I have to access my laptop and transfer files but the screen is broken. The only protocol that I know for certain that's on that machine is rdp. Since the screen is broken I can't test anything else.

Both are relatively new vanilla installations.I went into System - Preferences - Remote Desktop on the Fedora system and enabled Remote Desktop. When I connect with the Ubuntu system (ssh), I can login, but all I see is an ssh terminal session. I was expecting the desktop environment (GNOME right?) to come up.

This will enable me to have remote access via SSH command line.So far, I've installed Ubuntu 9.10 Server + Ubuntu Desktop to a virtual machine. I can access this via SSH and locally via the desktop. However, in the real environment the only access I am going to have initially is via SSH.
I would like to be able to connect using Windows Remote Desktop or VNC (whichever is easier and most importantly - most secure) to the machine.. even though the desktop is on there, I need to somehow configure the remote access all from the command line.I've had a read of various forums and have been trawling support forums for days but can't find a working solution for 9.10 Server or that fits my situation above where I will not have any physical access to the desktop or machine to configure remote desktop. It all has to be done via SSH/command line.
I have an AppleTV running a version of Ubuntu on a usb drive. I want to be able to use my iPhone as a wireless keyboard and mouse but the apps require that I turn on remote desktop in ubuntu.problem is, I use it for xbmc (crystalbuntu) and since the AppleTV only has 1 usb port, I cant plug a usb keyboard or mouse in as the flash drive with the OS on it is in the usb port.I can ssh into the AppleTV and run terminal commands. Is there a terminal command to turn on remote desktop so I can use the iphone keyboard app?

Or more correctly, I dont have a prompt to enter anything into. the last thing it shows on startup is:restarting OpenBSD Secure Shell server sshd.I can login remotely with no issue. Apache is working fine. MYSQL is working fine, Memcached is working fine. But no clue how to manage the server from the server itself.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI installed the latest version off the download site yesterday, when first booting an error message came up that my hardware does not support the most recent desktop environment so I should switch to classic. After a bit of googling I found out how to do this.
The problem is that my hardware really doesn't support the current desktop environmet, I can't get the windows to appear, I just get black rectangles in the middle of the screen instead, so the GUI is inaccessable.
I am looking for instructions on changing the desktop environment from a command line (which I can boot to).
Just got the new Dual Quad Server and after the installation was completed, It was the destkop edition... Can I get a reference on how to install the "Command Line Only" version of CentOS, OR Can I run the desktop edition and still be able to host VPS's and Web Servers, etc...

During logout to change Desktop Environment/Session, I noticed that GDM login screen had an option for KDE session although I had not installed KDE. I got curious. So I tried it. System hangs. Restart does not help because somehow gdm proceeds to the KDE session although I did not choose it to be default session. So I had only CLI left.
I got over it by stopping gdm (/etc/init.d/gdm stop) and removing gdm and installing xdm. Anyway, what is the proper way? How to order desktop environment from CLI and/or where is the default desktop environment option written in a file?
What's the best procedure to kill a desktop window from the command line? I'm having the problem on a FC 12-64 machine that using the File Browser window locks up most of the desktop. This might be software problem or it could be due to a defective mouse. I haven't had time to see if other windows cause the same problem. To do that, I'd like to kill the File Browser window.
The only windows that work are terminal windows. So I tried using the command line from a terminal to kill the file browser. When I do a kill -9 on the process involving nautilus, the process dies, the File browser window flickers off and back on, and then a new process involving nautilus appears in the list displayed by ps -ef. Is there a way to kill the File Browser window and make it stay dead?

I maintain plain vanilla Ubuntu 10.04 systems for several friends. Each machine has only one user, the owner. I use Remote Desktop to instruct and to perform maintenance. Here's my problem:After updating the system, if the kernel has changed, a restart is needed. If I do a restart, I then have to phone the owner to insert his login credentials in the gdm login screen, before I can do anything else via Remote Desktop on that machine.There ought to be a simple way I can avoid the phone call and login myself.
I'd strongly prefer not to use any software that is not included in a plain vanilla Ubuntu 10.04 installation. And I don't want to weaken system security beyond what it is now.Is there a solution? Or, what is the simplest solution?
I have had a notebook with an ethernet plugged in cable before, sent a signal through the cable by resetting my router, and it switched my notebook on from cold. My question is, is there a way of doing this using a remote desktop client. Ideally, I would like a machine switched off at home running suse linux/windows, then have a client computer sent the remote request, this in turn activates the machine, which boots and then gives the rmote client control.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm working on getting my myth box hooked up to my Sony flat panel display.Originally the nvidia drivers could not read the EID, so defaulted to only 640x480 over my HDMI-DVI connection.I manually updated xorg.conf with a mode for the resolution I know the thing can handle. Suddenly there are several resolutions avaialble in nvidia-settings and it seems to be communicating with the TV, as it is now listed as a Sony FP display rather than a CRT.I'm able to change the resolution now as expected.my problem, however, lies with the TV itself. I can't seem to get it to actually display the output. I'm able to remote desktop into the box and can see Gnome logged in and everything.However nothing on the TV itself.How do I troubleshoot this? Am I missing something obvious?

The machines are side by side The Ubuntu box is hardwired to my network router, and the XP machine is connected via wireless. Both get to the internet fine, and I can ping the Ubuntu box from the XP box. But, I cannot ping the XP box from the Ubuntu box, and Remote Desktop Viewer won't establish a connection to the VNC server I have running on the XP box.
