Ubuntu :: Transfer Windows ITunes Library ?
May 3, 2009
After recently converting my old pentium 4 pc into a linux machine because of being sick with viruses and malware I was very happy with how robust Ubuntu is. The only problem I had when converting it to Ubuntu was that Apple doesn't have iTunes for linux. In the meantime I had been using my netbook pc with windows xp for my itunes needs, podcasts etc. Because I have 2 iPod's I wasn't going to bother with the hassel of getting iPod's sync'd to Ubuntu as well.
So today I finally decided enough was enough and was going to figure out how to get iTunes working, I had been using Wine since I installed Ubuntu to run uTorrent because it enable schedule downloading.
So enough blabbering, here is a quick explanation of how to get your windows music library onto your Ubuntu machine.
NOTE: ITUNES STILL ISNT COMPLETELY STABLE, FREEZING MAY OCCUR EVERY NOW AND THEN DEPENDING ON YOUR MACHINE AND SOFTWARE UPDATES! PROCEED WITH CAUTION!
1) First off, you need to install Wine which you can find at winehq.org
2) You will need to make sure you know EXACTLY where all your songs are. I suggest putting them on an external hard drive to transfer them over to your windows machine.
3) On your windows machine go to File > Library > Export library. And you cant put that file onto your external harddrive as well.
4) So now you have a copy of your itunes library and you have installed Wine, you now need a windows version of iTunes which you can find at any old apps related site. So far iTunes 7.2 works with best for me with Ubuntu 8.10 you can get this from many sites that still host old apps. The latest version of iTunes does not work at all for me, but this doesnt really matter.
5) After installing iTunes you may get an error explaining how you cannot burn discs to itunes, click OK.
6) Now you are ready edit your itunes library xml. Right click on your itunes xml and click 'open with text editor'. Click 'REPLACE' at the top of the screen and type the file path for the song in the 'FIND' field. {For example if the song was 8 Mile by Eminem then in the itunes XML it will say something like C:/my documents/my music/eminem/8mile. You would now type in the FIND FIELD C:/my documents/my music/.} Now that you have typed in the file path for your old music library it's time to time type in the path of the location of your new music library. {For example if your new music is on a external harddrive it will be /media/western digitaldrive/} You now type in the REPLACE field the path of your new music. Then click REPLACE ALL. Then click save as and call it the date of the library in case the xml you typed is wrong you wont have to go and get another copy of your itunes library xml.
6) Now you saved your library, open iTunes and click File > Add file to library and add your itunes library xml by clicking Open.
7) Now go for a walk outside and have a cup of coffee while you wait, this can take some time. For all my 8,802 songs it took 15minutes to import.

I imported my itunes library from my ipod. I tried using Mplayer and Banshee to play the music but no luck. Is there a plugin I'm missing for mpeg4 decoding? I also tried using Soundconverter but it's also looking for a mpeg4 decoder.

I have found simple ways to transfer my downloaded music from Windows (file uploading and then downloading, the non-technical easy way), but iTunes doesn't really allow you to download your music - from what I know (non-technical person here).
I have wubi because this is a family computer, and my sister's a gamer (once I convince them to use this, I will find a way to make those games to work here). I also will start buying music from Amazon soon so it'll work here.
How do I first of all download the bought music from iTunes?

I've been building my digital music collection for some time and used to house it on a local drive with no quality issues. A while back I built myself a file server using ubuntu and mdadm in a raid1 configuration to protect against potential drive failure. I link my iTunes library to the music files via a samba share and everything works great on the surface. I've started to notice that random songs are becoming corrupted with pops clicks and silent pauses. I'll even re-download an album and notice that it's corrupted a few weeks later. Now I'm at a loss to what is causing this issue; I ignored it at first but it seems to be getting worse and more widespread as time goes on.
Do you think this could be caused by mdadm? It reports that all is fine via 'cat /process/mdstat' but I wouldn't know where to look or what to look for if there were syncing issues. The other possibility is that I have iTunes set to keep my music folder organized for me, but I've never heard of it actually corrupting the files it shuffles around. The bottom line is that my library is getting crappier as time goes on and I cannot stand for that!

As most do now my local library has a decent catalog of audiobooks, which I would like to be able to listen to on my iPod. These books can be downloaded only by using Overdrive Media Console (which is available only for Windows and Mac, and also requires Windows Media Player to work!) and iTunes if you want to transfer to an iPod.
I've searched around for Linux friendly solutions. They fall into two categories, try Wine/virtual machine/dual boot to run the required software, or give up. But pretty much everything I have found is about four years old now. Has anything changed in the last few years, or is this still pretty much the way things are? At the moment I use my girlfriend's Vista computer to download books, but I would like to be as Windows free as possible, and able to do it on my own computer.
Can anyone offer advice for being able to download audiobooks and put them on an iPod, with a minimum of non-Linux software? Relatedly, I would also be quite happy to replace the iPod firmware with Rockbox, but from what I can tell that would make library audiobooks even less accessible (so asking if this is an option is like asking for $10 after being refused $1).

