Ubuntu :: Compiz - No Workspaces Or Wobbly Windows After A Botched Source Install?

Sep 15, 2010

In order to correct bug #459647 in compiz (as I have done on 2 other PCs) I downloaded, modified, and compiled the source with apt-src and make. Then I installed the produced .deb files with dpkg -i. For whatever reason the new compiz didn't have wobbly windows nor could I switch workspaces. Compiz is running and I do know however that compositing is working as Docky is still functional (and doesn't really work without compositing).

So I uninstalled all of the compiz packages and reinstalled the versions from the official repository. The same issue remained. During this time I have restarted my computer several times with different configurations. I tried to install compiz packages from the [URL]...ubuntu PPA and still the same problems exist. I'm not sure if there are any other problems that I haven't noticed yet. Finally, in an attempt to fully purge my computer of all things compiz and start over, I got the following error:

Code:
masen@dv6000m:~$ sudo apt-get autoremove --purge compiz*
[sudo] password for masen:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Couldn't find package compiz-code
masen@dv6000m:~$

I'm not sure what "compiz-code" is, but that's the name of the folder that I downloaded the source into. After this command, no packages are removed. I'm currently running Lucid 10.4.1 with all the latest updates. My graphics card is an Intel 945M mobile chipset. I run a similar configuration on 2 other computers with no issues. Has anyone ever seen this? Or have any idea how I can get compiz-code out of my package database. I know the problems I'm encountering aren't high priority, but not having workspaces gets annoying and I have no clue what else is broken with my 'half-broken' compiz.

Not too happy with Ubuntu's venture into 'unity' so intend to give debian a 'test drive'.Re some eye candy, compiz-config settings manager enables numerous attractive settings but it doesn't seem to work on my machine. On Ubuntu wobbly windows and desktop cube works fine but not as it stands with my debian setup.Under Preferences-appearance debian has 3 tabs, Ubuntu has an extra tab which I think may be the key.Is there something extra I need to install on debian to get my 'wobbly windows'.

Ubuntu :: Can't Name Workspaces With Compiz Enabled?

Apr 8, 2010

I had named all my workspaces earlier today, and it was great help in organizing my workflow. However, I went to turn on some compiz effects (to improve the visual ergonomics of my work environment), and now I notice workspaces are acting a bit strange.I can no longer drag a window onto one of the workspace boxes in the bottom right to move the window. Also, if I left click the workspaces pane and go into properties, I can now only change the rows and columns, not the workspace names. This is a bit strange, and I see no reason that enabling compiz should cause this kind of problem.I can right click a title bar and send the window to a different workspace that way, but because they're not named, it's hard for me to organize my desktop this way

If I open a window in work space 2, it should stay only appear in workspace 2. 1.How would I do that using compiz? Software :: Compiz-config And Workspaces - NVidia Driver ?

Feb 13, 2011

A couple of issues with compiz. I'm setting up Debian Squeeze on a new-to-me laptop. Video card is nVidia Quadro FX 570M.

I installed the nVidia non-free driver, and that's working fine. Compiz starts up ok (I say "compiz --replace"). At least some of the effects are working, and the windows look normal.

First issue: as soon as I start Compiz, the number of workspaces goes from 4 to 2. And Workspace Switcher Preferences (the thing that pops up when you right-click the workspace switcher in the Gnome Panel) no longer shows the controls for changing the number of workspaces.

Is there is a way to change the no. of workspaces using gnome configuration editor? That might be a good workaround.

The second issue is, compizconfig-settings-manager will not run, whether Compiz is running or not. I dont know if it would run before I installed the nVidia driver (Compiz wouldn't run so there was no reason to try CCSM). When I try to start it from the menu, I get the spinning cursor for several seconds, and that's all. When I say "ccsm" in a console...

Code:

I dont think the locale error is the problem. I get locale warnings all the time, like when I use apt-get, but it doesnt stop the program from running. But I could be wrong about that.

Ubuntu :: Turn Off Wobbly Windows In Terminal ?

