Im running ubuntu 10.04 on a Acer TravelMate 5520, ATI Xpress 1250. The Sony 40" TV is connected to the laptop with a VGA plug, but with 10.04 im finding the output picture is wobbly, distorted regardless of resolution.
It does work fine on ubuntu 9.04, picture perfect. Ive booted into both and checked the resolution and their identical.
I have an HP EliteBook 8540p laptop with associated docking station. It is running Ubuntu 10.04. Until now I have been successfully running TwinView with the nvidia-195.36.24 drivers - using the built-in LCD screen and an external LCD monitor, connected via an analog VGA cable.I've changed the screen over to a larger resolution Philips LCD, and it works fine over VGA.
However the image is not as sharp as I'm used to with other monitors, so I'm trying to get it working over the DVI port on the laptop docking station.However I have been quite unsuccessful in getting a picture to appear on the external monitor - Xorg is able to read the EDID information from the monitor, and according to Xorg.0.log has absolutely no problems with finding a valid mode and choosing this monitor as "DFP-1", alongside "DFP-0" (laptop display). But no matter what I do I can't get a picture. Xorg.0.log has no errors.
I have unsuccessfully tried: various combinations of xorg.conf options to set "ConnectedMonitor", "CustomEDID" with a EDID .bin downloaded over VGA, etc.a colleague has the exact same laptop and monitor, and has it running fine. However using his xorg.conf still produces no picture.nvidia-settings - tried lots of things a different DVI-connected monitorIt's as if the DVI port is fully functional in every way but its output is somehow disabled. I've also tried other monitors, they don't work either, yet do with a VGA cable.
EDIT: I have checked the DVI cable anything else in terms of enabling a DVI port.
i had just edited a picture in digikam that was going to be my new desktop wallpaper.when i went into system/preferences/appearance to make the new change it would not show the new picture that i had just edited as a choice to change my new wallpaper to. then i tried closing the appearance box and it would not close.then i shut down and restarted and when i bring up the appearance box it does not let me click on anything within.also can't close it.seems like other applications are working normally.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI was tweakng the desktop effects in kubuntu and adjusted the stiffness slidder to max out wabbly windows so I could compare it to more stiffer option. It is only supposed to wobble when the window is moved but as soon as I hit the apply button the window started wobbling all over the place! So fast, that I can barely tell what window it is! It is impossible for me to open any windows without them flickering all over the place. I will not be able to fix this inside KDE.
Does anyone know of a command-line option to turn desktop effects off? Is there a desktop configuration file somewere I can edit w/ nano? I am having to write this on windows7 because I can't use any windows in linux.
Upgraded to 11.04, tried Unity for a month but hated it, reverted back to Gnome today, now I have no wobbly windows.
I've enabled WW in CCSM and all the settings are defaulted. I've tried removing all traces of Unity using synaptic, but it just doesn't seem to have made a difference.
I've read a few threads about this, but so far haven't seen a fix other than "it just started working", so any pointers or ideas would be great as it hasn't just started working for me.

I'm having trouble with my Ubuntu VM's --I'm running a Win 7 Home Premium Host, (8GB RAM, 1TB HDD, NVidia GeForce Video) Oracle VirtualBox (Current version)
-- When I set up Linux VM's w/ 3D Acceleration, and 128MB Video Ram,
-- I can't enable the 'Extra' Video Effects, to get Compiz working.
-- Even when VBox Guest Additions is installed.
VBox Guest Additions does let me use Full Screen, & Seamless mode, correctly though.
But if I try to set 'Extra' Video Effects, it can't find the correct driver.

Worked fine on the live cd run, but on the install its red x there?/?? Funny thing is i still have internet access.What do i need to do to set this up right used to debian ways not rpm? View 8 Replies View RelatedIn order to correct bug #459647 in compiz (as I have done on 2 other PCs) I downloaded, modified, and compiled the source with apt-src and make. Then I installed the produced .deb files with dpkg -i. For whatever reason the new compiz didn't have wobbly windows nor could I switch workspaces. Compiz is running and I do know however that compositing is working as Docky is still functional (and doesn't really work without compositing).
So I uninstalled all of the compiz packages and reinstalled the versions from the official repository. The same issue remained. During this time I have restarted my computer several times with different configurations. I tried to install compiz packages from the [URL]...ubuntu PPA and still the same problems exist. I'm not sure if there are any other problems that I haven't noticed yet. Finally, in an attempt to fully purge my computer of all things compiz and start over, I got the following error:

I'm not sure what "compiz-code" is, but that's the name of the folder that I downloaded the source into. After this command, no packages are removed. I'm currently running Lucid 10.4.1 with all the latest updates. My graphics card is an Intel 945M mobile chipset. I run a similar configuration on 2 other computers with no issues. Has anyone ever seen this? Or have any idea how I can get compiz-code out of my package database. I know the problems I'm encountering aren't high priority, but not having workspaces gets annoying and I have no clue what else is broken with my 'half-broken' compiz.
Not too happy with Ubuntu's venture into 'unity' so intend to give debian a 'test drive'.Re some eye candy, compiz-config settings manager enables numerous attractive settings but it doesn't seem to work on my machine.On Ubuntu wobbly windows and desktop cube works fine but not as it stands with my debian setup.Under Preferences-appearance debian has 3 tabs, Ubuntu has an extra tab which I think may be the key.Is there something extra I need to install on debian to get my 'wobbly windows'.

View 1 Replies View RelatedWith previous installs of Ubuntu, I was able to get the "wobbly window" effect working. In 11.04, I have to go through the compiz config utility. When there, I check "wobby window effect" and lo and behold, nothing happens. In fact, none of the modifications to the compiz config utility work. This is really frustrating. I can't find a solution anywhere.
The last thing I want to hear though is that it must be my graphics card. If this is your response, please don't even bother. Just leave this thread at once.
I cant seem to get the sound working and when I click on perference then sounds and go to the output selection it has only dummy output as a option.

So here's the situation. He plugs his audio jack into his computer and then into the speakers but it still plays from the computer speakers.
I finally got audio working on my ubuntu 9.10 desktop... now I am having sound issues watching movies from a network share.The sound device continually randomly changes to "dummy output device" and then there is no sound output. The sound icon dissapears on the toolbar. To get it back and audio to start working I have to $sudo alsa force-reloadIt seems to happen everytime there is a network delay, the movie will stop for a second and then when it plays the sound is gone
View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed 10.04 on a lappie the other day, and it all works nicely! BUT, there is also XP on another partition of the hard drive, and the Ubuntu install has taken some properties from the XP accounts on there. One of the properties it has taken is a picture associated with my account. (You know the thing, XP has them built-in. A cat looking through a mousehole, a kid on a bicycle, a chess board etc etc etc). And I can't remove it. System > Administration > Users and Groups shows me a list of all the accounts, and the picture associated with my account, but it doesn't have any method of removing the picture (or of associating a picture with any other account, come to mention it.)
I could create a new Ubuntu account without the picture but that would involve swapping settings between the accounts, which would be a pain.
How can I take a picture of my desktop?