I'm looking for the best iTunes alternative that has almost these features:
- being able to edit the track's name/album (songs in the iPod)
- adjusting volume of tracks
I'm currently using Rhythmbox. I have tried Exaile and Amarok just doesn't work for me. I can't recall what made me turn away from Banshee, too. I'm not really into Wine so installing iTunes itself is not viable.

I'm thinking about switching from Windows to Linux when I get a new laptop. As far as I can tell, the only software I use that doesn't run on Linux or have a Linux equivalent is iTunes. Here are the tasks that I currently use iTunes for:
Syncing my iPhone a few times a week (for podcasts, keeping smart playlists up-to-date etc); Downloading podcasts; Using Home Sharing to sync purchases to another machine on my home network. Would I still be able to perform these tasks using iTunes in a Windows VM?

Ok so I have been using Ubuntu for a few months, but considering how I am a total noob at doing alot of things on it i wanna get some background info about a few things before I start screwing with it.1) On deviantart i see alot of people will totally customized desktops using something called GTK2, questions: how to get and how to use? (a nice tutorial page might help lol i cant seem to find it on google)
2) I have a computer running vista and I have Ubuntu installed onto it using Wubi. I am keeping the Windows because I need it to run the latest version of iTunes (unless wine can run it but I havent tried yet because my media folder is larger than the 30 gigs i have for ubuntu). I also want to keep my windows folders and Ubuntu folders completely seperate, so my question: is there a way to increase the partition size of Wubi to past 30 gigs? I have tried to use wubi-add-virtual-disk, but when i used it it successfully repartitioned but than i rebooted and it said that root.disk was missing and my entire Ubuntu was gone (lame i know). I also did all the recent updates from the update manager, but that shouldnt cause that problem should it?
2) a) lol if possible i would like to entirely create a new partition on my computer and install Ubuntu from there (simplifies alot of things), but i cant seem to shrink my existing hard drive... the max i can shrink is it 1.4 gigs. Does anyone know how to increase that space? (I have a 300 gig hard drive with 230 gigs free i wanna create a new partition with 210 gigs for ubuntu leaving windows with only 20 gigs of free space). I have looked at using Gparted to redo the partitions, but it destroys windows and I dont have a Vista reboot CD and cant get one cause i live in china o.o

I just got a new iphone (yay me) but later realised that as I have Ubuntu, it is very difficult to get itunes installed on it.
Having said that, I've got Wine installed and attempted to download itunes 7.something and even though the whole process worked, it appears that when I try to access itunes the whole screen goes black and then if I scroll across the screen with my mouse it lights up various bits of what's behind the black screen and then after a while it tells me that it cannot access itunes at all...
So I thought, perhaps I should uninstall itunes, but in doing that it still appeared in my wine folder, so I uninstalled wine, which still appeared in my Applications list, so I edited my applications list and then tried to re-install wine from scratch (I know I sound dumb already - but I was desperate ok!!!). So now wine is installed on my computer somewhere but it now doesn't show up in my Applications list at all and I can't seem to get it back on there - any suggestions there would also help...
But my main objective is to try and uninstall itunes properly (maybe from the terminal window - but I don't know how to even do that) and attempt to re-install it to see if it works again.
I need to do this in order to sync my iphone. Cannot seem to do it with Amarok as I don't have Installer.Apps on my iphone, and cannot get THAT without syncing it with itunes to begin with....

I have been working on this for a long time.
I could get the static libcurl library ( a "libcurl.lib" file and a "curl.h" file), which supposed to be working under Windows.
Yet I tried Visual c++ 6.0 but it wasn't working at all.
Some idea on that ? I don't mind to try MinGW and Dev C++ if it will really work. (Cygwin is not good since it require client to have cygwin.dll in run-time folder).

I will be getting a new computer soon, and I would like to transfer Wubi partitions from one computer with Windows to another. (The reason I want to transfer the partitions instead of just making a new installation is because I want to keep EVERYTHING intact and all the files/settings/applications/etc the same.)

It seems the file libdb does exist. man dbopen displays man page for dbopen. I also tried to ln -s /usr/lib/libdb.a and libdb.so /lib dir but all were in vain.

At work we are trying to avoid paying for a cert for our outlook owa. I thought of Tiny CA, but can't find a windows variant, it appears to depend on things that would not allow that.
Does anyone know if it is possible to create a Tiny CA Cert and install it on a Windows Server 2003? If not does anyone know of a good free Cert creation utility for Winedoze.
I have a feeling this is going to be another feather in the basket to convince my boss to go Ubunutu.