May 5, 2010

I was tweakng the desktop effects in kubuntu and adjusted the stiffness slidder to max out wabbly windows so I could compare it to more stiffer option. It is only supposed to wobble when the window is moved but as soon as I hit the apply button the window started wobbling all over the place! So fast, that I can barely tell what window it is! It is impossible for me to open any windows without them flickering all over the place. I will not be able to fix this inside KDE.

Does anyone know of a command-line option to turn desktop effects off? Is there a desktop configuration file somewere I can edit w/ nano? I am having to write this on windows7 because I can't use any windows in linux.

Ubuntu :: Natty - Gnome And Wobbly Windows

Jun 7, 2011

Upgraded to 11.04, tried Unity for a month but hated it, reverted back to Gnome today, now I have no wobbly windows.

I've enabled WW in CCSM and all the settings are defaulted. I've tried removing all traces of Unity using synaptic, but it just doesn't seem to have made a difference.

I've read a few threads about this, but so far haven't seen a fix other than "it just started working", so any pointers or ideas would be great as it hasn't just started working for me.

Ubuntu :: No Display After Botched BURG Install?

Nov 24, 2010

and I did a silly noobish thing. I have been using Ubuntu in various flavors for a little over a year now, and decided to install it alongside my Win7 Install on my desktop. Last week I read about BURG on omgubuntu.co.ukI am fairly certain I botched the install of burg somehowWhenever I turn on the computer, there is no display, not Mobo splash screen, not post, no GRUB menu nothing. the Display light is orange, indicating no input detected. But I know the OS is loading, I can hear it bootup, I can login, just by pressing enter, then typing my password, then enter again. Once I hear the login screen drum beat, if I turn off the monitor, then turn it on again, I get a super low res display. the driver works, compiz effects work, but everything is at 640 x 480. when I go to system-> preferences-> monitor the display is labeled as unknown and I can't change the resolution.I can access the BIOS, but the screen still does not detect the input, even if I power cycle the monitor after access the BIOS, so I won't try to change any settings, as I can't see what I am doing. The only reason I know I am in the Bios is that I can press f10 and then y to cause it to reset to default settings and cause a reboot. My system:ATi Radeon hd5870AMD Phenom II X4 3.4 GHzWD Velociraptor 300 Gb4 GbRamASUS M4A78-E

Apr 25, 2010

I was trying to install Debian 5.04 on a Mac G4, and in typical geek tradition, I didn't RTFM. During installation, I nuked all existing partitions, creating new to my liking. But as I learned later during the installation process, yaboot needed a NewWorld partition, so I can't boot the installation. I don't have any OSX CDs with me (this is a used G4 I purchased of craigslist) with which to create a HFS partition.I've re-run the Debian installer, which lets me create a partition that is supposed to be of type 'NewWorld', but the installer does not seem to like it or recognizes it.

Ubuntu Installation :: Recoverring From A Botched Kernel Upgrade?

Feb 26, 2010

I admit, my knowledge of LINUX isn't that great. That said, I thought I'd be able to pull off a basic upgrade (clean install of a whole new kernel, not patching the existing one) from the latest 2.6.31 in the ubuntu repo (I think it's 2.6.31-19.54 to be exact) to 2.6.33 (kernel --latest-stable) from source. I got all the config done, compiled it, and updated GRUB, rebooted to find that it had a "2.6.33.old" entry in the menu (not particularly relevant, I admit) even though I only ran the "make install" command once. Anyway, when I selected the non-old entry, it churned for a moment, gave a couple of weird screens for <1 sec each, and then gave me an error about a missing graphics module (I'll look for how to automate loading modules on my own, and see if I can port the existing NVIDIA module from my working kernel to the newer one) and gave me a list of options like "boot into graphics safe-mode" "boot to login shell", etc. and the mouse wouldn't work, so I had to use the keyboard to work the screen (i chose the shell login, since I didn't feel like seeing ubuntu's butchered face while it's in "graphics safe-mode"). I managed to get the computer to boot into the stock kernel, and am now wondering the following:

1). Do any of you guys out there think it's worth trying to save this kernel update?

2). How do I go about removing the "2.6.33.old" kernel & entry? (i've tried synaptec, the "make remove" and "make auto-remove" commands with no success.)
