I dual boot Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows XP. I booted into Ubuntu 9.10 and upgraded to 10.4 and upon reboot Ubuntu could not find the boot partition, it reported only /dev. I restarted my pc and and selected Windows and, fortunately, I was able to boot into that OS.
View 1 RepliesI've had Ubuntu for quite some time, but recently I got my hands on a copy of a Windows 7 Upgrade disk, and thought that I would like to dual boot between Windows and Ubuntu. I wiped Ubuntu from it's partition because I know that Windows is picky and needs everything to be clean to be installed. Then I proceeded to install Windows 7 using the upgrade disk only to find that the product key to activate Windows wasn't valid. This was because I tried to clean install Windows 7 instead of upgrading. Then I reinstalled Ubuntu 10.04 on my computer and was able to dual boot between Ubuntu and Windows. After reading online, I discovered that all I had to do was reinstall Windows once I was running Windows for the product key to be valid. Now windows is running great on my computer, but I am unable to find the Ubuntu partition to boot into it. Every time I turn on my computer it goes straight to windows and I don't even have the option to boot into Ubuntu even though it is still on my computer.

There already exist an os XP before my installing of ubuntu.When I installed my ubuntu 9.10, I selected to install grub2 on the logical partition sda7. But when I typed command sudo dd if=/dev/sda7 of=mbr bs=512 count=1, I found that the file mbr was eerily full of zero bytes. How does this happen? Or grub2 can't be installed on a logical partition? But it works very well along with win7 rather than XP.
I posted this first to thread 'Boot problem - "Gave up waiting for root device.", (initramfs)' then realized that I should start a new thread because the problem is not the same. On boot the splash goes black and nothing happens, On a recovery boot it drops into shell BusyBox and messages indicate that the root partition cannot be found. After booting from CD Gparted GUI partition information shows no label or ssid for the root partition sda2. The data for the root partition appears to be there. how to fix this? My /home, swap, and / are on separate partitions formatted ext3. I have a recent backup only for my data. I would like to avoid having to rebuild my system from scratch.

is there any tool to config grub? like yast on suse? (off the topic : is there any "grafic" version of grub?)
I wanted to Upgrade from Fedora 13 to 14 and downloaded the Upgrade Image using the Pre_Upgrade Installer. My system downloads the upgrade just fine but when it starts to perform the it asks for the location of the new Fedora 14 ISO and I have no idea where that is or what to enter as a possible location which I have no doubt is in the default area.
View 3 Replies View RelatedFirst time trying anything like this. I'm running a Abit NF7 with a silicon image 3112 that's support was broken in 2.6.35. I get a kernel panic when VFS can't find the root partition, I can't remember the exact line (can't log it, root isn't mounted yet) but it says something like sata1: link down (sstatus 0 scontrol 0). I think there might be a more telling error message before, but it flies by too fast to see or capture with my camera video recorder.
There's a patch that reverts back to when there was a delay in /drivers/ata/libata-sff.c in the function ata_sff_tf_load, by calling ata_wait_idle(ap) which fixes the issue for some people but not my system. I don't know anything about what I'm doing, but I thought I'd go through and add printk's in each function in sata_sil and see how far the device was initialized. I did this but they all happen early in the boot that flies by. Is there any way to add a pause like the "more" command? [URL]
I got ubuntu 10.04 lucid lynx along with windows (dual boot) and using Grub. On my computer, I have my C:/ (programs) and D:/ (data). I've never used my D:/ before that day that I've lost my windows partition on my grub menu. I usually use my D:/ with windows. The first time I used my D:/ to store data with linux, I lost my windows option in my grub menu. I'm not sure what I did wrong but I do want to restore my windows option in my grub menu.

I want to upgrade kernel to 2.6..36 from 2.6.18 of CentOS 5.5. The make process is successful but prompt "could not find filesystem /dev/boot " after reboot.
Some articles suggest to edit file .config and set CONFIG_SYSFS_DEPRECATED_V2 to 'y' and re-make kernel. However, the problem still stand there after reboot again.
I've just (finally!) gotten around to upgrading a couple of machines at a company I do some work for. One machine had a problem when I rebooted onto the new system. During the boot sequence, when it was checking and mounting the filesystems, it was unable to find the /boot partition. Now, this machine does run LVM on all but the /boot partition. The two SATA drives are mirrored, and they have the same partition layout:

I got the system to boot by commenting out the /boot partition in /etc/fstab, but this is certainly only a temporary solution. The other system that I upgraded came up just fine, as have several of my own. Unfortunately, I am doing these two systems by remote control via ssh as I have only limited plysical access to them. (I did have to get to it to figure out why it didn't boot up..)
I am trying to install a box here where my /storage partition is about 2.5T.I had setup the partitioning with suse, while testing, and all worked well.Now when trying to install CentOs 5.5 it gives me an error, that my boot partition is on a gpt partition and this machine cannot boot that.Also I don't see the option to create XFS partitions from the installer.Can 5.5 support GPT @ install time?

For instance, if you booted up your computer, accessed the hidden recovery partition and used it to reset the computer to it's factory default settings, would that effectively remove the Ubuntu partition and the GRUB loader? Would a completely new installation of Windows overwrite/uninstall Ubuntu and GRUB automatically?

If so, what is the rough sequence of commands to create the partition (without disturbing what is already there) and then setting it as a BIOS boot partition.
Recently I reinstall Grub, but I have chosen on ntfs (windows 7 partition E: drive). After this I chosen /dev/sda which is correct boot partition.
Now Fedora 10 and Win 7 booth are working properly.
How can I get back my E: drive safely?
In Fedora 10 E: is not available, where as in Win7 it is available but asking for Format.

Everything is installed and setup on my system, but when I setup my partitions I chose my Windows partition to be bootable. Can I just use cfdisk to toggle the bootable flag so my linux partition is bootable and rewrite the partition table?

I had a a problem booting last night when my laptop battery came loose and caused a crash during boot.It ceased loading a daemon and I turned it off with the power switch, then I received the boot error,then i checked the linuxdrives directory and it was corrupt,I then, out of ignorance, ran wubi from within windows XP and said unistall believing that it would reinstall and fix itself.Thus you can see my green behaviour.I have been searching the threads and have tried many things but have had no success, I will suffer a great loss if I lose that load of Ubuntu as I have allot of work stored there, and in my Thunderbird accounts.

I messed up a 500GB USB hard drive by confusing it with another drive, accidentally trying to erase it, realizing my error and pulling out the cable in panic. Running Testdisk has found no partitions to fix. Photorec can find most of my files but sorting them out again is going to take weeks. Are there any methods I can use to try and save my folders/file system on the HDD? I'm very much a novice as far as partitions and file systems go.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop with dual boot and I think because it is a dual boot I can't find the linux partition, installed when I knew nothing about linux, so I most likely went with the default settings, I'm an absolute convert now and have run out of space for ubuntu.So got on the net and seen many screen shots of gparted with a clearly visible linux partition, swap etc, so I make myself a gparted live cd and mine is just not there.Really don't want to do another ubuntu re-install. This k52f has too many setting to correct with ubuntu and took me a really long time!!
Or is there is a different solution to to this other than expanding a possibly hidden linux partition? Is the alternative storing files on a shared partition both os can share?
I'm running 9.10 off of a 4 GiB CF card. I keep running into space issues with updates, so I purchased an 8 GiB replacement card. I've cloned the 4 GiB card to a .IMG file using DD.I've then copied the 4 GiB image back to the 8 GiB card using the Ubuntu startup disk creator program. Once done, I'm able to properly boot off of the new 8 GiB clone.Unfortunately, the clone ends up with 3.67 GiB of unallocated space at the end *see attached). I tried deleting the "extended" partition that the swap is located at after booting from a Live CD and the system was unable to boot after this. I was thinking that I would delete the swap entirely and create a swap file after I merged the existing partitions, but I was unable to do this.
best way to do this (e.g. get one large 8 GiB partition with my old image on it)? I still have the original untouched 4 GiB card and also have an external CF drive if I need to redo the cloning. I've also used Clonezilla before, so perhaps there's a way to do this that allow me to grow the image as it's being cloned.
I am building a 10.04.1LTS server. I am putting the /root filesystem into a Software RAID1 partition. I want to keeo my /boot partition outside of RAID.Is there a way to have a boot partition on both sda and sdb so if one drive fails the second boot partition will work away - or should this be kept in with RAID also.
View 6 Replies View RelatedSince I tested with suspending/hibernating my laptop, the system seems to have lost the swap partition. That is to say: it cannot find it at boot anymore. Some message shows during boot like "waiting for device listed in fstab: swap" or something and then it continues toboot normally. When I start the systemmonitor it reports Swap usage 0 byte out of 0 byte.
I checked my devices with

in terminal and it lists one of the partitions with its UUID as TYPE="swap".
Then I opened fstab with

sudo mousepad /etc/fstab
and noticed the line for the swap partition was using a completely different UUID. After changing the UUID to the correct (new) one and reactivatin swap with

sudo swapon -a
in terminal, all was well again but...
How could the UUID suddenly have changed? Did that indeed have something to do with trying (and failing) Suspend and Hibernate ? If so, should I stay away from those features (that served me well under Windows) or is there something to be done about it?
I had my HD partitioned with Win7 and 2 versions of Xubuntu (32 and 64 bit). and Grub as multiboot loader. I removed the 32 bit version and assigned the free space to the 64 bit version using the Gparted bootCD, but now Grub can't find any partition anymore at boottime. All I get is this message and prompt when I try to boot my computer: error: no such partition grub rescue. My Linux partition is supposed to be sda6. When using the 'ls' command I get quite few entries, from which one is (hd0,6), which is sda6 I suppose.I can list the contents of directories on (hd0,6).I've tried instrucions from this page, but many commands don't work, like 'linux', 'initrd' and 'boot'.I really don't want to loose my current OS's. Is there a way to recover fom this so I get the Grub boot menu with my Win7 and Xubuntu entries again?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI messed up my mbr by deleting my other drive which I guess had the MBR for both my OS (2 Windows 7's). So i installed Ubuntu in an attempt to fix it all hoping to get the GRUB. It then booted directly into Ubuntu.So I ran bootsect.exe tx the mbr and it said success.Still boots into Ubuntu directly without and grub.
I ran sudo update-grub
Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.35-22-generic
Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-2.6.35-22-generic
Found memtest86+ image: /boot/memtest86+.bin
done
So I recently started using Windows 7, but it kept crashing so i thought "OK back to WinXP and Ubuntu 10.10" So I installed Windows (urrrggh) and that went fine, but now that I have come to installing Ubuntu Desktop 10.10, it cant seem to find the Windows XP partition, I tried manually editing partitions but it wouldnt let me resize the partition. But it did give me the option to install the Bootloader (GRUB) to the partition labelled "Windows XP Professional".
I have used this setup before and ran fine, bare in mind that was with 9.10, maybe I should install 9.10 and then use "sudo apt-get install dist-upgrade"?If i cant get this working I will try another distro and see if its Ubuntu or whether its a Windows or disk issue.