My Windows XP Pro laptop has been attacked! Windows will no longer update and Microsoft Security Essentials will not update either. I've been trying to resolve the issue for over two weeks with Microsoft support, but it's just taking too long. I also tried some rescue CD options (all running some form of Linux, obviously):
- BitDefender Rescue CD (removed infections, now detects nothing),
- Kaspersky Rescue CD 10 (removed infections, now detects nothing),
- Trinity Rescue CD (won't load AV Engine, so can't use it to do anything).
Malwarebytes cleaned a bunch of stuff, but will not clean the final threat detected (it's supposed to get deleted on reboot, but never does). Hijack.FolderOptions is stuck in the accursed registry, and it keeps causing Windows Explorer to crash. I cannot rename files or work with them or everything just crashes.
So I'm ready to reinstall XP from scratch, and add a dual boot with Xubuntu & LXDE, which I'm already running on a much older laptop.
Question: I want to rescue the files I need. My idea was:
1) Install Xubuntu with dual boot.
2) Copy over files from Windows XP partition using Xubuntu.
3) Back up files to an external drive using Xubuntu.
4) Reinstall XP Pro and format hard drive.
5) Reinstall Xubuntu with dual boot.
6) Use Xubuntu for daily use.
7) Only use XP for those tasks that require it (TomTom updates ...)
Should I be concerned about the security risk from copying files from the Windows partition to the Xubuntu partition, and from there onto an external hard drive?
Is this the way to do it, or is there a better way? I just want my laptop back in working order. Right now I can't use it for anything.

I am currently running Windows Xp with service pack 3 and OpenSuse 11.0 (i586) on the same machine on separate hard drives. here are the specs on the machine. (Note: it is only a single core machine. I have no idea why both Suse and Windows say it is dual core as the processor was bought and installed months before dual cores went on the market.)
OS Information
OS: Linux 2.6.25.20-0.5-default i686
Current user: telknor@linux-l3e2
System: openSUSE 11.0 (i586)
KDE: 4.0.4 (KDE 4.0.4 >= 20080505) "release 15.4"
[Code]....
Now on to my problem. About a year ago I had to wipe my Windows drive and backed up about 32 GB of stuff from it to my OpenSuse drive. I did this from the Suse OS using Dolphin. In fact I can see, open, change, delete, modify layout, and move stuff around on the Windows drive all day long from Suse. I can as I said pull stuff over to the Suse drive from Windows drive while in Suse and save to Suse drive. Now I have need of the stuff that was moved but Windows does not see the Suse drive for what it is. Just says 'unknown partion type' gives size in GB and ignores it otherwise. From Suse if I try to move stuff back to the Windows drive it starts to transfer then stops and tells me it does not have permission to access the destination drive, folder, or location depending on how I tried to save it to the Windows drive. Adding new hard drives to the system does not help and the external 1 TB drive we have Suse can see it but will not do anything with it. The thumb drives on the other hand Suse does not have a problem with. It will open, read, and write to them all day long. Suse will not access the network to dump files to the network file server and it does not see any other systems on the network not even the ones running the same OS. I want to do the following:
1. Move the Windows files from the Suse drive to the Windows drive in same machine or to the network file server (also a windows machine)
2. Move all the Suse files to another machine running same Suse OS.
3. Wipe the Suse drive in this Machine so that Windows can use it.

It's a pity that Wi-Fi is used only for network and internet connection. There's no information on a thing that can seem so simple - file transfer via Wi-Fi.I can imagine it similarly to how Bluetooth does it (or Wi-Fi spot search which is already implemented), but no, it requires complicated LAN setup. What I want is an easy cross-platform solution to transfer files via Wi-Fi.

I want to connect a laptop running ubuntu 10.04 to a laptop running windows 7 via direct connection in order to transfer files like music, documents, pictures, etc. I have an ethernet cable that I thought I would need in order to do it. Is that even possible?? If so, how would I go about doing that?
Now, I have tried to share the files wirelessly but for some reason when I pick up the workgroup on the ubuntu laptop and enter the password in order to connect to the windows laptop it says my password is wrong, when I know for a fact that it is not. I know I can transfer files with a flash drive and what not but I want to try to get this working.

Last month I installed (not upgrade) squeeze in place of lenny on my dual boot laptop where the other OS is windows 7 Home basic (both C and D drives). I just noticed it today that while I can get any file from the windows to my squeeze I am not permitted to put any file to windows. As far as I remember I was not asked during squeeze installation whether the windows drives would be read-only drives. This difficulty was not faced when I had lenny. Can this problem be remedied now without going through a re-installation?
