Ubuntu :: Attempting To Partition To Dual-boot Properly - Unable ?

I'm running 10.04 on Wubi in XP and want to partition to dual boot properly. I've done the permanent grub-update issue fix for Wubi so I've got the time to figure this out, I'm just at an impasse right now.
I've tried both GParted and PartitionMagic Live CDs and have been unable to shrink my main partition down. It's currently at 45 or so GB with about 22 GB empty. I've turned off my virtual memory in XP as well and no dice. I keep getting the error in GParted during the shrinking process. It doesn't really explain why, though.

i just installed ubuntu 10.04 on my imac. i can play videos from videos no problem but when i try and play avi, mov or any other video format, the movie player quickly opens and closes. when i try with vlc player, i see the player bar but no video. when i try with smplayer, i can watch the video but when i go full screen, the movie doesn't take up the whole area of the screen. it stays at the same small size.
what do i need to do to make this right? i installed the ubuntu restricted extras. did i miss something?

After installing karmic with Grub2 I am unable to boot into Archlinux partition. Grub2 has removed the last line of the Archlinux boot stanza! It used to read:-

Following the Grub2 tutorials I have tried editing /etc/grub.d/40_custom as follows:-

But no luck. Only way into Archlinux is to get into the edit shell and manually add the missing line and remove other stuff not needed. I have spent hours trying to resolve this issue and I am fairly p----d off

I've just gone and modified the MBR by following this article: [url]
What now happens is that I boot up the machine and all that comes up is an error:
The disk drive for /home is not ready yet or not present Continue to wait; or Press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery
I have /home on a separate partition. Using the manual recovery I can see that the partition still exists and has all the files.
What do I need to do in order to get /home mounting again? Is this even the issue?

Today I attempted to install Win 7 on my Ubuntu 11.04 machine so I could dual boot. The Win 7b install went smoothly, but when I tried to fix grub everything went to hell.
I initially tried to reinstall grub using this walk though [URL] However, when I start the computer I get:

I tried to use the technique in [URL] to solve the problems, but when I try to run chroot I get a bin/bash error (I don't have the full error handy, but can rerun the steps if needed). The only potential cause that I can find doesn't apply to me since I am using a 11.04 64 bit live usb on a 11.04 64 bit install.

Celeron 2.20 GHz
Windows 7, 64bit
3GB RAM
I downloaded the DVD release of Kubuntu 10.04, from Kubuntu.org. The file is: Kubuntu-10.04-dvd-amd64.rar . I burned it to a DVD, as image, with ImgBurn application. See any problems so far? I want to dual-boot, leaving my Win7 in tact. I am confident that I can handle this with some patient instruction.

I just changed this computer to dual boot. Windows properly sees 8 gigs of ram. I put them in myself. I know they are good.
When I was checking the system monitor in ubuntu I noticed it only sees 3.2 gigs of ram. That is less then half.
I am on Lucid Lynx 10.04. It's setup for dual boot vista and ubuntu.

I am running the latest suse release downloaded directly from their website. I ran the installation after buring the dvd and everything seemed to be working fine. after the installation i ran updates and used it for a little bit. When i shut it down that night and went to restart it I got an error that stated the OS wasnt there. I then went through the installation and everything and it retained the information from the installation before (web history etc.) but for some reason every time I reboot or shut it down the system is not able to read the startup information from the hard drive and will not come on without me re installing it.

is it possible to use a Windows-based recovery partition on a dual-boot computer to overwrite the Ubuntu partition and remove the GRUB loader? For instance, if you booted up your computer, accessed the hidden recovery partition and used it to reset the computer to it's factory default settings, would that effectively remove the Ubuntu partition and the GRUB loader? Would a completely new installation of Windows overwrite/uninstall Ubuntu and GRUB automatically?

I recently bought a SSD and decided to give the majority of the space to windows for production purposes I gave 3.5GB for ubuntu but that filled up rather fast so i decided to move the folder taking up the most space to another partition which is /usr.
I tried moving the /usr to another partition and using a symbolic link but that didn't work so i'm trying (and would prefere this method anyway) to use fstab to do it

I have Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and Windows XP installed on my laptop. Usually when booting, I get the GRUB 2 menu and I can boot into either Ubuntu or XP.I was playing around with EasyBCD, then after trying to remove it I was unable to boot into Windows, I used a Windows 2000 CD recovery console to fix the MBR (using: fixboot and fixmbr).Now Windows starts up when I power on, but I don't get the grub menu anymore with an Ubuntu option. If I boot from the Ubuntu Live CD and try to mount my Ubuntu partition (/dev/sda5) I get this error:

I can only use the Live CD to operate Ubuntu. After typing in the command sudo fdisk -l, I get the following?
Disk /dev/sda: 320.1 GB, 320072933376 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 38913 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

I had a dual boot system with 3 partitions, Windows 7 on one partition, and Windows XP on another partition and a Data partition. I decided to load Ubuntu 10.10 on the Windows XP partition.During installation I selection manual partition, and deleted Windows XP.after successful completion of Ubuntu installation "Grub" directly boots into Ubuntu, it doesn't show me the OS selection screen. I want to partiton my hdd so I can dual boot XP SP3 & Ubuntu 9.10. Currently I just made 1 partition (NTFS) on 1 320GB hdd. And I need to make a partition for ubuntu.tutorials for this? Also I'd rather not have to use 3rd party tools for this.And just a quick question, after I do this, will the files be sharable between the 2 os's. Provided the file type can be used in both.

