I accidentally made my laptop go into "personal terminal" mode and it shut down and now when I boot into Ubuntu it checks my disks for errors and says the /TMP file is not ready or something..and when I open my terminal its just gray and when i hit the shutdown button it brings up a window where the inside is gray..
Why is the services tab grayed out in the ubuntu one client? Is this an error? should it be syncing files I have in the ubuntu one folder on my hard drive?
I have ubuntu 10.04 installed on the machine. I was trying to installed adobe coldfusion on my netbook , during the installation of the coldfusion the screen locked/grayed out . I have two hard drives, one is the file system, the other is for storage. On the file system drive, I can sync to Ubuntu One. On the storage drive, the option is grayed out when I right-click.
Edit: Finally found the right search voodoo to come up with this post. Unless something changed between Lucid and Maverick, it's only going to work within the home dir.

Problem with the Visual Effects under Appearance is grayed out. The options were available until after removing Compiz. Is there a way to restore back to the original setting of ubuntu 10.10 prior to installing Compiz?
I am new to linux world, recently installed ubuntu desktop 10.10 on old laptop (fujitsu-siemens amilo). When installed, I noticed that the 1. Enable wireless is grayed out 2. Wireless is disabled
Recently acquired a d-link dwl-g122 ver. C1 USB wireless, didn't want to fiddle with original. I am totally new to linux, this is my first installation. Tried the gksudo gedit /etc/network/interfaces added these lines: auto wlan1 iface wlan1... IT CHANGES to device not managed, tried /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf: [main] plugins=ifupdown, keyfile [ifupdown] managed=false Changing it to true the d link is again disabled?
3. When d link is plugged, ubuntu boots but stuck after login screen? On Vista, home network I use wpa2 psk protection, essid not broadcasting, hidden.
So Skype installed after an error with msttcorefonts (it seemed to resolve itself - not sure how), but now I am unable to create a Skype account. On the "Create a new Skype Account" screen I fill in all of my information and check the little box saying that I've read all of the licensing conditions, but the "Sign Up" button does not activate for me to click...it's just grayed out. My original installation error said that it was unable to install all dependencies, and that errors were encountered while processing msttcorefonts. Could these issues be related? How do I fix it?
my wireless just stopped working. the network manager in my panel no longer allows me to enable wireless. the option to enable wireless is there, but it is grayed out and will not let me connect. i reinstalled my wifi driver but it didnt change anything. iwconfig shows that the card is working why is the network manager not?
I'm trying to edit my wired connection but the edit and delete buttons are grayed out. How can I go about getting the available? I want to make sure my connection is checked for all available users. I was able to edit my wireless connection on my laptop fine, just not my desktop.
I'm not sure how it happened but recently when trying to print to a previously added printer, the printer does not show up. Most options are grayed out and clicking troubleshooter tells you that CUPS is not started. Latest guide I could find is for Ubuntu 9.04, options for restarting cups in 10.4 are slightly different (see below) To restart cups from terminal window in Ubuntu 10.4:sudo /etc/init.d/cups restartI looks like in Ubuntu 9.04 the command was /etc/init.d/cupsys restart. This should show the printer and open up the grayed out menu options, allowing you to print normally again.
I installed 10.04 on a machine up at work, and grabbed all of the updates. Whenever I when to import the PST file into Evolution, I ran into a problem. In the Import Assistant, the dropdown menu with all of the file types are grayed out, and whenever I select the .PST file to import, the Forward button is grayed out as well. Has anyone come across the problem before? I tried reinstalling Evolution, but that didn't have any effect on it. Still got the same problem.
Been having some problems renaming a mp3 player. When I connect it to my computer it shows us like in the image I have attached below. I have tried to rename the media by going into its properties (no luck) and then tried to use gparted, but while I can select it, all the options are greyed out.
I'm using Ubuntu desktop 10.10 on an Hp Pavilion dv2700 laptop. Most of the time I have had no issues, however on two separate occasions the wifi and bluetooth have been disabled, the switch on the front of the computer has no effect.the enable wireless function is grayed out, so I was not able to enable it. The first time it happened, (I didn't have an Ethernet cord at the time), I booted into windows Vista, thinking I could connect to the internet and find an answer. Low and behold I had the same problem in windows, however I was able to enable the wifi and blue tooth in windows. Now, rebooting into Ubuntu, the problem was resolved. The second time around the same thing happened, and I booted into Windows to fix the problem. I have done a search for known bugs on this issue, but none seem to relate to my exact problem. Is there a way to enable the wifi when it is grayed out? like in windows?Like I said this has only happened twice, but I had to boot into windows to fix the problem. I really want to delete windows all together, but if I have to keep it around awhile to fix this issue I guess I will.
Today I opened upgrade manager and found some updates grayed out. I could not click them so I went to synaptic to try and install them and got this error:

I just installed Ubuntu 8.1 on a Mac Pro using VMWare. It prompted me that updates are due so I selected to update. Now it's at the Update Manager showing 252 updates and all boxes such as close, check, and install updates, are all greyed out and the cursor is showing the circle that it's working on something. I had this happen a few days ago so I rebooted. This is the 2nd time trying this and I'm stuck at the same prompt.
I have even manually gone into the update manager and selected even to check for updates and it freezes up. I have tried to search for a specific file and the same thing happens. I have used previous versions of Ubuntu and never had this problem. I even went as far as doing a fresh install and had the same problem.
When I start PulseAudio Preferences (paprefs) in Fedora 12, all checkboxes for Network Access, Network Server and Multicast/RTP are grayed out. The feature I'm trying to enable is DLNA. Figuring maybe I'm missing some package needed to enable DLNA-support, I click the Install... button next to the checkboxes for this feature. Installation fails as I already have the rygel package installed, which provides the needed files. I have tried first uninstalling the rygel package and then reinstalling this from PulseAudio Preferences, but still no luck. what needs to be done to enable the grayed out checkboxes for DLNA-support in PulseAudio?
I have Ubuntu 10.04 and had no problems with wireless or wired. However, now it says Networking Disabled. When I click on it, everything is grayed out. My physical wireless button is on.
I just installed Ubuntu 10.04, everything is fine, but the wireless. When I try to connect to my WPA2 protected network, it is grayed out. SO I click Connect to Hidden Wireless Network, and this window pops up. I put in my network name, the security type, and password. It acts like it is connecting, the wireless icon is going up and down. But then another window pops up, saying Authentication required by wireless network and the down arrow is grayed out. very simple but i cannot find the working command anywhere.i want to give terminal windows name when i start an app from a script when i type in echo --help just send my back.
I am using Wine to play Sim City 2k, and the game doesn't show up in the taskbar. Conky shows that SimCity.exe and winserver are both running, but I can't get to them. How can I use the Terminal to swap windows?
EDIT: Oh, great. I think a fire just broke out. I can hear the sirens, but I can't stop them! Crap!
EDIT2: You know, listening to these sirens really sucks. I had my city up to 130,000 people. I was just saving up enough money to buy an arcology when I tried to move SimCity to Desktop #2. Wine was not happy with this decision. My city is probably burned to the ground by now.
EDIT3: Ok, I just realised that I can stop the process from the System Monitor. Too little, too late I imagine. Oh well, I can probably rebuild it if I could just get to the window...
I recently installed 10.10 Maverick on a lenovo S12, and I've been having problems with the wireless connection. First I installed the Broadcom B43 driver. This driver seems to work well except upon resume, I'm no longer connected, and wireless is disabled, and the 'enable wireless' is grayed out and I can't seem to find a way to enable it besides a restart.
I tried what is suggested in this post: [url]
Namely:
Code:
Put:
Code:
This doesn't seem to have any effect
I also tried the Broadcom STA driver. This was only better in that after resuming it tried to reconnect, but never managed to.
ive searched the forums and web for info on this but i am stumped.not unusual since i started to use linux.gparted crashes after about 3 seconds of grayed out screentime.here is my terminal readout after entering sudo gparted command.tenza@tenza-desktop:~$ sudo gparted
I was tweakng the desktop effects in kubuntu and adjusted the stiffness slidder to max out wabbly windows so I could compare it to more stiffer option. It is only supposed to wobble when the window is moved but as soon as I hit the apply button the window started wobbling all over the place! So fast, that I can barely tell what window it is! It is impossible for me to open any windows without them flickering all over the place. I will not be able to fix this inside KDE.
Does anyone know of a command-line option to turn desktop effects off? Is there a desktop configuration file somewere I can edit w/ nano? I am having to write this on windows7 because I can't use any windows in linux.
I'm using SecureCRT on a Windows host to connect to Ubuntu 10.04 using the default VT100 setting, and having a problem working with Ncurses (ie. output from "make menuconfig":[URL]...

I can start a Terminal window from the Unity launcher (Ubuntu 11.04). But how do I get a second instance of a program in the launcher, whether Netbeans, Terminal windows, whatever? This article on Unity [URL] says you should click the middle mouse button.
I have a terminal window running a game server in Ubuntu 11.04. no problems at all.I also have a backup script, which simply uses cp to save copies of the level files. this is run as a scheduled task every 20 minutes. What i'm trying to do, is as part of the backup script issue a command in the game server terminal window (forcing a save of the level) before the cp command takes place.
Two days of googling and i have failed to find a solution, anyone have any ideas?one thing i was also trying to figure out is how to identify the game server terminal window, maybe by changing the 'Terminal' text at the top. is this possible?
