I would like to transfer my music library and movie collection from my Desktop computer running Windows Vista and my laptop running Debian Squeeze. I have the laptop connected via wireless but it's possible to connect the two either directly with a CAT5e cable or through the router. I'm just wondering what the best way to do this would be.
View 8 RepliesI have Fedora 12 (with all the latest patches, including the 2.6.31.6-162 kernel) installed on a new Supermicro SYS-5015A-H 1U Server [Intel Atom 330 (1.6GHz) CPU, Intel 945GC NB, Intel ICH7R SB, 2x Realtek RTL8111C-GR Gigabit Ethernet, Onboard GMA950 video]. This all works great until I try to transfer a large file over the network, then the computer hard locks, forcing a power-off reset.

I'm pretty sure this is an issue with the r8169 driver (what I'm seeing is somewhat reminiscent of the bug reported here). The computer will operate fine for days as a (low volume) web server, and is reasonably stable transferring small files, but as when as I try to transfer a large file (say during a backup to a NAS or a NFS share), the computer will hard lock (no keyboard, mouse, etc.) at some point into the transfer of the file. It doesn't seem to matter how the file is transferred (sftp, rsync to NFS share, etc.).
how to transfer large files from my laptop to external hard drive. Problem occurs when I'm sending Blu-ray films (4.4GB) to external, gets to 4GB and then comes up with error. Is there any way of breaking it up and then merging when it reaches the hard drive or is there a way of sending it as one whole file.

The problem: copying a big file over the wireless to a gigabit hardwired to the router computer only gives an average 3.5MB/Second transfer rate. If I do the same copy from my wireless-n macbook pro to the same computer. I get a transfer rate of about 11MB/sec. Why the big difference? I noticed the HP always connects to the 2.4 GHZ band instead of the 5GHZ bands...

I am not getting any errors. I don't know why the bit rate is not known. My airport extreme base station typically reports that the 'rate' for the hp is typically 250~300MBi and about the same for the MacBook Pro. The hp is about 6 inchs away from the base station. Is there anyway to get the rascal to go mo'faster? Is there anyway to get the rascal to use the 5GHZ band.

View 2 Replies View RelatedLast month I installed (not upgrade) squeeze in place of lenny on my dual boot laptop where the other OS is windows 7 Home basic (both C and D drives). I just noticed it today that while I can get any file from the windows to my squeeze I am not permitted to put any file to windows. As far as I remember I was not asked during squeeze installation whether the windows drives would be read-only drives. This difficulty was not faced when I had lenny. Can this problem be remedied now without going through a re-installation?

I need a way to transfer the files en masse from the server with the large number of files to the one that is essentially blank.I don't have space on the used host to simply gzip all the files. I've googled this and see that there may be some combination of tar and/or gzip that will let me do this with some sort of redirection.
I really need and example line of how this can be accomplished. If my explanation seems rather sparse, I can supply more details.
I'm running kernel release 2.6.26-2-686 on a i686 and are trying to share files between my machine and some Windows 95/98 machines. When I enter smb://ip_number/share_name in Nautilus, it works. I can browse the files. When I try the same with smbclient or smbmount, it complains.
smbclient -I=ip_number -L=//server/share gives cli_rpc_pipe_open: cli_nt_create failed on pipe srvsvc to machine tf_calibration. Error was ERRSRV - ERRerror (Non-specific error code.)
I am facing problem in copying a large number of file 18 lakh (18,000,000) files from my personal hardisk to another hardisk each file is very small and size of folder is around 3.95 GB copying files using copy given by Windows is frustrating and I am not even able to compress file its giving me error that its not readable.And problem is I am not able to open this drive in Linux it showing me error there saying do diskchk in Windows and Windows disk check is also not able to repair this drive and goes into some mode unsolvable.Is there any way to open disk with error to open in Windows and if not any way I can copy data faster?ERROR: Disk labled EDU is corrupt go to windows and chkdsk /f there and reboot into window 2 times.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have 2 ASUS Boxes (one with 8GB, one with 4GB) When both mtus are set at 7200, using scp to copy a 56MB file takes 2:06. If I reduce either mtu to 1500, the speed is 2 seconds. I'm wondering if this is some kind of kernel bug or driver bug or what. For the moment, I've lowered the mtu to 1500 to get the performance out of the machines, but find it interesting that what should make it faster is actually slowing down. Where should I post this to get it looked at? Is anyone else seeing it.I see a similar performance issue with smbclient too.

After deleting the log files, I was able to regain access to my GDM session. But I still cant find out what /dev/dm-0 is, and where all the 75 GB is being taken up.
I just noticed, however, even though I can access the drive A-OK via browser, terminal, and web services (Our wowza) when I enter gParted I get this error for sda, my primary OS drive!

My Linux resides in sda3 (other partition is XP). How would I transfer the partition to a cf card? I tried using dd if=/dev/sda3 of=/dev/sdb1, but as that doesnt work I have the feeling there's more to do... Maybe install GRUB on the CF-Card? Change some paths after copying?

Is there a way to Transfer files between Linux based OS & Windows OS Without using SCP, FTP, TFTP, HTTP, USB, Netcat or samba share?
I'm trying to create an Ubuntu Server file server that will handle large file transfers (up to 50gb) from the LAN with Windows clients. We've been using a Windows server on our LAN on the file transfers will occasionally fail... though the server is used for other services as well.
The files will be up to 50gb. My thoughts are to create a VLAN (or separate physical switch) to ensure maximum bandwidth. Ubuntu server will be 64bit with 4tb of storage in a RAID 5 config.
My Windows XP Pro laptop has been attacked! Windows will no longer update and Microsoft Security Essentials will not update either. I've been trying to resolve the issue for over two weeks with Microsoft support, but it's just taking too long. I also tried some rescue CD options (all running some form of Linux, obviously):
- BitDefender Rescue CD (removed infections, now detects nothing),
- Kaspersky Rescue CD 10 (removed infections, now detects nothing),
- Trinity Rescue CD (won't load AV Engine, so can't use it to do anything).
Malwarebytes cleaned a bunch of stuff, but will not clean the final threat detected (it's supposed to get deleted on reboot, but never does). Hijack.FolderOptions is stuck in the accursed registry, and it keeps causing Windows Explorer to crash. I cannot rename files or work with them or everything just crashes.
So I'm ready to reinstall XP from scratch, and add a dual boot with Xubuntu & LXDE, which I'm already running on a much older laptop.
Question: I want to rescue the files I need. My idea was:
1) Install Xubuntu with dual boot.
2) Copy over files from Windows XP partition using Xubuntu.
3) Back up files to an external drive using Xubuntu.
4) Reinstall XP Pro and format hard drive.
5) Reinstall Xubuntu with dual boot.
6) Use Xubuntu for daily use.
7) Only use XP for those tasks that require it (TomTom updates ...)
Should I be concerned about the security risk from copying files from the Windows partition to the Xubuntu partition, and from there onto an external hard drive?
Is this the way to do it, or is there a better way? I just want my laptop back in working order. Right now I can't use it for anything.

Write speed under debian: 0.4 MB/s
Write speed under Windows: 6.6 MB/s
From what i've been reading on the net I guess it's something to do with the mount - sync option.
I've notice that there are couple of workarounds but all of them are pretty tedious.
Is there any simple (GUI - one/two clicks) tool that allow to mount/unmount flash disk easily using the correct options?

Now, I have tried to share the files wirelessly but for some reason when I pick up the workgroup on the ubuntu laptop and enter the password in order to connect to the windows laptop it says my password is wrong, when I know for a fact that it is not. I can trasnfer files of any size, with scp, from the desktop to the laptop; on the other hand, I can transfer small files (a 4,0K file, for example), but not files with some tens of megabytes, from the laptop to the desktop.
When I try to transfer a big file, the transmission starts at normal speed (around 2 mb/s), and then it slows down, and the message "stalled" appears where the remaining time was.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm having a strange problem with data transfers between systems. I have a file server + my desktop. Both are running Debian 8.3. I have a samba share running on the file server and I mount the shares on my desktop on boot via /etc/fstab
When I copy a file using the nautilus from my home folder (on my HDD) on my desktop to the mounted network location, my transfers start out at gigabit speeds 80MB/s-90MB/s for a couple seconds and then drop down to about 8MB/s
But when I terminate the transfer and then use scp to transfer the same file, I get consistent gigabit speed throughout the transfer. I am not sure what is going on.
When accessing an NFS mount for a large (200MB+) file transfer, the transfer starts rapidly, then becomes slower and slower until it hangs. On several occasions, it has frozen the client machine. Both client and server are set to default to nfs version 3. Slowdown and hang also occur when connecting to FreeBSD NFS mounts.
Presumably (I hope), there is some sort of configuration for the client that needs to be set. what should be changed in the configuration? This worked out of the box in OpenSUSE 11.0.
I have a new smartphone with Cyanogenmod 12 (based on Android 5) and a new ext SD card in the phone which has been formatted. I turned on "USB debugging" in Android and connected the phone to Debian KDE with a USB cable. The phone shows up and mounts, and I can browse the files in Dolphin and copy from the phone to the desktop, but I can't copy from desktop to phone or modify the contents, even on the ext SD card. In Dolphin I always get the same error message, "writing to camera is not supported", even though I mounted the device as MTP* (not PTP) and even though I'm trying to write to the ext SD card which is not even where the phone camera stores things.
I chose to mount as MTP within Android. I don't know if I also need choose an MTP option within KDE somehow, or how to do that.
I'm setting up a htpc system (Zotac IONITX-F based) based upon a minimal install of ubuntu 9.10, with no GUI other than xbmc. It's connected to my router (d-link dir-615) over a wifi connection configured for static IP (ath9k driver), with the following /etc/network/interfaces:

Network is fine, samba share to the media direction works, until I try to upload a large file to it from my desktop system. Then it downloads a couple of percents at a really nice speed, but then it stalls and the box becomes unpingable (Destination Host Unreachable), even after canceling the transfer, requiring a restart of the network.
Same thing when I scp the file from my desktop system to the htpc, same thing when I ssh into the htpc, and scp the file from there. Occasionally (rarely) the file does pass through, but most of the time the problem repeats itself. Transfer of small text files causes no problems, and the same goes for the fanart downloads done by xbmc. I tried the solution proposed in this thread, and set mtu to 800 in the interfaces file, but the problem persists.

Reading and writing works absolutely fine with small files but large files are tediously slow in writing to the server. (rw,no_subtree_check) are options in exported directories.
What is your experience with NFS and how can I speed up large file/folder transfer(write) speeds?