Ran Karmic for a while in a wubi installation with XP. Very unstable, lots of headaches at inopportune times. Now I'd like to try separate partitions so Windows might leave Ubuntu alone and not nibble it away as it did under the wubi installation. Here is my current partition status:

I have a Sony VPCZ13C5E with Intel Core i7 M640 @ 2.8GHz and Windows 7 Prof 64 bit.
It has 4 x 122GB SSD's in one Volume type Raid 0 using Intel Rapid Storage Technology.
The installation prog did not offer to install alongside an existing (Win 7) system, however after installation I was able still to boot Win 7 from the Grub Menu, but the Linux option just gives the black screen of death.
Booting from the 10.10 LiveCD and running sudo fdisk - l gives "unable to seek on /dev/sda". Also I have had a message "unknown filesystem type 'isw_raid_member' although I have forgotten where that came from!
The LiveCD shows that the filesystem does seem to have installed OK on the ext4 partion of 100Gb which I had kept for it, however it will not boot.
The results of Boot_info_script are shown in the attachment Results.txt
I have tried sudo mount /dev/mapper/isw_dijbjabefg_Volume07 /mnt and it gives no errors.
I then tried sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/sda which gave no errors but when I reboot and choose Linux the result is still the black screen of death.
I understand that the problem may be one of Ubuntu drivers having to catch up with the latest technology but given that Ubuntu can partition the swap file and the ext4 system I seem to be so close.

I'm trying to understand how I can partition my hard disk to allow for a dual boot (Windows & Ubuntu) as well as allow access to a certain set of files from both Windows & Ubuntu. So far I understand that I'll need:
1 Windows boot partition ~2-4GB
1 Linux boot partition ~2-4GB
1 Linux swap partition ~1-2 GB
But I don't know:How can I keep my non-boot linux files & folders -- /home, /usr, etc. -- separate from the boot files? Do I need another partition? If yes, what size & format -- FAT32, ext3, etc. -- should it be?
If I separate, for instance, the "/home" folder only where do the remaining folders and files reside?
How can I access certain files with both Windows & Ubuntu? Do I need yet another partition, formatted in FAT32?

I would like to install XP to /dev/sda5,sda6 being karmic. (I may have a dying dvd burner as was unable to install it yesterday but..) I got in a dreadful mess with grub after attempting to upgrade to Lucid,I needed to reinstall anyway. Will I be able to dual boot or should I just start from scratch?

I'm running UbuntuStudio 9.10 on my Toshiba Satellite A40 Laptop... it's perfect and I love it... but, I installed it cleanly doing a reformat of the drive, and with no partition - so using as much of the newly replaced 80gb drive as possible.Now, if I want to create a partition to install WinXP as a dual boot, 1) can this be done? 2) what do I use to do it?

I have a dual boot and every program I try to clone the ubuntu partition seems to want to have the entire hard drive to clone to.In other words, if I attach an external hard drive and select the ext4 Ubuntu Linux to clone to a purposefully made ext4 partition in an external drive - every program wants to copy to the entire external hard drive.Any suggestions?I think that clonezilla allows more freedom but I just dont quite get it - the options seem a little confusing in that I am worried that I will copy the partition back to my actual machine.
I am probably being a bit paranoid, but if anyone can think of a simple program that allows me to simply copy one partition to another purpose made (external) partition then please let me know!!

I have 10.10 installed on a Compaq laptop and want to set it up as a dual boot machine. I'm not sure how to 1) set up another partition 2) set up the dual boot and 3) install my second operating system. I'm sure that this is a pretty vanilla thing to do and am frustrated after trying to find out how to do it for a bit now.

Just ran into a problem involving mdadm, a disk which had been in a raid array, and an attempt to reformat. Basically, I went to reformat some partitions which had been in raid, and one of them threw the error andy@andy-desktop:~$ sudo mkfs.ext3 /dev/sdb5 mke2fs 1.41.11 (14-Mar-2010) /dev/sdb5 is apparently in use by the system; will not make a filesystem here! An attempt to umount revealed it was not mounted. lvdisplay and fuser did not reveal anything to me, so I just started looking around. I was graphically navigating /dev and noticed a /dev/md_d0 which did not look like /dev/md_d1 etc (it was missing a little arrow). I had not seen this notation before (my raid was md0), but figured it couldn't hurt to try stopping it.
andy@andy-desktop:~$ sudo mdadm --detail /dev/md_d0
mdadm: md device /dev/md_d0 does not appear to be active.
andy@andy-desktop:~$ sudo mdadm --stop /dev/md_d0
mdadm: stopped /dev/md_d0
After this, the partition formatted fine! I saw a lot of instructions including zeroing the partition and removing a logical volume, but the above was the only thing which worked for me! Just posted it in case it helps someone else. I know I've not been terribly technical!

Absolute newbie to Linux (assume I'm a complete dummyhead. I don't understand anything about Linux.). Just bought 500GB HDD. Made 3 partitions, 1 for Linux, 1 for Windows, and 1 for data.
1st, installed Win XP on 2nd partition (NTFS)
Then installed 64-Bit Ubuntu on 1st partition (Ext4)
(Created a 2 GB partition and for the swap file.)
Not sure which partition is primary, extended, etc., never really understood all that stuff anyways. XP was working perfectly, till I installed Ubuntu. Now, it just boots straight into Ubuntu, doesn't give the option to boot into XP. Tried everything I know, but it will not give the option to go into XP.
