Hardware :: Server - Buffered Disk Read Speed Just 3.98MB/s Very Slow ?

Jul 12, 2010

I am having a problem with my CentOS based server where the hard drive speeds are incredibly slow for both of the hard drives installed -

Code:

Timing cached reads: 16512 MB in 2.00 seconds = 8272.92 MB/sec

Timing buffered disk reads: 12 MB in 3.01 seconds = 3.98 MB/sec

I have looked around but do not understand the complexities of rebuilding kernel etc so would need some assistance. I have checked IO_support and it is set to 0

Code:

Here are the results for hardware installed after a quick lspci -v

Code:

If there are any noticeable incompatibilities here and how I could work to speed this up. I only have SSH access and could possibly get a KVM on it as it is currently locked up in a DataCenter.

Ubuntu :: Write Speed For Hard Disk And / Or Partitions

May 10, 2010

I have what seems to be a hard disk Write speed problems with my first hard drive. Timing the cp command of a 700 Meg file takes about 8 secs from disk 2 to 3 but takes 25 minutes from disk 2 to disk 1.

Here are the details:
Kubuntu 9.04 (Kernel 2.6.28-15-generic)
Hard Disk 1 : /dev/sda (WDC WD2500KS-00MJB0)
Partitioned
/dev/sda1 ext3 / 10 Gigs
/dev/sda2 extended 222 Gigs
/dev/sda5 linux-swap 2 Gigs
/dev/sda6 ext /home 220 Gigs

Hard Disk 2 : /dev/sdb (WDC WD2500AAKS-00F0A0)
Partitioned :
/dev/sdb1 ntfs 16 gigs
/dev/sdb2 xfs /home/eric/data_drive 216 Gigs
Hard Disk 2 : /dev/sdc (ST3500320AS)
Partitioned:
/dev/sdc1 xfs /home/eric/data_drive2 465 Gigs

By doing 'time cp ...sdb1/test.avi ...sdc1' takes about 8 seconds and same vice-versa. the command 'time cp ...sdb1/test.avi ...sdb1/test1.avi takes about 11 seconds and the same holds true if sdc1 is used But copy sdb1 or sdc1/test.avi to either sda1 or sda6 and it takes 25 minutes. Same problem if I copy from the same drive partition (sda). I have booted a livecd Knoppix 6.2 and the same problems happens.. So safe to say it's not Kubuntu. The only thing that is left to do is backup and reformat the partitions as XFS and try again. I also did a full smartcontrol Extended test and no errors. Checked all the various logs and nothing found.

I've recently updated my ubuntu lucid to maverick (32bit).However I noticed a strange issue at boot. My boot time is increased more than three times(tried to reprofile, but with no improvement) from 24s to 1.23min.After some bootcharting,I noticed that the disk utilization during maverick boot seems to be at 50% for most of the time and also the cpu seems to work at half speed for most of the time...My laptop is an asus m51sn, intel t8300, nvidia geforce 9500m gs, 3gb ram, 500Gb WD scorpio blue hdd.

Ubuntu :: Compiz Cube Rotation Slow In 10.04 With Firefox?

May 19, 2010

I have recently done a clean install of Lucid Lynx and set everything up the way I had it in Jaunty (skipped Karmic). However, I am now having problems with the Compiz Cube and Firefox 3.6.

Whenever I rotate my workspace that contains a Firefox window that is active, the animation is very jerky and slow. It is fine if Firefox is a background window. This was never a problem in Jaunty with Firefox 3.0.

Is anyone else having this problem? Does anyone know how I might be able to fix it? I have tried disabling all addons in Firefox.

My PC: Core 2 Duo E7400, Geforce 7010 (onboard), 2GB RAM

UPDATE: starting Firefox in Safe Mode seems to help a little. Not sure why though...

General :: Changing GRUB From An External Hard Disk To The Internal Hard Disk?

May 14, 2010

I had a dual boot (windows 7 + debian), both of them installed in my internal hard disk, with the GRUB in it. I have recently installed a second linux distro (mint), but I put it in an external hard disk. Now the GRUB allows me to boot any of the three operating systems, but I need the external disk to do it. It seems that after the mint installation the GRUB is now working from the external disk (if the external disk is not connected, the machine does not boot.) Is there a way to change the location of the GRUB, to the internal hard disk of my laptop?

Ubuntu :: USB Disk - Slow Transfer Speeds And Slow System?

Apr 17, 2011

Whenever I transfer a movie into my 16GB USB flash disk, my whole system becomes windows-like and unusable!

