Ubuntu :: Screenlets And CompizConfig Settings Manager Will Not Start?
Apr 10, 2011
When I try to run Screenlets from Applications > Accessories > Screenlets, it says "Starting Screenlets" for a few seconds, and then nothing happens. 'screenlets-manager' from the terminal produces the following
Code:
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/share/screenlets-manager/screenlets-manager.py", line 28, in <module>
import screenlets
File "/usr/local/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/screenlets/__init__.py", line 36, in <module>
import rsvg
ImportError: No module named rsvg
I have checked to make sure python-rsvg is installed. Upon looking for a solution, I read somewhere that it might have something to do with Compiz. I installed the Compiz settings manager, but when I run it from System > Preferences > CompizConfig Settings Manager, it does the exact same thing Screenlets does ("Starting CompizConfig Settings Manager", then nothing).ccsm from the terminal produces the following

Whenever I tick boxes it doesn't save anything after closing. When I clicked on Advanced Search it froze (twice) after showing a progress bar. I got this error when clicking on preferences:
jerome@linux-yxnq:/dev> ccsm
Backend : ini
Integration : true
Profile : default

By default nothing is ticked but I think there are some effects already enabled on my system.

Trying to start software center:

Also, in 11.04 there's a "feature" where if I drag the title bar of a window against the top of the screen, it expands sideways. How do I disable that? I'm guessing I do it in CCSM.

I did a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04 on a Toshiba Satellite, Intel graphics card, a few days ago, and had no trouble accessing the CompizConfig Settings Manager. I changed a number of settings, and everything seemed to be working just fine. But two days ago, I noticed that the compiz effects (rotating desktop cube, minimize effect etc.) were gone; and when I now try to access the Settings Manager, I see a "Starting CompizConfig..." appear in the panel and linger for about five seconds; then it's gone. No settings manager, no error message.
The day that happened, I had (to the best of my memory) not installed any updates. I had, however, removed a bunch of applications through the Software Center. I had also launched Ubuntu Tweak and changed a couple of settings. The only option it showed, and shows, under 'Compiz Settings' was then (and still is): "Prerequisite Conditions" : "Install Advanced Desktop Effects Settings Manager". The box was checked. I have since unchecked and re-checked it, thereby uninstalling and re-installing the settings manager. But that hasn't changed anything.

Just got my 11.04 and tried to use some settings in Compiz. I`ve made these steps: Install the CompizConfig Settings Manager (ccsm) application from the Software Center. If you need assistance with installing the application, consult the software installation help, or review the Ubuntu Software Center Manual.
After you have installed the program, click the power icon at the very right of the panel and select System Settings. In the Personal section, click CompizConfig Settings Manager. In the Desktop section of the CompizConfig Settings Manager, click Ubuntu Unity Plugin, and select the Experimental tab.
I`ve clicked on the left side there was something like "enable plugin" or sort of. And my launcher, and the pane on the top dissapeared! I got nothing. Just the screen. Nothing is workin. What the f>..?

I like everyone else posing in this forum am trying to reconcile with 11.04. Everytime I adjust a setting in the CompizConfig Settings Manager, the top unity bar wigs out and disappears, it is still clickable but its invisible. Is there any simple fix to this? I don't think it's my hardware because other people are getting this too. I really don't like restarting/logging off my computer everytime I make a compiz change.

I am running 9.10. If I have multiple windows open, and my cursor is moved off the main window (but the focus is unchanged - i.e. I did not click off the main window), the main window will become transparent. At first I thought this was a cool effect, now it just gets on my nerves. I have looked through CompizConfig Settings, I can not find the relevant effect to turn off.

Brand new to ubuntu and I'm trying to get different wallpapers on different work stations. I've read several tutorials and they all say to go to my CompizConfig Settings and go to the Utilities section, under which you will find Wallpaper. I went there and can not find it. I can't right click on my desktop either for some reason. Ran a quick search and I couldn't find anything in the forums.
EDIT: Solved! Had to download compizconfig-plugin-extras

Running 10.10. After installing Screenlets from the software center, I opened the screenlets manager to start the GCal widget that I wanted to run. However, when I click start/stop nothing happened. I was hoping that it was something simple so I moved my dock around to see if the widget was starting behind the taskbar or dock, but no such luck. I have the widget layer enabled in compiz, but the screenlet is not showing up there either.. Just a blank screen when I hit F9.
I've installed compiz, conky, compiz-fusion, compiz-plugins-extra and I can see all the options that seem to be necessary for the screenlets to function. I just don't see anything for any of the screenlets when I try to enable them via start/stop....

I installed screenlets last night and the weather widget starts regardless of how many times I delete it. The cairo clock will not start no matter how many times I add it and tic the auto start box. So I uninstalled screenlets this morning to start over and it's still doing the same thing. Does anyone know of a way to fix this?

After switching to 10.04 (fresh install) I can't adjust emerald themes. In emerald settings manager I used to click on desired theme, edit it and save under a new name, then delete old one. Weird, but working. Now, when I click on theme in the list, it sets this theme and quits. I didn't find a way to adjust theme settings.

I found several threads addressing a similar problem, but neither of the remedies suggested there worked. So I decided to start a new thread. For now, I have made a custom /etc/resolv.conf.old and every time I log in, I have to manually do

So I decided a while ago to download the newest distribution release, Lucid Lynx, and try it out on a LiveCD. The first thing I installed onto the LiveCD environment was CompizConfig Settings Manager. One question I have about it is... Why are so many of the plugins missing or limited?
In 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope, there are many plugin options, and to be honest, I use a large quantity of them. For example, a plugin I use on 9.04 called "Reflection." For those of you who don't know, reflection allows you to show an image in window decorations and shadows. This plugin is completely missing from CompizConfig Settings Manager in 10.04!
Another example, this time a limited one, is the Animations plugin. It's missing the option for closing animation called "Burn." This is an animation I LOVE showing off and using, yet it's... Gone.
Am I missing something? Did I do something wrong on installing it? Is there a way to get the parts that are missing?
Just in case you're wondering how I installed it, it was the popular method of using GNOME-Terminal and typing:
Code:
sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager

I just updated to Ubuntu 10.04 and am in love with it. However, when I tried to restore everything I had on my compiz, I realized that a integral part for me was missing. The "maximumize" feature is gone. This is the feature that makes a window fill up all the space it can without interfering with other windows, essentially making it like the windows 7 tiling feature, only better since you can do it with multiple windows and in any way you want. This was in the compiz settings manager in 9.10.

I'm thinking about a OS reinstall, using Ubuntu. OK, presently I have: Old desktop machine with Win Vista installed. I have no Vista disk, so when it's gone, its gone for good. The system is set up with BT using ADSL, with a wireless router included. I can access whats called the BT home hub manager through a URL in a web browser, this gives me all specific information with regards to getting online, router etc. My main concerns are: If i do a complete reinstall (Ubuntu) then will i still be able to configure it all with Ubuntu? I'm thinking that BT will probably not support Linux platforms hence any software coming from (i.e. disk) them would be in the form of Windows binaries, about as much use as a handbrake on a canoe as far as Linux is concerned. So, if i take the plunge then; if i can access BT home hub manager through a URI with all pertinent information displayed there - is that all i need to get me up and running? I mean, reinstall, visit BT home hub manager URI and configure Ubuntu with all settings found there?

This message comes up as I am logging into my account. Upon entering my password it goes back to the logon screen.
Booting into recovery mode and different kernels doesn't help.

Title pretty much says it. As you can see from my screenshot, my effects list is far shorter than it's supposed to be, a quarter the size of what I had on my hardy desktop. The main effects that are driving me insane not having are 3D windows, e.g. windows hover above the desktop cube in order of use, and water sloshing around in the cube as I rotate it. Are these now options under an effect? I couldn't find them anywhere. Running 32 bit lucid on a laptop with a good graphics card.

I started using Natty as soon as it came out. There were some minor things that did not work but I supposed they would be fixed in updates soon enough, and most were. However, there is one issue that still is not fixed. In compiz, there is a window management 'app' called Maximumize, which allows you to maximize windows in certain directions using shortkeys.
Since I started using Natty, this app doesn't work properly anymore. It will no longer maximize to the left, right or up, but the strange thing is down does work (sometimes). I've tried reinstalling compiz, disabling the app and enabling again, resetting the shortkeys, but still only down works, and the others don't. This is quite annoying since I like to use this feature alot. Resizing windows by hand is quite tedious. Has anyone else had this problem? I could not find anything about it so far.

I'm running Fedora 10. My Network Manager settings are all grayed out. They are uneditable. I can see the detected settings, but not change them. All of the settings fields are disabled.
Is there a way to enable these, so that they can be edited?
Starting with the menu in the upper left corner of the GNOME screen: System/Preferences/Internet And Network/Network Connections
The Network Manager window appears correctly.
I see all automatically generated settings that were created for my various devices:
In particular, I want to be able to edit "Auto vmnet8", for VMware usage.
I know about the workaround of going back to the manual network configuration as used in older versions of Fedora, such as editing the files in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-* and then enabling the old "network" service and disabling the "NetworkManager" service.
However, this workaround really won't work in this situation. The VMware interfaces, vmnet1 and vmnet8, are virtual interfaces that *only* exist when the VMware services are running. The VMware services are started *after* the old manual network configuration would be applied. So, at the time the scripts in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts are processed, the vmnet1 and vmnet8 devices do not yet exist! I'm hesitant to change the numbering of services, lest other things break (VMware on Fedora 10 is rather fragile already).
I love the feature of NetworkManager to be able to automatically apply settings to newly materialized network devices (such as vmnet1 and vmnet8 when VMware is loaded). However, I need to also be able to edit those settings.
Is there a solution that will make my Network Manager "Edit" window not be entirely grayed out? I can see the settings pages just fine, but unfortunately, they are all disabled and I can't edit them at all.
