Boot Partition. This is something of a problem considering that the partition type for my 2TB drive is GPT. Hence, whenever grub is updated I get a warning:
