Ubuntu :: Change Desktop Environment From Command Line?
Jun 13, 2011I installed the latest version off the download site yesterday, when first booting an error message came up that my hardware does not support the most recent desktop environment so I should switch to classic. After a bit of googling I found out how to do this.
The problem is that my hardware really doesn't support the current desktop environmet, I can't get the windows to appear, I just get black rectangles in the middle of the screen instead, so the GUI is inaccessable.
I am looking for instructions on changing the desktop environment from a command line (which I can boot to).

May 12, 2010I had chosen automatic logon. Then updated to 10.04. During logout to change Desktop Environment/Session, I noticed that GDM login screen had an option for KDE session although I had not installed KDE. I got curious. So I tried it. System hangs. Restart does not help because somehow gdm proceeds to the KDE session although I did not choose it to be default session. So I had only CLI left.
I got over it by stopping gdm (/etc/init.d/gdm stop) and removing gdm and installing xdm. Anyway, what is the proper way? How to order desktop environment from CLI and/or where is the default desktop environment option written in a file?

I can accomplish this manually by right clicking the directory > select "Properties > click the directory icon button > select the "cover.jpg" image. I am just looking for the way to do this in the terminal to save time, as the music collection is quite large.

1) sudo apt-get install wmctrl
2) Create the following script and proceed as directed within the script's comments:

# Right click on the panel and select "Add To Panel".
# Choose "Custom Application Launcher".

Jul 1, 2011I downloaded the new eclipse indingo and extracted it to /home/user/opt/eclipse. I then made a link to the eclipse executable on my Desktop folder. It works well, if I click the link it opens eclipse. My problem is that it shows the rachet icon on the desktop. When I try to change the icon for only that link I end up changing all the icons for all executable to eclipse's icon.

My problem is that I cannot change the icon for Opera in the Kickoff menu or on the desktop. I tried right clicking on the Kickoff Application Launcher widget on the panel and choosing Menu Editor; Navigated to Opera and changed the icon from the default KDE icon (opera) to the new styled Opera icon (opera-browser), but it doesn't change.

Apr 8, 2011A couple of days ago I set up an account with ZumoDrive to sync folders between my Fedora 14 desktop and my MS Vista laptop. I chose ZumoDrive instead of Dropbox or Ubuntu1 because it is 'integrated' with Yahoo which I use a lot.Everything works perfectly apart from one minor irritation. I cannot change the ZumoDrive folder icon on my KDE4 desktop. ZumoDrive is actually designed for use with Nautilus but it works fine with Dolphin, apart from the icon issue.
I can change the icon in Nautilus but when I try to do in in KDE/Dolphin I get:"Could not save properties. You do not have sufficient access to write to /home/david/ZumoDrive/.directory."I am the 'owner' of the drive and i have also tried as root but the result was the same.

This has locked me into a situation where I can't boot up/log in properly. I can get to a command line and start the x environment as root.