When i drag the file(s) into the USB disk folder, it starts out fine and pretty darn fast (25mb/sec) then slowly decreases until it's unbearably slow (3m/sec) and as a side effect my whole system starts deteriorating. I basically have to wait for the file to finish transferring before i can use my desktop again!

This has been happening with every version since Karmic (all 64bit)- I put up with it because I don't use the USB stick that much.. but lately it's been my go to source for transfering large files to/from work.

Ubuntu :: Slow Run From USB / Speed It Up?

May 20, 2010

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 from a USB key (16GB). Overall I'm pretty fine with it but there are a few problems I am having. It seems to be very slow. In particular, Firefox and Pidgin freeze every now and then, before becoming active again. The same thing also happens for other applications such as Rhythmbox, Gedit, and the terminal. Additionally my start up and shut down times are horrible (worse than when I use Vista and Ubuntu 8.04). I was wondering if there is something with my install or if this is all due to the fact that I am running from a USB. I don't think it's the USB since I ran 8.04 from a USB HDD (55GB) and didn't have any problems with speed.

im suspicious that my video card driver might not be configured correctly. can anyone tell me what I might need to configure to get things running smoother?

other things on the computer are also running slow, like opening Firefox, it takes a while for the window to appear.

Ubuntu One :: Very Slow Upload / Speed It Up?

Apr 25, 2010

I have been trying out Ubuntu One for the past couple of days but find it to be incredibly slow. At first i had put a folder will a large amount of images in the ubuntu one folder. The total size of it was 35Mb, after over 26 hours only 11,5Mb of that had been uploaded.

After looking around some on these forums i saw several comments about it being slow when it is a large amount of files, no matter if the filesize is small or large. I decided to try it out with a larger single file. I erased everything that was in the previous share and then put my testfile of 350Mb in the Ubuntu One folder.

After two hours of waiting i could still not see it on the U1 website so i decided to see how long it would take with dropbox and put a copy of that file in my dropbox folder as well. The file was uploaded correctly to dropbox in just a couple of minutes but it has still not been uploaded to the U1 website even though it has been 4-5 hours since i first put it in my U1 folder.

Ubuntu Networking :: Why Is Internet Speed Is So Slow?

Feb 10, 2010

When using launchpad and the ubuntu daily build website it is very slow. I get 1.2mb/s normally and the speed drops quickly to 0kb/s This is the case from any version of ubuntu that is installed on my laptop. In windows it is no problem, equally there is no problem from a live cd or an install on my external hard disk. Is canonical blacklisting/slow listing my ip?

I am behind a university network but am sure this problem occurs at home .I did a clean install and had no problem until about an hour ago. When I tried to re download a project using bzr my speed instantly ropped.I had downloaded it fine a couple of hours ago. I hope that someone can shine some light on this, its very hard to work on projects if I can't download them.

Normally in WIndows 7 I get download speeds up to 800 KB/s and a very fast Wifi experience, but in Ubuntu I get 100KB/s maximum and web page load speed is very extremely slow. I have a Netgear wg111v3 which worked out of box when I installed Ubuntu but always with this problem. It is updated and I've reinstalled Ubuntu many times..

Also I forgot to say that in Ubuntu the connection goes down very often and sometimes will not connect again until I reboot. Again in Windows never happened that.

Ubuntu :: Slow Network Speed When Writing To Server?

Jan 13, 2010

I have just formated and did a fresh install to start all over. I installed Ubuntu 9.1 and everything went fine but the network. The computer serve as a NAS and MediaPlayer. When getting a file from the server, I get a speed of 40-60mb/sec, which are good for a Gigabit network. When I try to put a file in, the speed can't pass more than 1mb/sec and often stop.

Here's the network info:

Code:

vric@XBMC:~$ ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:24:8c:a1:eb:55
inet addr:192.168.1.5 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
inet6 addr: fe80::224:8cff:fea1:eb55/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1

[code]...

Edit: Looks like it's a Gigabit Problem. I connected the Ubuntu box to my Linksys router which is 10/100 and everything is MUCH faster.

Ubuntu Networking :: 8.04 - Wireless Speed Slow / Drop

Jan 15, 2010

I've been using Ubuntu 8.04 for about a year and the wireless has been fine but now it's gone screwy and I can't figure out why. This has happened on my laptop and wife's who uses Ubuntu Hardy also. The speed drops to almost 0 mb/s whenever the signal strength is less than 95%.

It isn't the internet connection as vista (I dual boot) works fine below 95% signal strength. To get the internet speed to be at a level that can load an internet page, I have to within 3 feet of the router!! Both of the laptops don't use ndiswrapper, the internet connected straight away from a fresh install.
